Ipod not in dropdown list and itunes won't play from ipod after 8.1download

ever since I downloaded 8.1 itunes my ipod no longer appears in the dropdown list (right click on song or podcast - add to playlst) when i want to transfer a song or podcast to my ipod. My only option is to drag and drop now. Also I cannot play on my computer a song or podcast that is on my ipod,(I do this to sync my ipod to where it last played) it's as though it is not recognizing it even though my ipod icon does appear in itunes. I use a 1GB shuffle.

i knew the solution was in front of my face! thank you so much pointing it out for me : )

  • Why is Lion so slow?  Everything takes 2-3X as long as before and iTunes won't play most of my movies.

Got Lion.  Now, opening a movie with Quicktime takes 10 seconds, opening ANY application takes twice as long as before, and iTunes won't play most of my movies that used to play in previous versions of iTunes.  I'm frustrated.  Even the web is markedly slower with pages taking 5-6 seconds to load up (and they are simple pages sans videos).
What gives?  Any solutions?  Anyone having similar issues?
The ONLY thing that took less time was Disk Utility...it ran in 4 minutes when it used to take 7--8 minutes.

Lion is much more demanding on memory.  It is almost unusable on my computers that have 2 gig of memory. On the macbook air I am typing this from, it is using 1.5 Gig of memory out of 2 gig. Anything like playing a movie is going to be quite compromised.  SL used about 400 MB for normal low-demand operations.  The memory is soldered on in this laptop, so I am screwed, but it is fairly cheap and easy to add memory to most others.  OWC is a good place to look.  Max it out.  I think your iMac can take 6 GB.

  • Ipod not recognized in windos and itunes after udating software

My ipod was working just fine. But then itunes said that my ipod software was not updated so I went ahead and updated, after that is not recognized in windows and itunes.it does not even turn on, when i press a button in the screen apears a electric plug, like if it was saying connect to charge. but the only thing that happens when i plug it to the computer is that the same plug apears again in the screen.
    thank you for your help

If your iPod is showing a picture that looks like the wall plug, then it does need to be connected to the USB wall charger. Sometimes other devices that will charge the iPod (such as a car charger or a docking station) will do the trick.
If you're near any Apple retail stores you could take your iPod there and see if they have one they can connect your iPod to for you, and then you'll have it up and running again.

  • Notes and calendar won't sync from iPod to iPad, but will sync from iPad to iPod. Ideas?, Notes and calendar won't sync from iPod to iPad, but will sync from iPad to iPod. Ideas?

I cloud is on for notes and calendar on both devices. They have the same default calendar. It's just wierd that i can write a note on the iPad and it shows up on the iPod, but not the other way around.  Same with adding calendar events. What's going on?

First check that all your settings are correct, that notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the notes you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone'  or other non iCloud account (you can do this by checking in accounts on an iOS device, or the left side panel in mail on a computer), non iCloud notes will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your notes are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling notes syncing.

  • Why does it show a (!) when i double click on the play list and it won't play the song?

why does it show when i double click on the playlist and it won't play the song?

The exclamation point means iTunes is no longer able to locate the track and the location specified.  See this article for more details.

  • ITunes won't play one song after another automatically.

I have an iMac . iTunes has always played one selection after another automatically, and I am not talking about shuffle. I downloaded an audio book (Mp3 files) which loaded into music, but I have to choose each segment manually, it won't play one segment sequentially automatically.

Are the selections un-checked?  Items that are not checked will not automatically play.  If they are checked, go into Get Info and see if you have the "Skip when shuffling" option set -- if it is, and if you happen to have Shuffle turned on, they won't play.

  • TS1538 My computer and itunes won't recognise my ipod. It's not coming up anywhere, not even in the device manager as a camera or whatever the troubleshooting said it might say. Plugging it in with the USB cable just charges the device.

Ipod is not connecting to itunes. It doesn't show up in itunes, 'my computer' or the device manager and plugging in the cord just charges the device.

Hey, first off, i'd like to say i'm not extremely technical - but i'll try and keep up. i'm having more or less the same problem as JasperMack, only, iTunes is recognizing it as my brother's iPod - Not mine. I've searched through the device manager and i got nothing that will recognize it there. My iPod DOES however charge, it almost takes on the roll of my brother's - only problem is when i got to sync it, it says "no device avalible" or whatever. I got this iPod 2nd-Hand (probably a bad idea) and i have no idea what to do. This is the 1st time i've attempted to to plug it into my computer and it's already taking a flying leap into hte zone of "not working" anything???

  • New hard drive and ITunes won't recognize my IPod

Hi, I recently had to replace my hard drive. I had to download Itunes again. While trying to upload the songs from my IPod, the Itunes application tells me that my ipod belongs to another library and my only option is to sync the library with my ipod (erasing all my songs from my ipod) or upload all "purchased" Itunes from my ipod (which are only about 10 songs!). How do I make it so my library recognizes my ipod as its own and not "another"?
    Thanks.

Only the purchased iTunes songs can be copied from the iPod to iTunes - Unless you find some iPod hack program to access your iPod's library.
The best way to make sure you don't lose your songs on your iPod is to manually update your iPod.
    Loading songs onto iPod manually
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.1/en/2580.html
This setting allows you to drag & drop songs from your library to your iPod and won't ask you the "sync the library" question. You will have to manually eject your iPod before disconnecting it.

  • Windows and iTunes won't recognize my iPod

I got a new iPod couple of weeks ago and it worked all well for a while. Then added some videos on my iPod and suddenly I realised the "other" files in iTunes has grown up to 700Mb. After deleting the videos the other files were still there and I started having problems when connecting my iPod to the PC.
Windows started telling me my iPod isnt working properly and I just used another USB port and after a while restored my iPod. After restirong, the slow USB ports of my PC sometimes recognized the iPod but now even they dont work.
I've tried connecting my iPod to all the USB ports of my PC and also used different cables and I'm turning desperate. The iPod is charged when I connect it to the computer, but it does not show up in iTunes nor in My Computer anymore.
Update: Now it doesn't charge anymore. Windows still says it is an unknown device and I can use my ipod normally even when it is connected to the computer as if there was no connection.
More updating: I rebooted the ipod while it was connected and now iTunes found it. I still don't know for sure if the problem is solved.
iPod 30g (New) Windows XP Pro

You should use a USB port on the back of your computer when you connect. What other devices do you have connected to the USB chain (other than your keyboard and mouse)?
You need to read this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136 Even if no new driver is available for your computer, reload the USB Driver following the instructions in the article.
Once your iPod can be seen in Device Manager in Windows, change the drive letter on the iPod to something higher (try M or P) and then reformat it (FAT32 format, don't do a quick format). After this Restore it in iTunes.

  • In Disk Mode and songs won't transfer from IPod to ITunes

When I called Apple, the gentleman told me that I first needed to put my IPod into Disk Mode. I got my IPod into disk mode and thought I'd be able to transfer songs very easily, atleast it was last time. I had to reinstall ITunes and lost my Library so I thought I could just pull them off my IPod. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…

MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
    YamiPod Software (Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to manual transfer – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod
    10 - Click OK
-- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
–-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • Voice memo won't sync to iTunes, won't play on ipod!

After successfully recording several lessons and syncing them to my laptop, my most recent voice memo did not get copied over to iTunes as usual when syncing. On closer examination, the particular voice memo will not play on the iPod, although in the iPod list of voice memos it appears as a normal voice memo, i.e., with the right time stamp and of appropriate length.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

I had same problem with my ipodtouch 5g on ios 6. i synced all of the voice memos but two of them wont sync for some reason.i called apple and was on phone for hour and half but they cound solv it. i used and idea and recorded the memos on my laptop with an aux cable and it worked out fine. it is also very easy for windows and mac.

  • Updated from xp to windows 7 and iTunes won't play music

I have recently updated my computer from windows XP to windows 7, and I backed everything up on a flashdrive. I reinstalled all of my documents from the flashdrive using Window's easy transfer. I then downloaded the new iTunes. After it was done transfering the songs and I went to play a song, it would not play. I then closed iTunes and re-opened it, when a sign pops up that reads "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly." I don't understand what is going on because iTunes has every song I had from when I had windows XP but it won't play them. If you know how to fix this or what is going on I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks.

  • Purchased songs and videos won't play on iPod

new 5th gen iPod shows songs and videos purchased from itunes onto computer and synched into ipod library, but won't play them. songs loaded from cd play fine on ipod.

Usually when this happes, the software on the ipod os not up to date.
whe nyou connect the ipod to the computer and the ipod shows in itunes under devices, click the update or restore button to the right in the summary screen so itunes can check online to see if there is an updated version of the ipod software online.
If you update first and that does not work, try the restore.
