IPod Fifth Gen. disk use

Ok, I have a iPod fifth generation. Which is 30GB. It's not the new 30GB though. I updated my iTunes and iPod to the latest software. (iTunes 7 and iPod version 1.2.) I checked the box that said enable disk use, but it's not showing up on my WindowsXp home edition SP2. I go to My Computer and I don't see the iPod. I think usually does that. Does it on other PC's? I only enabled my iPod for disk use once and I don't remember. I had software verison 6.0.5 when I enabled for disk use and it worked.

If it is missing from My Computer check this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711

  • Can the iPod (5th Gen) be used as an external hard drive? (w/ no syncing)

    Dear Forum:
Can the Ipod (5th Gen) be used as an external hard drive where I can manually (without syncing) transfer photos to the drive? My goal is to be able to transfer images from my MacBook (OS 10.4.11) to the Ipod and then erase some of the pics on my MacBook to save space; this will be something I'd doing when I'm traveling--I don't want to be carrying my desktop external hard drive with me.
Naturally I don't want to sync the photos onto the Ipod because I'll be erasing photos to save space. By the way, I use Aperture 2 (with latest firmware) if it helps to know.
Ideally, is there a way I can "see" the Ipod as an external hard drive, so I can move files onto it?
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Use video and music files on ipad from iPod fifth gen

I've got an old iPod fifth generation video, with lots of music and video etc. can I use it as an external device to plug into my ipad 2? Is there a cable or docking station that would allow me to do this.... It would give me lots more space and capacity whilst on the move.

    No.

  • IPod Fifth Gen Widescreen Problem

I bought several movies from itunes including Resident Evil Extinction and Degeneration, The Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and Pirates of the Caribean Curse of the Black Pearl. They all play back on my Fifth Gen ipod video in widescreen. I would prefer to use it fullscreen, so any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. Have tried _all_ of the suggestions including 4 of the "R"s - the Restore option is not possible, two different USB cables, 3 different computers (2 with latest iTunes update, 1 with previous). Still the same result - nothing! The ipod works fine apart from the connection issue. When attached to the computer "Do no disconnect" is displayed, but the ipod does not appear anywhere on the computer and iTunes does not start - even when I double click the icon.

  • IPod touch and disk use

    Hi,
I am planning to buy an 32 Gig iPod touch. Does anybody know if the option "Enable disk use", which is available for instance for a 5th gen iPod, is available also for 32 gig Touch? I've read the User Guide and I didn't find anything about it.
    Thx.

You can enable disk use. However it's not like the the original thought when people say "disk use". I can use my iPod touch (8GB 1st Gen) as a wireless flash drive with thanks to the App Store and an app called Air Sharing. There are a number of apps like this in the App Store that allow over-the-air sharing of files from computer to the iPod via a network. In other words, your iPod and computer will have to have wireless capabilities and must be on the same network. Then connect the computer to your iPod by connecting to its IP address given by iPod in the Settings > Wifi area. So technically yes you can enable disk use, but it might cost you for the app, and you wouldn't be able to use it as a flash drive that you can take to school and plug it in.

  • ITunes no longer recognizes iPod after "Enable Disk Use"

I enabled the disk use on my iPod and now iTunes won't recognize it, meaning it doesn't appear in the source window and I can't disable the disk use and sync. The iPod only appears in the device manager as a USB storage device, but not in My Computer; the iPod flashes Do Not Disconnect. I've tried the 5 rs. Any advice/wisdom, anyone? Thanks.

In Device Manager, change the drive letter of the device, use M.

  • Saving ipod first gen files using itunes

My first gen iPod nano has some very precious podcasts on it. Had another attempt this morning after connecting the iPod to the computer to get these files from iTunes backed up into a folder on my iMac. Can anyone help? I'm really stumped and have been online to manuals....right before me in the iTunes window are these files -- not saved to the computer.
The iPod  first gen manual doesn't cover it, even in 'using your iPod as an external drive'. Yes, it's latest version of iTunes, yes, computer is authorized, and 'manually' move files from iPod is selected.
Under iTunes menu have tried file > library > export playlist.
Files ended up as text first try, next, when appending xml, they ended up as code in Dreamweaver, a program for making web pages. Did Dreamweaver boot without being asked? Yes.  Then tried appending M3U  and find file doesn’t work in anything. Not VLC nor Windows Media Player, nor Real Player converter  finally saw in Wikipedia that M3U is a plain text file.
Have needed to back up these files for years!  Will greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Do you have your iPod Classic set up for manual management?  In other words is the Manually manage music and videos option enabled from your iPod's Summary tab in iTunes?

  • Games won't copy ipod fifth gen, need help!

I have an ipod fith gen 05 I recently downloaded sonic and naval battle and I can't seem to figure out how to get them on my ipod! I looked around the forum and some people have the same problem, but no one really figured out what to do! Please help!

    1. Make sure iTunes is set to show your games. (Click "Edit>Preferences..." and check the "Applications" box.) Then, make sure that you actually downloaded them.
    2. Plug in your iPod and click on it in the left pane.
    3. Make sure your iPod is updated to the latest firmware. (There's a button to do this in iTunes.)
    4. Click the "Games" tab on the right, and check the "All games" box.
    5. Sync your iPod.
    6. If it tells you to authorize, go to the menu bar and click "Store>Authorize Computer..." and type in your iTunes login and password.

  • Cannot Turn iPod off of Disk Use(!)

I have tried everything to get my iPod off of the disk function, so that when I plug it in it will start iTunes automatically. I have checked the right options under the iPod tab in iTunes, but it still does not change. I haave even used iPod updater to restore it, but it still is opening as a disk when I connect it to my computer. Any ideas?

I have had the same problem. I have found the following.
    1) Windows media player will see the iPod and try to sync. Somehow this "forces" it into disk mode. Just something I noticed on my PC.
    2) Someone on here posted that some anti-virus software will affect somehow into disk mode also. I have yet to confirm that. But my disk mode is turned off in iTunes and I still can see it as a disk at times. I have yet to pin it down to a certain pattern.

  • IPod 5th gen - I used it as a hard drive to transfer to new laptop but something is wrong,my ipod will not let me access my music

iPod 5th generation - I tried to transfer my music using ipod as hard drive to a new laptop (windows) - something went wrong (probably me) now my ipod will not let me access the music which was stored on it - it now says it is at capacity when I put on 3000 songs on it - (30gb)

    Hello otwlottie,
So you successfully transferred the music from your iPod to your new iTunes library correct? If so, did you restore your iPod to factory settings after that?  Maybe start there for now.

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.

  • IPod Fifth Gen Scratches, Pt. 2

Okay, I'm back. I posted quite a while ago toward the end of August about my 5G iPod getting scratched quite badly, and someone suggested the Brasso trick to get them out. It worked...or so I thought.
After doing so, I bought a nice $24 (US Dollars) Belkin case for it. Since then, It hasn't left it's case. At all.
And strangely enough, I counted four more scratches appearing after I put the case on! I was shocked at this, seeing as my nano has never had any kind of case on it, and it doesn't have any kind of scratches on it.
Now, I don't know if there is any kind of repair program for this (Like the early nanos), but it would seem, by observation, that the 2005 5G iPods are prone to scratches.
So I pondered about buying a new iPod front panel off of www.ifixit.com. A white one, at that (My iPod's black, and I hear they are quite scratch-prone).
So I wanted to ask, would anyone have any insight on this little annoyance?

I have just bought my 4th ipod athe new 80gig video and bought one of these from the uk apple store.
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/6654042/wo/T25FMpvGREJr3AW3E 021C78WgWC/2.PSLID?mco=9467270C&nplm=TG138
although I case my ipods and look after them, I noticed that they all get a light scratching as there are times they are taken out of the case, I have always put pda film over the screen so it's never been a problem. However with all the bad vibes I read about the new black ipods scratching i decided to take some extra insurance for the 5G.. this skin covers the face and after careful application there were a few inconsequential air bubbles but after a week they had all vanished and if you did not know there was a film on it you would not realise it is invisible. I did not install the wheel cover as i reckon it works best without a cover... I wish this kind of film had been about when i bought my first 3G and would recommend anyone with a small amount of patience and a new or scatchless ipod to get one.. you can then choose and use which ever case you wish and not care about scratching it
