IPhoto '11 questions about saving

New version is very confusing. I use Photoshop Elements to edit my photos. When I edit them, there are several photos in the folder. What are they all? When I want to save them, there is a bar with a "gobbledygook" series of letters and numbers. What's that all about? iLife '09 was a lot simpler!

If you use Elements as an external editor then you don't need to use Save As unless you're working with Raws or choosing to save to a different format from your original.
The Folder with the "confusing set of numbers and letters" is within the iPhoto Library and not designed for user access.

Question about saving calendar and contatcs

Without knowing Outlook version involved and/or whether there are any additional email accounts configured in any given profile beyond the one being migrated to IMAP - some general comments
#1 - Simply add the same email account as an IMAP account to the same profile. That will result in the "default data file" remaining the same which contains the default "contact & calendar" folders. There is nothing that limits the
same email account to be configured with multiple protocols unless there is a setting that also needs to be set at the server level (i.e. GMail)
#2 - Delete the related "non-Imap" account from the profile - that is has no impact on the data file associated with the account
At a minimum - Contacts/Calendar folders remain as is with the only caveat being that the email folders in the original PST file will contain data which you (your users) may or may not want to completely get rid of (something you may want to check/confirm
beforehand)

Question about saving JPEGs in Photoshop for use in FCP

Ah, Mr Stupit here, I don't see anywhere else to ask, and since the pics will be used in FCP I"ll try here.
In photoshop I rotated the pics to get the figure upright for ease of handling in FCP, and now I'm asked to save the pic and I'm given the choice of Baseline Standard, Baseline Optimized and Progressive, with Baseline Optimized being the default. Usually I go with the default, but now I figured I'd be clever and ask the geniuses here what they think: Which should I go with?
Another question, am I losing some quality by re-saving this JPEG? I don't want to get into whether I should save as Tiffs, I find my FCP struggles with such large sizes and I'm happy with the JPEGs. Of course, maybe that's why I'm Mr Stupit.

The problem when I save them as tiffs, png, etc is they become really large and when I open them in Viewer or place them in a sequence I have to wait and wait while the little balls spins. I'm thinking that maybe I'll just use the original JPEGs and rotate them in the Canvas. As long as I don't re-save them there shouldn't be any difference in quality between using them in FCP as opposed to re-saving them as Tiffs, etc, and then using them in FCP, right?
Sorry, but someone on another forum said just using JPEGs in FCP will result in a loss of quality though why should an untouched original somehow lose quality by being placed in an FCP timeline, I don't get it nor did I get an explanation.

Make sure that you have set Firefox to remember passwords.
* Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Remember passwords for sites"
Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) [[Private Browsing]] mode.
* You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
* To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
* Uncheck: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

Newbie question about saving files

Hi all,
A newbie question here, and maybe it is a dumb question, but I can't get my head around this and sofar found no answer in the forums here.
When I save a file on my macbook, I can only save it to "top" folders.
What I mean is I try to save a file for instance to documents/worddocs/lyrics just to say something, then I have to save the file first to documents, and the move it to the lyrics folder via finder or move it to :worddocs folder and then move it again to the lyrics folder. Hope you still get my drift here
Is there a way to just save it to the subfolders without going through all this moving around?

When you click File>Save As, you will see the Save As window pop up. At the top, you will see a box entitled Save As, which has a space for your to enter the file name. To the right of this box is an arrow pointing down. Click it. The full file hierarchy will be seen. Then you can save directly to the file you want.

[SOLVED] Question about Saving Cached Packages

Hey Guys,
I've got a couple of systems running Arch right now, and have a 3rd that I was thinking about setting up this weekend. The second of the 2 I already have is very recent and I haven't cleared out the package cache yet. If I were planning on installing the same applications on the next system, could I just save the package files in /var/cache/pacman to a CD or something and just copy them back to the new system once I have the CORE installed? I figure this would save an hour or so of downloading, which would be nice. If it is possible, is there anything else I need to have aside from the packages themselves (ie. is there like a header file somewhere)?

Well - it could work - or it might not. Better solution is to make another repository using your recent packages.
Try to write this to your /etc/pacman.conf:
[name_of_your_own_repo]
Include = /path_to_your_own_repo
I haven't tried it personally, but it should work. If it will prefer packages from other repos (community, extra), then write it somewhere above other repos in /etc/pacman.conf or use pacman -S name_of_your_own_repo/package
You should read about Pacman at Arch-wiki to know more about making your own repository before you will decide to try it.
Either way, write your experience here, please, I'd want to know if it works or not

Acrobat 9 pro extended question about saving -- yes

Hi guys,
my problem is kinda simple: If i change a pdf document using acrobat 9 pro and save, it just saves at the original document I was opening. Of course, when I choose save to, it suggest the own documents folder.
Problem now: If I change something and want to close it, the program asks me to save. If I answer yes, it doesnt just saves, it's suggesting the own documents folder, like I'd say "save to".
Is there any possibilty to change this?

I think the print margin aspect depends on how you are creating the PDF. If you open the graphics directly in Acrobat, the graphics will open with the margins defined in the graphic in the cases I have done. Small pictures have a real small margin and such. Laying what you want out in another application, be it WORD or one of the Adobe layout packages, is the better way to accomplish the task. Acrobat is meant to provide printing, not layout like you are trying to do.
To put the graphics in directly and be able to adjust size, you would need to add blank pages and on each locate the image on a button (Tools menu). The button would then be set up with the ICON only, using the image at the icon. The advantage of this approach is that you can scale the graphic. If you import the graphic directly, you can not scale it.
Again, the best approach is to use another program to layout your photos as desired and then print to the Adobe PDF printer. The other user has suggested WORD and that is one possibility. If you use WORD, be sure to use the ctrl-Enter or break menu to create new pages. Do not use line breaks to create the paging.

Where to store photos? Questions about iPhoto too.

I have a iMac and am thinking of getting a 17 inch pro, and while viewing a macworld live update I saw iPhoto 09 and was wondering some things about iPhoto 08 (the one I have, It will probably be the same for iPhoto 09)
Where are the pics stored in iPhoto? I have nearly 20 gigs of pics I was going to put in the Pictures folder on the Macbook. Would it be saved in 2 spaces taking up 40 gigs of space? Or just in the Pictures folder?
Also, about the new tagging stuff. If I spend hours geotagging the photos, face tagging, and all that other organizational things. Would it be saved in just iPhoto? or would it save to the pictures. I havent converted the entire house to Mac yet (im working on it) and have a mostly Microsoft Vista house. If I moved that picture to a pc running Vista, would the tags and other info still be there?

By default, within the iPhoto Library Folder. You can run iPhoto Referencing your files but I don’t recommend it. The usual solution to the “double HD space” is to trash your own file system when you’re set up in iPhoto.

NO one outside of Apple knows and will until we actually get a copy of the app. However, I will point out that at this point, iPhoto has +no cross platform ability whatever+.

Few questions about icloud!!!

hi guys....i rly find it complicated to deal with this icloud thing i wanna ask a few questions ..so my 1st question is that how to get the camera roll back on my photo stream cuz i thought am saving space and i deleted all the photos in my photo stream how to get that back and if its not possiple is the pics i deleted still on i cloud ?
2nd question about back up..so when i back up through icloud all the pics i have wither it was on the photo stream or not is backed up ?

Note that Photo Stream does not store photos: any photo in Photo Stream is deleted from iCloud 30 days after being added. Photo Stream is designed to sync your pictures to all your devices. If your photos were removed from Photo Stream and Camera Roll, the only way to get them back is by restoring a backup with those photos.
Your phone backup includes all the photos taken with it (those ones which were stored on Camera Roll), so if you have lost them, you can restore a backup. See -> Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support

You MUST be talking about the Properties panel, where adjustment layer info is shown, because the dialogs you get when you do things like Image - Adjust - Levels or Image - Adjust - Curves is not resizeable in any way I can see. At least not on a PC.
No, there's no special option that allows dialog sizes to be saved separately. It's just one panel, and the size of the panel itself defines the size of the contents up to each of their max sizes.

A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?

1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.

I have a question about the programming of a waveform's legend. I

months ago.
I went satisfied but I ve just noticed that this code
(See Code old_legend_test.llb with main.vi as main function) operates a
little different from my expectances.
Therefore I have a new question and I want to know if it
is possible by labview programming to plot and show, on a waveform
chart, a signal with activ plot superior to zero (0) without to be
obliged to plot and show a signal with activ plot equal to zero (0) or
inferior to the desired activ plot.
I give you an example
of what I m meaning. I have by example 4 signals (Signal 0, 1, 2 and 3)
and each signal corresponds respectively to a channel (Chan1, Chan2,
Chan3, Chan4). I want to control the legend (activ plot, plot name and
plot color) programmatically. Is it possible with labview to plot signal
1 or 2 or 3 or (1, 3) or (2,3) or (1,2,3) or other possible combination
without to active the signal with the corresponding activ plot zero
(0)?

control the input selected values again I get them back but I don't
understand why they have no effect on the legend of my waveform chart.

The behavior
you have is completely normal. You can control the number of row displayed in
the legend and this rows are linked to the data you send to your graph. Thus,
if you have 3 arrays of data, let say chan1, chan2 and chan3, you can choose
which data you want to display in your graph using the property node (Active
plot and visible). But for the legend as you send 3 plots there is an array of
the plot name [chan1, chan2, chan3] and you can display 0, 1, 2 or 3 rows of
this array but you cannot control the order in this array! So, to be able to
change this array you have to only send data you need to you graph. I'm not
sure my explanations are clear so I have implemented a simple example doing
that.

General Advice and Question on Saving Book Files

I am still relatively new to FrameMaker. I attended a one on one course 12 months ago for two days. When I attended this course I was totally oblivious to the features of FM, it was totally foreign software. I had looked through the User Guide and as part of the course received Classroom in a Book. I have not spent a lot of time on FM in the last 12 months as I still have to produce manuals in the old format. The changeover is a huge project.
I have searched this forum many times and found the answers I have needed to many of my questions and learnt so much that I had not fully understood.
I would just like to confirm now with the users of this forum that I am going about my project in converting to FrameMaker in the right way and I have a question on saving books etc.
I have Operator and Service manuals for four machines (with variations between each machine and then variations between each of those basic models). Parts of the Operator and Service manuals are interchangeable.
I want to be able to single source my material and I am setting up an Excel spreadsheet which will breakdown each section of both manuals. Once completed when a machine is ordered the Excel spreadsheet will produce the details of the files needed to complete a book (manual). There will still be work needed on the book files before the manual can be produced.
My files are double sided with each Chapter starting on the right hand page and I am using variables and conditional text. The manuals contain columns, graphics, tables etc.
I have done test runs and have managed to accomplish the layout in PDF that I want for the final manuals which will be printed. I am only working on four machines at this stage, once this is set up others will be added or I may have to set up another lot of single source files.
Am I on the right track?
My specific question is that currently I use master files for each machine which are updated as needed. These files are then saved to another folder and identified by a Serial Number and Customer. The serialised files are then saved to PDF. I would like to continue this process as in the future the manuals for that specific machine may need to be revised (i.e. Rev. 0 to Rev. 1 and so on).
So basically I have all my single source files from which I produce a book file and save it to an appropriate folder which identifies its Serial Number and Customer. I don’t know if I have missed something very simple but I want these serialised books to remain as is, I do not want them updated when I make a change to my single source documents. I want to be able to produce my manuals for any number of machines from my single source without changing the book files that have already produced a manual. Is this possible?
I am using FrameMaker 7.2 b144.
I hope this posting provides a clear view of what I am trying to achieve.

It sounds like you want to be able to open the book files and print without updating...
This isn't the case. Each book will need to be updated before output.
The reason is that your pagecount (and thus any toc, index, and xref's) will be different in each book and thus will need to be updated.
The books will still need a opening and updating prior to output, but you could easily (cheaply) script that process so that you could batch output the books.
