Is de-interlaced always worse than interlaced watching on TV ? Or do I do something wrong ?

I am working with FCP X, using interlaced material (1080i) shot with a Panasonic TM900 Cam.
So the original footage is AVCHD 17Mbps.
Typically I apply the following workflow to export the film:
- Export from FCP X timeline without any conversion as master-file (i.e. ProRes 422)
- Process through Compressor 4 to h.264 Quicktime movie with average bitrate of 20Mbps keeping the orginal resolution and framerate (25 fps, 1080 res)
      a) with all frame controls switched off -> results in a 1080i movie
      b) with frame controls switched on for de-interlacing, using "better" or "best" filter and Output fields "progressive" -> 1080p movie
In case a), when watching the film on the media player of a Samsung LCD TV the output quality is extremely good and has no visible difference to the original AVCHD file (that I watch by plugging the camera via HDMI to the TV)
But: in case b) all scenes with fast movements are much worse in quality (played with the same media palyer as well as when playing with Apple TV3). Moving objects are no more sharp and there are "block artefacts" around fast moving objects. Same appears for scenes with fast zoom. Quality is really visibly worse compared to the original AVCHD.
The effect does not change when I use "best" filter settings.
I am now wondering:
Is a de-interlaced 1080p film "per defintion" worse in quality compared to the 1080i film, when being watched on a TV ?
For me this sounds strange, as I understood that at the end also my Samsung TV does some kind of "on-the-fly" deinterlacing, as the LCD screen is of course progressive.
Or do I do something wrong ?
Happy for any advice and help !

You sure that the original footage was shot interlaced? The information I found on the camera is that it shoots progressive.
Hard to generalize about what looks better – interlaced or progressive – except that interlaced can look pretty dodgy with computer play-back. Otherwise, much depends on the material that was shot.
Bear in mind that de-interlacing per se throws away half the information. Frame Controls tries to compensate for that loss. Going from Pro Res to h,264 is a major compression step by itself; adding more filters in our attempts to improve results also can increase the possibilities for errors. Maybe that's what happened here.

  • Turning footage into Progressive rather than Interlaced.

I would like to export a sequence in progressive rather than interlaced frame sequence to achieve a more filmic effect. What I'd like to know is:
    1. How do you do it? I normally export to a straight 'Make Movie' Quicktime export.
    2. Does it increase file size substantially?
    3. Can you see the difference between progressive and interlaced on a computer LCD monitor?
    Thanks,
    Lulworth

I'm not aware of any way in FCE to convert material from interlaced to progressive. You can deinterlace material, but I don't think you can convert it to progressive.
If I were going to do it, I'd use MPEG Streamclip to convert the material before importing it into FCE. Keep in mind, however that FCE only supports 720p progressive and yes the file sizes will be larger because you actually have to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec, and I think 720P AIC runs about 25GB per hour. (DV is only about 13 GB per hour).
You might see some difference between interlaced & progressive video on a computer LCD, but I don't think it will be much different.
I'd suggest looking at Graeme Nattress' excellent Film Effects filters to achieve more of a 'film look'.
What is your goal in trying to do this? (Not just that you want a film look, but what is your target - DVD, TV, HDTV, web video, etc?)

  • Premiere Elements 8 is worse than useless to me

I have to admit, I can't explain why I'm still trying to make Premiere Elements 8 work.  I should have given up and moved to another software program by now.  I've been on the phone twice with the Customer Service group in India, for over half an hour at a time.  Each time they insist they've solved my problem, yet it keeps getting worse.  Now, I'm not only having uncontrolled and unexplained system crashes, but hours and hours of work are now corrupted and totally wasted.
Here is a list of the problems I'm having:
    1.  The primary problem is that Premiere Elements 8 crashes and shuts down in the middle of work with no warning or notice.  It happens after about 3-5 minutes of using the software, so I've gotten in the habit of saving my work every time I do anything, no matter how small.  Needless to say, you can chart my progress with a sundial.  Tedious does not do the process justice.
    2.  When I save the work, I will get a Project Save Error. It tells me to save to a new location.  Of course, it won't let me do that, so I have to exit the program without saving my most recent work.  Again, this happens about every 3-5 minutes.
    3.  Occasionally, when I'm working with a timeline, as I move the cursor up to the menus at the top of the screen, if I am selecting the File or Edit menu, the timeline will scroll left on its own - if I move the cursor off of the Edit or File menu, the scrolling stops.
    4.  When I am working on a timeline, I will get a "System Memory Running Very Low" warning, along with advice to save immediately and proceed with caution.  Of course, when I get that warning, it is already too late, as any attempt to save the work causes the program to crash.
    5.  Today, we've seen a new thing, and it's completely destroyed two entire projects.  When I try to open projects I've previously worked on, large sections of them appear as blood red with the words "Media Offline" in a number of languages.  These red sections appear not only on the organizer, but in the timeline as well.  It's as if Premiere Elements 8 can't find the media I copied into the timeline even though I've been working on the project for days and have not moved the media from the folder where it always sits.
Saving work after every task - no matter how small - makes doing anything painfully slow and mind-numbingly tedious, but at least it worked - until today.  Now, hours and hours of work have been rendered absolutely wasted.  I've never encountered a software program with so many fundamental problems.  It's almost as if it was created by amateurs.  I can honestly say that it does nothing well.
As I said, I've been on the phone twice now with the problem solving group in India, and while they are very nice and courteous, they've done nothing to solve the problems.  In fact, the problems have become worse, although I can't say it's because of anything they've done.  Both times, they've assured me that they've fixed the problems, and the software works fine while I am on the phone with them - for about 2 or 3 minutes.  But then, it works fine for me for the same length of time.
To be honest, I'm not sure why I would call them back.  I'll spend an hour clicking on tabs only to be assured that my problems have been solved. Then, 5 minutes later I'm dealing with the same situation - or worse.
I've tried every solution listed on-line for the crashes.  I have the 8.01 update, I have the latest video drivers, I've done all of the steps it recommends.  Every day that I use the software, it performs worse than the day before.
I'm not sure why I'm writing this - I think I've reached the end of my rope.  I doubt these problems can be fixed - maybe I just have a defective copy, who knows.  But, I am very close to demanding my money back and saying goodbye to Adobe products for the future.

  • Video output quality worse than AppleTv 1

Anyone else who owns an atv1 found video looks worse?
I'm not talking about actual video playback but the video output on 2
AppleTV1 looked great through my plasma even though it's not full HD
1080p over hdmi on 1 scaled by the plasma consistently looked best, with crisp but smooth edges to text and GUI.
Atv2 720p over hdmi looks consistently worse - it all looks oversharpened and over contrasty, with text in particular looking very jagged as well as the spinning timer wheel looking pixellated now
Watching a slideshow there seemed to be visible artefacts as some images moved or scaled whereas atv1 just looked silky smooth
Maybe the current GUI text and icons are not as smooth, maybe less antialiasing, poorer quality gpu
Maybe my plasma downscales 720p worse than 1080p - I need to check on the full HD set in another room but first impressions are not that good
Video playback seems strangely artificial too, almost as though the frame rate has been sped up slightly
Weird as the set should handle 50/60Hz without issue

So a few days in it's growing on me.
There's definitely something different about menu graphics but actual video quality for playback is excellent though I'm not sure it's not dropping/catching up frames at times.
I've watched some HD movie trailers and they look excellent.
Video navigation is considerably improved over ATV1, with FF / RW actually working reasonably well when they didn't before over the same connection. Changing chapters gives immediate starts and buffering seems considerably quicker - at least some of this must be due to newer hardware.
I don't like the top level menu much and preferred the older system but you can pretty much stay in Computers to watch own content.
Video playlists don't work properly which is poor but it took ages to get them enabled on ATV1.
There are many glitches but hopefully they'll get ironed out over time.

  • Is my iPad 2 screen dead, or is it worse than that?

My iPad 2 has suddenly stopped responding. I had put it to sleep by closing the cover, and when I opened it, the screen was black. There have been no drops or other obvious mistreatment.
So I held down the power button, ostensibly to shut it down. No response. Held down the button again, ostensibly to start it up: no response. Tried that many times with same result. Charged the iPad overnight. Still no response (and no little chime sound that usually happens when I plug in to AC power).
iTunes can see the iPad, so maybe the screen is dead. But with the absence of all responses of any kind, I'm wondering whether it's worse than that.
I'm running iOS 7.0.4, so I suppose I could update to 7.0.6 and see if that helps, but since updates can be dodgy, I thought I'd save that as a last resort. (And yes, my AppleCare coverage is history.)
    Any thoughts?

Ralph Landry1      Maryland Re: Is my iPad 2 screen dead, or is it worse than that? Apr 14, 2014 6:11 PM (in response to gyandev) Placing your iPad in recovery mode erases all content and settings, why you would do that in your case is a total mystery.  You lose everything doing that.
There are alot of problems that could have caused you to have to do this. And no you do not loose everything is you have made regular backups.
    Here are some reasons
    1) itunes makes a new update for your device, there system is so overloaded with people downloading it that some people who downloaded it our missing packets of information this causes an incorect installation and leads to many pieces of hardware malfunctioning
2)usb conection will sometimes turn on and off during some updates, the program itunes dosent seem to check to make sure all the information went through to complete the installation
when either 1 or 2 occurs it is typically in my expereice that a traditional plug it into itunes and do a recovery will not work, you need to bypass several glitchs the IOS update has caused, which may appear to be hard ware glichs IE battery, screen or even after every attempt the update will just stop.
Their are several key components that make up electronic devices
Ram and catch, they require power or electricty to store data, you either need to drain or remove the battery (sometimes residual charge is left in electronic devices... or you may be able to by pass it or in some situations cause the device to ignore the miss writen data.
The battery may say bad on a basic diagnostic test that apple does, but in fact its perfectly fine.
another piece is the storage media, flash and rotaional drives do not need power to store information only to read/write. Individual sectors will go bad over time, and sometimes falsh data that wasn't caught before this point will be written here.
some batters actually have memory,, HDD and storage media and cpu's all have catch which may need to be wiped clean to make a device functioning the method for doing this is differnt for every piece of hardware and sometimes you do not need to take it apart to do it.
There is also ram, which again needs power to store data and will also make bad sectors over time..
if there your device is fully functioning but seems to be a bit slower/ not as good than when you first recieved it, you may need to consider a complete reset. You might notice when your done that the ram size is different that the storage drive has decreased, those are some of the bad sectors that the computer with its long use produced.
In most cases where there is some type of glich that cannot be solved simply by plugin it into Itunes, you might just need to do this. There are several methods posted, and i have tried them all, and most of the time when i needed them they do not work... I had to think, about this..
I needed to do a full recovery, itunes will crash half way through/ will not do the recovery, i need to provide power while placing the device in DFU mode(what i call a hard rest because its like hitting the master reset), because there is a problem/ glich when i try it pluged into a computer I need to use land power, than i need to conect it to itunes..
IT always works, the other methods do not account for the multitude of malfunctions an operating system can cause. This helps to ignore any catch problems, when you conect to itunes it will finish it without a hitch. than you can place all your apps, photos songs ect back in there.
I have had to do this for my own IOS device as well as several others. I typically do this even for random people or i tell them how to do this. Most of them come to me after being poorly disapointed with what the apple tech said.. for me its like if i took my car in for inspection and they said we had to replace the head piston, headmanifold ect, when whats wrong is just a loose wire...
This method should be done prior to doing any expensive fix's as some of the problems you have "fixed" where never really there..
when i was 8 my farther gave me a SCSi hdd that the technitions at his work couldnt fix/ get to work.. He though i would take it apart and see how it worked.. I read the manual, and power scematic, and i came up with my own fix.. plug a jumper into the - and the + jumper to clear the catch while power was going through.. it worked I had a working scsi.. that thing was bigger than an airport extreme curently on the market. I have always had the ability to trouble shoot sense i was alittle boy... I have fixed garmiin GPS as well i wish they still had the physical power switch and not the analog (it was so much easer to reboot them... I was an aircraft maintainer, i have fixed several other computer problems network issuse, hard ware and so on.. Although i have never taken classes in any of it i have learned on my own, and i understand how the device work rather than being told steps to fix it I can find solution where others cannot because i know how they work.. I think that is better than any colledge grad with no reall world experience in true problem solving.

  • Camera Raw 6.1pre - scrolling performance worse than in CR6 for me

    Hi
I like the quality of the new processing in CR6, but the performance  is much worse than in CS4/CR5.x. This is especially annoying when you  try to scroll in a Raw file using the hand-tool. But then I saw the 6.1 prerelease announced containing "performance enhancements designed to improve the responsiveness  of the controls and the scrolling mechanism relative to Camera Raw 6.0". Happily I immediately decided to give the new prerelease a try...
But unfortunately I don't see a performance gain when scrolling in CR6.1pre. It is actually worse for me in 6.1 than it was in 6.0. It is now almost impossible to scroll out to the corners of a Raw file using the hand-tool. It fells like it get stuck. And I know never know if I have actually have reached a corner or it is just stuck somewhere on the way out to it. So now if I want to go to a corner, I find it much easier to zoom out by double clicking the hand, and then zoom into the corner by clicking the magnify tool in the corner.
But the new lens correction is great ! :-)

Oh?  Was not aware of this; and, come to think of it, I cannot see the reasoning behind not always opening in the faster/better mode.
    Or am I missing something?

  • Performance of Standard much worse than Premium?

After recently using up my 60 days of the premium trial, I decided I didn't need any of the additional features of premium and decided to purchase a license for standard instead.  Everything went smoothly and once I'd upgraded to the latest AIRSDK, I was able to point to my previous workspace and all my projects built and ran fine, straight away.
Everything was good until I went to install one of the projects onto my Android phone (16GB Nexus 4).  With the premium trial, I'd gotten accustomed to this only taking a few seconds for simple debugging, and a little longer for a release build.  Since I've come to standard this is taking *much* longer, as in 2-4 minutes on average.
I'm still within my cancellation period for this, so I *can* take the decision to get premium instead, but the financial hit is... unwanted.  If it is a case that the performance of standard is plain and simply just *worse* than premium, I may choose to go back to that, but I'd like to be 100% and get confirmation of that, before doing so.

    From here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flash-builder/faq.html
"Why use Flash Builder Premium Edition over Flash Builder Standard Edition?
Flash Builder 4.7 Premium adds professional testing tools, including profilers, network monitoring, an automated testing framework, integration with Flex unit testing, and command-line build support"
The only thing I could think of would be the command-line support. If Premium builds with the command line and Standard version doesn't that might explain the speed differences - but that seems very odd for them to do. If you deactivate your key I think it restarts your trial and if you restart Flash Builder it should load in Premium mode so you could try that and see if it builds faster. (You can always reactivate your standard key later with no issues since you just deactivated it before this)

  • Edge signal bars are worse than 3G

    Hello there,
I just purchased my 8GB iPhone 3G from Rogers few days ago. I've been using the 3G for a while and my connection is excellent, I always get 5 bars and not seen it drop once yet. I knew that the 3G drains my battery down so I decided to turn it off and run on EDGE network.
I was surprised because my edge never stayed at 5 bars since the time I've tried it. it always began fluctuating from 5 to 2 and usually just stays at around 3 bars. I've also done a restore on my phone hoping it would fix it, but unfortunately it did not. For most people it's the opposite like the 3G is worse than EDGE.
So I was wondering if its a hardware problem or is 3G where I live seems to support the iPhone much better than EDGE? So should I keep it on instead of EDGE then even though it would drain the battery quicker?

I just switched to EDGE and I have full 5 bars but don't know if that's generally the case. I'm rarely on EDGE, since at home, school or work, there's WiFi and otherwise I use 3G.
Btw, Roger's 3G coverage has significantly improved over the past two months, as initially it was so unreliable I was on EDGE pretty much all the time.

  • The quality of built-in camera on macbook pro with retina display is far worse than any other mac. Why?

I just got the new macbook pro with retina display like a week ago and I've been noticing that the quality of the built-in camera on it is so bad.
It's even worse than my 2009 iMac or my sister's 2012 13" macbook pro. I don't get why this is a facetime HD built-in camera when i can obviously see that is not even near HD. Or is it just my computer. Do i have to bring it to the apple store??

it's advertised 720p so yes it is the same as all the other MBP.  it may just be the resolution of your monitor is stretching the pixels.  Don't worry about bringing it to the apple store.

    USELESS ONLINE HELP FACILITIES
For all the amazing productivity aids that APPLE offers the world I have to report that their online support service is worse than useless and has recently been the source of immense time wasting and irritation.
Incident 1. Since many months attempts to download new and updated APPs produced a response – Apple ID Disabled. I had no time to consult an APPLE Store due to work in distant lands. When I finally visited yesterday I was told that as my IPAD has been reported as stolen, and APPLE in its wisdom had blocked its usage! I am not sure how they became so misinformed and nobody every advised me while with a few swift moves APPLE could have located me by email address or SKYPE.
Incident 2. Once the above anomaly had been fixed I tried to down load a newspaper and diligently input my address, credit card number and personal data. Repeatedly I was advised that my Credit Card was invalid and my postal code was incorrect! Really!
I was left to guess that having moved from UK to the US I should have advised APPLE! Not being told of this requirement brought about a second visit to APPLE Store in the same day to waste both mine and their time with a routine anomaly. How parochial in the context of a globalized world!
In each case I tried to resolve the issues using online access to a help line and by calling by phone at the numbers on the APPLE Website. In each of four separate occasions I diligently went through the routine and  ended up with a message that thanked me for contacting Apple followed by a polite ‘Good Bye’!
In desperation I went to an Apple Store for the second time in a day as it is close to where I live when I am not working. On both occasions I was courteously attended to by Apple Staff.
However, my work is usually far away from the US and it is generally many thousands of miles to the nearest Apple Store therefore online help is viewed as imperative if one is to resolve issues away from home.
Why can Apple not provide a clearly marked EMAIL address and Telephone number at a Help Desk with real people to respond to requests for help? It would cost nothing in relative terms and might restore my high level of anti-APPLE sentiment that these two recent events have provoked.
    Peter Hanney
    Miami, Fl.

Why can Apple not provide a clearly marked EMAIL address and Telephone number at a Help Desk with real people to respond to requests for help?
If that is your question, the answer is at the bottom right of this web page. It is clearly marked "Contact Us" and is the best way, really the only way, to contact Apple.
If there were a publicly posted email address for concerns such as yours, it would be quickly filled with spam in about three minutes, thereby becoming instantly useless to you and everyone else. Apple would need to change it hourly, if not more often. That is also the reason you ought not to post your name, location, and what appears to be your iPad's serial number on this publicly viewable website.
Apple does not respond here and I can find no other questions for your fellow Apple users to answer.

If I host with Business Catalyst, will search engines fine me any "better" or Worse than go daddy?
I am new to Muse and love it! Not sure if the hosting site matters one way or the other.

Liam has some great points. Some other things to consider is that google (just talking one search engine at the moment) more than likely know what a BC site looks like and is made of and would know the best ways to index it assuming you use some of the features of BC and not just straight up HTML.
Godaddy is straight up HTML so as far as indexing goes I think BC has an advantage as it is a known system much like wordpress.
As far as IP blocks, bad neighbours, etc only google will know that information and it's not easy to say which is better.
For example if someone on BC spam's there website everywhere or engages in dodgy SEO practises, spambots etc. Their site is going to be pushed down, if you happen to be on the same IP or close to that site you will be in a "bad neighbourhood" and it may affect your site in the short term. This is the case for ANY hosting solution, so take it all with a gain of salt.

  • De-Interlace or leave as Interlaced? (iMovie 6.0.4)

iMac 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion);  Video Editing: Imovie HD6 exported to iDVD;  Camcorders: Canon MVX25i and Canon HV30.  DVDs to be played on modern flat screen televisions.
Although I have been working with iMovie HD6 (6.0.4) and iDVD (7.1.2) for several years, I now want to convert some of my older movies from 4 x 3 aspect ratio to widescreen 16 x 9 ratio.  To do this I'm using MPEG Streamclip which seems to be easy to use and it works for me.  However, I'm confused by the options that are available in the Streamclip DV Exporter - e.g. Should I leave it as an interlaced movie or de-interlace it?  This is the exporter panel that I'm confronted with:-
I would appreciate any advice or help that someone out there could give to me.

    Hi
If You go for a 16x9 DVD - Then:
DVD is as STANDARD - Interlaced SD-Video Quality - AT it's best !
De-interlace will take away every second line in the picture and copy the rest = Less resolution - Yes You'll notice it.
I wouldn't change an interlaced movie at all - but keep it as is to get best possibly playback.

  • Support getting even worse than before

3 days, and support haven't even acknowledged my SR. Does anyone else feel that its getting even worse than it already was?

"Sorry but the analyst is in the US and won't be available for another 6 hours".
Not good enough, I asked for it to be treated by someone in Europe.
Why not propose that someone in Europe looks at it instead of saying that the analyst isn't available? Plus, she said that she'd look and see if they had enough resources to deal with the SR. Sorry but this bs didn't happen 3 or 4 years ago. I can't say to MY clients that Oracle haven't got the resources to fix a problem.
    Good product, bad support.

  • Just Updated to Firefox 26.0...Hanging Worse Than Ever.

I just updated to FireFox 26.0 a few hours ago, and now when I visit a site like Wonkette.com, the browser hangs are worse than ever before...and they were bad before. My browser is hanging (becomes completely unresponsive) minutes at a time before it either loads the page, or tries to load it and I get a script error (which takes more minutes to pop up while the browser's unresponsive) before it loads.
God help you if you go anywhere with an IntenseDatabase commenting system or any kind of embedded video player. I have on no add-ons or plug-ins, so it is not that (and they are all up-to-date, anyway, but that's irrelevant).
No, this is not something solved by going into Safe Mode - the seeming catch-all cure that never works, either - so don't even offer that up as a solution. Thanks.
