IPod seems to be full even though I emptied everything...

Hi,
I have deleted all the songs in my iPod Shuffle and deleted all the files in it as well. However it only gives 1.2 MB available space and I can not move anything to it anymore. This happened after I stuffed it with loads of files until it was full. I moved all of them to the trash (and it does not seem to have anymore data in it) but iPod still seems to be full. I tried to restore it to factory settings but my iPod software updater does not recognize my iPod, no matter how many times I tried to "reset" it as shown on the iPod support homepage. This is even though iTunes can see my iPod and I can access it on the finder as well. It is the updater software only that seem to be unable to see the iPod. (I tried all the versions from 1.3 to 2.0.1.)
Please help...

Thanks,
Emptying the trash solved the problem of space.
Now I am happily listening to my music again.
The iPod Software Updater is still not seeing the iPod though.
The version numbers I gave refered to the updater software.
I will try it on another computer.
Thanks again...

  • "Startup Disk is Full" even though I have 3.5 GB free

I just upgraded my RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB yesterday (2 x 2GB Kingston DDR2), and today I'm getting a message that my "startup disk is full," even though I have 3.5 GB of space on my hard drive.
I've gotten this message in the past when I only have 100 or 50 MB left on my hard drive, but 3.5 GB of space seems like a lot of room to be getting the "startup disk is full" error.
I know I'm supposed to have 10% of my hard drive free for optimal usage, but I'm wondering whether this error message is an indication that the RAM isn't working the way it's supposed to.
Also, the other thing I noticed acting funny since the RAM got installed was shutdown problems. Today I had to hold down the power button to shut down, since doing it via the finder window was not working.
Thanks in advance for any ideas and tips!

    Hi Markus,
The sleepimage file is from Safe Sleep. This saves the contents of RAM to the HD each time Mac is put to sleep in case of a "mishap" so that data would be saved. As you've discovered, it can take up a bit of HD space (as much RAM as you have installed). Thus, I've disabled Safe Sleep and trashed that file. Sleep is now faster too. If you care to do this, here are my directions:
    Safe Sleep: How to Disable
Safe sleep copies the content of RAM onto the HD prior to sleep, so it can cause very slow go-to-sleep performance (slow), and sometimes additional issues.
    To disable Safe Sleep:
    Open Terminal.
Copy and paste in the following two commands:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

    sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false

    Hit return.
When Terminal is finished doing its thing, type in
    Exit
    hit return, and quit Terminal.
If you do decide to disable Safe Sleep, there’s also a file you can get rid of to save some space on your HD (this file can be as large as the amount of RAM you have installed, probably 2-4GB for the average Mac).
From the Finder (just click once anywhere on a bare Desktop area to make the correct menu bar appear).
Click on the Go menu and select Go to Folder.
Copy and paste or enter the following in the “Go to the Folder:” field.
    /var/vm
Trash the file named “sleepimage.” (Do NOT trash the file named “swapfiles.”)
Close the windows, empty the trash, and you should have faster sleeping and a bit more free HD space.

  • Emails sent to me are sometime returned to the sender with the message "Inbox full" even though I have maybe less than 100 emails in the Inbox and I regularly compact them. How can I increase the storage space?

    Question
Emails sent to me are sometime returned to the sender with the message "Inbox full" even though I have maybe less than 100 emails in the Inbox and I regularly compact them. I delete emails from the Inbox and the Sent and Trash boxes to overcome this. How can I increase the storage space to stop this happening?

    Hi terrybohle1938,
Firefox is a web browser. It provides access to online content. Things like your email are handled by the content provider. Who is your email provider? You'll have better luck consulting their documentation.
That being said, deleting only email is a great way to free up space. Another option would be to purchase a "Premium" account if your email provider offers this service. Many times more storage space is offered as part of paid subscription.
    Hopefully this helps!

My hard drive is full even though I've deleted loads of things, how do I go about cleaning it up/ free up space?

An obvious question... but... have you emptied the Trash and performed a Restart...

  • HELP. iPod space = full, even though it's not.

Hey. Yesterday my iPod Nano 4 GB (not really, it's only 3,62 GB) turned weird, so I clicked on Reset and I thought that it would be all normal again. ..No. First of all, 1/2 of my music disappeared (on my iPod) so I added all the missing music again. Now it says that 1,6 GB = music, and 2,1 GB = other stuff. I've only got the three basic games, and i've got no podcasts/movies or anything. I don't know what's the problem because I can't seem to find an answer here in the forums. It also says that I haven't got enough space. I'm apparently missing 0,06 GB..
The second problem is that I added some new music but somehow, it won't show up in my iPod, even though it shows up in iTunes. This is really irritating. :/
I got my iPod Nano on December 24th '08 (maybe '07, i'm not sure), in case anybody wonders.
    Thanks in advance.

I had a similar issue with a 180 or 160 GB (or whatever the largest memory config was, I got rid of it so I forget) iPod. Turns out the drive went bad and as soon as it reached the 1/2 way point it would say "Memory Full" or give me some other error and crash. Worked for months after that as long as I was careful to not sync to fill more than 1/2 the drive.
You may still have all your music on there but it may be curropted and unreadable so it's taking up space but the software can't address it or delete/sync to it, etc.
Try a complete system reset first. If that fails you may have a failing unit.

  • Hard drive full even though it's not.

Don't have much on my mac but in the HD info it says i have 616 kb left which is obviously nothing. Even when i delete files and empty trash it returns to 616kb even though I've deleted stuff. Seems something is returning the remaining space to 616kb no matter what i delete off the hard drive.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Jim.
First of all disconnect any external drives/ memory sticks etc. and restart your computer.
Now, in the Finder go to the "Go" menu and select "Go to folder"
Type in "/Volumes" (with the slash but without the quotes).
This should take you to the "Volumes" folder.
In this you should find only aliases . If you find a folder or other item in there which is not an alias then it is likely to be the explanation for your missing space.
See http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?t=3852 for a discussion of the issue and how to deal with it.
Be careful, though. DON'T delete any alias which you find in there, and DO ask here first if you have any doubts about what you are doing.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • When sending e-mail, a message says that the sent folder is full,-- even though it is not-- however the mail still gets sent. No problem sending mail to myself

I am running Thunderbird version 33.1 Recently, when sending e-mail, I get an error message indicating that the sent folder is full and that I should empty or compress it to fix the problem-- so I emptied it-- problem remains. Also, there is no record of sending the e-mail in the sent folder, even though the mail has been sent. No such problems occur when I send mail to myself.
    Any suggestions ???

If you deleted some of the messages you have done one half of the process. Deleting a message just marks it for deletion and hides it from view. You have to COMPACT the folder to actually delete the messages and free up the space.
I agree that Thunderbird did a poor job naming this process because it is the subject of much misunderstanding.
    Read about compacting here.

  • Can I exchange iPod for a new one even though I bought it at bestbuy?

My brand new iPod touch 5g has a loose slightly sunk in home button and a scratch on the inside of the rear facing camera lense   I don't think the people at bestbuy would think it's a big enough deal to give me a new one though.
    Just ***** cuz I spent 300 $ on it.

    Yes

    Still yes.

  • My backed up files from iphone to my mac cannot be seen as they are, but only numbers and letters, they seem to be encrypted even though I did not click on encrypted when backing up

I am using a Mac Book Air to back up my Iphone 5 on Itunes. What I can see of the files are encrypted even though I did not click on the Encrypt box.
    Please, help.

Backups of an iPhone made using iTunes are stored in a format that is only meant for use in a restore and are not meant to be accessed directly. There are other methods of transferring things like photos and contacts to your computer such as iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer, iCloud: My Photo Stream FAQ, and https://www.apple.com/icloud/
If you absolutely must directly access an iTunes backup there is 3rd party extraction software available such as http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/ibackupextractor/

I have to input a password to log in to my Macbook Pro Santa Rosa under Mountain Lion. Now suddenly the built-in keyboard doesn't work at all so I cannot use my computer. I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

  • Port Forwarding doesn't work even though I did everything properly

I am trying to set up a server that went down after I tried a different way of hosting it with a program that messed everything up and when ever i try forwarding any port, even though I know how, I do everything I need to do and I check if my port is open on canyouseeme.org and it shows up as no route to host.  Is there a firewall in the airport i need to disable for it to work?

Problem fixed. Had to uninstall Flash from the control panel and then reinstall.

  • IPod is full even though iTunes library is no where near iPod's capacity

My iTunes library contains 19.55GB of music. I automatically update my ipod, so that the files are the same in iTunes and my iPod, yet the iPod has 27.69GBs on it. I have no additional files stored on my iPod. Does iTunes include the space of album art when calculating the size of the library? In other words, could this be album art taking up space on my iPod that isn't accounted for in iTunes? Or is it something else?

    Hey Bean,
A few things you may want to know/try...............
    1.The iPod's capacity is 27.80GB(Mac) & 27.69 (PC). The 2.5 Gigs missing are for the iPod's OS.
2.Album art is included in the iD3 tags attached to each track. However, when you add album art, it does make the track a fraction bigger (but you won't see the increase). Unless you are using RAW photos which are HUGE/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic_ __/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
3.As WinDoze doesn't see the iPod nativley, it opens it like a generic USB device. It knows it's an iPod because you have iTunes installed. because of this you may find that there are hidden files on your iPod (usually drivers for other USB devices). These can just be deleted by showing hidden files.
4.If that is not the case, Restore the iPod using the 'iPod Updater' (latest version free on Apple.com/support/ipod). This will wipe the iPod and re-write the iPod's OSwith the updated software.
Once you've done that put the iPod into manual update and transfer the songs (you can put it back to auto-update afterwards).
5.If you sync your photos to the iPod, you can have the full file coppied over, uncheck this as they take up a lot more space than the thumbnails.
    hope they help?

  • I cannot seem to connect my iPod to my car media even though it says connected?

I cannot seem to connect my iPod to any Bluetooth device, including my iPad or car media.

Errors when updating leads to corrupt system files and this may be your problem. If you're using windows, connect your device to PC and run any third party app like Syncios. If it detects, you maybe in luck and try to back-up your data if possible. I hope that it won't and if doesn't, there is no other way to recover files. You should be restoring with iTunes and all data will be erased, or else your device may become unusable.

  • My 4th gen 8GB Ipod touch is full even though I've only got 600 songs.

My 4th generation Ipod touch has 600 songs and no apps, yet when I plug it in to my computer it's filled with 5.5gb of 'other'. I've looked in the settings to see what the other is but it won't say. I've reverted my Ipod to its factory settings deleted everything bar my music and yet it's still full. Help.

Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup...
But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup...
Then a Restore as New is the way to go...
