IPhoto library problems in Aperture
I made the mistake of importing my iPhoto library to Aperture, about 25,000 photos. I can no longer use Aperture as a result; it always crashes, as it keeps trying to load or update the thumbnails. So I tried deleting my iPhoto library, and all I get is a spinning color wheel which causes me to force quit the app.
Can anyone help me solve this problem?!

Can't Import iPhoto Library "package" into Aperture 3
Hi there, I've recently made a backup of all my data and did a clean reinstall of Lion, so the problem is that I won't be using my iLife 11 Suite, so as for my photos I want to take advantage of my recently purchased copy of Aperture 3 but when I ever try to import my iPhoto Library Package, it won't let me, this message pops:
Invalid iPhoto Library
Importing libraries from versions earlier than iPhoto 7.1.5 is not supported. Please upgrade your iPhoto library with iPhoto 7.1.5 or later.
So, searched into some discussions and realize I had to upgrade or restore my library using iPhoto.
Is there any other way to get all my photos and videos in that package, into my aperture library?
One thing to consider is that I can right-click this package and open its contents and then I can get individual files and view everything, but since there's this function for importing all of the library, I would really love to do it this way, not individually.
NEED HELP PLEASE!Ii you are sure that all of your iPhoto images have been transferred safely, you can remove the you iPhoto Library from your system drive. But keep a backup copy of it on an external drive or thumbsdrive- sometimes you'll notice only later that some images could not be imported properly because of some corruption in the iPhoto library, and then it will be very helpful to still be able to open your old iPhoto Library.

Viewing imported hidden iPhoto Library photos in Aperture
I recently downloaded the trial version of Aperture and imported my iPhoto library. When I did that, hidden photos/events (marked as hidden in iPhoto) were not visible in Aperture. There is a "place-holder" with the original iPhoto event names for the now Aperture projects, but no photos are visible and I can't find a way to unhide them.
I have since purchased and registered Aperture, but this problem persists. Does anyone know how I can make these hidden files visible in Aperture? In the top right corner of the browser is a search box. By default it is set to show unrated or better images. If you click the triangle beside the magnifying glass you'll get a drop down. One of the choices is *Show All*. Select that . You're hidden images should appear.

... That is knowing that I have already imported all my iPhoto library but I selected the option "in their current location" from the "store files" pop-up menu.
So right now, all my pictures are referenced images in Aperture but stored in their current locations on the iPhoto folder.
I simply want to get the masters back into Aperture.
How can I do that?
Thanks a lot for you helpThere are some tutorials here
http://www.apple.com/aperture/tutorials/
one of which is specific to Aperture/iPhoto
Essentially though what you are wanting to do with your referenced master files is to
File/Consolidate Master/
Definitely worth having a read of the pro's and cons of managed vs referenced files.
RB maintains a great site with a wealth of ideas on workflows, worth having a erad of these.

Please help iPhoto library problems - faces, facebook etc.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong but iPhoto 09 has never worked very well for me. When I first started to use iPhoto 09 I went through my library to tag everyone so they came up in the faces thing. I had to add lots of missing faces because it didn't detect many. Then it merged lots of the faces together under one face name and also lost most of the ones I had tagged. I was really annoyed because this took me ages and I read on the forum that others were having problems so I decided to leave it for a while. I also had a huge problem uploading to facebook. When I made an album to upload it would start but then my internet would go off and then iPhoto just crashed. Whenever I touch any of the facebook albums iPhoto just crashes. After a couple of updates I started to think these features might be working better so I decided to sort out my library. I started to sort out the faces thing where they different people had been merged. I went through and added lots of missing faces. When I went back to check these photos the names I had added disappeared from the photo. I tried about 10 times and each time they disappeared on the same photos. Facebook was still crashing so I deleted all of my facebook albums which took ages because it kept crashing. Now it has duplicated an event and put it under a blank name and a different date. When i try to delete the photos they stay there and when I try to merge the folders that are the same, another event gets put in the folder of the same date, creating different duplicates. I don't understand what i'm doing wrong and I'm so scared of losing photos and all of the things like dates and order etc. Can anyone tell me why i'm having all of these problems? I think i need to rebuild my libary but I don't know how and i'm scared of losing photos or dates, or names or places or faces. Sorry such a long post, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
It's likely that your Library database has been damaged in all the crashing.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Iphoto library edit with Aperture
can I edit my iphoto library in Aperture 3? If I am using Aperture and viewing at my referenced iPhoto library and delete a photo from the iPhoto library, will that photo be deleted, or in the trash, when I open up iPhoto?
can I edit my iphoto library in Aperture 3?
No, but you can damage it.
If I am using Aperture and viewing at my referenced iPhoto library and delete a photo from the iPhoto library, will that photo be deleted, or in the trash, when I open up iPhoto?
Depends. If you don't delete the master then iPhoto will be unchanged. If you do then you'll trash the iPhoto Library
Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie. -
How do I set the iPhoto library as the Aperture default library?
I missed the opportunity on first opening Aperture to set the iPhoto library as the one that Aperture uses as the default, and now cannot find out how to do that after that point (it was getting late by the time I had found, installed and updated a copy of Aperture for my Mavericks based system).
How can I set the iPhoto library as the default, I don't want to have to select the iPhoto library every time I open aperture, but even knowing how to do that would be an improvement on my current knowledge!
TIAThat's what I read, but aren't they the minimum specs? Do you know what the upper specs are for using them together? Eg 3.4.5 won't work with iPhoto x.x etc?
I bought a Retail copy of Aperture 3.0.2 then downloaded the latest Maverick copy of Aperture I could as an upgrade (3.4.5) from the Apple Support site. But there was a newer version 3.5.1 which will also run on Mavericks, but is not currently available either as a retail copy or as an electronic download as Apple will only sell 3.6 now as Yosemite came out a few weeks ago. I really don't want to get Yosemite as then I won't be able to run Filemaker 11 at home for the office. And I can only upgrade Filemaker by getting a whole new set of licences for all the other computers in the office, costing about €2,000 altogether. Then I will have to buy two new Apple Mac minis costing another €1,000. And there are potential issues with other software that I will have to "up"grade to including iWork's watered down products. Wherever I look, Apple is making my life difficult. -
IPhoto Library Problem --- unable to choose the library in my external HD

Massive iPhoto Library Problems: cannot empty trash or delete photos
I did something really stupid: imported another iPhoto library into my existing one. The latter is now approx 200 GB -- and I think potentially half of it consists of duplicate photos. (I had about 30GB and then imported about 70GB and was shocked to find a new total of double what I expected!)
I have Duplicate Annihilator and I'm thinking of using it to delete the duplicates.
However, I'm unsure whether to use DA yet -- or even at all. This is because iPhoto currently will not let me: (1) delete any photos or (2) empty the (very small) iPhotos trash. If I presist and repreatedly try to empty the trash or delete a photo it finally crashes.
Should I fix the deleting/crashing problem first, before using DA? Or should I not even use DA at all but use a Time Machine backup to restore my original library and then import the other library properly (using perhaps iPhoto Library Manager)?
Basically, I just want to get rid of those tens of thousands of duplicates and reduce the librarty to what should be its genuine (non-duplicated) size of approx 100GB.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!
PS. I forgot to add that the rebarbative "Faces" is of course running and I can't figure out how to stop it trying to match 10, 000+ faces. I suppose it could be causing or adding to the problem.
PPS. For those techies who understand such things, here's the crash report (I should stress that I'm not competent and therefore not prepared to use command-line entry in Termminal to fix this):

Is what you should do.
Note that you'll need the paid version ($20) of Library Manager to merge the libraries. -
Moving current iPhoto library to the Aperture library
Hi!
When I installed Aperture, I imported the pictures from iPhoto, but I left the "original" files in the iPhoto library (that was one of the options).
Now I would like to move those originals permanently to the Aperture library, and delete the iPhoto library. I don't want to have duplicates in iPhoto, since I won't use that software anymore.
How can I do that?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
GusJust curious if your metadata path points to the iPhoto library (see my post right after yours)? Does it really think the iPhoto version is the master, or did it make the new Aperture copy the master?
If the latter, you might just put the iPhoto one on a hard disk or other storage media, as a copy of your original images/iPhoto library (then delete from hard drive). Sense of security to be able to go back to square 1 if a catastrophe occurs.

IPhoto Library Problem; Can't See Photos
Hi guys. Looking for a little help here. I typically ran a desktop and my wife ran a laptop. We kept our files for iTunes and iPhoto separate. I had an account set up on her laptop just for basic browsing, email and iWork via iCloud documents. However I really need to take her laptop on some work related travel for over a week. I set up a copy of my music and my iPhoto library on an external hard drive to use on my account and it was working great. We ended up buying her a new laptop today and set it up via her most recent Time Machine back up (which was this morning). It set up both her account and mine. We ended up deciding to sell her old laptop and used disc utility to reformat and reinstall 10.10.
As we will be moving around a bunch soon we decided to sell my desktop as well so I did one final Time Machine backup and then reformatted and reinstalled 10.10 as well. Just minutes later I went to open iPhoto on the new laptop under my account and it said it needed to be updated before I could use it. It was working fine only a few hours earlier. Unfortunately it no longer sees the photos in my iPhoto library file on my external drive. The file is still there and is still the same size. The Old Masters folder inside the library package still has the pics, but iPhoto doesn't see it. So I tried to use the back up from my desktop to restore the library, but I can't seem to get my desktop back ups to work with Time Machine on the laptop.
So I have all the pictures on my small external drive library, just iPhoto won't see it. I also have a back up on my Time Machine external drive from just this morning (so only missing the five or six pictures taken today), but I can't seem to access that on the new laptop as it was set up with my wife's Time Machine back up. Is there any way to get the library file working or to get it off my back up drive? Or do I have to just get the raw files out of the Old Masters folder?
ThanksThen I can just wipe it again before shipping it to its new owner.

Updating iPhoto library problems
I updated to the latest version of iPhoto. Of course, this required an updating of my iPhoto Library. Now I have an event that has been labeled "Recovered Photos". It contains 6,996 photos that I cannot view. They are just outlined like this: and when I open the picture I get this:
I have no idea what is contained in this "event". Solution?and
2 - what version of iPhoto and of the OS?
what has recently changed? Have you run any cleanup softwarte like MacKeeper or CleanMyMac2 (both should be avoided - they destroy iPhoto libraries)?

No acces to iphoto library after installing Aperture
hello,
i installed Aperture because it would use the same library as iphoto. everything went fine until i wanted to open iphoto again. I get the message that the library cannot be openend unless i installed the latest version of iphoto. I downloaded the latest update, but it still says the same. What can i do?There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have. -
When trying to open iphoto the following message appears:The photo library was created with an an released version of iphoto. It prompts me to upgrade to iphoto2 or iphoto4. I am running the latest version?????? This problem occurred before upgrading to tiger.
I have iPhoto 5.0.4. I downloaded some photos from a digital camera this morning. When I clicked on them, they would not open and iPhoto quit. This happened 3x. On the 4th try, a window came up saying that iPhoto needed to be upgraded which I did thinking that would solve the problem. Now all my photos have been deleted. I found a file folder with photos in it, but now it says that they are unreadable and can't be opened using the iPhoto application. How do I recapture my photos? or are they lost forever? Can I switch back to the old iPhoto program prior to the upgrade?

Using iPhoto Library in Aperture 3
Currently I have two separate photo libraries, each containing the same photos/videos in both iPhoto 11 and Aperture 3 (latest updates for both).
In order to conserve HD space is there any way I could eliminate say, the Aperture library and have it use the iPhoto library as default? Each library comprises 24K+ photos/videos; however, iPhoto is the only one which can play certain of the older videos, Aperture won't play them. There is roughly 80 to 85 GB in each library due to the amount of items. I could keep the iPhoto videos in iPhoto for reference purposes and remove same from Aperture, but that means I am still running with two libraries.
What would be likely problems if I were to remove my current Aperture library and have Aperture use the iPhoto 11 library instead? I am running low on HD space and don't wish to use an external drive to store one of the libraries; however, I do use an external drive for Time Machine backups.
I am wondering what problems I would encounter and if there would be any benefit to this scenario.
Perhaps some feedback would help me to decide. Either I can eliminate the iPhoto library or the Aperture library. Thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks.Like Aperture the 'edits' are in the database. These apps work as follows:
Import an original
Edit it. Your decisions are stored as text commands in the SQL database. When you view the file it's essentially the original with your 'edits' overlaid on it. There is no edited file without exporting - that's what lossless processing is all about.
This User Tip

has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
The Aperture export dilaogue has even more options.
To dave you the bother of always having to export iPhoto automatically generates Previews. (In Aperture you can choose to generate them or not). What's a Preview? It's a sort of 'good-enough-for-most-things version of the shot, medium quality, medium size but missing lots of metadata - designed for use in scenarios like email, uploading and using in Word Processing.
Is your plan to back up the Library to the Cloud?
