Is Arch falling behind?

The Frugalware Developer Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Frugalware 0.4 for the i686 and x86_64 architectures, our fourth stable release.
A short and incomplete list of changes since 0.4rc2-i686:
* Updates:
o Update to Linux 2.6.16
o Update to GNOME 2.14
o Update to OpenOffice.org 2.0.2.1
o Lots of minor bugfixes
o Create a howto about upgrading from the previous stable release
* A few statistics since 0.3:
o 4186 changes
o 732 new packages
o 302 fixed bugs
* For who haven't followed the changes in the pre/rc releases, the most important changes:
o Implemented fwcpan, a new tool to install any cpan module, just like it would when you install it with pacman.
o Split OpenOffice, now all language packs and dictionaries can be installed/removed separately.
o Libificated pacman to meet our needs, and the newborn pacman 3 has become the default package manager.
o Network configuration has been redesigned, now we support various network profiles, and many more network parameters (hardware address, multiple ip addresses on a single interface, etc) than before.
o Created a new, more verbose documentation.
o Switched to udev as the default hotplug multiplexer.
o Bugfix: now automounting for usb sticks works fine, not only for CDs or DVDs.
o Added package splitting support.
o Started to work on a PPC port.
o Rewritten setup from scratch in C. The new framework will allow to implement a graphical installer, too.
o The init script system was redesigned: more user-friendly error messages, now uses gettext for translations.
o Modularized Xorg 7.0, Apache 2.2.0, KDE 3.5.1, Firefox 1.5.0.1, Thunderbird 1.5

Puh. They are less developers. But they're much faster and have almost everything included we are waiting for.
What's up with arch? Are we going to loose the bleading edge state :?:

AndyRTR wrote:We don't have support for multiple architectures. Even not in testing. Nobody cares except Xentac.
I care. I'd like to see an x86-64 port. I'd be willing to work on it with you. Is there a todo list anywhere? Anything specific to work on?
We don't have a source build OpenOffice. Some packages take too much time before they get updated even if it is not much work to do(krusader is the last example).
Which is maintained by JGC who happens to have GCC, Glibc, Xorg, GTK2 and gstreamer. Sometimes things have to be prioritised. Krusader doesnt have a higher priority than those. To be fair, a majority of Arch's packages, are updated frequently, and those that arent are in the minority.
For me it loooks that big packages stay quiet long in testing. Is arch becoming more conservative?
Unfortunately it most certainly is.
But it's not the developers... It's the users.
Daily I see posts about people wanting to holdpkg or ignorepkg or whatever xorg, and kernel and udev and other things like that.
The users are becoming conservative. The users dont use testing. So yeah, thats why theres a lot in testing, Nobody tests testing, and then we have to push it out and hope it doesnt mess up too many systems.
raskolnikov: our extra is meant to be stable, but bugs creep in because users dont test.....catch 22!
And running arch not having latest pacman is strange. Isn't it?
Not really.

  • My website navigation bar falls behind the flash content

    Hello All,
    i have the website, http://www.retailtechnologyexperts.com
    and am using safari 4 and to be precise..it is safari 4(530.17)
    i have made almost all the changes,,but the navigation bar falls behind the flash content on the homepage..i have checked this in all the other browsers like,,ie8, ie7, firefox, chrome,,they are responding positively,,by displaying the flash behind the nav bar...
    i was initially having a problem with various browsers...but one by one,,i was able to clear off...but am not able to clear the problem with safari 4
    safari being widely used browser..i dont want to mess up my site here...
    any help will be greatly appreciated..
    thank u,,

    It works here but...
    The pitfall of Flash and movie/video media is they tent to be on top of everything on a web page. No matter what the z space is set for the Flash media in the html code. Use to be called, "rising to the top."
    So, that being said...just because it works on my computer doesn't mean it will work on another computer. There a big chance that the menu will fall behind the Flash media for other viewers. Move the Flash or redesign the menu.
    You might not like this answer but that is the way it is with media on a web page.

  • Icons falling behind body

    Not sure what's up with IE, but it's always the tricky browser to get consistency with any others I try. On this page in Internet Explorer, the 2 images at the bottom right of the page that are within the "credits" class within the footer are falling behind the body. They appear correctly in Firefox and Chrome, but for some reason in IE they're cut off half way. Any suggestions?

    It was a nice day, what can I say.  Just wait till the 4th if you think it's quiet now.
    There are a couple of improperly closed tags on the page that could be causing an issue with IE as you describe.  Try clearing them up first:

  • Bdb cleaner fall behind a lot

    Hi,
    Firstly, apologize for my poor english.
    I have met some issues when we using bdb in our application, and need help.
    We are using bdb in transaction mode in our application.
    The issue we met is that:
    the bdb cleaner is running, and I can saw bdb log files adding and deleting quickly, but the disk size is increasing about 4~5 G per week, and CPU is high.
    Here is our application how to work:
    We have one thread to write data to bdb, about 200 thousand data per hour, and most of them are actually update actions.
    Also we run 2 cleaners to clean bdb.
    The setting is as below:
    je.maxMemory=1310720000
    je.log.fileMax=5242880
    je.nodeMaxEntries=1024
    je.log.bufferSize=20971520
    je.log.numBuffers=5
    je.log.totalBufferBytes=104857600
    je.cleaner.minUtilization=50
    je.cleaner.minFileUtilization=25
    je.cleaner.threads=2
    je.cleaner.readSize=1024000
    je.cleaner.bytesInterval=209715200
    je.cleaner.lockTimeout=100000
    je.cleaner.expunge=true
    ## checkpointer
    je.checkpointer.highPriority=true
    je.checkpointer.bytesInterval=20971520
    je.env.backgroundReadLimit=5
    je.env.backgroundWriteLimit=5
    Does anybody have any suggestion about this issue?
    Thanks,
    Yu

    First, I suggest increasing the number of cleaner threads until the cleaner catches up. This could take quite a long time, since it is so far behind. You may need to set a large number of cleaner threads. Use at least the same number of cleaner threads as there are app threads running concurrently, which access the JE environment. How many app threads are running concurrently?
    Second, I suggest changing some of the config settings that are very different from anything we've tested before.
    The log file size is small. Many users increase the size, but it is very rare to decrease it. I suggest you remove this parameter.
    The nodeMaxEntries setting is extremely high. We've never tested with a setting this high. Please remove this parameter.
    You're using 5 log buffers. More than 3 has no benefit, and wastes memory that could be used for the cache. The log buffer size should never be more than the file size, as this is also a waste of memory. Please use only 3 log buffers and set the buffer size no larger than the file size.

  • [SOLVED] Remote Access to a home Arch system behind the router.

    Hello,
    I am trying to remotely access my home Arch system from school. I did try doing something and this is what I did:
    1. Used DynDns and NO-IP to setup a free domain, I thought NO-IP script was easy to run so I tested this on NO-IP.
    2. I then installed Openssh.
    3. Then I have setup the Port forwarding on the router to point to my ssh port (change from 22).
    4. I tried to ping, the domain name from NO-IP with no response.
    What I want to ask is... is there any better way of doing this?
    I dont need a desktop access, simple ssh should do for now.
    Thank You
    Gopi

    OK, I have solved this by this process. Will work only if the router supports the DynDNS. I am assuming that you have created a DynDNS account, its free for 2 domains. I also had to make my computer use STATIC IP from my router, just specify any IP address outside the DHCP range.
    1. On the router, add the details about the DynDNS account. On my Belkin Router, I had to go to Firewall -> DDNS -> DynDNS and give the details and also enable it.
    2. By doing the above step, we don't have to install the client for DynDNS.
    3. On the router again, setup the port forwarding, again (on my Belkin Router) go to Firewall -> Virtual Servers -> Add the IP and the port numbers, I had to use the same number for both the incoming and the private port, though for other routers the number can differ?
    4. On the computer, I installed the openssh and then changed the login port to the one specified in the router for forwarding.
    5. Make the router and ssh logins as safe as possible. I understand that opening the router is not safe so I have to warn you.
    I can now login using my DynDNS domain name from anywhere woohoo!

  • FLV image falls behind audio

    Hi all,
    I have a client who wants video with an alpha channel overlaying other images in an iPad application.
    AFAIK this can only be done with FLV video files but the video files have pretty poor performance in the sense that often the audio starts and after a bit the image tries to catch up by increasing the framerate or skipping frames.
    The videos are really short (3 to 5 seconds) and have a datarate of approx. 500kbps (onMetaData shows 500). Using an app called System Status I notice the CPU (ipad 2) reaches about 60-75% load when playing the video.
    Does anyone know how to prevent the lag or know of another neat trick to display video with an alpha channel?
    [edit]
    Same thing happens (a tiny bit less?) with videodatarate==256.
    Not really statistical but lower CPU load when playing the video seems to correlate with better playback.
    Thanks in advance,
    Manno

    Thanks, Ill give it a try today and let'cha know. The article is quite interesting. :)

  • Why does my sound when watching a movie in itunes fall behind?

    Im running Windows 7 64bit and when I watch movies in iTunes, the sound starts running slow.  It gets so bad that it starts cutting out.  If I pause it and hit play again, it goes right for a minute and then starts over again.  Thoughts?

  • Why does my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit taskbar fall behind my Firefox 3.6.8? Any fixes?

    I am running Firefox 3.6.8 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Quite often, and for no consistent reason, Firefox will move itself in front of the Windows taskbar (which I have set to auto-hide). My fixes are to "Restore Down" Firefox and click on the taskbar to move it back in front, or shut down Firefox and relaunch it. I read on another forum that this is a known bug, however I am unable to find any information regarding this problem on this forum. I have Firefox set to auto-update and I did not have this problem until I upgraded to Firefox 3.6.8.

  • OC4J / OAS 11g - What is the story behind the release?

    We are heavily investing in the Java framework known as Seam which is heavily Java 1.5 reliant. As you're probably aware, 1.4 compatibility was added to OAS as of 10.1.3; meanwhile, the OC4J11 has been in technology preview for over a year. With Oracle's acquisition of BEA and other things - does anyone know what the story is behind 11g AS? Will we ever see it? Will Oracle simply re-brand BEA's products as their own? Oracle is quickly falling behind the Java development/deployment gap; how much longer is OC4J11 going to be a "preview" before they give it the go-ahead for a release?
    Thanks.

    You can also check thread Re: OC4J 11 / JDeveloper 11g Production Release? - Oracle Support has replied to me that Fusion Middleware 11g that contains OC4J 11g is "still not ready to be released".

  • How Long Will Arch last?

    Hi, my question here is not to ridicule (or otherwise designed to offend anyone) but one of concern. Many distributions have a viable economic model which helps ensure that the distro can survive (Fedora is one prime example). The fact that Fedora has the backing of Red Hat means that it is almost always asured funding. Ubuntu is also moving in this general direction (although their model does not seem as reliable as Red Hat's yet.) What gurrantee do we have that Arch can last for many decades to come? The Arch devs are real people with real jobs. As far as I know they do not actually get and money from Arch Linux. What sustains Arch ( pays for servers etc.) Is it simply donations? Can Arch survive soley off of donations?
    What are your thoughts and ideas do you have on how to make Arch a self sustaining distro while also keeping it free? Finally if Arch falls apart what would you do?
    THIS IS HYPOTHETICAL THIS IN NO MEANS IMPLIES THAT ARCH IS GOING UNDER ANY TIME SOON!
    ( I would also like to take this time to conragulate the Arch devs for coming this far and thank them for all their work it is much appreciated.)

    Gullible Jones wrote:... There's also Unununium (no kernel, damned if I know how!) ...
    Read the FAQ (Introduction page) for more info about Unununium:
    http://unununium.org/introduction
    Something interesting:
    On what platforms does Unununium run?
    The latest plan is to implement Unununium as a Linux userspace process. Linux is a stable, available, well documented program which eliminates most of the mundane, uncreative aspects of usual OS development such as writing hardware drivers. It also provides an easy mode of execution, with a developed debugger such as gdb, and fast boot times, since there is no need for a full hardware reboot. This makes development much easier.
    Running on Linux has disadvantages as well. Probably most significantly, some things are slower. For a slower speed in execution, we get a faster speed in development. Some day it would be nice to reduce overhead, but that's something that will wait until there is something running.
    For some reason or another, this choice of platform leads people to question if Unununium can really be an OS. Of course, it really depends on how "OS" is defined. Unununium is an environment and a design common to all programs which depend on it, and in this sense might be considered an OS.

  • Audio & Video fall out of synch (movies, television, video podcasts) on  iTunes 10.4

    I have twice downloaded and installed the 64bit version of iTunes 10.4 running on the latest version of Windows 7. Whenever I play a video podcast, movie, or television show using iTunes, the voice and video get completely out of synchronization. One seems to fall behind the other and they never resynchronize. To check to see if I have file damage, I have played the same media using Quicktime and the problem does not occur. The problems seem completely localized to iTunes. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

    I have the same problem and there does not appear to be a fix.
    I am done with iTunes!!!
    I have a lot of money invested in content and I can't play it - drives me crazy!

  • Is arch linux safe to be connected to the net just after install?

    Is it secured enough to be connected to the net after install and all updates applied or do I have to do some additional configuration to make harden it?

    IMHO every home computer should be connected to a recent and good name brand NAT router.  Even if you only have one computer, I still recommend running it behind a good router.
    With the default /etc/rc.conf file, there are only four daemons started at boot up.  If you put your out of the box Arch install behind a properly optioned NAT router, you should be safe for E-mail, browsing, messaging, downloading Arch updates, etc.  After that it's up to you to use some common sense about what web sites you visit.
    Here is a good tutorial on NAT routers.  If you are interested in computer security, it is a good read.  While you are at that site, you can go to ShieldsUp, click on proceed, then in the blue box, click on "All Service ports".  This will probe the first 1056 ports and hopefully all your ports will be green and you get a "TrueStealth" rating.
    If I turn on additional daemons, such as SAMBA or SSH, then I take a couple of additional precautions.  These extra precautions aren't really necessary as long as you aren't doing any port forwarding on your router, but I tend to be on the paranoid side when it comes to security.  Since I use Gnome, I install the Firestarter firewall.  I know it isn't under development anymore, but since iptables hasn't changed since then, does it really matter?  You also have to use a work around to start the GUI, but that is easy enough.  gksu dbus-launch firestarter does the trick.  Set up the firewall so that the smb service (SAMBA) and the ssh service only allow computers on your home network.  Anything external to your network is not allowed.  Then I use the /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files to only allow computers on my home network.  That should be good enough for a home network.
    Now, if you want to open up ports and services that "Listen" to the world, such as Apache, mail servers, etc, then that is a whole new can of worms that is currently beyond my capabilities.

  • Popupmenu & JComboBox shows up behind JInternalFrame on glasspane

    Till Java 6 update 12 we used setLightWeightPopupEnabled on the popupmenus and JComboBoxes to make them appear on the toplevel when showing the glasspane. The situation is as followed:
    - A Swing application
    - Over the Swing application is a glasspane (extends JPanel)
    - Added on the glasspane is a JInternalFrame (with on it components like a JPanel)
    - When clicking with right mouse button, a popupmenu shows up. When using setLightWeightPopupEnabled it works perfectly
    But when Java 6 update 12 was released, the popupmenu and JComboBox popup are shown behind the JInternalFrame (but above the glasspane).
    SUN made some adjustments in the system. Does anyone knows how I can solve the problem as described above?

    I made a simple code example which simulates the problem. The combobox popup falls behind the JInternalFrame. Another strange effect is when you try to resize the JInternalFrame, the JInternalFrame is closed.
