IPhoto 11 persistent failures

In my latest image upload direct from a Nikon D3100 to iPhoto 11, all the images showed as imported but I could not find them in events. They were eventually found in 'latest import' but nowhere else. I took advice to rebuild the library (alt, command) and went to bed to leave the laptop to slave away. Awoke to discover I have no images since Dec 2. So, the entire Xmas colection ... gone. 450+ images disapeared.
More internet advice and I found the jpg files in the folders, but not iPhoto proper. Then did some looking about to discover iPhoto has constantly failed to load images at the events level. Dozens of missing images that I found in various iPhoto folders in the back end. Plus, the jpg versions are there but not the larger raw files. On almost every import, iPhoto refuses a few images for some reason and I have always considered that to be a camera issue - but now consider it might be iPhoto refusing pictures, since the images before and after, on the same setting, shot in the same period, were accepted.
There seems to be a wide range of complaints about iPhoto 11 - lost libraries and much frustration. Is there a bug? If so, when will it be adressed? What can be done to stabilize the system and prevent heart-stopping losses (like images from the Christmas period in a new city with someone I have not seen in too long)? I import small numbers of images, usualy, and still there are missing shots. In this instance, there were about 450 images, but everything seemed OK until, after deleting the images from my camera, I went in search of what had just been uploaded. None of them were visible on iPhoto (though, and I am grateful, they were located in the folders).
Is Aperture a better choice? If so, why? I am not a "photographer". I just expect a reliable product to store and retrieve images.
Thank you.

Operator error for your original issue
If the photo(s) are in last import then they are in an event that you are not seeing because it is not where you expect - you probably have events sorted manually
To resolve under the view menu ==> sort events adn set to yoru prefered sort rather than manual
In chasing other solution s you may have messed things up - not sure - firs toof fix the sort and wwee what you have
As to complaints - of course - this is a forum to solve problems so nearly every post here is about a "problem" - sort of like trying to judge the health status of a city by hanging  our at the hospital emergency room - yo see nothing but sick people
And for importing it is strongly recommended taht you never have iPhoto (or any other program) delete your photos - always keep the photos and after a minimum of one good backup cycle  then use teh camera's format command to reformat the card and erase the photos  --  I rotate through 3 large (32 GB) cards so I do not delete my photos from the card for six to nine months

  • IPhoto import Browser failure, after security update?

Hi, Anyone else had this problem?
    iPhoto import Browser failure.
No Events or Albums show, although PhotoBooth is visible, error message 'Open iPhoto 5 or later to see photos...'
This used to work, but not since installing Security Update 2010-006 (1.0),
    with "iTunes" (10.0.1) and JavaForMacOSX10.6Update3.
    Using iPhoto '09 (8.1.2), iMovie '09 (8.0.6).
Heard mention that now only alpha-numeric characters are allowed for file names and titles, so started replacing "&", apostrophes, etc. But there are a LOT of photos to change!
    Console shows:
    [0x0-0x15015].com.apple.iPhoto[264]
    MRMovieServer[273] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure
Tried repairing permissions, but got a warning about a SUID file has been modified and will not be repaired, (not sure if this is relevant).
Removed com.apple.iApps.plist and com.apple.iMovie8.plist, which then gave a slightly different view of the browser in iMovie.
Can no longer drag items from iPhoto either!
Any ideas of how to proceed (and remain sane)?

    Hi,
I've had something like this, since October.
Firstly, In the Utilities folder, open Disk Utility, select the disk where the Applications are (Main hard disk) click First Aid, then "Repair Permissions". Leave it running with nothing else open.
When finished, open iMovie, click the photo browser icon, any luck?
Seen an Apple support doc 'Cannot see iPhoto in other Apps', basically you may be right about ampersands & apostrophes.
In iPhoto, look at all your smart album names for non-alpha-numeric characters, and replace or delete the possible culprits. I had lots of these, including brackets (which were not a problem until recently). Keep checking your smart albums to find others, such as these: !@£$%^&()[]{}'\"|~.
Quit iPhoto and all other iLife Apps, then in your home folder, Library, Preferences, move 'com.apple.iApps.plist' to the desktop (this will be recreated when you next open an iApp/iLife application, such as iPhoto).
You may need to remake the iPhoto AlbumData.xml file, after all that name editing. See later.
Open iMovie and click the photo browser icon, if you still get the message, rather than Albums and Events, Quit iMovie.
Open iPhoto, double check your source list for folders which you may have smart albums in, (click the triangle to the left of any folders that you've made to reveal their contents). Repeat the search and replace of special characters. I'd missed a few, hiding in folders.
Now would be a good time to remake the iPhoto 'AlbumData.xml' file.
Quit all applications, go to your Pictures folder, iPhoto Library, ctrl-click, 'Show package contents', drag 'AlbumData.xml' to the desktop.
    Close the finder windows.
Open iPhoto, create a new album, then Quit, (this should remake the xml file).
Open iMovie again and click the photo browser icon. This is the point where I had success, I hope it works for you as well.
    All the best, Ian

  • Failure to recognize iPhoto library and failure to import same images

Okay so this one is strange. For some time now every time I open iPhoto is has had to rebuild itself. I took this as a bug and let it do it each time.
Now with Photos being on my machine I saw this as an opportunity to see if it fixed the issue with the new app. I opened Photos and asked it to select the MASSIVE iPhoto library I use. It said it can not open that one and failed after several times trying it.
I then took the step of exporting over 10k images and videos into a folder on one of my drives and then reviewing everything within the files to ensure no bad data or 0k files or anything. All looks good. I can however over and open each random file I tested and it looks okay. So the integrity of the images and videos seem okay to me.
I then also reset the permissions on ALL the files to 777 and the folder to ensure that the system could do anything it wants with them.
From here I tried to import them into Photos and instead of the 10,219 I am supposed to see it only imported a little over 3k and then said that the rest were not readable due to bad (or missing) meta data. I downloaded a meta data editor and tried to batch edit something like the date updated or date created to see if re-setting it with batch may update the meta data to a more modern format and allow for importing. That also did not work.
So here I am with no way to get all my content into Photos and not help I can find anywhere online to work around this.
I am almost tempted to run and PS script to open, process and save each file to get it to reset the information for each image. This seems like an extreme step but I am at a loss as to what to do other than have the system see them as totally new files.
This is also NOT ideal as I will loose any meta data I did have like date creation and I will have 10k files that all think they were made today. Manually sorting everything again into albums is also not very exciting to me but without being able to direct open or import the iPhoto library I am not clear what else I can do.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for posting this because it explains a lot to me as a troubleshooter trying to help other people. No one should be using the guest network feature for their own devices. By default, most routers prevent devices on the guest network from accessing devices on the main network for security reasons. Some routers let you disable that security feature but it's a bad idea if you are letting other people use your guest network.
Furthermore, everyone should have WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) disabled in their router if their router supports the "external registrar" authentication method. That's the method where you enter an 8-digit code which is printed on the bottom (or side) of the router into a device you want to add to your network. You can read more about this here:
    http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/723755
To the best of my knowledge, Apple routers are not vulnerable to this exploit because they do not support "external registrar".
The major brand with the worst exposure to this problem is Linksys because WPS currently cannot be disabled in their consumer routers (at the time I'm writing this). The situation should begin to improve in March 2012 as Linksys starts to roll out firmware upgrades for certain models. Here's a link to the Linksys firmware release schedule:

  • Upgrading iPhoto database EPIC FAILURE

Since upgrading to Yosemite a few months ago I can't successfully upgrade my iPhoto database. It gets about 95% done and then goes no further. It does not fail but does not complete. I have let it go as long as 48 hours. I have tried this at least ten times. In the end I have force quit. How can I ever get iPhoto to open again?

    Your db is corrupted.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto library open failure?

    Problem opening iPhoto?

    Problem answering question?
If you want help you’ll need to give us more information. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos" means the helper is just guessing. More information means you get better assistance.

  • Persistent failure of Bonjour-mediated iOS/MacOS Wi-fi after using WPA/WPA2

I do not clearly understand this, but there is no doubt of these facts. I've been doing this stuff since 1965, and I know how to isolate a problem.
My wife has been supplied by her job with a relatively antique IBM T-series Thinkpad, and she is expected to use it whenever she works from home. This elderly bit of hardware cannot, apparently, be upgraded to use WPA2, and so, from time to time, I have to back off our Time Capsule-based home network to WPA/WPA2 mode. (However, during my research, the actual Thinkpad has been miles away; it's not a factor in itself.)
This alone would be nuisance enough, but it is rendered a great deal more of one by the fact that, as soon as I do it, all my iOS apps that use Wi-fi to communicate directly with my Mac stop working, saying that my Mac cannot be found. The list includes Todo (Appigo) failing to find Appigo Sync, and SplashID (SplashData) and Splash Shopper (also SplashData) failing to find their Mac counterparts.
Worse yet, the effect is permanent. Resetting the network to WPA2 Personal doesn't help. Terminating and restarting the apps (yes, really terminating, not backgrounding) doesn't help. Disconnecting from Wi-fi and reconnecting doesn't help. Even rebooting both the iPhone and the Mac doesn't help. The only thing that fixes the problem is to reset the Time Capsule to factory state and then recreate the network.
I even tried creating a guest network and setting that to WPA/WPA2, leaving the main network on WPA2 Personal, but as soon as I did it, iOS/Mac communication broke down again, just as though I had changed the main network.
There is clearly a bug in either the Time Capsule firmware or the AirPort Utility. Whether this bug is itself the cause of the failure or merely uncovers a second bug (which might be elsewhere) I cannot say.

  • Re: Pages persistent failure to respond

For the past week I have been experiencing a huge problem with Pages, the program fails to respond; at times numerous pages docs are "open" in the dock at the bottom of the screen, but when I click on them to access them, after displaying on the main screen they remain unusable as the widget whirls endlessly, other times Pages is even less responsive, namely no "open" docs even appear in the dock.
There are no viruses or worms, all other programs are responding normally, only Pages is capput!

Peter, thank you for your helpfulness and expertise.  I apologize for not including the necessary system info. with my request: OS X Version 10.8.4 (12E55); MacBook Pro, Early 2011; Pages '09 Version 4.3 (1048); Apple programs were up to date; I manually updated Intego Virus Barrier X6 software (which is set to automatically update) after experiencing the protracted problems, then updated to VirusBarrier 2013; I also did a full system scan after updating.
I have not had the extreme problem today and have been going into documents to remove fonts and links that may be problematic, taking smallest steps first.  Prior to this Mac, I only had used PCs and consequently am a long way behind the curve.
I don't know whether the problem is resolved yet, but if everything is working ok within a week's time, I will check off "This solved my question."
    Thanks again,
    Brad

  • [iPhoto] Assertion failure/Modal window problem

I've been trying to order prints through iPhoto (6.0.6) but when I hit the "Order prints" button nothing happens. I get the following error in the Console log. It seems as though iPhoto is trying to spawn a new window (which makes sense) and can't.
I've reinstalled iPhoto, rebooted, etc. but keep getting same problem.

  • Iphoto 9.23 (Snow) can't open  9.42 db (Mountain)

If  you have 2 macs, one under snow (to keep access to old files under Appleworks and because it works fine) and one under Mountain Lion (because you just bought it new), and if you upgrade the applications regularly, you already are upset as you can't sync files like contacts, etc... between the 2 macs as you did before, you are also upset because a bug like the Mail function "save in iphoto" still persists after several months...
But when you discover that your 2 iphoto apps become uncompatible despite they all are "iphoto 11" ... you are REALLY upset !
On snow, last version is 9,23. On Mountain, last version is 9.42.
If you open a db with 9,42 under Mountain,  you will no more be able to open it on the other mac running 9,23 under Snow !!!
    And no alert !!!!!!
When does Apple plans to make a 9,23+ version able to read any of the iphoto 11 db, including the 9.42 dbs ?
Would anybody have a tip to solve this in the mean time ?
    Thks !
Happy new year to all anyway

if you open an iPhoto library with a newer version you will be notified that the library is going to be converted adn will no longer be accessable by previous versions and given the option to coninue or quit
As to when Appel plans to make 9.23. compatible with newer versions - My guess is never - although no one here knows anything about what Apple's plans are or shen tehy will do anything - and since the TOU forbid speculation on Apple policies if someone did know they could not disclose the information
In the mean time (which probably is forever) your choices are to upgrade from 9.3.2 to 9.4.2, to load your backup of the 9.3.2 library from before you choose to upgrade it or to start over with a new 9.3.2 library importing your photos again

  • Audio Unit Validation Failure

    Hi,
I'm running Locig Pro 7 but I'm having problems with one of my synths. When I open the AU Manager and run a scan it fails validation. The synth is Rob Papen Blue. In the result it says this:
    Checkeing Parameter Setting
    Using AudioUnitSetParameter
    Using AudioUnitScheduleParameter
ERROR: Buffer overun was detected when rendering
    FAIL
And then it says to correct the errors above. I have the same with another plug-in called OhmBoyz.
If anyone knows what to do, please let me know.
    Thanks
    Much appreciated.

Sometimes Validation is unnecessarily stringent. I take it you can't use the synth even so?
"Buffer Overrun" — haven't heard that one for a while!
If in doubt, you could try re-installing your synth, but validation is quite likely to fail again if the routine just doesn't like it.
Perhaps someone else could suggest a method for getting around persistent failure to validate; I had heard there was a way, but I'm afraid I don't remember what it was. Sorry!

  • Help viewer is not loading content

When I try to view the help files for certain apps, nothing loads. I get a spinning gray wheel. I first noticed this when trying to view the help files for iPhoto (9.5.1), but other apps such as iTunes and iBooks Author have the same problem. Some apps do have help files that work -- probably the ones that ship with Mac OS X such as Calculator.
I am having the same problem on two different MacBook Pro models, both running Mavericks 10.9.4. They are on different networks (my home and work machines).
I did look in the Console for clues and see this whenever the help fails to load:
9/8/14 4:36:31.254 PM HelpViewer[26182]: https://help.apple.com/Library/Documentation/Resources/Flamingo/6/flamingo.js: TypeError: 'null' is not an object (evaluating 't.length') (line: 2)

Sometimes just closing and reopening the Help window will clear up the problem. If it doesn't, log out or restart the computer and try again. Otherwise, you may need to delete the Help cache.
Back up all data before proceeding.

              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Trash. Log out, log back in, and test. Help pages will be slow to load at first.
If that doesn't work, the problem may be caused by network conditions. It may go away by itself, though I can't say how long you should wait.
A persistent failure to load help data has been reported as an issue with satellite networks. Test on a different network, if possible. I've also seen at least one report that Photo Stream in iCloud can mysteriously interfere with Help. I'm not sure whether that's true, but try disabling Photo Stream, if applicable.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select

  • Help will not load in ANY Apple app (iTunes, Safari, etc)

I'm unable to load Help for any Apple application (Safari, Mail, iTunes, iPhoto, etc). I get this error message: "Help isn’t available for (name of app; Safari for example)."
