Is Disk Utility Working

I routinely run Disk Utility, usually there's no problem.  I ran DU after updating my OS to 10.7.5 - I got a couple pages of disk permission problems.  After correcting permissions I ran DU again, and again a couple pages of problems.  I repeated two more times and it looks like I'm getting the same result and re-solving the same problems.
Is anyone familiar with this result?  Any suggestions?
Thank you,
SC

Hi Steve,
One of the crazy things about Permissions Repair... ignore any reapeated errors/fixes, it's not real.
As long it says Completed you're fine.

  • Does Disk Utility work in FireWire Target Disk Mode?

I have the dreaded "overlapped extent allocation" disk error on my PowerBook G4 FW800, which I discovered when attempting to install Tiger. I can still boot into 10.3.9.
My question: Can I run Disk Utility from my G4 PowerMac (Tiger10.4.7) with my PowerBook in Target Disk Mode? I have seen this mentioned in some discussion threads, but others say it won't work.
Alternatively, is there another way (e.g. ethernet) to connect the two to fix the problem?

    Thank you.
I ran Disk Utility via TDM and it repaired the problem. Luckily, the corrupted files were not important.

  • Disk Utility works for FAT but fails for Mac OS Extended

    Hi Folks,
I have a 2TB WD My Book drive that I am trying to format as Mac OS Extended for Time Machine. Disk Utility will cheerfully format it as FAT (the FAT drive shows up in finder and seems to work fine), but won't format it as Mac OS Extended. I'm trying to figure out whether this is a hardware error, or whether I am doing something wrong.
To format it for Mac OS Extended, I am going into the partition tab, removing the current (FAT) partition, and adding a new Mac OS Extended partition. When I do this, Disk Utility shows the new partition as "grayed out" and it does not mount in Finder.
If I run Verify and Repair, I get the following errors:
Verify and Repair volume “Untitled 1”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid node structure
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Invalid record count
    Invalid B-tree node size
The volume could not be verified completely.
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Am I doing something wrong here, or does this sound more like a hardware failure?
    Thanks!

@kbd1: Yes, if I erase the disk from the erase tab and format it as MS-DOS (FAT) the disk works just fine. If I erase and format it as Mac OS Extended, I get the same errors listed above and it doesn't mount.
@Thomas: Yes, if I set the format to GUID I get the same errors. I've even tried setting up two partitions: one FAT and one GUID and the FAT one mounts and the GUID one doesn’t.
So, from both of your responses it sounds like hardware, which makes sense. What is strange to me is that it works as a FAT drive...

  • Airport Disk Utility not working on Intel mac...

    Ok here's a new one...
I just got a new macBook (intel) to replace my 12inch G4. On the 12inch, Airport Disk Utility worked just fine recognizing my lacie drive hooked up to AEBS. I used a firewire cable to import settings to the intel macbook and that's when things went wrong.
On the new laptop, Airport Disk Utility gives me an alarm chime when I open it and no matter what I do, it won't see the drive. What's more, I can't even get the icon to show up in the menu bar (even though the drive shows up when I check the base station with the airport configuration utility). Whenever I check either one of the boxes, I get an alarm chime.
What's more the airport disk utility still works on the G4.
I've tried resetting the network, reinstalling stuff- I don't know what else to do. I don't know much about networking, but I wonder if importing the settings from the G4 is somehow the culprit or just something to do with it being intel?

Well I fixed this. Get the AirPortBaseStationUpdate2007001.dmg update. I had installed this, but it didn't put in a few items that it should have. Mainly a little application in Core Servies. I used Pacifist to install the Airport Disk Utility again, and then restarted. I no longer got a beep when opening AD Utility, but I had to uncheck "Automatically discover disks" then turn off file sharing on the router, wait for it to restart, then turn file sharing back on, and then open AD Utility after restart and click Auto Discover. It then saw my disks. I also changed the name of the Windows Workgroup, I don't know if that had something to do with it. Good luck!

  • Disk Utility Cannot Be Opened Because Of A Problem

When trying to launch Disk Utility I get the following error message. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm running 10.6.4. Thanks in advance for any help.
Disk Utility cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Disk Utility works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.

How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.

    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • Disk Utility: Restore no longer creates bootable images?

So I have a new hard drive for my macbook, and followed the procedure I used last time of using disk utility restore to write the current hard drive image to the new disk, with the new disk in a USB enclosure.
I have done this before, it creates a bootable copy on the new disk, swap the disks away I go.
This time however the new disk is not bootable. When starting it gets to the grey screen with the rotating white pips then dumps back to a black screen with error messages (like its trying to boot of the network).
Swapping back to the old disk boots just fine, so its a problem with the image written to the new disk by disk utility restore not being bootable.
Is this a known issue? I searched the forum with no answers, and am frustrated that its now working as I have run the image twice now at about 5 hours a go for 100GB of data so I am sure its not the copy. Straight after the copy the original disk has about 10 more files than the new disk that's just been imaged, has their been some update to disk utility in the OS X patches that means it no longer copies some key files?
Note that partition on new disk is GUID as it should be, and I don't want to re-install anything from the install media I want to use make disk utility work as designed.

I found two references that may help:
    A) At http://everythingapple.blogspot.com/2007/11/use-powerpc-mac-to-create-bootable.h tml it says "PowerPC Macs use the Apple Partition Map, but this poses no problem for Intel Macs, even though Intel Macs use the GUID Partition Table. The reverse is not true however. PowerPC Macs cannot boot disks with a GUID Partition Table."
    1. Open up Disk Utility and select your backup drive. Select the "Partition" tab.
    2. Go to the "Options" and choose "Apple Partition Map", which is the partition type necessary for PowerPC Macs.
    B) Carbon Copy Cloner - Red Dot Warning on main screen: "The target volume will not boot this computer because PowerPC Macintoshes cannot boot from USB devices."
Looks like I'll have to install the 2.5" SATA drive into my PowerPC MacMini to upgrade my system volume from 80gb to 320gb.

  • IMac Finder cannot see external hard drive but Disk Utility can

I have a WD external hard drive and it has been attached to my iMac for a year or two.  About two months ago I upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 and hard drive still worked.  Then suddenly about a week ago the iMac no longer sees the external hard drive in Finder.
I have connected the hard drive to the iMac with different USB cables and into different ports and it makes no difference so deduce there is no issues with the cables or the ports.  I have connected the hard drive to an old Macbook and it can see the harddrive and read some of the info but I really need the hard drive attached to the iMac as I store all my music and photos on the external hard drive.
I read another thread and someone asked if you can see the hard drive in Disk Utility.  I tried this and Disk Utility can see the hard drive.
What does this mean?  Any suggestions as to how to get the iMac to see the hard drive so I can access the data on it?
I dont really know how Disk Utility works therefore if that is any help to me.
    thanks

    Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar click Finder > Preferences then select the General tab.
Make sure: External disks is selected.

  • Why can't Disk Utility wipe my old iMac in Target Disk Mode?

I want to donate my old iMac G3 with all my personal data removed.
As all my old start up disks are long gone I went online and followed advice to wipe it remotely. I connected the G3 via FireWire to my 15" MacBook Pro (late 2008, running OSX Lion 10.7.5) and restarted the G3 in Target Disk Mode. I opened Disk Utility, selected the drive (not the iMac partition), selected Erase, renamed the drive and chosen the 7 pass option. And waited...
After leaving it overnight, I awoke to find it was still preparing. I then Skipped that stage (it gave me the option) and left it for 24 hours. It was still skipping, so I had to Force Quit Disk Utility. The G3 is perfectly fine, and Disk Utility works as I just erased a memory stick as a test.
    What's going on?

You need to do the following:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Only use a single-pass to zero the data. Any more is overkill and will take many hours to complete.

  • How does Disk Utility estimate completion time?

I'm sending an external drive back to the vendor for troubleshooting, and want to make it more difficult for a curious tech to examine the data there. So I told Disk Utility to Zero Out Data and Erase Free Space. The drive was just initialized, so it's all free space. Did I mention it's a 2 TB FW800 drive?
Anyway, when I started this yesterday, the time estimate was 14 hours. (No hissing please.) Sleep is only enabled for the display: computer and HDs are set to "Never" sleep.
When I checked this afternoon (about 24 hours later) the estimate was "1 day, 5 hours."
    How is this estimate calculated?
    Thanks,
    harv47

    Grant Bennet-Alder wrote:
The estimate is based on how long it already took to do how many blocks, and how many blocks are left to do. If you told it to overwrite 35 times, it will be a long, long time before it completes.
The estimate is made grossly large by the presence of Bad Blocks that need to be Read during the test (not the case with Erase and Write Zeroes).
Each Block is written with some redundancy bits, so that small errors can be corrected on reading. A Bad Block causes the drive to re-read. and re-read, and re-read, in hopes of getting correctable data the next time. This should NOT be an issue in writing. But if the drive stops responding (which can and does happen with a bad drive) the Erase function will just sit there, thinking it is making progress, and stretching out the time.
    Thanks, Grant.
If I read your reply correctly, Erase and Zero Out free space shouldn't elongate the process, because there's no read occurring.
The drive will not be Mounted while Disk Utility works on it, so it will not be on the Desktop. But ask Apple System Profiler \[ About this Mac > More Info > Serial ATA ] if the drive is still THERE . If it cannot be seen, you have your answer -- the drive dropped out of sight while being tested -- Bad Drive.
Well, now I am confused. It's a FW800 drive. It's on the Desktop. And it appears under FireWire in System Profiler. AND Disk Utility shows a mount point. But the Unmount and Eject buttons are grayed out.
Will the drive be mounted if it fails to respond to Disk Utility? That doesn't seem to make sense.
How do I determine its status? It appears to be stuck at "1 day, 5 hours" but it'll take an hour for that to change. I think it's been that long since I first noticed the time.

  • Disk utility keeps crashing on launch. Help!?

I have a new macbook pro 15.5 and had it for 3 months after which the hard drive crashed. There goes the illusion that nothing ever happens wrong with apple... especially my first one which I treated like a baby.
So it was taken into a support center, they cloned my hard drive and ordered a new one... 22 days later I get my mac back and everything seems in order. Except when I run Disk Utility it keeps crashing. Funny enough when I run it from Recovery mode from boot its fine. But when logged into the OS (Lion) it launches and starts gathering information.
Then crashes and I get the submit fault dialogue... Anyway here is the log. I have run Onyx, applejack etc but the problem has not been resolved.

Did you ever get this solved? I am having a very similar problem. I haven't tried replacing the hard drive yet. When I boot into the Recovery HD, disk utility works fine and says the HD is fine.

  • Disk Utility Problem after update itunes to 6.0.3

After undated itunes to 6.0.3, disk utility runs 1/4 and stopped with message "disk utility lost connection with disk management tool, and can not continue....."
and when i Trashed itunes and Disk Utility worked through ok this happed with itunes update 6.0.2 as well did not happen to itunes 6.0.1.
Any body got any ideas, please help!!!!
    I'm using os x 10.3.9 runing on PowerBook G4 1.3GHz

    Yinwa, see the workaround here.
    Joe
Power Mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

  • You cannot open the application "Disk Utility.app" because it is not supported on this type of Mac.

I mounted a disk image, which popped up a message about Disk Utility not being supported on this type of mac. I ignored it because the image seemed to be mounted, and I was able to drag the app icon out of the image and into my application folder.
Then I tried to launch the app and it wouldn't launch because it "may be corrupted" or something along those lines. I didn't pay close attention because I thought hey, it was just a bad download, I'll try again.
Now I can't open Disk Utility. Every time I try I get this message. I've seen a similar message a few times since updating to Mavericks with other applications (one I can remember is Text Wranger occasionially complains it can't open a file, but it can, and trying again usually gets it to work... This previous experience led to my cavalier approach to the Disk Utility wierdness)
How can I get Disk Utility working again?

You will need to locate the Terminal app in your Mac's Utilities folder. It looks like this:
Find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
    Open Terminal.
Copy (triple-click to select the entire line) and Paste the following line into the Terminal window, followed by the Return or Enter key:
    file /Applications/Utilities/Disk\ Utility.app/Contents/MacOS/Disk\ Utility
Copy and paste the results of that command in a reply.

  • Network Installer: Can't run Disk Utility

    Hi, all.
Just created a net install image. SIU's log did not report anything out of the ordinary, however for some reason I can't run Disk Utility, and I need to as the automated installation options frequently don't work.
I select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and nothing happens.
I run the Terminal and try hdiutil and get
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib
    Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/A/DiskImages
    Reason: image not found
    Trace/BPT Trap
Now, if we mount that image on a running Mac we can see the following
    bash$ ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib

    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
If we run the same command on the netbooted machine
    bash# ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
So it looks like libbz2.1.0.dylib is symlink'd to libbz2.1.0.3.dylib, except libbz2.1.0.3.dylib doesn't exist in the netbooted image. But it does exist in the image when it isn't netbooted! Yes, they are the same image!
I also have two "Help" menus, just for kicks.
Does anybody know what's going on? I guess I'll re-create the image, but it'd be nice to understand what's going on and know if it's something I can somehow avoid in the future.
On the lighter side, this is the first time in nearly a year I haven't had to manually insert the CoreVideo.framework to get the image to boot!

Ah, forget what I said about it being the same image. I didn't notice that my chroot hadn't worked when I was checking... I was checking the live system instead. Good thing, too, 'cause that was just TOO weird.
Still doesn't explain why there's a link to a non-existent file. To test I created a symlink for libbz2.1.0.3.dylib which just points at the previous version. Guess what: Disk Utility works now.
I'm re-creating the image anyway and we'll see if the problem exists on that one as well. If it does, I won't be pleased. That'll be two repeatable bugs that break the NetInstall function for me in a year. Not cool.
Anybody else getting weird output if they type hdiutil in to Terminal at the Network Installer? Or do you have a non-working Disk Utility?

  • Disk Utility crashes after Leopard upgrade

I have a problem with Disk Utility crashing (error message is the generic "application unexpectedly quit")on launch after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I bought the family pack upgrade and had no problem upgrading my G4 mini. However, my Intel mini 1.33GHz, seems to have gotten spooked. For the most part the pgrade was fine but somehow I lost Disk Utility. Has this been seen before? What might I try? Incidentally, the mini has 2Gigs of RAM and plenty of free disk space. The problem occurs in all accounts. Oh, I forgot to mention that I also upgraded to the latest version of Leopard (without checking whether disk utility worked after to install from the disk - so technically, this could be an combo upgrade issue? Having said that, I did exactly the same with the G4 mini and had no issues.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks much!

Boot from the Leopard DVD - hold down "C" key with disk already in place - and after the language screen, in the menu top left, select Utilities and run the DU from there. Repair HD and permissions.
If you did a "merge" install from Tiger (default) then you may have brought some things along that Leopard does not like.
Did you have any "haxies" or other old 3rd party apps installed in Tiger? Most of them won't work with Leopard and need to be replaced or removed.

  • Time Capsule hangs at end of full backup, Disk Utility "not responding"

I'm running a Mid 2011 iMac 27" with OSX 10.8.4 and using a WiFi connected 3TB Time Capsule (4th Gen).
I've noticed that the Time Capsule seems to get stuck at the end of a full back-up (let's say 260 GB of 260 GB) and won't end, even after hours of being left alone.
When I mount the Time Capsule Sparse Disk Image Bundle and then try to run Disk Utility, Disk Utility is shown as "Gathering Information," but the Finder and Activity Monitor list Disk Utility as "not responding."  (No disk information is shown in Disk Utility.) This happens both when I connect via WiFi to the Time Capsule and when I connect directly using an Ethernet cable.  If I don't mount the Sparse Disk Image Bundle, Disk Utility works fine, immediately showing my iMac's Hard Drive, so it only happens when the Time Capsule Sparse Disk Image Bundle is mounted.
    1.  Is Disk Utility truly "not responding" or is it just taking forever to load because of the 3TB hard drive?
    2.  If it truly isn't responding, what can I do to see if the TC needs to be "repaired"?
    3.  What's going on with my TC that it hangs up at the end of a full backup?
    Thanks.

I see an occasional deep node traversal, but sounds like that can be normal.
Not normal, exactly, but TM's way of handling a problem.  See below.

Something went wrong with or on the TM drive (Time Capsule in your case), such as a power failure or abnormal disconnection, where OSX was unable to "close it out" properly, so is unsure if all the changes are in the File System Event Store.  If you're not familiar with the Event Store, see the blue box in How Time Machine works its Magic for details (it's talking about the one on your internal HD, but OSX keeps one on every drive/partition and disk image, including your TC backups.)
Aug 17 21:36:07 Erics-iMac.local com.apple.backupd[1728]: Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
That's one of the causes of a deep traversal.  The UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier, the long string of numbers and letters) for the Event Store on your internal HD doesn't match the one in TM's records from the previous backup, so it must do a deep traversal instead, comparing everything on your Mac to the latest (completed) backup.

Trouble talking to a disk.  The first two probably involve the TC, the third one definitely does -- it's trying to create the new Event Store.

Most of that is also out of my area, but doesn't seem related to the TC or backups.
Hard to tell so far, but it looks like problem is on your network, or power, or with the TC.  Trying backups to a directly-connected external HD would be a quick way to confirm that, and especially if these are your only backups, a wise thing to do anyhow.
It's always prudent to keep "secondary" backups, more so if your main ones are on a network, and especially if there's the slightest doubt about them.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for more info and some suggestions.
And/or, start through the list in the green box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
