IPhone 4 with iOS5, when I end a call and after sending a text, the data transmission "wheel" at the top next to the 3G icon turns for a few seconds.

This has only started since the IOS5 upgrade. Also, possibly unrelated, there has been a spam email sent from one of my yahoo email accounts to not only everyone in my contact list, but to anyone I have emailed from my iPhone (including those that I did not store email addy's in the contact list).

Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Mavericks has changed some minor characteristics in how the battery indicator reports, youre right about same.
None of that however is related to the actual charging or discharging of the Macbooks lithium battery.

I had this same thing happen to me. I was using my brand new iphone 5 (texting and listening to music through the speakers) when it flashed the apple logo, stopped my music and brought me to the lock screen.

Try to backup and restore you device in itunes...restoring the device is like removing the iOS software off the device and re-add in a newer software, after you have restore you device, MAKE SURE YOU SET UP YOUR DEVICE LIKE A NEW DEVICE, DONT NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP!!... give the device a chance to use the newer software and see if the issue still persisting, if the issue still on going then its would be a hardware issue.
Call Apple Care and see if your device is still under warranty to get it replace

Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Try resetting all network settings, or turn the airplane mode on then off, or restarting the device itself
if all else fails, do a restore (Back-up everything before doing this)
if it still fails, contact apple or your wireless carrier.

Ive tried to update and sync my ipod touch and its froze, itunes wont recognise it and when it turns for a few seconds on my apps have all gone?

i cant get my ipod to turn on - i tried to update it and it froze with an apple and loading bar on the screen. it finally asked me to plug it in to itunes which i have but then it wont recognise it and when it does it tries to restore it. itunes says it has been restored and needs to be synced but then it disappears and cant be found by itunes again. the ipod itself turns on for a few seconds but all of my apps have gone?! then all goes black and i have to start all over again. please help xxx

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Whenever i try to play a video on my iphone, it pauses literally every 2 seconds. i will hit the play button, the video will play for a few seconds and then it will pause again. what can i do to fix this?

I can understand this with videos you are streaming, i.e. maybe you have a slow data connection.
Videos on your phone should not do this. Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

Downloaded new format yesterday and now when playing music the sound is low for first few seconds of each subsequent track. Is this a bug?

I'm having the same issue on my iPad (the "new iPad" / 3rd gen with retina display and 30 pin dock connector) after downloading iOS 7 (is that what you meant by the new format, updating to iOS 7?).
The music will play quietly for a few seconds then it will play at the volume it's supposed to.

IPhone 4S keeps freezing when making/ending a call...

Ever since I udated my iPhone 4S to IOS 6.0.1, sometimes when I start to make a call, the screen says "CALLING..." for a long period of time. When I hit END CALL, it just freezes up and continues to say "CALLING...". The same thing happens when trying to end a call. I press END and the screen says "CALL ENDING...". The call will actually end, but the screen still says "CALL ENDING..." and I am unable to make another call. The only cure I've found for both these problems is to restart my phone. It's getting more frequent and I'm getting extremely frustrated with the whole thing! Anyone have a suggestion or a fix? Thanks in advance...

Try resetting your settings. Settings > General > Reset.

Quit the videos app completely.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Try the videos app again.
If that doesn't work, reboot the iPad. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If that fails, try this. Swipe to the right from your first home screen to get to the iPad Spotlight search. Type in the name of rhe movie in the field at the top. When the movie appears in the search - tap on it and it should start to play. Let it play for a minute or so - hit done - go back to videos app and see if all is OK.
But remember, once you start to play the rental, the timer starts.

For the list of teachers there are email addresses in the right hand column, did you click on an email address?
If you did that could explain the multiple tabs being opened. What may have happened is you have the mailto protocol set to open Firefox which results in 100s of tabs opening when you click on an email address. For details on fixing that see [[Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows]], in particular the section on "Change the action for a content type". My guess is you will find mailto is set to "Use Firefox".
