Is it legal to request old versions of Oracle software?

Hi all,
I recently purchased Steve Adams' book Oracle 8i Internal Services.
On the authors website (www.ixora.com.au/scripts) there are scripts which are to be run
in conjunction with the text.
I have done this with 10 XE but it doesn't appear to work so well. On the database
forum I requested (for the princely sum of €5 (for postage and trouble - not for the
product itself)) that I be sent a CD if some kind soul had one lying around.
I was then informed that this was illegal - I did put "as long as it's legal and above board
and all that" in my original request.
I wish to emphasise that I am doing this to learn - I am not trying to do anything illegal and/or
that would be a breach of Oracle's software licencing terms.
Can any learned person clarifiy if it is acceptable to obtain old versions of Oracle's software
in this manner?
TIA and rgs,
Paul...

I recently purchased Steve Adams' book Oracle 8i Internal Services. As mentioned in the other thread, Oracle9i can be downloaded from Oracle e-Delivery website but Oracle8i is not longer available for download. Please see this thread for similar discussion -- Re: oracle 8i and 9i

I also believe it is illegal and you have to get the software directly from Oracle or from an Oracle Partner -- You could contact your Oracle Sales representative to confirm.
If you have an access to My Oracle Support (MOS) website and a valid CSI number, you could try to log a SR and ask Oracle Support the Media Pack (though I believe you will be requested to use another version since Oracle8i is no longer supported).
Thanks,
Hussein

  • Old versions of Oracle on web somewhere?

Sorry about posting in this conference, but I couldn't figure
out where else it would go.
Is there anywhere on the web that I can get a copy of Oracle 7.x
for Solaris. Only the version 8.x stuff is on the web, and only
    for NT.
I have a Sun box at home, that I use for interoperability
testing when developing, but I can't find V7.x anywhere.
    Any help appreciated.

    Pls echo reply to email.

Why go with a old version? You could probably find 7.3.4
somewhere, but there are much newer releases - 8.0.3, 8.0.4,
    8.0.5 and 8.1.5(Oracle8i).
Versions prior to 7.3.4 are no longer actively supported on
    Solaris.
    Cheers

  • Must I retain old versions of CS software?

    Hi -
I'm trying to dump unnecessary files from my Mac Book Pro and I noticed I have versions of Master CS Suite apps back to CS4.  Can I safely uninstall these old versions or are they tethered somehow to CS6?
    TIA your input.

    Hi jl2000,
    Welcome to Adobe Forum,
You can safely uninstall the older version as the features of the older version are embedded in the new version, how ever do not discard or destroy the previous version installer(DVD/Download link) & the serial number, they might be required in future .

  • Old version of Apple Software Update

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to upgrade to Itunes 8. But when It trys to install the new version a window pops up and says " The older version of apple software updater can not be removed. Contact the Tech support". I tried to unistall from vista but says it can't remove it.
So if anyone knows how to update to It 8 and remove my old ver. of software update I would surely appreciate it.
    Thanks

    Hi
I have done that, even gone to extreme to unistalling Itunes all together but the old update software is hidden in my computer and new Itunes can't get rid of it so wont install. Went to my explorer and deleted anything that had apple on it but still no joy. So now I am sans Itunes.
    Thanks anyway

  • Why still use old versions of Oracle??

    Hi All,
I was just wondering what are some reasons why organizations continue to use older versions of Oracle like 7 and 8i when we are now at version 11g?
I would love to hear what everyone has to say.
    Thanks,

    >
Mogens Norgaard (Oracle Insights) says that most users only need version
7.3 and that advances since then are for the UPS's and eBays of this world.
    Disagree. Totally.
Oracle OPS cannot be compared to Oracle RAC. 7.3's partition views cannot be compared to
proper partitioning. And then what about features such as FGAC, rman, ASM, Apex, materialised
views - just to mention a few?I readily accept that Oracle is a good deal more sophisticated now than it was in
version 7. I think that Norgaard - a man with no axe to grind with Oracle and who
is a highly respected Oracle database practitioner - is talking about an "average Joe Sixpack
    run-of-the-mill OLTP system".
Why do you think he made this point -
"Most customers really only need Oracle version 7.3 with respect to features"? (p 92 of the book).
All of these we use. In production. For 24x7 corporate mission critical systems. It would be
laughable to suggest that these could run on Oracle 7 and provide as a robust, flexible,
performant and scalable solution as using 10g or 11g.I accept this also - it's just that Norgaard is saying that "most" customers don't need
    Oracle after 7.3.
I would tend to agree - in particular, the (totally free) functionality available
from, say, PostgreSQL and/or Firebird gives you more than this.
Open Source databases? Even more laughable. There is no way that these can compare
to Oracle. Not when doing intensive processing. Not when needing scalability, availability
and redundancy.Look [url http://kevinclosson.wordpress.com/2007/07/18/application-server-benchmark-proves-postgresql-is-the-best-enterprise-database-server-new-specjappserver2004-cost-metric-introduced-too/]here and in particular at the post of Clemens Eisserer
Open source databases have come on in leaps and bounds in recent
years and represent a value for money solution in many cases where
an Oracle licence would be prohibitive.
I have a SE database on a small 2 CPU server that at this very moment is dealing
with up to 12,000 rows inserted every second into a single table.. after which that table
(an hour later containing around 40 million rows) is processed. You want me to believe
that an Open Source database can do the same? Then you will need to prove that cause
I don't think for a single moment that Open Source databases like mySQL, PostgreSQL
and Firebird are anywhere as capable and able as Oracle. Also, take a look at VoltDB - an Open Source high-performance database from
Michael Stonebraker - SQL and ACID in a novel new design.
There are "Lies, damned lies, statistics" and then* there are database benchmarks.
How big are your rows? I'm running Hammerora at the moment against an Oracle 10
XE instance and I'm getting Y no. of rows (I don't think that I'm allowed release any benchmarking
that I do "into the wild") inserted/second - how meaningful is that? What is the disk setup?
[url http://www.ib-aid.com/articles/item104]See here you have a very thorough
benchmark with inserts of 24K rows/sec into a Firebird database.
Table 3: Loading operations Description Value Time to load
    ~70 hours
    Total records inserted
    6.2 billions
    Average insertion speed
    24500 records/second
    Average record size
    146 bytes (min 13 bytes, max – 600 bytes)
    Transactions
646489I don't want to get into a religious war here ;) - particularly since this forum is hosted by
Oracle - I was just trying to explain to the OP why certain customers aren't interested in
the latest "bells and whistles" version of Oracle - 1 reason is that powerful software
is available for free elsewhere - although in terms of features, Oracle does have
the honour of the "kitchen-sink" implementation with a rich feature-set.

  • Installing oracle on Linux using the SAP version of oracle software

    Hello All,
I am trying to install 32bit oracle software on Linux 32 bit os using the SAP version of Oracle Install Software downloaded from marketplace. I have downloaded the required exe and rar files and unpacked them on my PC. The unpacked folder is uploaded in bin mode to the respective server under a common mountpoint. In the folder i have 4 .SAR files with other label files etc.  I want to unarchive these .SAR files to get the runInstaller but running in to issues.
Here are the steps I tried:
    1. I copied the SAPCAR exe from exe directory and tried to unpack the 4 .SAR files but got permission error. All these 4 .SAR files are owned by ora<sid> user id. I tried to do all these under root user still it fails.
    ora<sid>@xxxyysapdbXX:/sapdata//Oracle32/51031674> SAPCAR -xvf OR110232.SAR
-bash: ./SAPCAR: cannot execute binary file
    what am i missing?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have a 32bit OS then you need to use the 32bit binaries of SAPCAR - yes.
    And:
Usually those SAR files are unpacked by the installation program sapinst, why do you unpack them manually?

  • How do I downgrade to old version of ipod software?

I'm relatively clueless, and frustrated. We have yet to update our Windows XP 2002 to service pack 2 because of problems we had when we last updated. But, I received a ipod nano (8 GB "red" if that makes a difference) as a gift and would like to use it! Problem is after initially working well, then wierd stuff started happening, so I went to the Apple store and they suggested I upgrade ipod software and itunes, which I did and now the computer cannot even see my ipod. I called for help and they wouldn't tell me how to revert to old ipod software, but I don't even know which version I had and now need to be compatible with service pack 1. I should also revert to an older version of itunes, but again, which one? And, how do I do these changes? Thanks for any advice

The way iTunes 11 treats audiobooks hasn't changed, but you may have to hunt a little for some of the menu options... You may also find Audiobooks on iPods useful.
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store anduntick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album view use Edit > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.
If you still feel the need to roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and supporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

  • Requesting old Apple account for software updates on previously owned MacBook Pro

I recently got a previously owned MacBook. When I go to App Store, Updates. and click "update" on one of the software packages, I get a message:
You have updates available for other accounts. Sign in to Other.Person'[email protected] to update applications for that account.
This is preventing me from updating the Final Cut Pro software on the computer.
    Suggestions?

Delete it and then download it from your Apple ID.
