Is BI Beans/Oracle OLAP For Real?
Sequence of Events:
1. New install of 9.2.0.2 and patch w DW template
2. Run catpatch.sql
3. Install BIBeans catalog
4. Install BIBDEMO
5. Test BIBDEMO w Jdev- successful
6. Create dimensions, cube from an existing star schema
7. Create BI Designer for existing star schema - failure with message "Unable to Initialize Query Builder"
8. Ran cwm2_olap_metadata_refresh.mr_refresh, commit - no fix.
9. Tried to run BIBEANS demo again - NOW, IT'S BROKEN - got the infamous "OLAP catalog not valid" message
10. BI Beans is dead again
This may be the most fragile technology I have encountered. Is anybody out there using this stuff in production?!?!?!?
Hi Rich,
There appears to be a problem with the latest schema you have added. The OLAP catalog is a single source repository for all OLAP metadata. This makes it easier to manage (configure, backup etc) all metadata for all your OLAP application. However, it is possible for applications to place the OLAP catalog in an unusable state. The removal of the offending schema will resolve the problem and all other schemas will then function correctly again. So if you remove your new schema, run CWM2_OLAP_METADATA_REFRESH.MR_REFRESH, BIBDEMO should work.
The next step is to determine how/what/which component is not working within the new schema. Looking at your previous postings you are obviously an experienced Oracle database person and seem to understand how to use OEM to create and define cubes/dimensions etc. So I am not quite sure what has happened with the latest schema. Can I suggest you email me directly ([email protected]) and may be we can could discuss this over the phone so I can get a better understanding of your application and your database design.

How to create a link to base oracle olap express(ODBC DATA source Name)
hello,
How can I create a datasource name, because I want to connect to Express base with Business Objects.
thank you for your helpExpress does not support ODBC access, it only supports a proprietary interface called SNAPI. There was a way to connect and pass data backwards and forwards using VB but that was about it. No ODBC connectivity.
If you want to access multi-dimensional data using Business Objects I would recommend upgrading from Express to Oracle OLAP 10gR2. There might be licensing issues here so I would talk to your Oracle account manager first because I am not sure customers can migrate from Express to Oracle OLAP for free.
Once you have moved your data from Express to OLAP 10gR2 (the steps to do this are all in the manual and it should be a painless process) then you can use a utility from Business Objects to create the required relational views over your OLAP cubes and dimensions. This will allow you to access your multi-dimensional data via BO's Webi client. I think the utility to create the views can be provided free of charge from BO, however, I think you need to have access to their support website to download it. But check with your BO account manager.
Hope this helps

Our BI database is a pure star-schema (no snow-flake) and we use OWB to define it and load (ETL) from the source systems. We also define hand-coded materialized views for data aggregation.
Now we are thinking of using Oracle OLAP for:
- pre-aggregation
- forecasting analysis
- performance
Our db is small right now but we expect it to grow into terabytes.
- Would OLAP server system sit on top of our current BI or would we have to build it one time from the data in BI db and discard the contents of BI database later?
- From docs, it seems ROLAP is more suited for large dbs than MOLAP. With our db, would it be feasible for us to use MOLAP?
- Does ROLAP requires definining materialized view? If yes, how is it different than our current BI database?
- Can OLAP sit on our source database (OLTP db)? or does the source data come from a star schema?
As you can see, I am unable to understand what is the best way to implement OLAP server in our situation. Is there a "best practice" or "definitive guide" that I can refer to?
Any related info. is more than welcome.
Prashant.Prashant, DW environments are generally organized into multiple areas, some of which you've identified:
1. Source systems which provide data for the data warehouse
2. The "data warehouse" itself - a central repository for all the transactions, etc. collected from the source systems. Main function is to STORE all of the data in a clean, consistent manner
3. Possibly multiple datamarts that organize the base DW data into specific subsets that are meaningful to the end users. Can be ROLAP, MOLAP, HOLAP, etc.
Each of these tiers has different goals, which usually means they need separate architectures and/or hardware:
1. Don't put BI systems on top of your OLTP system...if a user writes a run-away query, it can bring down your transaction processing systems.....
2. DW can either be in 3nf or dimensional form, but its main job is to capture the low level transactions and make sure they conform to standards (including data quality, etc.) Users SOMETIMES run queries directly against DW tables, but once the DW starts getting big (i.e. terabytes) you probably don't want users hitting directly against it
3. OLAP datamarts are almost always in dimensional form, but only contain subsets of data from the DW. These are designed to hit very specific business problems, and typically are at a much higher level of detail than the DW.
Hope this helps. DON'T PUT YOUR DW or BI cubes on the OLTP system!!!

Are there any Oracle OLAP ODI Knowledge Modules for Oracle Olap 11g ?
Hi guys, wasnt sure where to post this so I put it here and the ODI forum
Does anybody know when Oracle OLAP Knowledge Modules, will be available for Oracle Olap 11g. It appears that the knowledge modules released with Oracle Data Integrator 10.1.3.5, currently only work with Oracle Olap 10g...
If there is no timeline, does anybody know of work around to get ODI reverses working on Analytical Workspaces built in Oracle Olap 11g
Thank you
Richard
Edited by: RichardSmith on May 15, 2009 11:51 AMRaise a service request with Oracle Support (Metalink) for your system slow issue. May be, they will recommend you the workarounds for the issues which are not yet available for 11g in the form of Patches.

OBIEE Vs MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP
Hi Gurus,
We need to present to customer a comparison between OBIEE 10.1.3.4 and SIMBA´S "MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP" to attack OLAP Cubes in 11gR2.
Of course OBIEE is more powerful and complete, but technically, we would like to know which OBIEE capabilities (apart from ibots, scheduling, hability of representing information) are not available or cant´t be utilized from SIMBA´s Sw.
Are there known limitations of MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP?
Is it truth that in the new OBIEE release the Microsoft Office add in is going to be more powerfull or is it going to remain the same?
Thanks in advance for your answers,
Best Regards,
Nch
Edited by: [email protected] on 10-jun-2010 10:14Yes. There are a lot of performance work done for the production release.

Do we need Oracle OLAP Engine for OBIEE
Hi experts
Do we need Oracle Olap Engine for OBIEE..
Thanks in advance
Reagrds
FrndsShort answer: No.
Long answer: No. -
Everything on the system is a fresh installation.
1.Oracle 9iR2 Database, I chose the data warehousing option.
After installation I checked to make sure that everything could be started.
2. I then proceeded to install the Oracle OLAP patch 9.2.0.1.0a patch for windows. After navigating to the 2499827 directory.
I typed OPatch\opatch apply as stated.
It started then said "Peforming Pre patch installation checks"
At the end of this
I recieved a message saying
"The following required components were not located or have the wrong versions
oracle.options.olap"
I guess it was to right to assume that the patch process failed, particularly as don't see any olap\admin directory in my %ORACLE_HOME%. The olap directory is there.
Can somebody please give me some pointers. Is there something I have missed with regards to setting up Oracle 9iR2 thats preventing me from patching it.
Thank you
Richard SmithIf you are missing the admin directory under your olap directory your initial Oracle9i Database Release 2 installation appears to be the culprit. Again, be sure to install the Enterprise Edition with the Data Warehouse database configuration. Also, make sure your Global Database Name and SID are all set up and running fine. Perhaps you installed over a previous ORACLE_HOME? Be sure to follow these steps for a proper Oracle removal:
1. Terminate the Oracle9i Database and its processes
Go to the Services applet in Control Panel and Stop all running Oracle processes
2. Run OUI to uninstall your previous version of Oracle9i with OLAP Option, then Exit
Choose 'Deinstall Products...'
Select the products you need to remove, then click 'Remove...'
Then click 'Exit' when done
3. For a clean installation remove the following directories and registry entries (if they still exist):
Directories:
<your_drive>:\oracle\ora92
<your_drive>:\oracle\oradata
<your_drive>:\oracle\admin
<your_drive>:\Program Files\Oracle

Is it possible to use (even with a reduced functionality) BI beans without OLAP (i.e. just using sql, more or less how Discoverer does) ?
Tia
TullioI think so. Let's see a wizard-made java client code:
// qm can be null which implies that we are running with a config
// file that doesn't specify a connection to an OLAP source. We
// will use a static data source in that case.
In general, you can make your own subclass and use it instead of OLAP-connected Query -
OBIEE and Oracle OLAP Value Based Hierarchies
Hi there...
I have a value based dimension built on Oracle OLAP and want to map it on OBIEE Administration tool.
I've been using the above link as reference:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/olap_biee/CreateBIEEMetadata.htm
There's no option to import from Oracle Multi-dimensional Database. Either to import/configure the view created by OLAP as an Unballanced or Ragged Dimension.
I also checked this example, but it uses ESSBASE as the multi-dimensional source....
http://www.rittmanmead.com/2008/08/27/ragged-hierarchy-handling-in-obiee/
How to map this Ragged Dimension created in OLAP workspace in OBIEE? Any suggestions or directions will be highly appreciated...
Thanks in advance
MarcosMark and others,
You can create OLAP_TABLE views with level columns on top of value-based hierarchies. BI Beans used to do that too behind the scenes in Discoverer Plus OLAP. If you trace the Discoverer session, where you are querying data from Value-based hierarchies, you will see that it also generates OLAP_TABLE views with level columns in it.
So the question is how to do it. Internally, even for Value-based hierarchies Oracle OLAP keeps track of the "depth" of each value by using a structure called GID_DIMENSION (i.e., Grouping Dimension). Here is an example of a view on top of a value-based hierarchy (CFC_ACCT_GAPP) for RPT_ACCOUNT dimension. You have to know how "deep" your value-based hierarchy is.
Similar kind of a thing is done by OLAP View Generator application, which I never use - since I always prefer to define my own OLAP_TABLE views.
This kind of a view can then be used in the RPD of OBIEE.

YounisI think you forgot grant OLAP_USER, D4OPUB role to younis
Make sure D4OSYS user is created. D4OSYS is the owner when the Discoverer OLAP catalog is created.
Make sure the OLAPSYS user and OLAP_USER/OLAP_DBA role is created in order to grant D4OPUB. You might need to run $ORACLE_HOME\olap\admin\olap.sql to create those accounts eventhough you have OLAP option installed.
I found directly install latest Oracle database patchset (10.1.0.4) and then create database doesn't have those accounts automatically, unless you are upgrade from 10.1.0.3.
Hope this can help -
