IPod shows up as a Generic Volume

I have the 5th generation color, 60GB, IPod with ITunes 6.0 running on Windows XP through a FireWire Port. The IPod was working great until my last automatic update from ITunes to IPod. Only about half of my new songs were transferred and now ITunes will not recognize my IPod anymore. I notices in Windows Explorer that my IPod is now showing up as drive f: rather than drive e: as before this problem. It is a "Generic volume" and "is not formatted" in dive f: I also get meesages that say the IPod needs to be reformatted using the latest Ipod Updater. But when I try running the Updater, it gets as far as "initializing" and will not continue. The Update and Restore options are grayed out so I can't even reformat the IPod. I've tried resetting the Ipod and have downloaded the latest versions of the Ipod Updater and ITunes 6.0. How can I reassign the IPod to drive E:? Also, you should know that I successfully updated an older IPod on the same computer: Itunes 6.0 connected to it (as Drive e:) with no problem and automatically transferred all my new songs. Help Please Anyone

Hi Donald-
The drive letter issue may be the key to solving the problem you're having, especially if you have network drives or an external drive attached to your computer. Try assigning the iPod a drive letter much higher in the alphabet, such as P:.
Instructions for doing this can be found in Mike Kelley's site below:

  • What is generic volume? Cause its annoying me!!!

    Hi everyone!!
I recently had my ipod replaced cause the first one had countless problems with it. Anyway, now everytime I try to eject my ipod from itunes it says its in use by another application...but everything is closed, I have no other programs running or music playing. Or...I'll try to disconnect it from the safely remove hardware window, and it has three things I can remove, USB something a-rather, generic volume E:, or Apple ipod...I choose apple ipod but it says the generic volume cannot be stopped now, try stopping it later or some crap like that. Ive had to rip my ipod from the computer a few times cause I just cant disconnect it the proper way! I really don't want to have to do that anymore I'll surely ruin something!!
Thanks guys, hopefully someone can help me!
    Have a good one!!
    Laura.
    Dell   Windows XP

First of all a generic volume is in basic terms a formatted harddrive that windows sees. the iPod reports to windows its connected but windows also sees the Harddrive in it (The Generic Volume)
Secondly the reason its giving you the "in use by another application" is because even tho you may not have any programs running you can see, there is software/programs in the background running you don't see, the main thing that will cause this is an antivirus program like norton or Mcafee. they run in the background to protect you from viruses. when you connect the iPod the antivirus program running in the background "Grabs" it and watches it for any virus activity. there are also other programs within windows running in the background that will cause this too.
One good way to stop this from happening is to goto iTunes with your iPod connected to the PC and deselecting "Enable Disk Usage". the quickest way to get to this is to rightclick your iPod in the sorce list on the left and select "iPod Options". hit the "Music" sub tab and uncheck enable disk use, you may want to also set your iPod to auto update all songs or selected play list.

  • Generic Volume in Device manager

My BB is not being recognized in Windows XP SP3.  It shows up as a generic Volume.  I did recently upgraded my SD memory card to a 8gig.  It did recognize it under options, so i do think that it is working properly, as far as the blackberry is concerned.
So, i thought it was a driver issue, and decided to uninstall the BB desktop manager, and reinstall, and that didn't work.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

This is funny, so, I resolved my issue, lol.  This is what it was.  I had a USB driver issue, w/ a software product I installed on my computer. The product is called "Acronis® True Image Home 2009"
Its a backup/recovery software.  I got the idea from a post i was browsing after looking up the error " "This Device Cannot Start. (Code 10)"
Under the Generic Volume error code...
Google brought me to a site " http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-3658632.php"
Looking up the "Class lower filters", "Class upper filters", "Device upper filters", Device lower
    filters".
I found a list of Drivers under, I think, Class Lower Filters. and looked up the programs involved, Acronis was among them... So... I uninstalled Acronis, and the problem was solved...
I posted this follow up to help users and Blackberry/RIM.  Hopefully some day they will come up w/ an update so I could run both
    Thank you and good luck

  • TS1393 I cannot eject my iPod using either itunes or the eject button on bottom tool bar beacuse it says something is in use by another application or "The device 'generic volume' cannot be stopped because  a program is still accessing it" Synced new iPad

How can I eject my ipod when neither itunes not the "safe to eject" button will allow it.  Itunes says "...cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application."  The safe to eject button says "The device 'generic volume' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it."  The has never happened before.  The only thing new is that I added an iPad yesterday.  Thanks.

Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting.  If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.
Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and download ProcessExplorer.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665 and follow the instructions under Resolution.
Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.
In my case an update to RealPlayer installed a program called RecordingManager that was accessing my iPod.

  • Ipod shows up on PC but not Mac?

Hi there, I've got a strange problem with my year-old Ipod video 30GB.
I accidentally unplugged it from my computer before ejecting it last week. Everything was erased, and since then it won't show up on my Mac at home or at work. It doesn't pop up on the desktop or in ITunes.
I've tried everything: reset, different firewire, usb -- even connected it to a PC to try and restore it. (A lot of help the restore instructions are if the IPod doesn't show up on your computer!) Strangely enough, the IPod showed up on the PC harddrive and itunes and I restored it there. But it's still not recognized on my Mac when I plug it in.
What's extra weird is that when plugged in, teh IPod's "Do not disconnect" sign pops up. So the Ipod knows it's plugged in, but the Mac computer doesn't.
Does anyone have any ideas / has had the same problem? If not, what does one do after their warranty expires to get help? Because all the contact numbers seem to be for people with warranties.
    Thanks so much!!!!!

Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

I want the tracks on my ipod to play at the same volume - does anyone know how to do this? Is it done in itunes or on my Ipod (or can't I do this)

    Plug your device in
In itunes on the left hand side click on the Disclosure triangle - it will show your playlists from your device
Right click on each playlist and click Export-
After exporting them to your comptuer you can import those playlists in to itunes

My iPhone 5 every time I close out of an app by pressing the home button a white blob shows up close to the volume buttons, is that normal?

    Hi Sabrinann21,
I'm not sure what you mean by the "white blob."  Does it look something like this?
If so, that white circle that you see on the right side of the screen is Assistive Touch and can be turned off in the Accessibility settings on the iPhone.

  • IPod shows up in "My Computer" but not iTunes...please help!

Ok so I have a 8gb iPod nano 5g and my computer is Windows XP running Service Pack 3. I have iTunes fully updated, I know this is so because I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled everything related to iTunes 3 times now. I have looked all over Apples support pages, scoured every possible solution to my problem, but nothing is working. Every time I connect my iPod to my computer, a message in iTunes pops up saying "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect iPod and try again." Yes I have googled that exact phrase and looked at every website that offers solutions that don't work for me.
I know that the problem is not the cable, I have tried 3 different cables and none of them work. When I connect it to my parent's Toshiba laptop running XP SP3 and up to date iTunes, the iPod syncs and works perfectly. In addition, the iPod shows up in "My Compter" but when iTunes then pops up, it no longer appears...I am really at wits end and if I can't figure out what to do the next option is probably snapping this thing in half, because I don't want to pay the money to send it to Apple. Thank you for any help.

Look in Troubleshooting in the iPod 4th Gen User Manual pdf and follow the 5 R's. That should replace whatever in the iPod doesn't permit iTunes to see it.

  • TS4062 I can't sync music on my computer to my ipod touch; the ipod shows up under Devices in itunes but does not show buttons (Summary etc.) when I click on it. Suggestions?

I can't sync music already on my computer to my ipod touch; the ipod shows up under Devices in itunes but does not show buttons (Summary etc.) when I click on it. I've read through all the Help tutorials but none of them say what to do if the sync options don't pop up when you highlight the device.  I've already spent way too much time trying to figure this out and it's driving me crazy!  Thanks for any help you can offer.

This is correct.  It will not show in finder.  It is not an external storage device.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  Open itunes connect ipod, do not sync, click File>Transfer Purchases

  • My ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes 7.

Let me start out by saying I've never had any itunes + ipod probems before. Everything has run smoothly up until now.
Last week I upgraded my OS to 10.4.7 because I had been running on 10.2.8 since 2001 and itunes wouldn't let me download albums containing music videos. So I decided it was time for the upgrade. I also upgraded to itunes 7 and had been previously using itunes 6. This is when the problems started. Now whenever I plug my ipod into my computer with my firewire cord, my ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes and I am completely clueless on what to do. No error messages pop up or anything. My ipod charges and that's about it. I tried doing the 5 R's, but none of that helps. I have a feeling it's itunes's problem and not my ipod's. I was thinking that maybe if I uninstall itunes 7 and re-install 6, everyting would work again; but I don't know how to uninstall itunes and I don't want to risk losing my library. I'd just like for itunes 7 to recognise my ipod and update it. Can anyone help me?

My iPod is a click wheel...I think that's fifth generation?
I've always used my firewire cable to update my iPod. I've tried using USB in the past but for some reason it always says that my iPod has low battery and won't let me update it, so I just use firewire. Can I not use firewire with itunes 7?
I'll try using the USB again. It's laying around here somewhere. Just gotta find it.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable

    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.

  • Why won't my iPod work on iTunes or my computer?  It shows up (not on iTunes) and the iPod shows connected but it has to be "formatted." And why are half my songs unable to play on it anymore?  It just skips them!

I've read through several discussions and I've seen a lot of similar issues but none that were quite like mine.  Every time I plug my 3rd gen. iPod nano in it shows it connected on the iPod screen and iTunes opens up but the device does not show up in iTunes.  The icon on the iPod shows connected and gives the arrows circling showing syncing even though it still says connected.  But it won’t show up in iTunes.  It shows up on my windows computer but I can’t click it or make it do anything.  It keeps saying “You need to format the disk before you can do anything.”  And when I hit cancel it beeps and says "Location not available.  Dara error (cyclic redundancy check)."  As if I know what that means!!  And I have 800 songs on it but they aren’t all on my computer and some are on my parents’ computer but I can’t get to that one.  It shows it is a “FAT32” which I have no clue what that means but I’ve never noticed that before.
Windows "can't access the disk" and I don't know why.  It gives me that notification if I try to check the drive or disk or device for problems.  And if you click it on Windows it pops up a screen with formatting things (which I don't know anything about).  And then it closes and says that it CANNOT format the device.
The iPod works almost okay when it isn’t plugged in, but I’ve noticed that half my songs won’t play.  You click on it and it plays the next one in the album.  And it isn’t always the first song in an album but random songs.  And songs I listen to a lot.  You can’t go back (you can only go forward and you can’t skip over the ‘missing’ song) or even click to select those songs.  But other songs play normal, just not half of them that are on the iPod but all of a sudden no longer work.  And I don’t know why.  I have another 3rd gen. iPod nano that doesn’t have ANY of these problems.  It hooks up, it doesn’t need formatting, and all its songs play.  I don’t know what is wrong or what to do.  I’ve tried re-downloading iTunes and everything.  I don’t want to have to reset my iPod and lose everything.
I’ve tried locating the device in iTunes and it shows the iPod but it gives this weird symbol and I can’t select it.  It’s like a white box with a box that is outlined in blue with six random icons in the middle.   I’ve seen it before and it always means something is wrong or a file (which is where I have seen it before) is corrupted.  And like I said I have a second iPod nano of the same generation and it does not give this weird symbol.  Plus it connects just fine.  It’s this one iPod.
I don’t understand what is going on.  It worked just fine and then all of a sudden I noticed songs wouldn’t play so I went to plug it into iTunes and nothing has worked.  I’ve searched discussions and none of the tips help.  But I want my songs to play again and I want my iPod back.

  • Apple, Pfft!!! (Another iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes post)

How in the world does Apple market the iPod, etc... as if 10-year olds and grandmothers can operate the technology, when having viewed these message boards for 10 hours yesterday, it seems as even the tech savy people who can make a computer out of two pieces of bread and a piece of bologna have to wrack their brains to make it come a step closer to actually working. Blah!!!
Anyway, the problem that I am having is the problem that a lot of other people are having and seems to be the main theme at the moment.
I am unable to have iTunes recognize my iPod. My PC will once-in-a-blue-moon recognize the iPod as its own drive in Windows Explorer, but mostly all I get is the big freeze. Every time I connect my iPod to the USB, all of the programs cease to operate until I unplug it. I am not having memory problems either.
Here's what I've done. I have updated the iPod Updater to the 06-23-06 version. I was able to get it to update the software on my 60GB iPod. I got all excited only to then have it give me several error messages 1) an internal manager error and 2) some unable to dock or something like that (sorry I'm not at my home cpu.) Once while I was doing the 4-hour battery charge my iPod came up in the source list in iTunes, but I have been unable to have it be rerecognized.
I've unistalled and reinstalled iTunes and the iPod Updater over 10 times and have gone through the 5 Rs as well as all of the steps on
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716 (My iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes)
I've even messed with msconfig and tried a whole bunch of other suggestions. It doesn't seem that Apple has a fix for this problem and we are all left with paperweights.
    Any suggestions?
Thanks you all and condolences to everyone who is going through this same problem. I swear what happened to plug and play. Pfft!!!

You know they are probably going to search me out and crash my computer for posting this but i had the same problem with iTunes. i spent hours, went through the 50000 "R's" and changed my settings and formatted and reset and reloaded and then i tried Realaudio. it found all the songs i had loaded into iTunes and put them on my shuffle first try. you can get Realaudio at <www.real.com> Let me know how it works...
