Iphoto library rebuild crashes with KERN_PROTECTION _FAILURE error

My first post - and throwing myself to the mercy of the forums for help. Appreciate your ideas and help
My problem started with installing iLife '11. As part of the instal it must rebuild the iphoto library. I got my EXCBADACCESS / KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE error. This led to me regressing back to the previous version of iPhoto (8.1.2
The good news is that I can open my iPhoto library. Everything works well, no problems at all. I have about 40,000 images plus slideshows, photobooks, -> that s a lot of meta data and I dont want to lose it
Now I need to get my iPhoto library in tip top condition - and then I can upgrade to the new version. However when I rebuild (ticking the first three tick boxes) it always crashes.
I read on a post that .MOV files can upset iPhoto. So I deleted these from my library and imported them into iMovie instead
I also had a troublesome corrupt photobook - so I deleted that
I tried rebuilding the library with iPhoto Manager - but gave up when I read that the slideshows and photobooks do not transfer across
I have the library backed up - so I can try different destructive ideas. But at 8 hours + to rebuild the library (it fails very very near the end of the process) and then about 12 hours to restore from backup then it takes a long time
The failure is always the same high level message - with slightly different detailed logs
I will paste one example below - just the first three pages - you can have more if you need
Also please note the library lives on the internal HDD of the computer
Appreciate any help

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto library was created with an unrelased version of iphoto please quit and ugrade library by opening it in iphoto 2 or iphoto 4

my iphoto 8.1.2  operating system 10.6.8  can't open iphoto...error message says  IPHOTO LIBRARY WAS CREATED WITH AN UNRELEASED VERSION OF IPHOTO. PLEASE QUIT AND UPGRADE IPHOTO LIBRARY BY OPENING IT IN IPHOTO 2 OR IPHOTO 4?

Restore from your back up is the simple solution.
    Failing that:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto library was created with a trial version, open version 2 or 4.....

hi, i apparently have an older version of iphoto that thinks its the "guardian" to all of my iphoto pics. i do have iphoto six, but when i try to open it, it says that the iphoto library was created with a trial version of iphoto, and that i should open version 2 or 4 to use that library. i can find no way to open version 6, nor can i find version 2 or 4. is it possible that i accidentally deleted these? and how can i get them back, so i can upgrade to version 6? thanks

I am having almost the same problem! I am not sure what happened to trigger this, but one day, I tried to open iPhoto, and it said that "This library was created with an unreleased version of iPhoto. Please open library with iPhoto 2 or 4." I have been runing iPhoto 5 for the past year!
I jsut bought iPhoto 6 today, hoping that if I installed the latest version, it would fix all of the issues. Well, it didn't! I can't even hold down shift+option when launching the application...once the library is selected, i get the same error message as before.
Can anyone help me PLEASE!!! i'm going to Maui next week, and need to get all of the photos off my camera before i go!

  • I'm using a Mac. When I tried to open my iPhoto library in Elements I get the error message "cannot complete request PE doesn't recognize this type of file"?

I use a Mac. When I try to open my iPhoto Library in Elements I get the error message "cannot complete request, PE does not recognize this type of file." The import option only allows me import a "frame from Video"?

You can't use iPhoto that way.  Poking around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto is just begging for trouble, the fastest way to corrupt your library and lose all your images.
You have two choices with iphoto:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from iphoto. Save, never save as, and don't change the name or format and iphoto will remember your last saved edits and the original, although you have to lose the edited version to revert to the original. This doesn't work with raw files.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use File>Open in PSE and then you can make all the changes to name and format that you want. Then import the saved edited version to iphoto as a new file.

  • ITunes won't connect to iTunes Store with my Apple ID and repeatedly crashes with "An unknown error occurred (-50)."

I've been unable to use iTunes for over 3 weeks now.
Initially, it would prompt me to Sign In with my Apple ID and password each time it tried to start, and when I clicked Sign In, it'd respond with variations of:
"Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance."
        or
        De-authorize/Authorize.
Frustrated, I'd click Cancel, and it'd crash with:
        "An unknown error occurred (-1008)."
        or
        "An unknown error occurred (-50)."
More recently, I don't even get the Sign In prompt any more. iTunes now just crashes immediately with unknown error (-50) as soon as it tries to start.
It is clear that this issue has more to do with the Apple ID than with iTunes specifically, because some of the apps I purchased directly from the App Store (OmniFocus, Fantastical and Forismatic) now prompt me to Sign In with my Apple ID and password each time they try to start, and they never did before. And when I try to sign, they respond with the error:
"Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance."
Apparently, this is an issue a whole lot of people are experiencing, judging by the long list of Google search returns on the subject; but I'm yet to find a definitive, "official" Apple solution to the problem.
My Apple ID is the same as it's always been.
If anyone knows what's really causing this and/or can offer a fix, please H-E-E-E-L-P? I'll even pay to make it go away. I abandoned Windows after 26 years, only to discover that no platform is spared the blackhole of unknown errors.

  • IPad Air crashes with low memory error in Google Translate Web Site

My new iPad Air crashes with low memory error every time I try to use my Phrasebook in Google Translate Web site. This is rather disapointing considering that my old Nexus 10, that iPad Air is supposed to replace, works flawlessly in Google Translate Web site. Perhaps this has to do with the rather limited RAM (1GB) that iPad Air is equippoed with.
I would appreciate any recommendation, Thanks in advance.

  • Lost photos after iPhoto library rebuild - what happened?

After noticing that there were albums entitled Recovered photos in my iPhoto library, I deleted those albums. As expected, i got a message that i was not really deleting the originals, just getting rid of such albums. There were about 5 of those "recovered albums": one contained about 30 photos; three had zero and another had over 1000 photos. Subsequent to that, thinking of making this library totally clean, I decided to do a "libraty rebuild" using the option-command rebuild procedure of iphoto. I checked all the options presented for that procedure. To my surprise, when the process was finished I had less events, and less photos. A careful visual check of the display pane of events and photos confirmed that i had lost actual photos. I tried to reclaim those lost photos with another rebuild -- this time using iphoto library manager, but without success. What happened? Is there any way to reclaim those lost photos?
I do have a backup, but would prefer to correct the problem in the original library to avoid having to assemble and clean up duplicates that i had before.
I'm using the newest version of iPhoto: 8.1 and OS X 10.5.8 on a MacBook 2.4 Ghz - 2Gb Ram - 250 GB HD, 42 GB available. My iPhoto library has over 12000 photos

Why these things happen is always difficult to answer. My experience with iPhoto is using it since v1 on with a single library that's upgraded each new versions and migrated from G4 iMac to G5 iMac to Intel iMac and then a second Intel iMac. I load photos in, my wife does and my 12 year old does too.
    And never had a problem.
The database gets corrupted when the app is interrupted when writing to it. The usual causes of this include a crash, a force quit or a lost connection to the Library on an external disk. More rarely minor disk or directory damage might be a cause.
I wondered when I read your report
Subsequent to that, thinking of making this library totally clean, I decided to do a "libraty rebuild" using the option-command rebuild procedure of iphoto. I checked all the options presented for that procedure.
The options presented for that procedure include various items that require the app to read the database file plus this one
Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
+I Wonder+ - I stress, I wonder, no more - if reading to rebuild various thumbnails from a file that is being vacuumed +while at the same time+ is being replaced by a backup is what caused the issue.
If it is, then the Rebuild from Back Up option should be sandboxed and not possible while the other events are going on.
    But that's just a guess.
    Regards

  • IPhoto v9.5 crashes with Mavericks

I updated to Mavericks yesterday on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro and have updated to iPhoto v9.5 today.  When i opened iPhoto initially, it told me i needed to upgrade the library to work with the new version of iPhoto.  I chose the option to upgrade and left it to get on with it.  However, iPhoto then crashed before the library opened.  Now whenever i try to launch iPhoto, it crashes after a minute or two and tells me that iPhoto quit unexpectedly.

  • Aperture 3.6 and iPhoto 9.6 crashes with nikon .nef files (raw format)

I've got a problem with raw files support for my Nikon D700 camera. Even though this camera is listed here: https://www.apple.com/pl/aperture/specs/raw.html both Aperture and iPhoto see .nef files as a white image. If I try to edit one, both apps crash.
How can I get a raw files support in these applications?
I have updated os, apps and even tried to remove and reinstall raw camera bundle as it was described here RAW files suddenly show up as "not supported" (Aperture 3.5.1, OS X 10.10). No luck.
My OSX is installed on SSD, while iPhoto library is on the secondary HDD drive.

Norbert, I cannot find the post you are referring to.
Have you had the problem with Aperture 3.6? This is surprising, since the Aperture 3.6 released is supposed to fix this bug, see the release Notes: Aperture 3.6 Release notes
    Aperture 3.6 Update
Adds compatibility with OS X Yosemite.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture performance to slow down while browsing through images with onscreen proofing enabled.
Fixes an issue where Aperture could become unresponsive in rare cases when adding to a shared photo stream.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture to unexpectedly quit when using the Write IPTC Metadata to Originals feature.
Aperture no longer displays the alert, “This library has been opened with a newer version of Aperture.” when using Library First Aid with libraries previously opened in iPhoto.
Do you remember, which of the presets in Library/Application Support actually is causing the problem, since deleting all of them is causing a lot of work to restore the custom settings? It would be great to know the specific file.

  • RAW thumbnails missing after iPhoto library rebuild

iPhoto would not open for me shortly after upgrading to Lion. I rebuilt the library using command + option with all checkboxes checked. All JPEG thumbnails were present, but all RAW thumbnails just showed a black box with a dashed line. When I double click the missing thumbnail, the image does appear in iPhoto.
I then rebuilt the library a second time, but the problem is the same. The iPhoto library is in the normal place on the startup drive.
RAW photos were generated with a Canon Digital Rebel and Canon 40D cameras. I do have Aperture on the system as well.

As I say, I've seen it take 4 times to work.
    Other than that:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Hung the iPhoto library rebuild

Intermittently, iPhoto synchronizes all my events to my iPhone 4 or iPad 2 in random order. The events are not in alphabetical order (like I have the on the computer), or apparently even time-ordered, expect that the most recently created event does seem to appear at the very bottom of the list. This makes finding the events I want  on the phone/pad agonizing, since there are many events and many thousands of photos. To make matters worse, when I plug the device into the computer, and look at the synchronization details in iTunes, the list of events appears random there too. Albums and Faces are always in order. I've deleted all photos from the device, then re-synced. That seemed to help once and failed about 9 times. Occasionally the problem seems to fix itself for a while. Right now it's fine on my iPhone and messed up on my iPad. Suspecting library corruption, I tried to rebuild the iPhoto Library after making a backup. It gets to 98% then hangs forever when I ask for the first option (rebuild) with or without other options selected. If I ask for the rebuild from automated backups option, it gets to "Rebuilding Library: 14625 Versions restored" then hangs forever. If I only ask it to rebuild thumbnails (either of the 2 options) it has no trouble.
I'm stumped. Anyone have experience with this issue???
    --Scott

I've got the same problem with iPhoto. Hangs at 69% when rebuild; hangs at a large number of items when rebuilding from backup. If I try to rebuild from backup, wait for the hang, and then force quit, the library is corrupted and iPhoto opens up with nothing. I have to use Time Machine to rebuild.

    See
“Generic WebLogic Server Installer generates a Crash immediately after opening GUI on ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 Library (Doc ID 1570688.1)” which states that
“ This is an issue with AVX support appearing on newer hardware. Default glibc is incompatible with it. This problem happens due to a Red Hat Bug: Segmentation fault in dynamic loader on AVX enabled CPU “
    Solution:
    1. Set the following Environment Property on your active Shell.
      - open a bash terminal and type in:
    $ export LD_BIND_NOW=1
    2. Re-Run the installer as bellow example.
      $JAVA_HOME/bin ./java -jar wls1036_generic.jar

  • Recovering iphoto library: rebuilding database doesn't work

My iphoto-library runs on an external HDD (using a MBP 256 SSD). It contains 38.000 photos, lots of albums and projects (photo albums) and a week ago it crashed. I accidentally removed the hdd while using iphoto. This happened to me before and with a simple recovery (update library. 'Werk bij' in Dutch. I work with a Dutch version) it was back.
But now my library is completely gone. I tried recovering my library by using 'option+command'. It recovered my photos, but not my settings. See the screen print. No albums and projects...
My masters, previews and projects (photo albums) are all there (in finder).
Does anybody have a solution for my problem? How do I recover my setting/iphoto library?
    Thanks in advance.

    Have you tried Repair Disk?
Connect the external drive and open Disk Utility from your main drive. (Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility)
In DU, select the external drive, then First Aid and click Repair Disk.
    Good luck.
