IPhoto on MBA w/Lion see no images on iPhone 4

iPhone 4 w/IOS 5 connected to MacBook Air mid 2011 via USB cable. The iPhoto app sees the iPhone in its device list however no images are listed when it is selected. The iPhone 4 has several images listed in its Photo app. If I do the same thing with my iPad 2 w/IOS 5 the MBA iPhoto app sees all its images.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have discovered that iPhoto is showing the iPhone Camera Roll (which was empty). If I add an image to that album it is visible via iPhoto. Does anyway exist to have iPhoto see the iPhone Photo Library?

I'm on a Macbook Pro and all of my software is up-to-date.
The photos and events, etc. appear to be present in my photo library, but I cannot see the actual images--only an outlined placeholder.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. This can take 3 or 4 goes to work.

IPhoto won't "see" some images on iPhone

Strangely and all of a sudden (or at least I think) iPhoto detects that I have images on my iPhone but won't let me view them. When I right click all the fields are greyed out too. Instead it just shows dotted lines around them. If I open image capture - it detects jpegs but won't view them. If I use image capture to download the images to my desktop, the files are perfectly normal and I can then then drag and drop them into iPhoto which again, will treat them as normal as usual.
The only common factor with these files is that they are taken with hipstamatic or modified with swankolab; some are also wallpapers from 10,000 wallpapers app. I don't have this problem with photos taken with the camera.

I went to the hipstamatic site and discovered that its a problem affecting quite a few people. Customers apparently seem to be caught between Hipstamatic and Apple - both passing the buck onto the other to the detriment of customers:

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
1. Right click images you want to share.
2. Select Export version.
3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
See how you go.

When working in my photo album in iphoto my photos are replaced with a grey box and an !. I can't see the image on the page.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

IPhoto 6 doesn't recongnize my RAW images

I have a Canon 20D and it worked fine with iPhoto 5, but now that I upgraded to iPhoto 6, when it attempts to import, it seems to be working, and then lists all of the RAW images and won't open then, can't read them. I tried converting them to DNG's too and it won't open them either. The finder can see the images, but iPhoto doesn't work at all.
The Beta of Adobe Lightbox does work fine, but I like to store my images in iPhoto for ease. What is going on? Anywyone have any idea?

Your JPEG is like a Photoshop sidecar. Your original should be there if reverted. Hope it helps.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Generally I shoot photos in RAW, however I shot some images using my D100 in Large fine format. I am able to view the images on my camera but I am unable to see the images in Lightroom. How do I resolve this problem?

I am having difficulty viewing large fine J-peg files (Nikon D100) in Lightroom. I can see the images on my camera but I do not see the images after I have imported the images from my card reader. What is the best way to trouble shoot this? I shot RAW images a few days earlier I didn't have any problems.

1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?

Will iphoto 08 work in lion?

cant get my photos to import from a TM backup to a new machine running lion. they worked fine with the iphoto 08 (7.1.5 version) on my old machine. can i just install iphoto 08 and run that on the lion OS on the new machine?
i tried rebuilding and a lot of other things. i believe i have a corrupt iphoto library, but everything worked fine for me right before i backed it all up to TM.

I'm have iPhoto '08 (7.1.5) and it appears to run fine under Lion. At least it starts up, lets me see photos, plays slideshows, etc. I use Aperture, not iPhoto, these days so I have not imported anything into iPhoto since moving to Lion but I have some older slideshows in iPhoto so I keep it around.

Selling my MBA with Lion/license?

I bought Lion last week for my MBA 2010 and now I am planning to buy the new, faster MBA 2011. As far as I know I have to uninstall Lion from the old machine in order to sell it; otherwise the new buyer will have to use my apple ID to keep the Lion I bought.
The question is: Once I get my new MBA with Lion pre-installed I basically lost the $30 I spent on Lion for my old MBA. Is there any reimbursement in these cases from apple or something like that?

Hi thanks for replies. How does iTunes know that I am not purchasing a new licence, but have deleted it from another machine? I don't want to get charged again for another copy.

Cant see any images in my emails anymore (since upgraded to 3)

i was trying to send myself a pic so i could attach it to a contact. i tried 2 ways (embed and attach).
i can't see the image all i get is an icon for winmail.dat

What is the source of the picture you are trying to send (iPhoto, desktop or other picture folder)?
What format is the original picture (JPG, PNG,etc.)?
It really should be as simple as dragging a picture (assuming it is a picture format) into the mail application and sending it to your email account.
I just did it to confirm the procedure. Opened it on my iPhone.
So, hopefully the problem is with the format of the original picture you are trying to send.
That is another matter.
