Iphoto library needs to be reorganized!

I am using iphoto 9.6.1 on macbook running Yosemite. My iphoto library contains another iphoto library as a subfolder. In that iphoto library using the 'show package contents' command I find 2 more iphoto libraries, one called library.iphoto and the other library6.iphoto.  Everything works fine in iphoto but when I export the photos to 'photo' the subfolders picture are not included in the export. They contain about 1/3 of my photos. Can I shift the contents of those libraries into the main folder?  I read that messing with the library can be a bad thing. Any suggestions?  thanks

This is library hat has been updated from earlier version. Note the little arrow on the bottom of the Originals folder? That means it's an alias and that resolves to the Masters folder.
I would rebuild the Library with iPhoto Library Manager, and try migrate that to Photos.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Note: you do not import the iPhoto Library to Photos. You simply open it:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

  • "the iPhoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." WHAT?

Ran software update a few weeks back and now I cannot seem to open iPhoto or access files within.
The error message as soon as I open up iPhoto reads: "the iPhoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."
What do I do to overcome this?  What happens to the files in "UPGRADE?"
Should I be worried about the safety of the files during upgrade?

Yes - you should always be worried about yoru files if they are important to you - never upgrade without backingup just in case (the normal case is no problem but you must be prepared)

  • Can't open iphoto library needs to be upgraded

can't open iphoto a message window opens and asks to upgrade or quit   The message states that photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto

Then you're going to have to upgrade.
Make a back up first, of course.

  • Iphoto library needs to be upgraded?

I replaced my hard drive, reinstalled 10.6, and used migration assistant to restore from Time Machine (and will never do that again). iPhoto itself works fine (when the library is set to be the 'new' empty library), but when I try to access my old iPhoto library, I get the message:
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. . . "
If I click 'upgrade' it says "iphoto was unable to open this library" then closes.
I had 10.6 on my old hard drive, and 10.6 on my new one. Nothing should be different. I can see the individual photos by going to 'show package contents.'
    Thank you!

At this stage you do not have an iPhoto library - an iPhoto library is a special folder (called a package) that contains many elements - original photos, previews of modified photos, thumbnails and files describing to iPhoto what is there, what edits have been made, how to connect the dots so to speak - simply having a package named iPhoto library is not an iPhoto library and to get an iPhoto library from a Time machine Backup you have to use TM to restore the library - it is the only way to properly collect all of the correct elements and put the puzzle back together
    Your only alternatives are
1 - to use TM to restore the library (launch TM and go to the proper time, select the Photo library and click restore
    or
2 - go into the TM backup and find all of your original photos and copy them out and then create a new iPhoto library using iPhoto and importing the original photos

  • Iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Will my Facebook albums remain?

I just upgraded my computer to yosemite and that includes the iPhoto application.
After opening iPhoto it says "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." I'm worried that if I chose to upgrade I will 1. lose all my photos and 2. have my synced facebok albums taken off Facebook.
One time I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and lost all my Facebook album photos so I don't want to make the same mistake.
So does anyone know if I chose to go through with this upgrade will I lose my photos in the iPhoto and the synced albums on Facebook? If I do lose photos, how do I go recover my previous iPhoto version?

Just to confirm. When I saved a copy of my iPhoto library on my external harddrive that's "backing-up" right?
Also, is there anyway on Facebook to tell which albums are synced with my iPhoto so that I know which ones will be gone if something does go wrong?
Sorry one more question Larry. I keep reading issues people are having with upgrading their iPhoto to 9.6 and the upgraded iPhoto does not recognize their library (see: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6676471). If this happens to me and I have to repair or re-install my iPhoto will my Facebook albums be affected?
Thanks for your help Larry I appreciate it

  • IPhoto Library Needs to be Rebuilt

Error message said to reopen iPhoto while holding down th Option & Command keys.  Tried several times but this didn't work.  Messsage then said to rebuild th library from backup.  I use Timekeeper.  How to I rebuild the library?

    You mean Time Machine?

  • Just upgraded to Maverick, now iPhoto library needs to be upgraded. Can I safely do this without losing my photos?

I didn't do any backups before upgrading to Maverick...

Well do a back up now.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Corrupt iPhoto library, need to restore

I loaded up iPhoto and some of my albums were showing blank thumbnails - the right number, but they were blank. And if I clicked on the thumbnail, the image opened but after closing it down the thumbnail was still incorrect. So I did cmd+opt when I opened it up and chose to rebuild - I checked the top 4 of the 6 available options. After leaving it for an hour and being told that 4164 versions had been restored, it still wasn't completing or even looking close to completing. So I closed it down, probably a mistake because when I loaded it up I had no events, no photos, or anything. The iPhoto library file was actually still the correct size (12GB app.) so my immediate reaction was to try to rebuild it again from that file. At this point, about 15 mins in, it looks like it is heading in the same direction. Which leads me to think that restoring from a Time Machine backup is probably the only option.
I've seen conflicting advice on how to restore from a backup and in some cases, it referred to older versions of iPhoto. I'm using the current, most up to date version so can anyone point me in the direction of the best way to do a restore.
    Thanks...

to restore a file or folder in TM launch TM and in the resulting widow go back in time to the point you wnat to restore from - select the item to restore (the iPhoto library) and click restore and let TM do its thing - it probably is a good idea to use the keep both option until you complete the process rather than overwrite the current library - you can simply drag the current library to the desktop prior to restoring too

  • Upgraded to Yosemite.  Upgraded iPhoto.  iPhoto library needs upgrade.  Stops responding.

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 that I upgraded to Yosemite.  iPhoto stops responding every time I try to upgrade the library.  It hangs on the Upgrading iPhoto Database.   I have an extensive library of photos and wonder if it is a memory issue.  Anyone experienced this?

    Try repair the other one.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2

  • Wife and I have shared iPhoto library that resides in a shared disc image on my MacMini HD. Works fine when logged in to my profile. In wife's profile, when opening iPhoto we get the message "the iPhoto library needs to be upgraded...".

    We're both on version 9.5.
I've verified the permissions and rebuilt the library.
If I select 'upgrade' the library will open but it clearly shouldn't be happening and it is inconvenient.
Thanks in advance for the help!

  • Multiple users on multiple macs sharing iPhoto Library

How can different family members (using personal logins) all access the same iPhoto library, regardless of which of our two iMacs they happen to be logged into?
I thought the solution would be as simple as:
Plug an external hard drive into the Airport Time Capsule.
Copy our iPhoto library onto the external hard drive.
Log in as each user, open iPhoto and point to the iPhoto library on the external hard drive.
I've searched the support forums and can't find a successful example of this. Does it work? If not, is there another elegant solution?
I'd also be interested in how to back up the 'networked' iPhoto library. I plan to use iPhoto's "publish to Flickr" capability for this as it also solves how to share photos with our family's many iOS devices.
Ps. I'm new to the Mac environment so am still learning my way with OSX (be gentle please).
    Equipment
x2 iMacs (<12 months old) running the latest OSX and iPhoto software versions
2TB Airport Time Capsule (brand new) with a 1TB USB external hard drive plugged-in (not sure of the formatting).

This cannot work, unfortunately, for several reasons:
iPhoto is strictly a single user database. Only one user at a time can open it.
An iPhoto library needs to be on a locally mounted volume. It cannot be on a network share.
The file system of the drive needs to be MacOS Extended (Journaled).
Apple's only recommendation to share an iPhoto library is this:    iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
If you want to share photos and not the library, see this:   iCloud: iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ
Trying to put the iPhoto or Aperture library on a network volume, will result in library corruption or data loss:
Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library

  • IPhoto 9.6.1 is not displaying the photos in my iPhoto library.

My computer: I'm running Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C1514) on an iMac (21.5 inch, Late 2009) with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Memory is indicated as: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
The problem: Yesterday, I installed an update of iPhoto from the App Stere. My new version is 9.6.1. I opened iPhoto today, and it said that my iPhoto library needed to be updated and that permissions needed to be repaired. Then iPhoto opened to a start screen with a graphic that says "To get started with iPhoto, do any of the following: Connect a camera or memory card, drag photos into iPhoto, and choose File>Import to iPhoto library.
My photos are not showing up.
I went to File>Switch to Library... which brings up a dialogue: Which photo library do you want iPhoto to use? The default indicated is the location of my existing iPhoto library. Nevertheless, iPhoto isn't displaying any of my photos.
I should note that the hard drive on which I keep my iPhoto library is working really hard. So maybe the updating and permissions repair is still happening? A look at the hard drive's finder window indicates that it was last updated at 1:36 PM today. It's now 2:02. Can repairs and updating be still going on?
I'll wait it out, but in the meantime, if anyone can advise another course of action, I'd appreciate it.

  • My Iphoto Library won't upgrade / update after Lion install.

Ok so i updated my OS X to Lion and everything seemed fine but the Iphoto Library had an update and I installed it after this. Now i'm getting a message that my Iphoto library needs to upgrade to be able to run on this version of Iphoto. It starts to upgrade fine but never stops i just have a wheel as pointer like its thinking or trying to upgrade. It will go like this for days. I have GB's worth of photos i can't seem to get to. Help

  • Iphoto library won't import

Aperture gives an error message stating the iPhoto library needs to be upgraded and will not import. I have the 2009 version of iphoto so do not understand. This happens on my iMac Core Duo. Do not have this problem on my MacBook.

Given that the new Library works it tells us the the problem is not with Aperture, but with the iPhoto Library, which has some form of corruption.
    To fix the iPhoto Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Currently, I am very hesitant to change from Photoshop.
Aperture is not a replacement for PhOtoshop. For iPhoto, definitely.

  • Newer iPhoto library lost in migration

I migrated my iPhoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook where I had already uploaded new photo albums. After the migration, my iPhoto library needed to be rebuilt. Now my new photos from the last month are missing. Are they lost?

I migrated my iPhoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook where I had already uploaded new photo albums.
So you now have two libraries on the machine, right?
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
