  • Can I use old iPhone 4S in Europe for WiFi, w/o cellular service? A few Qs not found in Support Community-

I wish to upgrade to iPhone 6, but first want to know if I can use my iPhone 4S for camera, iMessaging and apps (i.e. What’s App) on Wifi after it is disconnected from U.S. Verizon network?
iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2 (reluctant to upgrade to 8.1.2), Verizon, U.S. only
Mac Mini, OSX 10.9.5 (reluctant to upgrade to OSX Yosemite)
I’ve read all of the old posts (2011 thru July 2014), but still have questions.  This is what I understand:
Upgrade iOS and apps with iTunes, before transferring to new iPhone 6
Change the name of my old iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201997 (if I wish to name my new iPhone what my old one was called)
Enable airplane mode, then re-enable just wifi
    Activate new iPhone
Transfer data to new iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2109
    QUESTIONS:
Q: When connected to WiFi in England, Italy and Sicily - do I keep it in Airplane Mode even though it has been disconnected from Verizon and I will have an active iPhone 6 on my Verizon account being used by my husband at home in the U.S.?
Q: Will there be a problem sync’ing to iTunes in the future, or my Mac Mini?  Will it conflict with my new iPhone 6?  Or is it just considered a different device, once it has a new name.
Q: How can I message my husband in the U.S. with the iPhone 6 from Europe using my old iPhone 4S on Wifi only?  Do I use my iCloud account, like I do from my Mac Mini to my iPhone?  Or can I set up a new iMessage account on the old iPhone 4S
I appreciate any insights and answers.  Thanks in advance!
    Daphne

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • Can I use my Us iPhone 5s in Europe with a prepaid sim card while on vacation?

Can I use my Us iPhone 5s in Europe with a prepaid sim card while on vacation?

Only if the device is unlocked. Not all US devices are unlocked, as you probably know.

  • Can i use iphone 4 in europe

I am wondering if people have found it more cost effective to use the iphone 4 in europe (am going to denmark) or to try to buy some cheap other kind of used phone and put a sim card i buy over there in it. I am new to using forums, so if this q has already been answered, could somone provide the link to that thread or discussion, even if it is on another website? Thanks!

If your phone is carrier locked, to use in Europe...as a phone & for data...would be extremely expensive. You'd have to get International Provisioning activated for your account, then pick a plan & pay through the nose. What many folks do is put their phones in Airplane mode, turn WiFi on & use available WiFi for their phone's data needs(although there are not nearly as many free WiFi spots in Europe as there are say in the US). If you want to make calls, you can either purchase a local phone with a pre-paid sim(they are cheap & readily available) or you could still get International Provisioning activated for your account, but turn cellular data off in settings on your phone. That way you could make/receive calls & SMS's but not incur hefty data charges.

You need to use the credentials for the iCloud account that was used to turn on the Find my iPhone service.
If you can't remember yours, you can recover it here: https://iforgot.apple.com/appleid
If you've been walking around for 2 years with someone else's account set up for Find my iphone, then you'll have to get hold of that individual. If you can't, there is no way to bypass activation lock.

  • US IPhone use in Europe

Can i use a IPhone 4s in Europe wich i buy in the USA?

    Yes
but only if you ensure you purchase from an Apple Retail store and the iPhone is unlocked and sim free
Do NOT  buy a contract free iPhone that will be carrier locked
Must be GSM model NOT CDMA and the warranty is unlikely to be supported in Europe since
the iPhone does not have a worlwide warranty

  • If I buy iPhone 6 without contract in Canada, will iPhone work in Europe, on Croatian network without unlocking or some other problems? Tnx

If I buy iPhone 6 without contract in Canada, will iPhone work in Europe, on Croatian network without unlocking or some other problems? Tnx

A contract-free phone is not the same thing as an unlocked phone.
If you purchase it through a carrier, it will very likely be locked to that carrier.
In the US, Apple stores, and only Apple stores, sell unlocked phones. The same may hold true in Canada.
Also keep in mind that warranty service will only be available in the country where you purchased the phone (Canada) and you will have to either send it to a friend/family member to get it repaired or make the trip yourself. Apple will not accept a shipment from outside the country of purchase.
Finally, while an iPhone from one country will generally work anywhere in the world, you may find that you do not get 4G speeds/full compatibility with a network outside of the country of purchase.

  • IMessage on my iPhone 4S, austria ?

i am not able to activate iMessage on my iPhone 4S, austria ?

Note: On iPhone, if iMessage is unavailable, the message may be sent as SMS or MMS, depending on content. Carrier messaging rates may apply. You can turn this on or off in iPhone at Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Messages sent using iMessage will appear in a light blue bubble, while messages sent using SMS or MMS will appear in a green bubble. imessage is working like it's suppose too, when it's unvailable it sends it as a text.  if your having problem with your network connection I suggest contacting AT&T.

  • HT4528 Does any model of the Verizon iPhone work in Europe?

Does any model of the Verizon iPhone work in Europe?

My experience with their custome service has generally been good and the answers generally accurate. I know that they did change the requirement that phone roam on CDMA, if available. Apple added a switch to turn that off in 5.1. I don't know if that counts as "changing their story" or simply deciding it made for fewer unhappy customers.
The nice man in Global Support gave me a couple of disclaimers (only one unlock per number per year and Verizon would not be responsible for any customer/technical support while I was using a different SIM). The whole process was quick and painless.

  • Hi! I've bought a iPhone 4S from Europe

    Fake.

  • IPhone -- Trip to Europe – 17 Days, 6 countries and 11 cities usage report

Before I left U.S., I was debating about bring my iPhone with me on this trip. What if I lose it? What if someone steals it since Europe country won’t have iPhone until November 9? Finally, I decided to bring my iPhone with me and begin with this incredible journey. I did a lot of homework before the trip. I heard people been charged unbelievable rate by using iPhone oversea. Thanks Apple released new firmware (Version 1.1.1) that allow user to disable Data Roaming function. It does give us more flexibility to use iPhone while oversea. I would like to break down my wonderful experience by each icon on iPhone and also report EDGE avaliabiliy on each city. You are going to be amazed that how this phone makes my trip more fun and pride.
The countries I visited are Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, and France. The 11 cities are Amsterdam, Brussels, Köln, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Praha, Vienna, Salzburg and Paris. I added two services from AT&T before I leave. One is International Traveler Save plan. It cost $5.99 per month and no contract required. It gives discount rate when you dialing or receiving phone call while you are aboard. Another service is iPhone International Data plan. It costs $24.99 per month and no contract, too. It comes with first 20MB free and after 20MB will be charge discount rate. The total is about $30 and you can use your iPhone like you are in states.
iPhone works perfectly with those country’s local wireless carrier. It automatically switched the carrier when I am in different carrier zone. During this 17 days trip, I had no problem with dialing and receiving phone call. The dropped call rate is ZERO. If you are calling to U.S. make sure you turn the International Assist on. When you are using EDGE, most of cities offered EDGE service, make sure you restart you phone when you switch to different carrier.
SMS - SMS is the cheapest way to keep connects with your family and friends while you are oversea. It costs $0.50 to receive and send international message.
Calendar - I inputted my entire train schedule in calendar and setup an alarm for each schedule. It works well. I didn’t miss any train luckily.
Photos&Camera - If you don’t carry laptop with you on the trip then iPhone will be the best device for you to take picture and send it thru email. This is the best function that you can share your happy moment with someone instantly. You don’t have to wait until sync your camera with your computer. You take picture and send it right the way. While I was in Paris, I took picture with Eiffel Tower and sent it to all my friends.
YouTube - I don’t use this function that much while I am in U.S. This trip makes me realize that when you are visiting a non-English country and stay in the hotel only have 2 English channels (CNN and BBC). Youtube is the only entertainment. Most hotels provide free WiFi internet. You can access unlimited time and watch video on youtube. Special thanks for people who post my favorite U.S. TV show on time.
Stocks - I am sure each iPhone user who have stocks are already added their stocks code on this function. I don’t have to re-enter anything. Just click and iPhone updated lasted stock information for you. So much better than PDA.
Maps - Do I have to mention this great tool again? I used Google maps all the time, how can I not using it when I am oversea. Each city’s information booth is useless for me when I have iPhone. I can just point out the city where I am at and start search for point of interest.
** Do you know when you hold the iPhone keyboard longer, it appear with other character options. E.g. ö, ü.
Weather - Instead of input city’s zip code, iPhone weather allows you enter city’s name and add to system right the way. Every time when you click this icon, it will automatically update most current weather and 5 days forecast for you. It’s very helpful information while you are traveling many different countries.
Clock - Clock gives your all cities’ current time around the world. The other great function is you can set an alarm by each city. For example, I had 3 time zones, Los Angeles, Taipei and Paris. I set an alarm on Los Angeles time 2:30pm. It will sounds even Paris local time is 8:30 in the morning.
Calculator - It’s a simple calculator. Good enough for you to convert exchange rate and doing simple calculation. I wish Apple can add a convector function which allow user to convert exchange rate and any other units.
Note - You don’t need a pen and a paper with you all the time anymore. You can input anything you need on Note. It’s quick and easy. I like the font the use in this function.
There are several icons which we use everyday already, so I don’t have to mention it again. This is a great phone ever. Every time when I pulled out my iPhone and use in each city’s train station, restaurant, etc. People who see my iPhone, they always ask me how is it. Sometime I don’t understand the language, but I can heard “iPhone” between the sentences.
Please feel free to drop a message if you have any other question regarding using iPhone oversea.
    Sean

Thanks for the reply. I got my bill couple days ago. I didn't know you guys will be interested on my bill
I RESET my usage before I got on airplane, I also wanted to prove if iPhone recorded all mins and kbs accurate. The result did show the iPhone did recorded very accurate.
    Here is my bill detail:
    $59.99 Monthly Charge.
$17.94 iPhone International Data Plan (AT&T per rate within your billing circle)
$ 2.97 International Traveler Saving Plan
$15.50 For 31 SMS (send and receive)
$59.40 dialing and receiving phone call (most of Europe discount rate is $0.99 per mins. iPhone usage showed 60 mins which is correct mins)
I am happy with what they charged me because at least I know the price is correct.
Since I used hotel free wireless, I didn't over use EDGE, so I didn't got any charge by data usage.
*TIPS - Bookmark the direction you search on Google Map. When you bookmark the maps even you don't have any internet service, you can still see the maps.
** DO NOT cancel your International Traveler Saving Plan and iPhone International Data Plan until they billed you. If you cancel before that billed you, you will be charge the normal rate.
I heard that you need to be at least 3 - 6 monthes AT&T customer to subscribe international plan, since I am AT&T customer more t han 2 years. It only tooks me 5 mins to subscribe both plans. (AT&T had to read you a long terms and conditions which you can't stop them). It tooks me 2 mins to cancel both plans.
Call AT&T before 2-3 days you leave U.S. Since they are going to per rate the plan. Also, they don't accept pre-subscribe. The day you call is the day they start charge you. You need to tell AT&T representative that you are going to subscribe International Plan because they have to transfer you to the international department. Regular customer service can't do it for you.
    Any more questions?

  • Can I get a replacement for my iPhone 5s in Europe which I have bought in Middle East?

    Hi there,
I bought my iPhone 5s two months ago, when I was in Iran for vacation. Now, it is dead and I can not turn it on!!! Some of my friends tell me that some of these iPhone 5s are factory defect and that is why Apple asked everyone who has bought iPhone 5s and have problem with it, to send it back and get a new one.
I called Apple Customer Service in Europe and told them the story, but I got the answer: You have to contact Apple or one of their agents in Iran for repair. My problem is that Apple has no office or agency in Iran, because the country is under the US sanction.
So my question is: Is there anyone in the community who knows with 100% certainty that Apple in Europe is bound/committed to exchange the defect one with a new one or at least repair it for me?
P.S. I have checked the Apple Support for my Service and Support Coverage by providing the serial number. It is active (Estimated Expiration Date: 15 January 2015) and my product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under Apple's Limited Warranty.
I appreciate if someone give me an qualified answer.
    With regards
    Kioumars

The warranty for iPhone is not international. It is only valid for the country of purchase.
So what you were told is accurate. It must be brought back to Iran.
    Allan
The issue here is Apple does not have any presence (Apple direct or AASP) in Iran.
The iPhone, if purchased in Iran, was grey market or used and will not be serviced under any Apple warranty in Iran.

  • How much should/can I use my iphone 5 in Europe?

I'm vacationing in Europe next month and will be visiting London, Paris and Rome. I've heard all the stories about people coming home to outragous phone bills. I've also heard some suggestions on how to reduce the possibility of this happening. I'm assuming that all of this still applies to the iPhone 5. I'm under the impression that this phone is considered a "world phone", but I realize that roaming is roaming.
I understand that while I'm out exploring the streets of Europe, I shouldn't be scrolling my Facebook or Instagram feeds or updating apps. I know I should only be doing these things while on wifi. I also plan on bringing my Macbook so I can check emails and upload photos, etc.., again, only while back at the hotel on wifi.
I'm just wondering what if I happen to be out and about and need to use Maps for directions? What if I need to call the hotel for something, or call a business for general information? Can I check yelp to see if a restaurant is any good, or will that cost me more than the meal itself? How about sending and iMessage to check in with a family member back home. If I get seperated from someone I'm traveling with, is it going to cost me an arm and a leg to call them to find out where they are? Will my phone even work?
I know that Verizon has an international calling plan, but I'm not sure if this is for a short term vacationer like myself, or for those that travel frequently.
    Any advice will be appreciated!
    Thanks
(Verizon is my carrier by the way)

Thanks for asking about your device options while roaming through Switzerland, ellenajnos! The good news is yes, your iPhone 5c will work in that country. The better news is you can also add features to your account to enhance your experience and help you control the costs! Have a look at this great tool to plan your trip: http://vz.to/1k7RFqd

  • If I buy an unlocked, contract free Iphone 5 in Europe, will I be able to use it with a US carrier?

The topic says all really, Iphone 4s and 5 both have GSM and CDMA capabilities and it's supposed to be a world phone and blah blah, but, if i buy one unlocked 4s or 5 from Europe ( contract free) will I be able to use it with say ATT?
    I'm confused about this though:
    About the Unlocked iPhone
The unlocked iPhone includes all the features of iPhone but without a contract commitment. You can activate and use it on the supported GSM wireless network of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States. The unlocked iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S will not work with CDMA-based carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint." ( Link http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone/iphone4s)

AT&T and europe all use GSM . There is no CDMA in Europe
A genuine unlocked iPhone 4/4S  from Europe will work fine
A similar unlocked iP5 will work on 3G but NOT on  4G as the
European  iP5 does not have the 4G bands suitable for use in US
and the warranty will not be valid in the US it is not international

  • US iPhone, upgraded in Europe, now a brick?  Warning to others!

I'm in Switzerland for the summer, foolishly upgraded my iPhone via iTunes and now have a dead phone.
It started to throw an error message about not supporting the accessory I had plugged in (even though nothing was plugged in), then it wouldn't charge no matter the method (wall, car, laptop), and before I could back up and downgrade the software, the battery was dead and now I can't charge, sync or downgrade.
Went to the biggest Apple supplier in Zurich, didn't get far because it was a US phone ("nothing we can do...") but after calling the local Apple number I was told that I was basically SOL until I head back home.
Reason? If you up innocently upgrade while in Europe, iTunes sees you as being here, directs you to an European version, no warning, you upgrade - and the Euro upgrade isn't compatible with the US phone.
End result - dead phone, no options. The guy said they are getting a lot of calls about this, and he knew what happened as soon as I mentioned I upgrade here.
So for those in Europe, don't be as naive as me and upgrade - there will be no warning, you are guaranteed to end up with a dead phone and there's no one to help.
Finally, it will be quite some time before I do head back to the US so I'm in a jam.
Anyone know something they don't about fixing this here before I head home?

I saw your discussion, and well, I did this very thing, except I brought my US iPhone to France. Upgraded, etc. It works extremely well, fingers crossed. It sounds to me like you're not "bricked" but that you have a hardware problem. If you can't plug it into the wall and charge it, well, there is something really wrong there. I don't think bricked phones do that, do they?
Let me repeat: the only hardware difference between phones of different countries would be GSM vs the US non-GSM. And the iPhone can work on lots of networks, including GSM. Why would Apple build 50 different iPhones for 50 different countries? Why can my US SIM card and my French SIM card work in the same phone, with equal results? I even have a FRENCH iTunes account, that I USED in the US to back, restore, activate, upgrade.
By the way I think it's false to claim that unlocking and unjailing or whatever, and all that, necessarily bricks your iPhone. Especially if you claim it happened by simply changing countries! So if you're desperate, well, ... I would.
    Good luck. R
PS, I heard that during any upgrading or restoring you do, AIRPLANE mode should be turned OFF! It can cause bricking, I read it on the web, so it COULD be true
