Is in-car charging BAD for your phone?

I've heard some phone retailers say that because the current generated by cars are 'not stable', charging phones in-car will degenerate the battery - some even suggest it may damage the phone long-term.
Is this true/proven?
Is this more likely if you use third party in-car chargers, versus original Nokia in-car chargers?
Appreciate insights on this matter.
My E71 is such a battery hog with 3G Push Mail, that it's almost a given that I need to top-up the battery while on the go.
Thanks.

Hi asharom
As long as you use Nokia in-car charger and perhaps avoid connection when starter motor is being cranked, I can't really see a problem. Personally I have been using Nokia CK-300 which has an integral phone charging lead.

  • When will there be a car charger available for iphone 5?

I want to know when there will be a car charger available for iphone 5?

Texasgirl97: You do not need a car charger "with a Lightning connector on it". Car chargers have a USB port; all you have to do is use the cable that came with your iPhone 5, which has a USB connector on one end (plug it into the car charger) and a Lightning connector on the other end (plug it into the iPhone 5). Car chargers are cheap, much less than $50 or even $30. I've seen some advertised for around $10. Some even have two USB ports. Extra cables are becoming available now at around $10. Search Amazon.com or other on-line vendors.

  • Is using a 12 volt charger bad for my iPhone 5?

Is using a 12 volt charger bad for my iPhone 5?  I just purchased the iPad Air and it came with the same lightning cable that was included with my iPhone 5.  The only difference is that the charger that came with my iPhone is a 10 volt and the one that came with my iPad Air is a 12 volt.  I find it would be easier if I could just use one cable instead of two, but I'm afraid that the12 volt charger would mess up my iPhone.  Can anyone help answer this question?

There is no problem using the iPad charger with the iPhone. I've been doing it for years because it's just easier. The iPhone will stop charging when it reaches capacity. If you look at the Apple Online Store, you'll see that the 12-volt charger they sell is listed as working for both iPhones and iPads.
    Best of luck.

  • Facebook for your phone

How do you get Facebook for your Blackberry? Do you do it through your laptop or your phone?
I tried to do it on my laptop by clicking on 'Blackberry' under 'Facebook for your phone' and then clicked on 'send to your Blackberry', but it comes up with a 'webpage cannot be found'. Should I click on 'download to your desktop'? What do I do then?
I also tried doing it on my phone. I clicked on 'download facebook for your blackberry' then clicked on 'download through blackberry app world' but when I clicked on 'open in blackberry app world', it says 'the item you selected cannot be displayed. Do you want to save the item?' So then I clicked on 'download blackberry app world', clicked on 'download today' but it says you have to purchase it and there may be fees??

I think in this particular case it's because Nokia released something to the networks who proceeded to ignore it leaving their "valued" customers in the lurch: I'm still waiting for Vodafone to add their bits and pieces to the v4 firmware that Nokia released months ago.

True, the "No updates available" message isn't hugely informative and it wouldn't have been too complicated to add a little more detail, but I guess the networks wouldn't have been too happy with a piece of software that told their customers "Your lazy a** network STILL haven't done their bit"

I would agree that their general attitude to information on bug fixes is pretty dire, but in this particular case it has been made pretty clear what's going on.

  • Surgeon General Warning to T60p: Smoking Is Bad For Your Health!

I currently have a T60p (with Flexview , but last weekend I was sitting on the couch with it on my lap working away and all of a sudden it started smoking and that nasty plastic/electronic burning smell filled the room //! I immediately unplugged it and took the battery out; I was not sure what to do at that point. I booted it with no batttery in it and it booted fine, but the HD activity light now remains solid (lit). I tried putting the battery in one more time and it started smoking again, and I have not tried to put my existing battery (or any other battery) since then. The battery is a 9-cell battery that was a replacement for my original "recalled" battery (less than a year old). I'm not sure what to do with it at this point. I removed keyboard, palmrest, etc. and could not find any physical damage or burning, so maybe the smoke was coming from the battery? I don't know.  Either way it is a serious safety concern.
I should also note that the day this happened, the battery would not charge when plugged into ac.  Vista stated something like 'plugged In, Not Charging'.  I rarely use my notebook without AC power. I use a docking station at work and plug it in when I'm using it at home. When the issue occured, I was using it on battery at my relatives house because I wasn't near a convenient outlet. The battery was working fine, but it got down to 6% and still would not charge when plugged in.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Thanks for your reply.  As I stated previously, my machine boots up fine without the battery (with the exception of the HD light remaining solid).  I have been using ThinkPads since the late 90's and also manage a computer department that currently has about 20 ThinkPads of various models "out in the field" (A20p all the way to T61p). I am quite familiar with ThinkPads and have repaired them, swapped parts out etc. for years. However, I have never had nor am I familiar with dealing with a power problem of this nature which is why I'm seeking advice on these forums.
The only reason I add this is to point out that I am not a "newbie" or "non-technical" type.
I've been on the phone with Lenovo much of this morning regarding this issue (and getting quite frustrated ). All I've gotten so far is basically "It's not under warranty so send it in and we'll fix it for somewhere between $175 and $575". On one hand they are right, but on the other hand this is a serious safety issue that should not occur regardless of whether it is in or out of warranty.  Look at safety issues with cars and other consumer products for example.
And just for the record, I would consider a battery blowing up in my lap a bit more messy than a delay in shipment, etc.

Meg's and Jim's suggestions will probably find what you are looking for.  However, it might be more convenient to use a small DC-to-AC converter that plugs into your car's lighter socket, and use the iPad's wall charger with that.

  • For all you who have problems here is the fix for your phone.

Most of you on here don't understand that 3.x or if you have jailbreak your pass software and set it up from back up you are going to have problems. That can be from drop calls to not having the phone working right.
The 4.0 software has been rewritten completed for the new and old phones. So if you were on 3.x and update to 4.0 then you are bring in a bugs into 4.0. You have to set up as NEW PHONE not from back up. This clean your phone with a fresh software then you add your stuff from your computer. Then you have to go to general and go and reset your network settings. That reset your carrier account with the new 4.0. That because the new 4.0 is now looking to find the tower which has the less people on the tower not which tower is close to you. This way you get a better service and sound of it.
If you still have problems all of you with your iPhone 4 then it a hardware problem. You have to go to the Apple store and replace the phone. Apple will be happy to replace the phone. If not you have 30 days to get your full refund from Apple.
That is it. Nothing hard about it. It's a software problem of a hardware problem. BTW my new iPhone 4 is much better in sound and not having any drop calls than my old 3GS. If you have problems with drop calls is because you are in area which has a week tower which is so busy and can't keep up with the system. That a ATT problem which ATT is working hard to fix it but it can't get the equipment from their supplies fast enough to fix the problem with the network.
I hope this answer your problems on here.

I know this sounds like a bit of Voodoo, but it's worth a try. If you've upgraded to the new iPhone 4 and have restored your old software, you may see what appears to be a signal drop-off. Let's stay away from the whole iPhone 4 "death grip" controversy; that aside, no matter what you do, you're not seeing as many bars or getting reception that's as good as what you had with your older iPhone.
Here's something to try. On your iPhone preferences, navigate to "General," and then scroll down to the bottom where it says "Reset." Tap that, and then tap "Reset Network Settings." You'll get a warning, and the phone will reset to factory defaults. You'll likely lose some Wi-Fi passwords, but you may also find that your cellular reception gets a lot better.
I have two friends who tried this, and they went from one or two bars to four or five at the same locations. This is the same trick they are doing at the Genius Bar, and my research shows that it can help in many (but not all) cases. We've talked about this fix before, but we have a lot of new readers, and some old ones, who may have missed it. There are also some discussions about this on the Apple support board. If you have seen a drop-off in reception, it's certainly worth a try. If it doesn't work, we're sorry. If it does, well, the price is right for the fix. Let us know in the comments if it helped, or sadly, if it didn't.

  • Are car chargers bad for the iPod battery?

There are a lot of companies that sell iPod chargers that plug into your car's cig lighter to charge the battery. Do car charges mess up the batteries?

I don't know why they would. Many people use them on a daily basis and i haven't heard any complaints.

Well, I will say it is unwise that store your iPod in a hot location. It will probably shorten its life. Can you find a cooler place to store it?

  • Correct settings for your phone

During the last week I have spent many hours trying various settings.  I then found a site where you pay £1 and they send the settings to you.  It worked very well.  I just had to fill in online the details of my phone, its service provider and if it was on a contract or PAYG.  No doubt there are several companies who do this.  I used "configuremyphone.com"  They send the settings on a text to your phone and give you a pin number to use which then moves the settings in the text to the correct locations in your phone.

It probably reset the access point for the browser.
First make sure that the access points are ordered correctly in your internet destinations and also check that "Internet" is the default destination.
Then, from within the browser, check the settings and make sure that it uses "default" as its access point. It will then attempt to connect via the WLAN and, if it's not available, go for the packet data service.
