Is exception handling required for database blocks?

Hi,
I have a query, if iam having a database block in my form, which is based on a table, and iam displaying the fields directly by dynamically assigning a query to that block, and the saying execute query, in that case is it necessary to handle the no_data_found exception in case there is no data matching the criteria?

No, Forms shows you "query retrieved no records" message.

  • Good exception handling policy for Java web application

    I'm looking for a good exception handling policy for Java web application. First I found this Java exception handling best practices - How To Do In Java which says that you should never catch the Trowable class nor use e.printStackTrace();
    Then I found this Oracle page The Message-Driven Bean Class - The Java EE 6 Tutorial, which does just that. So now I'm confused. Is there a good page online for an exception handling policy for Java EE Web applications? I have a hard time finding one. I've read that you should not catch the Exception class. I've been catching it previously to make sure that some unknown exception doesn't slip through early in the loop and stops all other customers from executing later on in the loop. We have a loop which runs once a minute implemented using the Quartz framework. Is it OK if you just change the implementation to catch the RuntimeException class instead of the Exception class? We're using Java 7 and the Jetty Servlet Container.

    I'm looking for a good exception handling policy for Java web application.
    If you have not done so I suggest you start by reviewing the several trails in The Java Tutorials.
    Those trails cover both HOW to use exceptions and WHEN to use them.
    This trail discusses  the 'controversy' you mention regarding 'Unchecked Exceptions'
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/exceptions/runtime.html
    Unchecked Exceptions — The Controversy
    Because the Java programming language does not require methods to catch or to specify unchecked exceptions (RuntimeException, Error, and their subclasses), programmers may be tempted to write code that throws only unchecked exceptions or to make all their exception subclasses inherit from RuntimeException. Both of these shortcuts allow programmers to write code without bothering with compiler errors and without bothering to specify or to catch any exceptions. Although this may seem convenient to the programmer, it sidesteps the intent of the catch or specify requirement and can cause problems for others using your classes.
    Why did the designers decide to force a method to specify all uncaught checked exceptions that can be thrown within its scope? Any Exception that can be thrown by a method is part of the method's public programming interface. Those who call a method must know about the exceptions that a method can throw so that they can decide what to do about them. These exceptions are as much a part of that method's programming interface as its parameters and return value.
    The next question might be: "If it's so good to document a method's API, including the exceptions it can throw, why not specify runtime exceptions too?" Runtime exceptions represent problems that are the result of a programming problem, and as such, the API client code cannot reasonably be expected to recover from them or to handle them in any way. Such problems include arithmetic exceptions, such as dividing by zero; pointer exceptions, such as trying to access an object through a null reference; and indexing exceptions, such as attempting to access an array element through an index that is too large or too small.
    Generally don't catch an exception unless you plan to HANDLE the exception. Logging, by itself is NOT handliing.
    First I found this Java exception handling best practices - How To Do In Java which says that you should never catch the Trowable class nor use e.printStackTrace();
    That article, like many, has some good advice and some poor or even bad advice. You get what you pay for!
    I've read that you should not catch the Exception class.
    Ok - but all that does is indicate that a problem of some sort happened somewhere. Not very useful info. Java goes to a lot of trouble to provide specific exceptions for specific problems.
    I've been catching it previously to make sure that some unknown exception doesn't slip through early in the loop and stops all other customers from executing later on in the loop.
    If the exception is 'unknown' then maybe it NEEDS to 'stop all other customers from executing later on in the loop'.
    That is EXACTLY why you don't want to do that. You need to identify which exceptions should NOT stop processing and which ones should.
    Some 'unknown' exceptions can NOT be recovered and indicate a serious problem, perhaps with the JVM itself. You can NOT just blindly keep executing and ignore them without risking data corruption and/or the integrity of the entire system Java is running on.
    Is it OK if you just change the implementation to catch the RuntimeException class instead of the Exception class? We're using Java 7 and the Jetty Servlet Container.
    No - not if you want a well-behaved system.
    Don't catch exceptions unless you HANDLE/resolve them. There are times when it makes sense to log the exception (which does NOT handle it) and then raise it again so that it gets handled properly later. Yes - I know that is contrary to the advice given in that article but, IMHO, that article is wrong about that point.
    If you have ever had to maintain/fix/support someone else's Java code you should already understand how difficult it can be to find WHERE a problem occurs and WHAT the exact problem is when exceptions are not handled properly.

  • How to set "Maximum Lenght" column property for database block at RUNTIME?

    Hi folks,
    Is it possible to somehow set a "Maximum Length" property for database block column at runtime?
    I have a dynamic form, which maintains mostly "STATIC DATA" within all application which are stored in different static data tables (which have similar structure). But now, description column in some of those tables was extended (not in all at this stage). I would like to avoid truncating form error while reading data from those extended tables, so I would like to set an MAXIMUM SIZE to accurate value at the time when I'm specifying TABLE NAME for that database block.
    What property should I use to set it?
       -- before executing query in "MAIN_BLOCK" I always set QUERY_DATA_SOURCE_NAME to user defined value => STATIC DATA TABLE name
       Set_block_Property('MAIN_BLOCK',QUERY_DATA_SOURCE_NAME,:control.table_name);
       Set_block_Property('MAIN_BLOCK',DML_DATA_TARGET_NAME,:control.table_name);
       -- here I would like to set also MAXIMUM LENGHT for particular column (based on some condition, etc.. correct value I can get from ALL_TAB_COLS dictionary
       SET_ITEM_PROPERTY('MAIN_BLOCK.DESCRIPTION', <<XXXXXXX>>, 300);What should I use instead of "<<XXXXXXX>>" if I want to overwrite MAIN_BLOCK.DESCRIPTION column's maximum length to 300?
    Thanks,
    Tomas

    Hi Magoo, thanks for reply.
    Yes, but then user can get other errors while trying to set description with value longer than in database (for all not extended tables).
    Aby idea how to implement SET_CUSTOM_PROPERTY like mentioned here?
    Oracle Forms - "maximum length" property.
    Thanks,
    Tomas

  • Is Exception handler necessary for every stored subprogram

    Hi All,
    I knwo exception handler is very important. But is it necessary for every stored procedure or function?
    For example,
    procedure test(p_index_code IN varchar2(10)
    p_changed_code OUT varchar2(15))
    as
    begin
    IF p_index_code = 'A' then
    p_changed_code := 'A'|| p_index_code;
    elsif p_index_code = 'B' then
    p_changed_code := 'B'|| p_index_code;
    else
    p_changed_code := p_index_code;
    end if;
    end;
    This kind of simple procedures, do I have to add the 'exection when others than raise_application_error(-20001,'error in this SP')'?
    I can't see obvious drawbacks without the exception handler in this CASE.
    Best regards,
    Leon

    user12064076 wrote:
    I knwo exception handler is very important. But is it necessary for every stored procedure or function?It is important to know WHY an exception handler is needed. There are couple of basic reasons why you want to use an exception handler.
    The exception is not an error.
    The exception raised is a technical error, but may not be a business or processing error. The typical example is the NO_DATA_FOUND exception. The business logic may say "+when there is no fixed discounts found, apply a 5% dis-count+". So not finding (dis-count) row data in such a case is not an exception. What does you exception handler do? It fixes the exception and there is not an exception anymore. In other words, the caller that called your code will never know that there was an exception.
    Making the exception meaningful
    An exception, like NO_DATA_FOUND, is not very meaningful. What is meaningful is NO_INVOICE_FOUND or NO_CUSTOMER_FOUND. Thus your exception handler can catch a generic exception and make it more meaningful by returning a custom application exception instead.
    Action stations
    Some exceptions will require you to clean up and fix what you can - kind of like action stations when a ship takes a hit. But as you cannot fix the exception, the exception must be passed to the caller so that it too can decide how to re-act to that exception. For example, you may have an open ref cursor or open UTL_FILE handle that needs to be closed when your code terminates. If not, your code will leak resources. So you need to trap exceptions that can occur, clean up, and then re-raise the exception (this is called a resource protection code block in other languages). You may have done a partial transaction - and the exception handler may need to roll back the changes your code made. The bottom line here is that you must re-raise the exception after you have done your "+action stations+" bit. You did not fix the exception. You did not make it more meaningful. In that case you must pass it back to the caller so that it can decide what it needs to do about that exception.
    Using an exception for any other reason - that would likely be the wrong thing to do most of the time.

  • Requirements for database design and installation

    Hi,
    As a database administrator, how to find out whether the database is design and installed properly?
    Can you please what would be the requirements to be considered towards the databse design for application developer ?
    thanks heaps !!!!

    Mohamed ELAzab wrote:
    regarding that the number of execution is the main thing that affects the performance i said that already above " the application executed it 30 000" but you didn't read my answer correctly. I did not respond to that "answer" of yours as it was not part of your posting that I responded too. In your response, which I quoted, talked about non-sharable SQL retrieving 20 rows and after 3 years it retrieving a million rows. This has no bearing on whether the SQL is sharable or not.
    I don't agree with you regarding that the design is not being done regarding considering the performance bottlenecks.So you decide on what the bottlenecks are up front, and then use these as database design considerations? I fail to see any logic or merit in such an approach.
    i want to let you know that we in the telecoms environment have many problems in our databases because the people who designed those applications didn't take performance in consideration.I understand too well - and it is not that they did not take performance into consideration when designing the database, it is because the design is just plain wrong from the start.
    You do not need to consider amount of memory available, number and speed of CPUs, bandwidth and speed of the I/O system, in order to design a database. These have no relevance at all during the design phase. Especially as the h/w that will run the design in production in a year's time can be drastically different from the h/w that will be used today.
    No, instead you use a proper and correct design methodology and data modeling approach. Why? Because such a design by its very nature will make optimal use of h/w resources and will provide data integrity, scalability and performance.
    Again i think design of the database application must take database performance bottlenecks in consideration like application which doesn't use bind variables if they took into consideration to avoid that it will help the DBA in the future but unfortunately most people doesn't do that. And as I said - using bind variables or not has absolutely nothing to do with the basic question asked in this thread: "+what are the requirements of database design+".
    How does using/not using bind variables influence the design of a table? Determine whether an entity is in 3NF? What the unique identidiers are for an entity? These are the design considerations for a database.. not bind variables.
    Yes, SQLs not using bind variables can cause performance problems. Not paying the electricity bill can cause a power outage for the database server. So what? These issues have no relevance to database design.

  • Requirements for database applications

    Hey all,
    I have a couple of questions:
    Is it possible to create applications with databases in a standalone way?
    If I made an application that uses JDBC what would any users of the application require to use it? (if they could install it on their own computers) would they need database software installed?
    Is there any alternative methods you would recommend using rather than a database? for example if I were to store family tree data, a database seems logical, but would you use an alternative storage method?
    Thank you!

    If I made an application that uses JDBC what would any users of the application require to use it? (if they could install it on their own computers) would they need database software installed?Usually you'll need a JDBC driver, which is a single jar file. No other DB software is usually needed on a DB client.
    (Fine print: there are types of drivers that need e.g. .dll files installed, or other cruft like that. But mainstream DBs usually do it the easy way: one .jar file. The driver jar connects to the DB server over the network, sends SQL commands to it, and receives results.)
    You'll need a DB server program. It can run on the same computer as the client, or a different one. The DB vendor will have an install procedure for the server. There are small ("embedded") DB servers, and big ("Oracle" :-) ones. The smallest DBs can even be a single jar file that contains the JDBC API and the code that stores the data in files - no other components needed.
    Is there any alternative methods you would recommend using rather than a database? for example if I were to store family tree data, a database seems logical, but would you use an alternative storage method?There are a number of different ways to store data. Files come to mind. For the example of a family tree, a relational database seems a pretty good fit. The devil is in the details.

  • Registration key required for database 10g software

    receive a password and message "Thank you for registering", but never get the key necessary to install software on disk that came with textbook--very frustrating

    You can download and install Oracle Database 10g free (for personal/development use) from OTN, with no registration key required:

    (I recommend Express Edition)

  • Privileges required for database backup with RMAN

    Hello,
    We have 10g R2 on Solaris box. We use RMAN for backup and use the SYS account on the database to connect and take the backup.
    Are there specific privileges that are required to take the database backup , so that I do not use the SYS account or the syspassword in the RMAN script.
    I want to create an account and give only the privileges required to take the database backup and recover .
    Thanks

    I think RMAN needs the SYSDBA privilege, so you won't gain much by switching from SYS to another user.
    You don't need to store sys/password in a script. You can just :-
    rman target / catalog xxx/yyy@catalog

  • Harware Requirements for database

    initial size of database 5GB
    number of Tables Around 600
    avarage size of record 2kb
    80% of table Grow by 2 lacs records per year
    growth of rest of tables is negligible
    Number of triggers woking would be around 300
    database jobs working with interval 0f 30 min to comunicate with remote database/other databases
    would be around 150
    number of clients around 200 ,would be distant clients
    on client server systems on lease lines.
    query - what should be the harware specification for good performance of database.

    I think that the hardware requirements depends about many different points. Like:
    - the kind of application which is using your database
    - how often the clients are executing transactions on it and the related required ressources
    - how good the database design is
    - how well the sql/plsql code has been written.
    So I think the best is to begin with an 2 cpu server and 2 GB of RAM and then try out

  • Error/Exception handling in MQSeries

    Hi,
    What is the robust (yet simple) way to handle any exception generated while doing any operation in MQ Series for e.g. putting messages on queue.
    Currently i have just done exception handling using try/catch blocks in my java application.
    Kindly explain.
    Thanks,
    Sahil

    This forum is specific to the Sun Java System Message Queue
    product and is not a forum on IBM's MQSeries product.
    If you have a question on MQSeries, you may want to look for a forum on IBM's site.

  • Fundamental exception handling irritation

    Hello experts,
    I have come across a very disturbing effect when using a function module capable of asynchronous execution in a <i>try-cleanup-endtry</i> statement. Please have a look at the following simple construct:
    TRY.
        do_some_db_update( ).
        start_proc_chain_with_fm( ).
        COMMIT WORK.
      CLEANUP.
        ROLLBACK WORK.
    ENDTRY.
    The method <i>do_some_db_update( )</i> can raise an exception (when the update statement contained in it somehow fails). The method <i>start_proc_chain_with_fm( )</i> uses the fm <i>RSPC_API_CHAIN_START</i> to start some process chain, if it returns with return code <i>failed</i> we raise an exception too.
    That is, both methods potentially raise exceptions. Obviously we only want to commit the involved DB changes if neither does and we want to roll back things if one of the two raises an exception (before propagating the exception to a caller).
    Now, what happens occasionally is that the latter method fails, i.e. it actually raises an exception, however the programm flow executes both, the remaining code in the try-block (i.e. the COMMIT statement) <b>as well as</b> the CLEANUP-branch (i.e. the ROLLBACK statement, which of course has nothing to roll back by then anymore).
    Can somebody please shed some light on this, I am very confused. This behavior upsets the very basis of my understanding of how exception handling in try-catch blocks works.
    Of course I somehow suspect the function module's "asychronous" capabilities.. but actually I think this must not have an effect on the construction as such.
    Regards,
    Sebastian

    Hi Matt,
    thanks for you answer. The exception thrown is indeed my <i>chain_start_failed_ex</i> (my class-based wrapper around/equivalent of the original <i>failed</i>-"exception" returned by the function module). That is, an exception is thrown and the programm flow should definitly continue after the CLEANUP statement. However, this is not always the case.
    As for your proposal this could be a work-around for the concret problem. Nevertheless I would very much like to find a general explanation for this "mystery". In principle I think - regardless of what the methods actually do - the effect discribed should never happen..
    Regards,
    Sebastian

  • B2B Exception handling

    Hi,
    Implementing exception handling part for B2B and the version using is 11g.
    I am implementing exception handling by using JMS queue "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    If message is getting error out then B2B producing error message into "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    Checked in server and "B2B_IN_QUEUE" consist the error message.
    In BPEL I am consuming the message. But the instance is not getting created for the message available in "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    In Jms Adapter configuration wizard not provided the option for defining consumer type as "B2BErroruser". Due to consumer type is undefined thinking bpel is not intiating itself by consuming the error message available in "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    I tried by providing message property "MSG_TYPE" value as '3' also.
    But still Bpel instance is not creating...
    Please tell me is required to set any other message properties to make bpel to consume the message.

    After deployed the BPEL process the value of 'Consumers Current' not updating to 1 from 0.
    Values of Consumers Total and Consumers Current not changing after deploying the process or after un deploying the bpel process.
    Can you please tell me what is difference between Consumers Total and Consumers Current?
    If the path i am using for getting consumers information of B2B_IN_Queue is wrong please suggest correct path in the admin console.
    Thanks&Regards,

  • ADF Task Flow Exception Handling

    Hi ,
    I tried a very simple thing for taskFlow exception handling.
    I created a bounded task flow with a page fragment (View1.jsff) and another view which is the TaskFlow ExceptionHandler (error.jsff).
    The view1.jsff has a button whose action is bound to the backing bean. In the backingBean method I deliberately do division by 0.
    Since this is an unHandled exception, I would have expected the control to come to error.jsff. But, instead I am shown a pop up box with the error message.
    Why is the control not getting redirected to error.jsff ?
    Thanks.

    Hi Frank , im having the same problem.
    I want to handle exceptions that occur while navigating task flows (example: A user navigates to a task flow that he/she does not have view permission)
    I tried using a view activity and method activity as the exception handler but none of them works, the exception is still not handles. It does not even navigate to the exception handler on the task flow.
    on the view page i have:
    <af:panelStretchLayout topHeight="50px" id="psl1">
    <f:facet name="top">
    <af:panelGroupLayout layout="scroll"
    xmlns:af="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/faces/rich"
    id="pgl1">
    Error message:
    <af:outputText value="#{controllerContext.currentRootViewPort.exceptionData.message}" id="ot2"/>
    </af:panelGroupLayout>
    </f:facet>
    <f:facet name="center">
    <af:outputText value="#{my_exception_Handler.stackTrace}" id="ot1"/>
    <!-- id="af_one_column_header_stretched" -->
    </f:facet>
    </af:panelStretchLayout>
    I tried getting the error message and stacktrace from the controllerContext via EL like this "#{controllerContext.currentRootViewPort.exceptionData.message}"
    and from the controllerContext class in functions that i have declared in my_exception_Handler class like this
    " ControllerContext ctx = ControllerContext.getInstance();
    ViewPortContext vCtx = ctx.getCurrentViewPort();
    if(vCtx.getExceptionData() != null){
    StringWriter stringWriter = new StringWriter();
    PrintWriter printWriter = new PrintWriter(stringWriter);
    vCtx.getExceptionData().printStackTrace(printWriter);
    return stringWriter.toString();"
    But all this dont even matter because when the exception occurs on the task flow it does not navigate to the default exception handler.
    thanks for your interest and help in advance.
