IPC on multi-processor environment

I have written a C program which uses IPC resource "message queue" and "shared memory" on a single processor SUN Sparc workstation (with
Solaris 2.5.1 OS).
I would like to know whether my program can function correctly if it runs on a multi-processor SUN platform (e.g. Sun HPC model 450 with more than 1 CPU installed).
Does anyone have any experience on this?
Best Regards,
Annie

Hi.
The IPC features will work find in an MP environment. It is designed for processes which are normally protected from each other to be able to exchange data. You just have make sure that access to your message queue or especially shared memory is synchronised between multiple processes by using semaphores (see semget(2)).
You could also look at using just one process but multithreading it.
The multithreaded programming guide covers the issues.
Have you expereienced a particular problem?

    Will Java run better on multi-Processores environment? Are there any proof?
    Thank in advance

    Are there any proof?The proof is in the pudding, so to speak. The best thing to do is to benchmark your application on single and multi-processor machines.
    It should be noted that there are reports of threading problems with Java on multi-processor machines. I haven't seen the problems myself, nor do I remember the exact problems people were seeing (and on what OS/Hardware) but if you search these forums you should be able to find out the details.

  • Multi processor Solaris 2.6 and mutex locks

    hi,
    is anyone aware of any documented issues with Solaris 2.6 running
    on dual-SPARC processors (multi-processor environment) where the
    programs using "mutex locks" (multi-threaded applications), require
    some special handling, in terms of compiling and linking, to some
    special libraries.
    as far as i remember, in some OS book, maybe Peterson's, it was said
    that the mechanism for implementing mutex-locks on multi-processor
    systems is to use low-level spin-locks. this brings down performance
    on a single-processor system, making the processor doing busy-wait,
    but this happens to be the only way of mutex-locking in a multi-processor
    system. if this is so, then where is such behaviour documented in case
    of Solaris 2.6.
    i have had problems with my applications crashing (rathing hanging up)
    in a vfork() on such a system, but same application works fine, with
    100% reproducability, on a single-processor system.
    thanks for any inputs or suggestions and/or information.
    regards,
    banibrata dutta

    I am also facing similar problem. Application which written using Mulit-Threaded using Posix Mutexes. When i run on SINGLE processor manchine, i.e.
    SunOS sund4 5.7 Generic_106541-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10
    It works perfectly.
    But when try to run on dual processor machine, i.e.
    SunOS sund2 5.7 Generic_106541-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250
    It is blocking in the one of mutexes.

  • Multi Processor environments

    Just a quick question for ye, no detail really required at this time.
    Is it possible to run a multi threaded Java application in a multi processor environment, where the processors would share the work between them.
    I suppose basically what I am asking is does the JVM have the capabilities to run multiple threads across multiple processors.
    If the answer to this question is yes, how difficult is it to set up or is there any special requirements, or extensions required.
    Cheers

    In most current JVMs, the facilities of the OS to spread the execution across the system's CPU's is provided to the Java programmer quite transparently. Avoid 'green threads' and you are good as gold.
    On Solaris 7 and earlier, it gets tricky to convince the two-level kernel threading mechanism to really use all CPU's (or even more than one). The Sun JVM's for Solaris provide 'unsupported' but often suggested command line options to use 'bound threads' to solve this problem and Java 1.3.0 and 1.3.1 do a much better job. I've run WLS on 10-way 4500 systems and was able to consume about 70% of the 10 CPU's with productive work - principal limitation was our ability to apply load to the system.
    In Solaris 8, there is an alternate thread library that a process can choose to use (just put it in the front of the LD_LIBRARY_PATH). This causes that process to use a one-level (or flat) Solaris thread model which can improve performance (and will definitely increase processor utilization) on larger SMP systems.

  • Discoverer Reports does not work in Multi-org Environment after R12 Upgrade

    Discoverer Reports does not work in Multi-org Environment after R12 Upgrade. Created a simple report using the below query:
    SELECT po_header_id, segment1, type_lookup_code
    FROM po_headers
    WHERE segment1 = '5000002'
    Query works perfectly fine; when i set the ORG_CONTEXT in the database using the command:
    EXEC mo_global.set_policy_context('S',129)
    But the report doesn't fetch any data when ran from an Org based responsibility. We've ensured that the MO: Operting Unit is set accurately and general Oracle reports (PLSQL Program OR XML Publisher) are working perfectly fine.
    ===========
    I followed the steps provided in Metalink Note: 732826.1 - It works for some responsibilities where the MO: Security Profile is not set; but fails for those responsibilities where the MO: Security Profile is set.
    I am looking for specific solution that works irrespective of either the MO: Operating Unit profile is set of not.
    Please suggest. Appreciate your response.

    Hi Hussein,
    Thanks for the quick response.
    Yes, I've gone thru both the notes specified below:
    Discoverer Workbooks Based On Organization Enabled Views Are Not Populated [ID 1293438.1]
    - Tried this option; but this option is messing up a couple of Oracle Standard Functionalities.
    - For ex: If i set this profile option; we are not able to create any receipts using Custom Responsibilities.
    I am able to create the receipt, when i remove this profile option.
    No Data Shows for Reports in Discoverer 10g with Applications Release 12 [ID 1054380.1]
    - I see that the products i am running these reports from AR/GL - already exists in these tables.
    Anything other options??
    Thanks,

  • Multi-Processor Systems vs Single Processor systems

    In general, is it better to run Weblogic on a fast single processor system
    or on a multi-processor system where the individual cpus are less powerful?
    I am assuming that the platforms are WINTEL and all other things (memory,
    disk channels etc) are equal.
    What are the licensing implications of one philosophy over the other?

    your client load.
    I'd suggest that you run a load test against both systems and compare

    Hi. A JDBC connection pool is a set of identical, interchangeable, pre-made
    connections, and the controls to make sure only one user uses a particular
    connection at any one time. If you want to have different DBMS users, you can
    have a separate pool for each DBMS user, which may contain as many or few
    connections as you want. Some applications has a pool for the accounting
    applications, and another for the sales applications etc. Some do have a
    separate pool for john, jane, joe etc, each with one connection. Pools
    can be created and destroyed dynamically using the dynamic pool API.

  • BC4J - Multi-User Environment

    Can someone explain, how to setup a BC4J project in a multi-user environment. In my case I want to create 50-100 Users in the database (I don't prefer creating a table and storing usernames and passwords in that table as in Auctions example). Do I need to create a connection.properties with 50-100 user connections? How does the connection pooling work in such a case. I am sure that someone might have went through this process. I need some input.

  • Get the current active monitor handle in multi monitor environment

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to get the HMONITOR handle of the active monitor in multi monitor environment.
    i.e; Get the HMONITOR of the currently selected monitor
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Chris Lewis,
    Thanks for quick reply.
    I'm referring to the monitor, where a window is invoked
    I want to identify from which monitor, my window was invoked, so that I can create and  show the window in that monitor.
    I had already tried using MonitorFromWindow(). But it always give primary monitor handle.
    My Code:
    HMONITOR hMonitor = ::MonitorFromWindow(myMainFrame->GetSafeHwnd(), MONITOR_DEFAULTTONEAREST);
    hMonitor always refers to Primary monitor, though window is invoked from Secondary monitor.
    Thanks in advance

  • Workflow Custom Activity deploy in multi server environment

    I have been working on a project that involves developing a custom workflow activity for SharePoint 2013. I am developing it in a single server environment working with http.
    My problem occurs when deploying to multi-server environment with https (WFE, APP). My question is how to deploy my solution to the new environment.
    The steps:
    Create a project - c# activity library
    Add a workflow activity, add .xml
    Deploy the .dll and .xml of project to:
    "C:\Program Files\Workflow%20Manager\1.0\Workflow\Artifacts" "C:\Program Files\Workflow Manager\1.0\Workflow\WFWebRoot\bin"
    net sotp "Workflow Manager Backend"
    net start "Workflow Manager Backend"
    Deploy .DLL to GAC
        - Created MSI using install shield in VS2010 to add .DLL to GAC
        - Verify .DLL in GAC by going to c:\windows\assembly and %windir%\Microsoft.NET\assembly
    iisrest
    Deploy WSP to SharePoint, activate feature, open SharePoint Designer 2013 and choose the custom action that now appears when creating a 2013 workflow
    To recap we have workflow manager on the APP server and and the workflow client on the WFE. We deployed the .DLL and .XML to the workflow manager (APP) only. The .DLL is deployed
    to/in the GAC on the WFE and the APP. We are able to see and create the activity in Designer 2013 and we deploy the workflow to a normal SharePoint list. When we run the workflow we do not get any errors in the ULS logs, event viewer or Workflow Manager Debug
    Logs (event viewer also). The site is not created though. We believe the issue is that the custom C# (.DLL) is not being ran.
    This all works fine and dandy on my single server environment. Workflow is working like a charm. How can we trouble shoot what the issue is if we are not finding any errors?
    Is there a step that we missed or some other place we need to look for logs? Would the ULS logs show the site creation or show running our custom code? Currently it does not show anything when we run the workflow.
    Let me know if this is unclear or if anyone needs more information. Thanks

    Hi,
    Here is a workaround for your reference:
    We can develop a custom WCF service instead of the Custom Activity in SharePoint. And then use the service from workflow. It use a separate dedicated server for workflow without having any reference to SharePoint DLLs from inside workflow.
    Here is a similar thread for your reference:

  • Web Form Validation Message Language Setting at Runtime when work in multi lingual environment

    Business Catalyst use the default culture language to display web form validation message.
    When we are in multi lingual environment and not using subdoamin to handle multilingual sites, we found that the validation message did appear in the default culture setting. To make this work, we need to add the below script in our template.
    <script type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function(){
    var head= document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0];
    var script= document.createElement('script');
    script.src= '/BcJsLang/ValidationFunctions.aspx?lang=FR';
    script.charset = 'utf-8';
    script.type= 'text/javascript';
    head.appendChild(script);
    </script>
    Assuming the template is in french. You can change the lang parameter in the script according to your language.

    After user 1 submits the page, it might not even be committed, so there is no way to have the pending data from user1 seen by user2.
    However, we do have a new feature in ADF 11g TP4 that I plan to blog more about called Auto-Refresh view objects. This feature allows a view object instance in a shared application module to refresh its data when it receives the Oracle 11g database change notification that a row that would affect the results of the query has been changed.
    The minimum requirements in 11g TP4 to experiment with this feature which I just tested are the following:
    1. Must use Database 11g
    2. Database must have its COMPATIBLE parameter set to '11.0.0.0.0' at least
    3. Set the "AutoRefresh" property of the VO to true (on the Tuning panel)
    4. Add an instance of that VO to an application module (e.g. LOVModule)
    5. Configure that LOVModule as an application-level shared AM in the project properties
    6. Define an LOV based on a view accessor that references the shared AM's VO instance
    7. DBA must have performed a 'GRANT CHANGE NOTIFICATION TO YOURUSER'
    8. Build an ADF Form for the VO that defined the LOV above and run the web page
    9. In SQLPlus, go modify a row of the table on which the shared AM VO is based and commit
    When the Database delivers the change notification, the shared AM VO instance will requery itself.
    However that notification does not arrive all the way out to the web page, so you won't see the change until the next time you repaint the list.
    Perhaps there is some way to take it even farther with the active data feature PaKo mentions, but I'm not familiar enough with that myself to say whether it would work for you hear.

  • Multi-server Environment without Windows Domain

    Hi,
    Has anyone had experience with installing SAP BPC in a multi- server environment without using Microsoft Active Directory as a domain. (ie just using local users for everything).
    Do we need to create a domain in order in successfully install and use the BPC? If that is the case, which server is best suited to install the domain on?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
    Do you have at least a domain for hosting your servers ? Without an administrative domain for computer and technical accounts I doubt you could even make BPC work in a multi-servers environment.
    If you don't have a domain for your users, you may (but i will never recommend it), create all your users localy. But you will have to create them on all BPC servers with same name / same password. Password adminisration will be a real mess as you will have to change the password on all machine each time the user want to change it. And this will not be done by the end-user but by IT staff. Also, users will not be able to use Windows Integrated Authentication functionnality.
    So basically, yes use a domain for computer and users. The most easy architecture is to use a single domain for both computer and users.
    If you have to install a Windows AD, I would take a look at Microsoft white paper and KB. But I think that you have to dedicate at least 1 machine for it (best is to have 2 servers for fault tolerance).

  • Static methods in multi-thread environment.

    Sorry for this silly question, but I have no clue...
    If you're using classes with static methods in a application server environment, would that imply all threads use that same 'one in the jvm' method and would there be a possibility for performance loss?
    Is calling another static method from a static method a good idea in a multi-thread environment, with respect to performance? Somehow I seem to get this java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError. Any ideas? The classes are in the same package. I only get these kind of problems calling static methods from static methods in a multi-thread environmnent. The static methods are pure utility functions and of course do not use class state.
    Thanks for your help.

    Sorry for this question, wasn't thinking straight. I have the answer, won't post question on multiple forums.

  • Oracle on dual-/multi- processor server

    I have a question regarding Oracle on dual (or multi) processor servers. I have purchased 2 copies of the standard edition. I installed it on the server with 2 processors.
    My question is whether or not there is something different in the installation for multi processors.
    Another question would be if it is possible to install the database on a dual processor, if you only have a single copy of the license.

    The licenses are acquired by CPU or by users and you acquired the license for only 1 processor you must not install it on a server with 2 processors. Your enterprise can have legal problems if that situation occurs.
