Is Iphone5 really weak in terms of battery life?

Review the topics in this forum and you can see for yourself what problems people are coming here with. Keep in mind that judging a phone by the posts in a support forum gives you a very skewed view. Most people who bought the iPhone 5 are not having problems with it and they are not dropping into the forums to say "Hi, guys! Phone works great!" The people who aren't having battery issues aren't posting here. Keep that in mind as you read through the forums.

  • Is this good or bad in terms of battery life?

So I have a question, my usage is 1 hour, 11 minutes; standby is 13 hours, 29 minutes. This is since the last full charge on my iphone4s and now the battery is at 68%. Is this good or bad, and the thing is when I used certain apps like words with friends even for 2-3mins I actually noticed the battery life going down 2%, and I know that because I have the option for showing the battery percentage switched to on. It's frustating that I'm doing the simplest task like going through settings and the battery is draining so quickly. Does anyone have and suggestions about increasing the battery life?

The short battery life is an issue of iOS5 that should be fixed with the next updates. ( also hope that Apple would fix it fast)

  • Battery Life on iPhone 5 with IOS 7.0.2

    Hi all,
What's the average battery life on iPhone after the upgrade to IOS 7.0.2?
I tried to put my phone (with 100% full battery) on Airplane Mode before I went to bed (around 11pm).
When I checked my phone at 6.30am in the morning, it's only 1% battery left --> 7 hours on Airplane Mode???
The next night, I put my phone on standby mode (Wifi on, Location Services Off, Bluetooth Off, 3G/4G off) same time (11ish)
Next morning at 7am, 5% battery left --> 8 hours on standby with just Wifi On.
I found it a bit weird because before the IOS 7 upgrade, if I put my phone on Airplane Mode, it will last for more than a day.
Wondering if any of you guys has the same issue with the battery?
    Thanks.

I received an iPhone 5 for Christmas and had an iPhone 4.S previously which had no battery issues at all.  The new phone is diabolical in terms of battery life.  I have done all the things that people recommend on here to try and extend the battery life but to no avail.  Just sitting overnight with nothing running in the background drains the battery considerably.   What else can I do?   I have AppleCare on this phone so the people there offer to replace the phone for me BUT the replacement phone does not arrive in a new box and the respresentative was very fuzzy about the fact he would/could not assure me I would receive a brand new phone in its' box.  He just kept saying it will be a 'replacement phone' which is totally unacceptable as this phone is unlocked so we paid full price for it.   The phone is not reliable - whilst out for a full day's ski-ing (I was not ski-ing, just hanging around!) and using the phone for very light Internet browsing and only a few short e-mails, the battery just drained away in front of my eyes so I had to turn it off completely as I have no car charger yet and certainly had not thought to take my electrical charger with me (we won't even talk about the stupidity of making the new charger not fit my other Apple products (three of them!).
I really am so disappointed and don't know what to do next.   As BCCconvert asks, what can we do???  thanks for any help offered.

  • Battery LIfe in Macbook Pro 2012- complete joke

Hi All, just got a new macbook pro for xmas. It was a refurbushed one from July 2012 which comes with warranty etc etc.
Firstly am pretty annoyed as think Appple is really going downhill fast (iphone 5 have seem issues with battery but service in hk ***). The battery on this new computer has a complete life span on 2.42hours. This is with only this webpage open so thus my concern. It is just crap. That cant be right i am guessing as the website says up to 7hrs.
I timed it to take 16% of the full charged battery within 20mins using nothing but very light web browser.
I used to have a macbook pro 2010 which was great but this just seems rubbish. I live in hong kong though and find any issue you have is not recieved with the neccessary service that i am used to in my home country in Australia. They will just tell me to take it to the repair centre. Personally think this is unacceptable as why should i have to do all the leg work on there new computer which is faulty.
Is this a common problem re battery? Also am i in my rights to the peopleat the store that it simply isnt god enough and they should do the legwork rather then me having to take it to the service centre.(i brought it off the apple online store)

Yes the 2010 MBPs were the most efficient MBPs made in terms of battery life (and the 10.6 OS).  I have one.  The subsequent quad core/10.7 OS changed that some what with a lesser battery life span.  I also have a 2011 MBP.
I would say that 2,42 hrs would be disappointing to me as well for light duty CPU loads.  Now understand that Apples battery life claims are based on Ebenezer Scrooge setting.  My rule of thumb that for my 'normal' use will be about 2/3s of Apples advertised times.
I do note your general satisfaction, but as a fellow user there is nothing that I can do to assist you in that area  All I can do is point you to these two articles that may give some strategies where you may be able to increase the battery life:

  • IPad 2 with iOS 7.03 loses 12% of battery life in 24h. in Airplane Mode

    Hi everyone,
I've always tried to maximize the battery life of my iPad; I fully discharge it and then fully charge all the time, and I don't do more than 1 full charge cicle per week.
In iOS 6 my iPad 2 was functioning nicely, with no noticeable battery drain in standby / sleep mode. The moment I upgraded to iOS 7 i noticed that my battery life was draining without using the iPad, about 1% per hour constantly.
I started to do a little bit of research. I made sure first that the iPad really goes to sleep when I close the smart cover.
I started to disable everything, one by one, removed all notifications, configured email to download only when I ask, disabled backgroun application refresh, closesd all applications before putting the iPad to sleep, etc.
I notice a little bit of improvement in terms of battery life in sleep mode but I still had a visible unacceptable battery drain in sleep mode.
I decided then to start real tests so I started to do the following:
    - I fully charged it and fully chaged it
    - when it reached 100% charge I kept it 2 more hours in charge
    - I closed all apps and then I did a restart by pressing simultanously the home and the power buttons for more than 5 seconds
    - I started the iPad, closed the smart cover to put it in sleep mode
    - after 24 hours it was showing 87% so I lost 13%
Next test was similar but before putting the iPad to sleep I, put it in Airplane Mode. This time after 24 hours it was showing 88% so I lost 12%
One very weird thing that happened during this last test was that after 24h in Airplane Mode when I opened the lid, and without turning off the Airplane Mode I got a notification that there is a new software upgrade to iOS 7.04 waiting for me to install. REALLY in Airplane Mode . . . ???? I do not understand.
Have you noticed similar battery drain issues in iOS 7, did any of you performed similar tests ?
I consider 12% battery drain in 24 h. in sleep mode unacceptable, really unacceptable
My next test will be to turn it off for 24 hours to see how much is the battery draining when off.
Maybe Apple people have something to say. I have an appointment to the Genius bar today.
    I'll keep you guys posted

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Do NOT use an iPod/iPhone charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know.  If the above test does, in fact, indicate a problem, read this.
    Also, according to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • Firefox 4.0 forces dGPU, kills battery life

    Hi guys,
Not sure if anybody else has noticed this problem, but since Firefox 4.0 was released, it has really impaired my MBP's battery life.
Besides the egregious use of memory (which isn't a OSX problem as it does it on Windows 7 too), I noticed my MBP getting very hot from browsing the internet. After some deduction and some third party addons to OSX, I determined that Firefox 4.0 -always- activates the dedicated NVIDIA GPU (dGPU) even when it is not needed for simple web browsing.
Normally, the integrated Intel HD graphics (iGPU) is sufficient enough for simple web browsing in Safari, Firefox 3.x and older versions of Chrome and OSX switches to the dGPU when you view a flash video or need some more intensive graphics.
The problem with the dGPU is that it uses much more power than the intel, and it generates much more heat -- requiring the fans to rev up. Between the increased power demand and fan RPM, the battery drains much quicker for just browsing a website such as this one.
I used the 3rd party plugin for OSX called gfxCardStatus to determine whether the intel or the NVIDIA dGPU was active. gfxCardStatus can override what OSX is using so that I can force the NVIDIA or Intel card to be used at my discretion (or leave it on dynamic switching, it's default). The problem is, one of the nice features of OSX is the dynamic switching -- except now when it's being fooled into switching when it doesn't need to.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a solution to make Firefox not trick OSX into using the dGPU for no reason. Right now, I either need to override with gfxCardStatus or I need to use Firefox 3 which properly integrates with OSX's dynamic switching, thus sparing my battery. I rather not have to use an override because there will be times the dGPU is needed and isn't needed and having to manually switch (much less, having to know when to switch) is an arduous task.
I understand these are Apple's forums and there will be people who say "just use Safari" but Safari is absolutely not an option for me. I rather gouge my eyeballs out than use Safari.
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

My suggestion is to ask over on the Mozilla forums why FF 4.0 doesn't cooperate well with the graphics swtiching, or what can you do to keep it not demanding the dGPU.
Have you tried using NoScript to block scripts from running, might reduce the dGPU dmeand some from Flash etc.
I haven't been able to find centralized forums at Mozilla, unless I'm looking in the wrong place. Their support system seems very decentralized - you post a problem and it sits out in cyberspace until someone stumbles upon it. You can't browse like a traditional message board, I can't even categorize it so people can better find it.  But yes, I have posted the problem in their "system" and didn't get much help there other than someone suggesting gfxCardStatus to toggle manually (not exactly a fix like I said).
I've heard of some people trying to use NoScript to block flash (flash is the culprit in a lot of websites that sap battery life surreptitiously but I haven't tried it personally. My issue with trying NoScript is that it is just another "workaround" and not a solution. NoScript will undoubtedly have unintended side effects/consequences where websites just don't display right or "work properly" and I'll probably end up having to toggle it on and off -- no different than fiddling around with gfxCardStatus to turn the discrete dGPU on and off.
Ditto to disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox 4 options (which actually doesn't fix the problem of the dGPU being wrongly activated, and ends up causing more problems than it solves).

  • Battery life and downloading iTunes

    Hello Everyone:
I am once again having more problems with my iPad since updating with the IOS 8.3 system. I will discuss that in another forum. I am also having ENDLESS problems with my latest ipod Shuffle device. This is the 5th iPod shuffle I have had to buy in the past 2 years all because of the same issues. No matter that Apple is at fault with device defects, they still make me buy replacement devices. Plus, the earphones that come with the iPod shuffle are worthless, in that I use my iPod shuffle for running and the earphones are to large to stay in the ears while running so in addition to the $50 for the shuffle device and hundreds of dollars for the iTunes songs, I've had to buy extra headphones that stay in the ears while running. I have approximately 200 songs purchased from iTunes as well as numerous purchased software applicatioms from the Apple store. If I didn't already have so much invested in these items, I would stop buying Apple products. Every one of the five iPod shuffle devices I have purchased in the last two years, they burn out the battery after 40 or so recharges. After 6 or 7 recharges of a new iPod shuffle, it gives less and less battery time. I just bought this latest iPod shuffle a couple of months ago and even though I recharged it all night long, the next day after only playing it for 10 minutes the alert voice came on to warn me that my device battery was low and needed to be recharged. The last device I bought just two months before the latest one, I accidentally bumped it on the ground, hardly anything, but it dented it and would no longer play stereo, but Apple said I had to buy another one. (I fear what Apple will be tell everyone when the least little defect happens with the new Apple watch!) There is clearly a defect in the Apple ITunes program or in the shuffle manufacturing factory that encodes these shuffle devices to start recharging less and less an amount of time with a recharge. This has to be the case because this has happened with, not just one or two iPod shuffles, but with FIVE devices I have purchased in the past two years. I like using the iPod shuffle when I run because it is so small. However, this constant, constant, constant defect in the recharging and expense to buy new ones because the battery life is run down to 15-20 minutes, is tiresome and not worth it anymore. When this first started happening, I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT when I went to the Apple Store and was told that replacement batteries were $50, the same price as the device itself. I feel this is a total scam by Apple to force people to buy more devices as customers are burdened with all the music they have already purchased so they have to have a workable device to play the music. I have repeatesly had problems with Apple accessories which I have had to replace because they break down in a short period of time, like recharge cords, Apple changes the model forcing customers to buy new rechargers because the old ones don't work with the new device, the iPad covers tear and wear out and have to be replaced after six months, on and on.  NOW, also, since updating to the IOS 8.3, my songs do not upload into my shuffle afted purchasing them from iTunes. I went to play my shuffle and the four new songs I purchased didn't even transfer from my iTunes account. This happened a couple of weeks ago too and I had to have a Apple support staff take me through a re-install of iTunes just to get music that wasn't even showing up in my purchased songs even though I had emails proving I had made the purchases. I simply want what any customer expects: the goods and services I have paid for and not having to spend hours and hours searching for solutions to company caused defects. It's not right!

bootlegged songs really make no difference on battery life.
the apple "genuis's" told me this too. I figure it's a complete falsification.
the only thing that i could figure why they could always say that without getting sued or something, is that constant change in the filetype may cause some battery lag. if you feel like it you can go to select all the songs that aren't the most common type in your library and convert to that format. and it might help a little. It won't make much of a difference.
and contrary to the other person you probably should have posted in the ipod forum.
you should probably do a battery test yourself.
    1. bring up to full charge
    2. turn off EQ, backlight, and shuffle
    3. put contrast right in the middle.
    4. turn on repeat
    5. leave it playing continuously somewhere and check it every hour or so to see if it has run out.
this will give you a good idea of how well the battery works.

  • What is the expected battery life for a battery in the MacBook Pro (Late 2007)?

I purchased a replacement battery from an Apple Retailer for my son's 17" MacBook Pro (Late 2007) in December 2009. Last week, he gets a "service battery" message and the battery won't hold a charge. Is this the best we can expect in terms of battery life? It was supposed to be an Apple Battery.

Has your son been calibrating the battery per the user manual schedule?  Has he been using the computer properly? According to the user manual it states in part:"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."

  • Which one of these phones has the best battery lif...

I am going to get a Nokia phone from "O2" store tomorrow. I will either get the Nokia 2700, Nokia 5130 or the Nokia 3120.
The dying Nokia that I am replacing I have had since 2005 and the battery usually lasted over a week between charges. The phone was an inexpensive one, €60 or something. I expect this kind of performance in my new phone.
Which of these phones have the best battery life?

I would vote for 5130 XpressMusic. 5130 and 2700 are on par in terms of battery life. Feature-wise, the former is a tad better. But, it's all about your preference, and the cost.

ios7 ***** battery life! Any ideas?

It's really odd.  Yesterday, my battery life seemed great.  Didn't just slowly die on standby.  This morning, I'm losing battery life just sitting on the same area of my desk as yesterday.  I'm closing all apps in the background, have turned non essential location services off, etc.  I'm hoping it's a bug that gets figured out soon.  Thankfully it seems that the tech sites have tested and see an issue as well.  That may help push this along.

  • X230 Best Battery Life

Hi, I've been looking around for a laptop with the best battery life on the market and I've read the ThinkPad x230 ( http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/x-series/x230/ ) has a quite high battery life, I was wondering how to achieve that, on this site here; http://blog.laptopmag.com/all-day-strong-longest-lasting-notebooks  it says it can achieve even up to 20 hours and 46 minutes with a 9 cell battery and sheet batteries, so I've looked around for the 9 cell battery on your website and I found out it can be ordered with the laptop or separately so that's not a problem but the problem is with the battery sheet, as far as I am aware, the only one that supports the inbuilt battery is the 6 cell battery sheet here  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-76758 but I am still unsure how it all works, if I got the 6 sheet cell battery along with the 9 cell battery with the laptop would they somehow combine their battery life and work as one and when I charge the battery sheet would it charge both of the batteries and indicate the level of both on the battery sheet? will it really achieve 20 hours of battery life without me having to change any settings in the laptop to draw power from another power source (if i left the laptop on and unattended)? I'm really looking forward to buying this laptop if the batteries join and work as one and can get up to 20 hours of battery life.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

By looks and personal observation it is a slice battery.  but it is called an external battery, not sure why.  It is exactly the same thing as a slice battery.
The two batteries together should get a high number of hours.  I am not sure of exact hours though.  with a light load as you have said I'm sure it will not die for some time.  Exact hours are hard to determine without testing it.  Unfortunately I don't have a slice battery.
I think it will be a great tool for traveling.  It is light, fast and has a long battery life.
    I hope this helps,
    Alex

  • Increasing battery life on my iphone 5 (6.0.2)?

    erg.
i just bought a new iphone 5 and was really hoping to get better battery life than my iphone 5.
first couple of days i was really psyched because i would put it on a full charge over night and then i would have a full 100% at the end of the day. pretty much it would last until right through the next day.
Today i put it on a full charge, didn't use it a lick and i have 21%. If i use the phone i run out of charge around 5 or 6.
Can anyone help me figure out A if i can get better life out of this thing and B if i should expect this to get worse and C whether some of these phones are better at holding a charge than others?
it is going to be a real drag to have to carry around an additional battery pack just to get through the day when i am not even using it.
i have Fetch New Data off.

  • Battery Life... why it's really weak power

    Hi,
The battery life of my iPhone 3G doesn't allow me to get it work for a all business day (it's work just about 8 hours).
I read a lot of post about this problem and have few comments about them:
    - some tells it's push which drain the battery: I didn't notice the same on Iphone V1 even when push is on...
Note: Even if push is a problem for battery life, i don't understand why? Balckberry have push mail, calendard, contact and are working all the day...
    - some tells it's 3G; but i have a similar issue about battery life even when i turn 3G off...
Note: A lot of newspaper talked about the Iphone 3G autonomy and tell that battery life of iPhone 3g is better than other 3G device...
In my point of view there is a really big issue concerning the battery; I can't keep a phone which switch off during my day...

Its not only iPhones but also iPod touch that ***** up juice... battery life has gone down significantly with the 2.0 software.
Hopefully there will be a fix soon:):)
It would be pointless buying the iPhone 3G with all these features switched off.
But if some are having these issues until there is a fix then it's probably good advice.
However mine seems OK with all these features switched on.
I top up mine each evening and keeps me going on a day to day basis.

  • Another thread: Poor iphone5 battery life.

    Hi,
Wondered if anyone had any similar experience and if they could fix it without a replacement phone:
    10 days old iphone5 16G.
Initial Battery life with very light use: 22h.
Reconfigured: Turned pretty much everything off apart from 15min fetch email: 36h
    Reset: No improvement.
Restore as new: 48h with ony 2x 30 secs calls so mainly standby only.
    Any suggestions guys?
    Thanks
    John

    Update:
Post Restore as new: Did NOT restore from backup. Then did deep discharge.  Now battery life is in excess of 54h with full pretty heavy use. (although crazy location and icloud stuff turned off).
Really happy.  Great practical real-world phone.  I guess it is a software issue post 6.0.2 update.
Just goes to show; listen to the support guys and do what they say *exactly*.  Dont skip any steps or add anything to what they say and all will be well.  I was skeptical but now converted.  Respect.
Good luck to anyone with this issue.
