Ipod classic eq distortion

I just bought the Ipod classic 160gb and when I adjusted the equalizer to e.g. rock hiphop r&b , the sound was just distorted. I can tell the bass is really distorted. You know if I turn off the equalizer to fix the problem , the sound is not so good. In addition , compared to Iphone5 when I adjusted the eq , the sound was so good , not distorted at all. So I need to know why apple made such equalizers in the ipod classic. If there's no way to fix this , Apple should do something to take responsibility for their costumers. I really cant' stand the sound. Thank you.

I recently bought a 30gb ipod video. Upgraded to
firmware 1.1.2. Loaded my music and started
listening. Many of the songs sound flat w/o any EQ
settings, so I turned the EQ on, and the bass
distorts like crazy. Sounds like crap.
So I brought it to the apple store, the "genius"
agreed with me and exchanged my ipod for a new one.
Same f'ing thing!!! Songs distort with EQ on.
Anyone else experiencing this problem? My freakin
$30 Panasonic CD/mp3 player sounds better than this
$300 piece of junk.
I've tried it with the stock earbuds, and also with
some Sony headphones, and I get the same results.
And I've tried music I've downloaded, music I've
ripped from CDs, and music I've purchased from
iTunes. Some songs disort (even some I bought from
iTunes), and some don't. What's a guy to do?
I'm in the same boat.
I bought a new ipod and it distorts when the eq it activated.I thought it might have been the inferior ear buds so i bought a set of shure E4s.Still Getting the same results. Then I updated the ipod.It still distorts when the eq is turned on.Even at low levels. So i tested the same musicon my laptop through my Pioneer Djm600 mixer with my e4s....They rocked alot louder with the bass setting on the eq turned up.Next I ran the music on my ipod through
My M-Audio bx8 Studio Monitors ....Still got the same distortion. This only happens with the eq turned on.
I don't know what to do now.....Can anyone tell me if apple is at least admitting to the probem....if its going to get fixed with new firmware....The problems there and I'm glad that its not just me.

  • 160 GB IPod Classic : Sound Distortion?

Recently, I purchased a 160 GB IPod Classic from Wal-Mart. Once I got home and synched my notoriously large music library onto it, I immediately noticed a huge difference in the sound quality.  The kicks and snares were ugly, and the bass was even more disgusting! All of my favorite songs were so distorted.  At first I assumed it was the headphones, so I tested them out on my ''ex'' 8GB IPod Touch to compare - and everything was perfectly fine (and better).
I searched my issue online and seen many buyers like me having the same exact problem, and most of them purchased their IPods in 2009-2010!  How can a problem like this go unsolved for so long? Why wouldn't Apple change/fix the software to be up with the newer generation's standards if they are still for sale today? There has to be someway this could be fixed.
So all I want to know is if I really wasted $249 on a device so worthless? I only bought this product for the 160 GB of memory since I couldn't fit all of my music on my IPod Touch,  and now I feel robbed.

Music post 2008 ish is recorded into an MP3 file at higher volumes than prior to that era.
Modern DAC (digital to analogue converter) can deal with this increase in volume (earlier albums, particularly those ripped from 1980's CDs) will sound quieter.
Unfortunately the DAC in the ipod classic hasn't been updated from one of the early versions.
What I've done for some recent purchases, is run them through this volume levelling software:
    http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php
There is an equivalent version for the Mac.  They are identical in operation, and one version is no better than the other.
I reduce the volume by about 10% on a whole album, even if it's only 2 or three tracks that are distorting.
Remember to keep a copy of your original files for safety.
The quality of the music does not degrade, and I'm really fussy and have $300 senheiser IE80s.  It's just the volume that is reduced so it doesn't upset the iPod classic DAC.
However, there's no getting away from it, that this is a REAL PAIN, and there should be NO EXCUSE for apple selling such an inadequate product.  It shouldn't be too long before the iPod touch or Nano is in the 200Gb region.  After all, they can fit 64Gb on a Micro SD card whose outer casing is smaller than my small fingernail, what are Apple waiting for?

  • IPod Classic USB Distortion

I've had my iPod about a couple of years now and has worked great until now where the music is heavily distorted.
Listening to the music with the iPod plugged into my PC via the USB connector sounds fine but when I play it back via my hifi's USB port it is heavily distorted. Luckily my son has the same iPod and his plays distorted free.
The iPod is up-to-date, tried another cable and same issue, tried another docking unit and same again. I did google for help and checked the Get Info for the tracks and that was at '0' for volume level. Now I'm concerned it could be faulty as I play it for hours every day unless there is something else to try?
    Thanks

Not sure how you edit the first post but an update to say I tried another docking station that played distorted free which I guess rules out the first HiFi being the problem, another iPod playing back fine in the HiFis USB port rules out the HiFi being defective since it also plays back other audio sources great. Changing cables didn't work.
I can't go as far as to complain about the iPod and get it serviced since I can't pin down any issue - I'm totally mystified.

  • Ipod classic sudden sound distortion from dock connector only

I have an ipod classic 160gb 7th generation.  When I docked it one day the sound was very distorted and unplayable.  This happens in different docking stations yet they play with other ipods.  I can still sync and charge (through some but not all chargers) and can play through headphones.
I have reset, restored, turned the EQ off and still no change.  Any help /advice?  not under warranty
    thx

    Thanks for your reply
Do you mean take it to a physical store?  The closest one I have is just over an hours drive away, if they'll look at it for me though I guess it's worth it.
    Thanks

  • Ipod classic and some distorted/clipped playback

After spending many years with my 3G ipod I got a new 80GB ipod classic (thanks to my wife) but am having a problem with playback on 1.1/1.1.1. It seems that some songs are playing back exceptionally loud causing the output to be clipped/distorted.
Playback is through the digital connector and not the headphone output. This is through a iTrip auto scan modulator.
On the 1.0 firmware I found a work around. By going into the Volume Level while not connected and then connect I could "trick" the output on the digital out to adjust. Now this work around seems to be disabled and I cannot figure out how to fix it.
I checked some of the individual sounds in iTunes to make sure they were not bumped up in volume level and they are not.
    Any thoughts?

I had the same problems, and I found that using the AACgain program with iGain at the front end solved the problem. However, this does not work on songs bought from iTunes as they are protected. Spoken to iTunes about it, but they were no help. Can't understand why they don't run a gain adjuster on songs before they offer them for download. Won't be buying from iTunes anymore.

  • IPod Classic 6th Gen - Distorted sound :-(

Hey folks, my friends iPod Classic 80gb 6th Generation iPod has a crappy distorted sound when tunes are played from it.
He sent it away to get fixed thinking it would be the headphone jack that was the problem - they got back to him and said that it was the Logic board at fault, and charged over £79.99 +VAT for this repair.
When it came back, all seemed to work okay, except a very short battery life.
A week later, the iPod froze with no backlight (the menu was still visible but not reacting to any button presses)
Nothing happened when the charger was plugged in, so we held the Menu Button + the Select button, and it rebooted successfully however the orginal problem came back of distorted sound....:-(
Very unhappy as £79.99 was a lot to pay for it be broken again so soon.
Can anyone shed any light onto why this may of happened?
Was he right by saying it was the logic board at fault?
    Cheers
    James

I haD the same issue, and was thoroughly ticked off until doing some research and then trying couple things.
I was able to change the volume limit, that WAS set at half.  I adjusted it to max volume, set a lock passcode, and away I drove.
Then, upon hitting "play", I began to get a little ticked off.  I realized after a few minutes, I couldn't hear anything playing.
It was so quiet- and I-95 is noisy, with me regretting buying another Apple product, after is wrote not to.
So- after reading through a couple of these threads, I just adjusted the volume limit, and VOILA!
    It reverted to 50%.
So, I did a total wipe, factory-reset it as new iPod.  I checked setting=>volume limit and it was at the 50% point again. First thing that I did was go to the last selection under settings menu, "reset settings" and noted it doesn't delete sync days, solely sys settings.
I adjusted the volume limit to 100% immediately afterwards, set a new passcode and then.....
    Hit play.
It worked. Plays just as loud as my original 3rd Gen iTouch.
So Dylan1219, maybe try that?  It's so simple, I am shocked that's how I fixed it.  It had been set- and always snapped back to the 50% mark.
So, MAYBE that could solve the problem..?  I have hearing loss from rock & roll and concerts, etc...so, thankfully this isn't a bunk product.  Just had a bunk setting.
It has stayed at Max level for hours now, and can state it solved it for me.
I would hypothesize, all iPod classics are made the same, except for the "options"  of storage and color.  Maybe a small "governor" or a piece of extra firmware is added after the fact, or only "every 9th iPod" who knows for sure...?

  • Bass distortion Ipod classic

    Hi
any suggestions with regards to distorted bass on some music on my IPod classic.
Have tried importing at 192kbps and the Apple loss less recorder
    Have also used MP3gain
    equaliser settings on and off
and resetting the equaliser on iTunes
have also reset to factory state and installed up to date software
    All to no avail
    Any help would be great
    Merry Xmas

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually: How to use multiple iPods with one computer

  • Distortion problems with new iPod Classic

    Hello:
I recently purchased a 160GB iPod Classic to replace a 2-year-old 60GB iPod. I had no problems updating the new one; about a zillion tracks went in very smoothly in about a half-hour. But I have noticed a couple of problems:
First, I always listen to my iPod at work on a Klipsch dock, and even though I keep it set at a fairly low volume (all of the content is classical music), I'm getting crackling and distortion in random spots in music. It doesn't seem to matter if the music was downloaded from iTunes or imported from a CD. It's definitely not the dock, because I tried the old iPod on it and it worked as well as it always did.
Second, when I select a playlist and start playback, I notice that more often than not, the first second or two of music is cut off. I have to press the back arrow on the iPod, and then playback is correct.
That is a minor annoyance, but the the distortion problem is far more serious. I never had either problem on the old iPod, and I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems with the iPod Classic. I'd HATE to think I'd have to trash 40GB of music and start all over importing CDs.
Thanks for any input you can give me.

thanks for the suggestion but it did not work.
The iPod came up asking for the password (WEP key) and i entered it. It showed connected with the router but Safari does not work and when i check the DHCP entries in see the following
    IP: 169.254.202.45
    Sub: 255.255.0.0
This means that the connection was made but the router DHCP server did not assign an IP address to the iPod.
This exact problem i have encoutered so far in my office, a cofeeshop and a car dealership. In all cases the wirelles was based on an older linksys router and except in the case of my office the other two were unsecured networks.
I believe it has something to do with the firmware on those linksys routers causing a problem specificaly to iPods and i would guess iPhones too since they have the same OS.
I'm open to any suggestions but i've tried all the ones posted in this and other forums so far with no luck.
When i assign a static IP, the iPod again connects, the router log indicates outgoing traffic from that IP but there is no incomming traffic.

  • My iPod Classic (120Gb) reboots/crashes/freezes/resets every 15 minutes!

Hi and thanks for checking out my post.
About a year ago, I got an iPod classic (120 gigabyte) for my birthday. It served me well for about 7 months, until the headphone jack got busted and only played the Left channel of every song. So I got a replacement.
My new unit had been serving me for quite some time, until I updated my iPod firmware about a month ago (2.0.1)
Ever since, it has been rebooting to the apple logo screen (or the distorted black/blue/cyan/white variant) every couple of songs. after that, I have to press the menu and select for 6 seconds to get it to reboot faster (about 1 minute). Otherwise, it will take up to 3 minutes! I also have the problem with random song skipping. (doesn't happen to the same songs, it's very random)
I've had the same music loaded on to this iPod as my last one, so it shouldn't be my library causing problems.
I have read some 'solutions' telling me to uninstall iTunes 9 and reverting to iTunes 8. I have also read that by doing so, I won't be able to open my iTunes library. I don't want to lose my library just to get my iPod working again. I have read someone suggesting to defragment my iPod. I've read others saying NOT to defragment it.
    My questions are:
    - if a firmware update is released, will it fix my problems?
    - if it doesn't fix them, will I get a refund or a replacement? (although my warranty time has passed recently)
    - most importantly: how can I prevent my iPod classic 120gb from rebooting randomly?!
Also, the seed for the 'shuffle songs' seems to be the same again whenever my iPod crashes, resulting in the exact same playlist when I choose Shuffle Songs after it has rebooted. when I choose Shuffle songs again after that, it plays an identical playlist to the second one after another reboot. (If you get what I'm saying here)
It does work though when I have the shuffle songs setting on.
Another thing that might be of interest. When I first got the replacement iPod, and plugged it into my laptop, it showed lack of battery life, and it wasn't charging, so I had to charge it directly from the power supply first. (I don't see how this is relevant though)
I am also aware of the other topics about this phenomenon.
The lack of response from Apple, and lack of solutions has made me compile this post.
    Thank you for your time.

I have this very same problem. However, when I watch a film or music video it plays pretty much to the end.......
I have also reset my iPod and no difference. ITunes / Apple say it is a problem and to keep resetting my iPod which is ridiculous as this takes an age to reformat every album and film and game I have for the thing.
At first I thought it was the battery but after watching a 3 hour film (The Great Escape - good film) it shows no sign of locking up at all.
I'm at a loss as the iPod is about full and is aways connected to the car.
Cheers for any help I may be able to get........

  • Ipod Classic A/V Component Cable problem

    Hi guys,
I'm having trouble with my brand new, latest generation, Ipod Classic 160GB with tv out A/V component cable.
When I plug it on my tv I get a vertical split image with some color distortion. Sound is ok, though.
Funny part is that I also own a 2nd generation ipod touch and the cable work fine with it.
Please help me out! I've searched the entire internet and couldn't find nothing regarding this problem yet

This is probably a long shot but:
Are you getting both channels of sound? I know this sounds ludicrous, but a friend of mine had a third-party cable and it seems the colour coded sleeves - red, white and yellow - on the AV plugs were mixed up so that video was coming through one of the audio plugs. The upshot was that he got one channel of audio and video sash until he tried different combinations of plugging the cables into the ports.

  • Please Help Me..!! Ipod Classic 120gb

    Hello Friends Please Help Me...
I Just Bought an IPod Classic 120gb In Second hand. While Buy The Condition Was Good. Once I Connect In My Laptop It Ask Me  To Restore. I Restored Successfully Then I Load Some Songs But It Showing In Others Not In My Music (It Shows No music). Another Problem Is Many Times Its Reset Automatically .

I am sorry to hear that your experience has been so bad with your iPod. As I said, there are some annoyances - some people may be more bothered by them than others. And of course, losing ones music (more than once) is a major deal.
One note concerning one of your complaints - the low volume. Since you mentioned you paid Euros, I would have to guess that it was purchased in the EU. Apple was sued over the maximum volume several years ago by the French government which ultimately resulted in the EU regulating maximum volume in all MP3 players. Units purchased in the US do not suffer from this issue (as my ringing ears can attest to on more than one occasion). And I actually reduce the gain on all of my albums to reduce the distortion that current record producers introduce into the music with over-compression.
The one issue I wholeheartedly agree with you on is the pausing. Though to me it is nothing more than an annoyance (and it happens only rarely), I can see how it would REALLY bother someone. As far as other players are concerned, I've had issues with those as well - a SanDisk device that suddenly decided to show duplicates of all of my songs. Of course, the SanDisk did not cost nearly as much as my iPod.
Are iPods either the best or the worst of the MP3 players on the market. I can't say as I have not done the research. I agree though, that there is plenty of room for improvement.

  • Ipod sound is distorted when put in an ihome.

Today, I placed my iPod into my iHome, and the sound came out crackly and distorted. I don't know what to do, my warranty is up.
When I first got my iPod Classic in 2008, this happened, and it was replaced, but my warranty is up.

  • Trouble downloading jpegs to iPod Classic

I am having trouble downloading jpb images to my iPod classic, the pictures download after being optimised by iTunes but are unviewable (colours are changed, image distorted). Any help would be appreciated. I read Apple's downloading instructions but no luck with this problem.

  • IPod Classic 160GB: Headphone Jack

Only the left channel works in all earphones and headphones I use. At first I thought it was the headphones, so I got the warranty on those, but then I found out it was the iPod. Is this under warranty? Is there anyway to fix this myself? Do I have to set up an appointment at the Genius Bar?

I'm not sure if this is the cause of your problem, but iPod Classics have been known to have a faulty audio jack. This happened to mine a couple years back. The audio started to be a bit distorted when I have headphones in but would be better if I jiggled the audio plug around (i.e. when the audio plug was in certain positions the sound went back to normal).
If this is the case, Apple can repair it but the cost is pretty substancial. It is something you can fix on your own (after ordering a few parts online) or find a local shop that does electronic repairs for a fraction of the cost.
