IPhoto is refusing to close

My iPhoto is refusing to close, it says it is downloading pictures (not the case) so I can't restart following an upgrade. How can I force it to close?
Thanks

  • IPhoto 5 won't close down

I haven't had any trouble with iPhoto 5 until this week. Now the program refused to close down normally and even Force Quit is sometimes not able to do the job. Also, when editing photos, the Saving Changes bar comes on with its buddy, the spinning beachball and nothing happens. Force Close is then used. I have Repaired Permissions a couple of times, but no change. I have checked for software updates, but all is current.
I have AppleCare as a backup but wanted to canvass the community first.

Try rebuilding your iPhoto library. This is undocumented, but when starting up iPhoto hold down CMD-OPTION (i.e. ⌘⌥). When the dialog box comes up, select the option to rebuild your entire database; it's fast and safe.

  • A Page loaded and refuses to close. Nothing i do will get it closed.

A website i was using to inquire about web-hosting managed to open another tab on my browser with an add page for their website. this tab refuses to close. if i close all tabs on that window until the spam one is the only one left, then im stuck with firefox open because there is still no way to close it. and no i havent restarted my computer because i have things to get done and should be able to fix this without shutting anything down. but im not smart, so someone tell me what to do ;) thanks!

Do you see any alert messages when you try to close the tab?
Did you try to go to another tab and middle-click that tab to close the tab or possibly use "Close Other Tabs" in the tab bar context menu?

    Hi-
My iPhoto will not quit/close as it keeps saying that it's "importing" photos however, there isn't anything connected to the laptop that it would be importing photos from. How can I "force" the program to shut down? Due to it not closing, it wont permit me to turn the computer off.
    please help!

  • My MacBook Pro makes strange noises when I open iPhoto and when I close it.

My MacBook Pro makes strange noises when I close my laptop and when I open iPhoto.  iPhoto then proceeds to close when the noise stops.  Is there any cure for this? Please help.

What kind of noise? Any other app make noise?

  • HT1338 Since my last update to Itunes the application refuses to close

Since my last update to Itunes the application refuses to close and slowly locks my laptop until I reboot.  When I reboot it reloads all of my email deleted all day and sometimes the day prior.  I have run disk utilities repair disk permissions.  This works for a short and the whole thing starts all over again.  Does any on have any hints?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Mail is continuously trying to import messages and refuses to close...

I have Mail set up with an IMAP account and for about a week now it has failed to import any of my messages. To make matters worse, it is in a constant state of processing and it refuses to close.
It appears that Mail is stubbornly trying, and constantly failing, to import a message from the server. How do I put an end to this vicious cycle without deleting the account from Mail? (I don't want to risk losing all of my organized folders or any other data for that matter).
    Here's what Console is showing:

  • IPhoto 6 refuses to display many of my photos

I have a number of photos that I use in Slideshows that suddenly refuse to display in the newest version of iPhoto. They come up as a solid black screen. In trying to get them in the editor, the progress wheel continues to spin with no results. They are all standard JPEG photos taken with either a Canon Digital Rebel or 20D, so I don't know what the problem is.
These same photos show just fine in Preview and GraphicConverter, so it appears I will have to make GraphicConverter the application for my Slideshows from now on! I wish I knew what makes iPhoto more fussy than other photo programs.

    Hi Griff,
I can't find the other thread - what is it called? I have the same issue.
    Cheers

  • IPhoto (6.0.5) closes automatically when running a slideshow

iPhoto has been closing by itself when, for example, I'm running a slideshow from one of my albums. I just downloaded the new update as this was happening with the previous version of iPhoto as well and I was hoping the new update would fix the problem.
I can start a slideshow and it will run about 5-6 photos and then iPhoto just closes. Any ideas?

  • Can't import pictures to iPhoto and can't close app

    Good Day!
    iMac with OS X 10.8.2
    iPhoto 9.4.2
iPhoto as stopped working recently. It used to be fine.
I cannot import pictures anymore: From camera, it says it's importing but it hangs and I have to force quit. From desktop nothing happens.
Also, when I try to quit iPhoto it hangs. Have to force quit.
I have restarted iPhoto with "option-command" keys and went through all the options with no success.
I have deleted iPhoto (dragged from applications menu to trash) and reinstalled it with no success.
Any idea what I could try next?
    Regards,
    003

You could try to recover using Time Capsule, but I fear that the backed up iPhoto Library suffers from the same corruption. You could go back in time to earlier Time Machine backups on Time Capsule to try to find an uncorrupted, older version of your iPhoto Library.
Here's how to move all your photos into a brand new iPhoto Library. This is a brute force way to get all your original photos (and events) into a new, clean Library. I think that your album information will not be moved into the new Library and you'll need to recreate that.
I normally would not recommend doing this but because you have already rebuit your Library using Apple's method and also using IPhoto Library Manager and haven't succeeded, this is like a last resort.
    (1) Start iPhoto with option key held down to create a brand new, empty iPhoto Library. (I think you have done this already, actually.)
    (2) With iPhoto running from this new, empty iPhoto Library, go to your old, corrupted iPhoto Library in the Finder. Control-click on the corrupted Library and select Show Package Contents.
    (3) There should be a folder called Masters there. It should have lots of folders and photo files inside. Drag that Masters folder onto your open iPhoto window where you are running iPhoto connected to the new, empty iPhoto Library.
    (4) This should import (copy) into the new Library all the original photos from the old, corrupted Library.
    (5) You may find that the Event names are not what they were in the old, corrupted Library, but I think the photos will still be grouped into the same Events as before.
    (6) Close iPhoto. Reopen iPhoto, see that this new Library appears to have all your photos as best you can.
You can return to your old, corrupted iPhoto Library for more attempts to revive it because this procedure does not do anything to that old Library. It simply copies all the photos into a new one.
Make sure you have enough disk space to essentially make a copy of the old Library befor eembarking on this.

  • Iphoto, note, notewriter, all close unexpectedly and can't open the app program

Just had my computer less than 10 days... I have problem opening up iphoto, note and notewriter...all close unexpectedly and can't open these app.
What cause this problem and how to fix it?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • IPhoto simply refuses to open

this is driving me nutz: i bought iLife, i installed iLife. Garage Band works, iTunes works, iMovie works, iDVD works...everything works...
...EXCEPT iPHOTO!! The doofy little icon bounces, then I get a message: "iPhoto has unexpectedly quit. Would you like to send a message to Apple?"
YEAH, BUT I CAN'T REPEAT IT HERE, BUDDY!
NO, I don't want to send them an error report, I want the **** software I paid them for to work, for gosh sakes.
    I have tried about everything:
    rebuild permissions
    delete preferences
    reload the software
    Nuttin' honey!
I have a G4 Mirror Drive doors dual 1.25Ghz with 60GB internal hd and 1.75GB of memory, OS 10.3.9; external 160GB firewire drive (no i didn't try to install it there: iLife is on the start up drive). Its in a beige room with brown carpet if you need that info, too. No new hardware added in ages.
If someone can give me a fix for this problem, you'll make me a very happy camper.
    Steve

There are three things that first come to mind:
    -corrupt preference
    -corrupt caches
-outdated iPhoto plugin [REINSTALLED NEW/CROSS THIS ONE OFF]
-to check to see if it is a preference, drag your
entire Preferemce folder to the desktop and then see
    if you can launch iPhoto
    DID IT, SAME CONDITION EXISTS...
-to check to see if it is a cache file go to
~/Library/caches and delete the iPhoto cache file
    DID IT...SAME CONDITION EXISTS
Fonts also can be problems with programs not
launching. do you have problems with any other Apple
    program?
NO PROBLEMS WITH ANY OTHER PROGRAM, APPLE OR OTHERWISE...HAVEN'T ADDED A NEW FONT IN AT LEAST 8 MONTHS.
This all really has me stumped. Why it works with a new user and not my admin user is just totally beyond me. I have done disk repair, verified and repaired permissions, run Macaroni, restarted...and still iPhoto refuses...flat out REFUSES...to open.
Judging by the list of people on this (and other) forum(s) who have EXACTLY the same problem as I am experiencing, Apple has a fly in the ointment somewhere on this.
Thanks for your help on this problem. I may just have to resign myself to setting up fast user switching and changing users when I want to use iPhoto. thanks for this one, apple...

  • IPhoto '11 refusing to detect ANY new faces in imported photos

I've been using iPhoto forever.  It's always "just worked."  I just got back from vacation and imported all of my photos.  After deleting half of them and doing only some very minor "tweaks" (adjusting levels, etc.) to a few of them, I wanted to name the faces.
I noticed that iPhoto didn't identify a single face in the 150 or so just-imported pics.
Also, the button to manually add a face is grayed out!
Tried "Detect Missing Faces" but it does nothing.
Any ideas?  Anybody seen this before?  This is a new one to me and I did browse the Discussions and haven't seen this one.
Thanks in advance for your help.

iPhoto 11 seems extremely buggy. I think I'm going to downgrade back to the prior version. Anyone have suggestions before I take this action?
Not really - have you upgraded to version 9.1.1?
    Problems:
    1) When ever I import new photos they no longer show up in new events or the "photos" grouping of all photos. They did get imported though and I can access them by selecting "last 12 months".
This can be a sort issue - they are there but not where you expect - look at the view menu ==> sore events
    2) If I manually try and split an existing event and all photos in the new event disappear from all listings.
How do you "manually" split an event?

  • IPhoto library refuses to be recognized

I've moved to new iMac at work. Just transfered the iPhoto Library from the old multi-user machine (from my user window) via firewire. Put it in the pictures folder as a whole. (inside the folder looks good--things are still organized correctly)
Now when I open iPhoto with the option key held-down, I navigate to the pictures folder and iPhoto opens just a dozen or so of the +1,000 photos in the folder. It makes no sense to me where it got them, they were in the middle of all those year by year files.

I was hoping the database rebuild would trigger iPhoto to update the library to version 6. I don't know why, but it sounds like this library just hasn't been updated. Since the library structure is so different in v6, iPhoto can't read your v2 library properly.
We just need a way to trigger iPhoto to update that library. As I said before, you should get a warning that this is about to happen. The warning will indicate that once the library is updated it will be unreadable by previous versions of iPhoto.
As TD asked, is the v2 library still available on the old Mac? If so, you could move your broken iPhoto library (to the desktop or the trash) and copy over the v2 library again. Once copied to the new Mac, run BatChmod to correct permissions on the library folder. (I know it didn't make a difference before, but it could be the reason that iPhoto didn't update your library.) Then option-launch iPhoto, make sure it is pointed to open the new copy, and see if you get the warning that this library needs to be updated. If so, allow the update and see if all is well.
If you don't still have the old library available, someone very clever will need to come up with another way to trigger the update (if it is still possible). I wonder if you could do it just by moving the library around a bit. Like, move it to the desktop. Launch iPhoto and let it create a new, empty library. Quit, move the transferred library back to the Pictures folder, Option-launch and point iPhoto back to the transferred library, see if iPhoto wants to update it. A game of bait and switch.
If it's not possible to trigger the library update, you may be forced to manually create and repopulate your library. The second half of this technical artical tells how to do this while avoiding importing the thumbnails.
Edit: I just read your response to TD. It's great that you still have the old library. I suggest you try recopying, as I described above. [It's not about the library6.iPhoto file getting corrupted in the transfer, because the v2 library didn't have this file at all. The problem is the library not being updated to a v6 version when you first opened it on the new Mac.]
