IPS and IDS- ARP Inbalance-of-Requests and TCP High Port Sweep

Does anybody knows about ARP Inbalance-of-Requests and TCP High Port Sweep IPS signature? We've been receiving numerous numbers of alerts with this kind of signature in the IPS.
Actually, I'm planning to tune these events in IPS and I really need your inputs if it is safe to tune. Based on my investigation, most of the source and destination IP's are internal to our network (e.g servers, workstation and other device).
I think this is false positive incidents...
Best regards,
Carlou

This will be a normal signature to see triggered if you are watching outbound traffic from your internal network. As long as the source of the traffic is your internal hosts, and the destination is external hosts, this is likely just normal behavior.
This signature triggers when a single host sends TCP SYN packets to a number of different hosts, perhaps because of multiple web sessions going, or pop-up windows while web surfing.

• Use Sign.xml and Encrypt.xml for both request AND response within WSDL?

Hi,
ALSB: 2.6
I was wandering if it's possible to use abstract outof the box WS-Policy file within WSDL file to specify encryption

So far, it only works for either request or response BUT not both. i.e. within WSDL file

So is this a feature not supported in ALSB 2.6 yet or am I missing something dead simple?
Thanks in advance
Sam

Instead of specifying policies for input and output separately you could place the policy reference only once in the operation element. Maybe will this solve your problem...

• The difference between the QM status and total status of a request?

Hi Experts,
I have some confusion about the concept of the status of a request. In the data target management window, we have QM status and technical status of a request, and in the monitor, we have total status of the request. Can somebody tell me the difference between the three. Please give me some detailed info about this or provide me some document regarding this. your great help will be highly appreciated.
Eileen

QM status can be edited..but technical status cannot be edited..
in the monitor..only total status can be edited..

• WLC 4400 and IDS/IPS

One of my clients is keen to know the IDS/IPS capabilities with WLC 4400. Any hints? Also can anyone explain IDS sensor to me? Thank you.

There are a number of IDS capabilities that are highlighted regarding the WLC. Unfortunately, you will find that the product continues to suffer from ongoing false positives and a severe lack of documentation (and support) for the IDS.
For example, if you utilize containment against a rogue AP (which is used to prevent users from attaching to the rogue), the system detects its own containment messages as a denial of service attack. The system is not intelligent enough to know that it is the source of these messages and ignore them.
Initially, Cisco flagged these false positive as "cosmetic" and claimed that to fix them required a "feature request that must be run through the Cisco sales team" which we did in the spring of 07. Cisco has be VERY slow in coming around on getting these fixed (it has been well over a year since these have been documented and they are still not resolved in the current version of 4.2).
The Wireless IDS system is also famous for other false alarms which Cisco TAC has linked to alarming on normal behavior when a client goes out of range and a string of deauthentication messages is sent to make sure that the conversation has ended. The WLC 4.2 continues to flag these as false-positive denial-of-service attacks even though the IDS parameters could be adjusted (from the factory) to account for the known 64 repeated deauths that are sent.
The IDS file is capable of "tuning" but the parameters are very lightly documented. In fact, the IDS parameter file itself had the least sparse version of documentation and it is a text file only 200-lines long.
In terms of determining if a rogue AP is on-wire. This functionality does not work reliably (not just if there is no path on the wired network to the controller which is understandable) but even if the rogue AP is on the same subnet as the controller. It just plain does not work.
If you are attempting to determine if there are clients on the rogue AP, this mechanism works with limited success since the AP has to catch the client attaching during its brief scan interval. This results in misleading information.
There are other false alarms that appear to be related to a specific chipset (using the OUI / first octet of the MAC address). However, there has been very little movement on Cisco's part in getting resolution to getting these anomalies addressed. The basic attitude has been "if we didn't see it in our lab in San Jose when we wrote the code, there's nothing we can do". Since the IDS lacks any ability to "phone home" (sending the alarms it is seeing to the development team) they end up having to develop in a relatively limited environment.
For more information, please reference the following:
Wireless LAN Controller IDS Signature Parameters
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_tech_note09186a008063e5d0.shtml
I would send you the link to some of the bugs, such as CSCsj06015, CSCsh35010, CSCsk60655, etc. but the Cisco bug tool ( http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/ )is currently not working (no doubt the system is getting overworked). Maybe the site will be up when you read this.
In the interest of fairness, there have been efforts over the past year by Cisco to address these false alarms and a number of them appear to finally be resolved.
Bottom line: In my opinion, the wireless IDS is still not ready for prime time. To quote my customer, "I just can't trust it". Unless you set your customer's expectations fairly low, you will both end up disappointed.
That said, the product itself still has many compelling reasons to implement it including ease of installation and management. If you are willing to wade through the various bugs in the IDS and WCS it still is the best game in town.

• IPS and IDS configuration

Hi,
The concepts of IDS and IDS are clear for me. Now I want to understand the difference between IDS and IPS in terms of deployement (does it use the same ports for monitoring and and command and control) and configuration (SPAN...).
Thanks.

Given this info, I'm going to assume that you don't want to run your IPS-4240 sensors inline...
Is it a safe guess that you're going to use the eight total monitoring interfaces you have to instead passively monitor different legs of the network, and that each switch will be configured to provide that capability via a SPAN on each switch?
BTW, I can't give you specifics on configuring SPAN without knowing which switch platform(s) you're using. In order to perhaps save time, here's some links for configuring SPAN and RSPAN on some more common switch platforms:
2940 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat2970/12119ea1/2970scg/swspan.htm
2950 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat2950/12119ea1/2950scg/swspan.htm
2970 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat2970/12114ea1/2970scg/swspan.htm
3550 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12112cea/3550scg/swspan.htm
3560 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat3560/12119ea1/3560scg/swspan.htm
3750 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat3750/12119ea1/3750scg/swspan.htm
4000 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat4000/7_5/config/span.htm
6500 series - http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/sw_8_3/confg_gd/span.htm
If you have another switch, just use the string "configure SPAN RSPAN " in the cisco.com search engine and you should find what you need.
Though you want info on deploying the IPS-4240, here's a link with info for all the platforms:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps4077/prod_installation_guides_list.html
Finally, here's a link for software configuration itself (varous versions):

I hope this helps,

• Switch-independent load-balancing NIC teaming on server-side and MAC/ARP flapping on L2/L3 switches

Since active deployment of Windows Server 2012, our servers support team began to utilize new feature - switch-independent load-balancing NIC teaming. At first look it seems great - no additional network configuration is required and load balancing is performed by server itself by sending frames in round-robin or some hash algorithm out from different NICs (say two for simplicity) but with same MAC address. Theoretical bandwith is now grown up to 2Gbps (if we have two 1G NICs per server) against failover NIC teaming configuration, when one of two adapters is always down.
But how does this affect (if does) switching and routing performance of network equipment? From point of view of L2 switch - it has to rewrite its CAM table each time a server sends frame from different NIC. Isn't it expensive operation? Won't it affect switching in a bad way? We see in our logs that same server make switches to change mac-to-port associations several times per second.
Well, and how does it affect routing, if the switch to which server is connected is L3 switch an performs routing for the subnet server connected to? Will CEF operate well if ARP entry chages several times per second?
Thank you.

Since nobody answered here, we created service request and got the following answer (in short):
L2 MAC flapping between ports is very bad and you must avoid such configurations as much as possible. There is one possible variant that can be considered in your situation - use port-channel (either L2 or L3), in this configuration port-channel will be treted as single port and there won't be flapping.

• Js-confirm box with request and passing value: incorrect url

Hi folks!
Scenario: User clicks on link-column field in tablular form, Confirm box pops up with a confirmation message, with "OK" generates a request and should pass a value from the form into an item for further processing.
The URL in the column link as of now looks like that:
javascript: apex.confirm("message goes here...", {request:"EQDONE", set:{"P2100_X": "#EQMID#"}});For some reason just nothing happens. When I omit the "javascript:", I get an unvalid-url error message. But if I change the procedure name, shoudln't I get some error message also?
Please tell me what's wrong. Thank you! :)

Hmm... Ok, makes sense... a little.
The use of (in my case) #EQMID# works, if the target is not URL but "Page in App", and you use the Column Link Dialog fields "Name" and "Value", but maybe because at this point it gets renderes into html and not when called from a javaScript function? Thats how I understand it now.
However: I have just looked into the html-sourcecode. The java Script call IS actually fully rendered with the corrosponding IDs.

• OIM11g - Approval Workflow - Requester and Approver is same

Hi All,
I have a scenario where , requests are approved by a group. ( Resource Owners group).
and if anyone needs access to this resource, the members of the group will approve the requests.
What if any member of the "Resource Owners" groups raises a request on the same object ?? OIM functionally sends it to the group for approval, and it will become a self approval and is a conflict.
How to avoid this kind of scenarios.
Regards
Vicky
Edited by: vicky on Dec 7, 2011 5:18 AM

AFAIK I haven't seen any system property to stop this. SOA does not care about who the requester is and who are the approvers. The way Oracle has impletmented the identity service for OIM in SOA does not handle this. Seems there is no SOD checks. Open a SR which I believe should be taken as a ER.
Thus the workaround would be to get all the members of the approver group less the requester and assign to all the members. The member list should be comma seperated user ids.

Then it says no to my request and, "item not available in the U.S. store." My Mac will not use update iTunes to any later version than the one I have because my os is also out of date, but when I try to update that i cant, so what do I have to do? Please don't tell me I have to buy a new Mac to be up to date.

On the iOS device you must be logged into the store with the exact same Apple ID you used to originally purchase the service. Go to Setting > iTunes & App Stores and if necessary sign out/in and then enable iTM.

• I am trying to open a service request and the site does not work.

I am trying to open a service request and the site does not work with ANY browser. I get the page https://getsupport.apple.com/GetParts.action which says "Send in for service. We just need a little more information." The continue button does not work. I've seen this problem before trying to file support requests. It's as if Apple simply does not want you to create requests.

I just went through several screens and had no problems. Try clearing your browser's cache and/or history.

• Why "slow server alert" when NO running requests and NO open connections??

The snapshot below says it all. Why on earth would my dev machine with no running requests, and no open database connections, kick off a slow server alert?
I will tell you that at the exact same time this snapshot was generated, my other two servers WERE hung and were reporting "Unresponsive alerts", and they connect to the same databases. I am chasing down a chronic communication failure between our database and web servers where everything with a databae connection gets locked/hung at the same time every night, 7 days a week. The hang lasts anywhere from a few mins to 40+ mins.
Is this why my dev server would report slow? And if so, is it the skimmers or what that's causing a slow server alert?? Would it only report "Unresponsive" if there were actual page requests hanging, vs. a "Slow Server Alert"?
This is CF10 (update 12) 64-bit on Windows 2008 R2, IIS 7, connecting to separate Oracle 11g server.
Thanks for any insights.

I'm pretty sure the problem here is somehow related to my other post, but for shites and grins I would still like to know how I can receive a Slow Server alert when no actual page requests are running and it says there are 0 open connections to any of the datasources.

• SRVR(Service Request) and SRVO(Service Order) are not appearing in IC_Agent

Dear friends,
We are planning to implement Service Requests and Service Orders in CRM 7.0 Interaction Center
The Service Transactions(Service Order/Service Request) are available in 'Service Professional' business role but not available in 'IC_AGENT' role.
The things i have observed
1. Without the channel the Transaction Type was not appearing in SAP GUI (CRMD_ORDER)
2. Even after maintaining the Channels the BUS2000223 (Service Request) did not appear in CRMD_ORDER but the SRVO- Service Order transaction type appeared.(BUS2000116 Service Process)
3. Have maintained the SRVO and SRVR transaction types as dependent transaction types in the 'Business Transaction Profile'; still when clieck on the Service Request or Service Order create I am getting the below error
'No transaction type is available for creating a transaction'
Below is the diagnosis
Diagnosis
No transaction type is available when creating a transaction. This can be due to the following reasons:
No transaction type is available according to Customizing
The user has no authorization for the transaction type
System Response
It is not possible to create the transaction.
Procedure
Make sure that:
The transaction type is set up in Customizing
The user has authorization for the transaction type
Can you please guide me where the actual issue is
Regards
Raj
