Iphone 4 contacts disappeared - no iCloud backup, help???

I have an iPhone 4 with probably outdated operating software.
I was composing a text message when the applicaton closed abruptly. When I opened it back up, my contact names were missing, so all I have is numbers in my address book.
I do not have an icloud or back up that I know about.
Why hasn't someone sued Apple for a class action about this if its such an issue? Or please tell me how they can be recovered???

You should never have anything only on the iphone.
The iphone is designed to bo synced to your computer or cloud based system.
Not sure how you see this as Apples fault, if you simply fail to do the very basics.
The iphone is not a storage/backup device. Everything should be on your computer. The iphone simply allows it to be portable.

If you connect your iPhone to a computer running Linux (Ubuntu version in my case) it will become recognized as a normal USB memory pen-drive.
From there, you can use many methods to recover your lost deleted files.
TestDrive allows you to search the drive (iPhone memo) and gives you the possibility to recover deleted files. I'm not an expert, nor did it with iDevice by myself. But it worked for me with Symbian phone (Nokia)...

It is locked to your sisters carrier.
She would have to ask her carrier if they unlock iPhones and if she qualifies for this service.

if you have no back up in icloud or itunes the best you can do is sync with your computer and get back what you can from there

HT1766 I deleted an old email and lost many of my contacts info. I want to restore the contacts from my icloud backup --- how do I do that without resetting everything else?

Had to restore iPhone, now can't do iCloud backup

I had to do a full restore on my iPhone 6. Backed up on iTunes on computer first, an an iCloud backup.
Did restore, from iTunes, set back up etc. I normally use iCloud for backups, I have 20Gb plan.
Now I tried to initiate an iCloud backup it says not enough space.
Says my iCloud photo library is 13.5Gb, next iPhone backup is 5.8Gb, so not enough space.
Before restore it was backing up fine, so presume that after restore it's "ID" or something?
Anyone help I'm stuck....

Optimise iPhone storage is checked
Last iCloud backup states 1.8Gb.
I think my iPhone after the restore has changed ID/device no/hash ID or something. I've just opened my bank app and it's required me to "register my device for banking". This previously was registered so my bank app had identified it as a new device and I had to go through the registration process again..

I can't back up because there's not enough storage available.
If your iCloud storage reaches its maximum capacity, you can take any of these actions:
Upgrade your iCloud storage plan.
Create a smaller backup:
Select which apps to back up. Include only the apps that contain important data.
Delete unwanted photos and videos before backing up. You can also save the photos and videos to your computer before deleting them.
Turn off backup for Photo Library (or Camera Roll in iOS 7), especially if you already back up your photos to your computer. (My Photo Stream isn't a backup of your photos.)
Delete old messages from your device, especially messages with attachments. To delete a message, swipe over it, then tap Delete.
Delete items that you no longer need from iCloud. You can save them to your computer before deleting them. For example, you can:
Delete old backups, such as backups for devices you no longer have.
Delete app data or documents.
Delete old email messages, especially messages with attachments.

Yes. On your phone make sure it is set to send messages from your phone number, not your apple id or other email address. That way when they reply it will go to your phone.

Today I changed my Apple ID, and now am trying to do an iCloud backup and I AM connected to a wi-fi source as well as a power source and it WILL NOT back up, any suggestions as to why??

I'm having the same problem. Interesting part is that I also have an iPad. They sit side-by-side in docks for power, have the same settings to backup to iCloud. But the iPhone has never backed up to iCloud and the iPad does so regularly every night (same appleid on both). Both have plenty of extra storage. The only difference is that the iPhone only connects to the 2.4GHz wifi, while the iPad (new) will connect to either 2.4GHz or 5GHz wifi (my router supports both and both are turned on--the iPad seems to connect via the 5GHz side preferentially). Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi use the same Internet connection.
When I try to do a manual backup to iCloud, it sits there and appears to be trying, but last night (I started the manual backup before going to bed) it had gotten no further than barely starting (as indicated by the progress bar) by morning. So something is definitely wrong.

IPhone 5 contacts disappeared

Hi ive been an iphone user since 3GS. I have NEVER i mean NEVER had any technical issues with iPhone. But today i was completely taken aback.
at about 9.17Pm (india) i checked my phone and was shocked to see all the CONTACTS disappeared!! Not only did the contacts diasppear, the photos attached to all the contacts were also GONE! i tried:
1. Switching OFF and then ON
2. RESETTING the NETWORK SETTINGS
3. My iCloud settings had CONTACTS on OFF (dunno how that happened, ususally its ON). Followed some earlier troubleshoot to SWITCH OFF and ON the contacts sync to iCloud.
None of the above helped.
About half an hour before i discovered this CONTACTS vanishing thing, had charged my phone in the car's charging usb plug. I use a BELKIN charger. other than that, there was nothing that I had done wit the phone.
Im going RESTORE the backup that I have on my computer, howeer im an extensive user and travel all over. This kind of problem can completey ruin my day/travel/work. THIS MUST BE RESOLVED and i dont want to be doing this like other users that have and have shared their experience online.....
Hope Apple is listening!! THIS IS HUGE FLAW!! Otherwise im an APPLE LOVER...Look out guys!!

I just figured out a fix! I had the same problem......updated my iphone 3gs this morning with io5 update on iTunes; everything restored but my contacts; so went to itunes, to the tab where contacts are; there is a statement there that says something like 'contacts now synced over the air with iCloud'; but I clicked the dropdown box option for Windows contacts and then synched it, and it restored all my contacts! so was bypassing the icloud option

IPhone 4s Contacts Disappeared

Suddenly contacts disappeared, I had to Hard-reset my iPhone then restore contacts from icloud.

I had the same thing happen to me last night, all of my contacts randomly disappeared. Here's the breakdown of how it all started:
I happened to toggle thru my open apps. It was then that I noticed the image on the email app showing an unrecognized name (Mr. J Robertson) and it was showing as a contact in my email app; not as an email or what I normally see under my email. I thought this was odd, so I opened my email app; when I did this image was no longer visible. I tried searching for the name I saw, and found nothing pulled up. I then tried to delete some of my emails, and got a message stating that it is unable to delete the messages selected at this time. When I refreshed my emails, I received multiple new email sound alerts coming thru on duplicates of three and four times on emails I had already received. It wouldn't stop! I have 5 different email accounts on my email app, the only one acting wonky was my hotmail, so I deleted it, and re-added it back.
Upon doing so, no mail shows up under my hotmail email, and I noticed shortly after that my contacts had disappeared (all but my favorite contacts). Within minutes my favorites also disappeared, and within a few minutes after that I saw the names of my contacts replaced with the phone numbers on my txt message app. All of this happened within a 10 minute time frame.
I still have not been able to retrieve emails from my hotmail account, and my contacts are still gone. I am afraid to connect my phone to my computer to restore my contacts from my last back up on itunes or my verizon backup assistant; because it makes me wonder if I have a virus on my phone.

my wife and I both have iphones with only one apple account, I did the icloud back up on my phone and everything is fine, but when I did hers it shared all of our contacts, now I have two diiferent accounts set up for itunes, do I need to create another apple account for her phone and can we delete the contacts that were put on our phones without losing anything else? If you are sharing an iCloud account do not start deleting contacts on either device. Doing so will delete them from iCloud and the other device and they will be lost. To prevent merged data like this you need to have different iCloud accounts on each device. You can continue to use the same ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores; it does not need to be the same as your iCloud ID. To fix this, first decide which phone will be getting the new iCloud account. Then on that phone, go to Settings>iCloud and turn all data that is syncing with iCloud (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off. When prompted choose to keep the data on the iPhone. After everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud. The other phone will not be effected by this.) Next, set up a new iCloud account on this phone using a different Apple ID and turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On. When prompted, choose Merge. This will upload the data to this new account. At this point you will have two different iCloud accounts, one for each phone, with identical data on them.
You will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the other person's data from your account (such as deleting your wife's contacts from your iCloud account, and vice versa). These changes will be reflected on each phone. When finished you will have individual iCloud accounts with just your own data on them.

My ipad has seemed to have locked me out. My screen says "icloud backup" then it tells me that my ipad hasn't been backed up in 12 weeks. It gives me instructions to back it up, but they don't seem to work, can anyone help me?

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Iphone 6 been restoring from icloud backup for 9 days and still not finished?

I got my iPhone 6 on the 19th when it came out. It's an ATT 128 gb model. I started restoring from icloud backup on that Friday (9 days ago). It still is saying it's restoring from backup. Daily it's asking me to delete the data or keep downloading. This phone is for my business, so the info is very important. I am also worried that all the things in the last week have yet to be backed up since then, because I can't back it up till the restore is complete. I also can't do the new software update 8.0.2. I am on a fast WIFI nearly 18+ hours a day and I can surf the net just fine, but why is my restore from 9 days ago still not finished?

This needs to get improved. I had the exact same issue migrating my 5 and wife's 5S previously. It's never worked well. We need status bars, and indications of what has been copied, what remains to be copied, and ways to resume it and pause it without hoping it works and getting messages in the morning asking if you want to resume it, making you wonder if anything actually occurred overnight. The message doesn't pop up within 10 minutes of connecting to power and wi-fi so I have no idea how long it actually takes to come up.
It's unacceptable to think any device owner wants to roll the dice and hope they have all their data. We use these devices for our jobs and that data is critical for some of us. It's not all just pictures of the dog! Even though those are critical, too!! It would be different if this wasn't a known issue and the resolution wasn't so easy...get this fixed!!!

ICloud backup help needed!!

I'm looking to upgrade from my 4S to the 5S. I was told at the apple store to do a backup to icloud before purchasing the new phone. I am having such troubles! It said I didn't have enough space on icloud so I deleted all my pictures & videos assuming that would solve the issue. NOPE! So then I purchased additional iCloud space. Now it just tells me "backing up....estimating time remaining" forever. It never updates & the blue status bar is not changing/increasing. I am so frustrated right now. Any advice?? Thanks so much!!

You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
If you have the opportunity to backup to iTunes, that is what I would do, for a start you would not have had to delete anything from your phone before you started. However if you insist on doing an iCloud backup, then hopefully the suggestions above will help.
