Is it mandatory to have OLAP cube processing feature in SCSM ??

Hi All,
We have SCSM 2012 R2 environment with SCSM DW component installed
can we disable the cube processing , if we are not using it ??
or by disabling it will it affect the reporting functionality
Thanks,
Kalai

Hi,
OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) cubes are a new feature in SCSM 2012 that leverage the existing Data Warehouse infrastructure to provide self-service Business Intelligence capabilities to the end user.
To get more details about OLAP cubes, you may go through the article below:

    Hi Nagarjuna:
I do not believe you can load the entire cube into RAM and even if you were able to do so, I don't think you'll be able to solve you performance issues.

If yes, then check if the same alias’s name added in Project Server is added on the Analysis Server.

  • Sharepoint 2013 Reporting Services & OLAP Cubes for Data Modeling.

I've been using PowerPivot & PowerView in Excel 2013 Pro for some time now so am now eager to get set up with Sharepoint 2013 Reporting Services.
Before set up Reporting Services  I have just one question to resolve.
What are the benefits/differences of using a normal flat table set up, compared to an OLAP cube?
Should I base my Data Model on an OLAP Cube or just Connect to tables in my SQL 2012 database?
I realize that OLAP Cubes aggregate data making it faster to return results, but am unclear if this is needed with Data Modeling for Sharepoint 2013.
    Many thanks,
    Mike

So yes, PV is an in-memory cube. When data is loaded from the data source, it's cached in memory, and stored (compressed) in the Excel file. (also, same concept for SSAS Tabular mode... loads from source, cached in mem, but also stored (compressed) in data
files, in the event that the server reboots, or something similar).
As far as performance, tabular uses memory, but has a shorter load process (no ETL, no cube processing)... OLAP/MDX uses less memory, by requiring ETL and cube processing... technically tabular uses column compression, so the memory consumption will be based
on the type of data (numeric data is GREAT, text not as much)... but the decision to use OLAP (MDX)/TAB (DAX) is just dependent on the type of load and your needs... both platforms CAN do realtime queries (ROLAP in multidimensional, or DirectQuery for tabular),
or can use their processed/in-memory cache (MOLAP in multidimensional, xVelocity for tabular) to process queries.
if you have a cube, there's no need to reinvent the wheel (especially since there's no way to convert/import the BIDS/SSDT project from MDX to DAX). If you have SSAS 2012 SP1 CU4 or later, you can connect PV (from Excel OR from within SP) directly to the
    MDX cube.
Generally, the benefit of PP is for the power users who can build models quickly and easily (without needing to talk to the BI dept)... SharePoint lets those people share the reports with a team... if it's worthy of including in an enterprise warehouse,
it gets handed off to the BI folks who vet the process and calculations... but by that time, the business has received value from the self-service (Excel) and team (SharePoint) analytics... and the BI team has less effort since the PP model includes data sources
and calculations - aside from verifying the sources and calculations, BI can just port the effort into the existing enterprise ETL / warehouse / cubes / reports... shorter dev cycle.
I'll be speaking on this very topic (done so several times already) this weekend in Chicago at SharePoint Saturday!

  • SCSM2012: Cube processing failing on two cubes - ConfigItemDimKey not found

    Hi
Two of our cubes (SystemCenterSoftwareUpdateCube and SystemCenterPowerManagementCube) has started to fail processing lately. In ServiceManager they the error is just "failed", but in SSAS there is a lot of errors.
Both cubes fails with the following error when SSAS processing them:
"Errors in the OLAP storage engine: The attribute key cannot be found when processing: Table: 'ConfigItemDim', Column: 'ConfigItemDimKey', Value: '7200'. The attribute is 'ConfigItemDimKey'. Errors in the OLAP storage engine: The attribute key was converted
to an unknown member because the attribute key was not found. Attribute ConfigItemDimKey of Dimension: ConfigItemDim from Database: DWASDataBase, Cube: SystemCenterSoftwareUpdateCube, Measure Group: ConfigItemDim, Partition: ConfigItemDim, Record: 7201. Errors
in the OLAP storage engine: The process operation ended because the number of errors encountered during processing reached the defined limit of allowable errors for the operation. Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while processing the 'ConfigItemDim'
partition of the 'ConfigItemDim' measure group for the 'SystemCenterSoftwareUpdateCube' cube from the DWASDataBase database."
=> My question: is it possible to recreate this ConfigItemDimKey manually (and how), or delete those cube and create them from scratch (back to oob status) ?
    Thanks.
    /Peter

    Hi Peter,
We recently had similar issues with our ChangeAndActivityManagementCube. After a conversation with a Microsoft supporter I was able to work around that problem and so far it hasn't appeared yet.
As you can read from the error message the issues appears when Analysis Services tries to process the ConfigItemDim measure group. During the processing it's looking up the corresponding dimension for attribute key. Now when the Measure Group
is getting processed before the corresponding dimension is processed, it's possible that the attribute key doesn't exist in the dimension table yet and then this error occurs.
What you have to do is the following:
    1. Process the dimensions manually using PowerShell and the following code (change the server address and SQL instance and execute it on the AS server):
    [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.AnalysisServices") > $NULL
    $Server = New-Object Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Server
    $Server.Connect("YOUR_DW_AS_SERVER\DW_AS_INSTANCE")
    $Databases = $Server.Databases
    $DWASDB = $Databases["DWASDatabase"]
    $Dimensions = New-Object Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Dimension
    $Dimensions = $DWASDB.Dimensions
    foreach ($Dimension in $Dimensions){$Dimension.Process("ProcessFull")}
    2. Then process the affected measure group manually using the SQL Management Studio. You have to connect to the AS Engine, expand the DWASDatabase DB -> Cubes -> Measure Groups -> right click the affected Measure Group and select process ->
leave the standard settings in the next window and press ok.
You have to repeated step 2 for each Masure Group mentioned in the event logs.
    3. Now process the entire cube by right clicking the cube in SQL Management Studio and select Process. Now the processing should finish successfully.
Since then the data warehouse cube processing jobs were working fine again too in our installation.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers
    Alex

  • Permissions for role in OLAP cube are removed when cube is rebuild

Project Server rebuilds the OLAP cubes every 6 hours. I've recently added a role with "Process database" permissions, but this permission is removed each time the OLAP cube is rebuilt.
I've read in a different thread (slightly older software versions) that to solve this issue, you can script and schedule the handling of permissions for that specific role, but it's not really a solution. The duration for the OLAP cube to rebuild varies
in duration over time, and I'm not sure it's healthy to change the role permission on a cube when it's being rebuild.
Is there a different, elegant way to solve this? I'm sure this can't be the intention?
    I'm running SQL Server 2008, Sharepoint 2010 SP2 and Project Server 2010 SP2

sorry, i dont have much experience with project server. But, from the quick glance, it does look like as you said the configs are very limited including the ability to change user roles. My suggestion is that you take the cube solution and add the user to
the role and redeploy to the AS. The assumption here is that, though you add the user manually, it is being written over with the old solution.
of course if you want to proceed with changing the roles via a script, you can schedule a job to run right after the cube has been processed each time.
probably better maintenance solution is to redeploy SSAS solution and reprocess.

  • OLAP cubes disappear

    Hey Guys,
I am having some trouble with my OLAP cubes. When I log in at the analysis server manager I do not see any of my cube in the database folder.
I tried te restore my application using the server manager, full processed all my dimension, modified my applications in the administration console but nothing brought back my cubes. Does any of you guys has an idea?
I am running on Windows 2003, SQL 2005 and BPC 7
    Thanks

I think we may need a little more detail on the process to help.  What version is the back-up FROM? Did you have any errors during the restore process using server manager, restore process?  The Restore process in the Server Manager actually re-builds the OLAP during the restore, so if you had any errors the process may not have finished.  If you are restoring this manually, we would need to know the details of that process as well. If you are restoring from the version 5.1, did you make any changes and verify that the complete application was fully processed prior to the back-up.  If not, having bad or unused / unprocessed dimensions in a backup will often cause the restore to fail, and OLAP to not be rebuilt.
    Please let us know.

  • Largest Oracle OLAP cube

    Forum members,
What is the largest Oracle OLAP cube that is out there in terms of total size, number of dimensions, and metrics? The company I recently joined uses Microsoft SSAS for building cubes pulling data from an Oracle DB. The size of the Microsoft SSAS cube is 18 TB (Tera Bites). I am encouraging these people to use Oracle OLAP, but there is push back saying Oracle OLAP won't scale to the extent Microsoft SSAS has.
I need some real data to defend my case. Has any one moved from Microsoft SSAS to Oracle OLAP?
    Thanks,
    Logan

    Logan,
In addition to the link that David provided, some more points are:
(1). With cube compression, it could be that the same 18 TB cube in MSAS is smaller in OLAP. Its hard to prove it without doing a test load.
(2). Microsoft does have a very feature-rich front-end to develop/build dimensions and cubes for MSAS, compared to Oracle OLAP's AWM.
Most of the work is handled in relational sql-views before loading dimensions and cubes in Oracle-OLAP. That is why there is relatively less functionality in AWM.
(3). Another thing I heard about in MSAS is "Scoped Assignments". I am not sure what it is, so I can't say how it can be done in Oracle-OLAP. If your customer currently use this MSAS feature, then you can post a question on this forum providing some details.
(4). MSAS does provide good Excel reporting. If your client will continue using Excel, then you should look at Simba's Oracle OLAP MDX plugin for Excel. Search this forum and you will find information about it, or goto http://www.simba.com/MDX-Provider-for-Oracle-OLAP.htm
(5). Writeback is another feature that can be done easily in MSAS. With Oracle-OLAP, you will have to come up with a custom (although simple) solution, where the data will be written into a table first and then loaded into Oracle-OLAP cubes. Its a very very quick process.
(6). There are more choices for reporting tools compared to MSAS. Since Oracle-OLAP cubes are queried through SQL SELECT statements, as long as a reporting tool can generate SELECT statements for an Oracle database, it can also work with Oracle-OLAP.
(7). Finally, it is much easier to federate (or combine) relational and multi-dimensional data together between Oracle-OLAP and Relational, as both are in the same database. So you may not have to store all the data into OLAP cube, what is currently loaded into MSAS cube.
Overall, its a slightly different way of doing things between OLAP and MSAS. But I am almost certain that with the power and scalability of Oracle database, Oracle-OLAP will perform better than MSAS. You just have to know how to convert those MSAS cubes/dimensions into OLAP cubes/dimensions.

  • Drill-through from 1 OLAP Cube to another.

Hi.Is it possible to drill-through from 1 OLAP Cube to another OLAP cube for AWM?Thanks!

Where are you in the process ?
If you don't have build the metadata for OLAP, do it first.
    Here a beautiful example :
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/olap_biee/index.html
Once you can query your OLAP cube, create all the join in the physical layer for your ROLAP source.
Drag and drop the ROLAP fact measures on the measure of the OLAP cube
and add the ROLAP column dimension table to your OLAP dimension table.
At this point, you can then create the new ROLAP level in your dimension.
Just add the new ROLAP dimension column in the presentation layer and you're done.
The trick is that normally you don't have the same dimension column in your MOLAP and ROLAP environment.
In this way, OBIEE will choose the good dimensional schema (ROLAP or MOLAP).
    Cheers

  • Can I store only the aggregate data in OLAP cube

    Hi All,
I know that the OLAP cubes store the leaf data and then builds the aggregate data on top of it and stores with in it. I have huge amounts of data ( like billions of data in my fact table and 6-8 dimension tables). If you keep the leaf data along with the agg data with in the cube would be too large to build.
So I am thinking to have to store only the agg data within the OLAP cube and for the leaf data it should still read from the Relational tables. Something like Hybrid OLAP.
    (what I mean is
    1. create the dimensions and cube in the AWM on 11g.
    2. I will also specifiy the levels that I want the agg data to be calculated and stored in the OLAP cube.
    (what I want is
    1. I want to store only the agg data in the cube and leaf data still in the relatlional tables.
    2. when I read the cube and drill down to the leaf level , it should fetch the leaf level data.
Is this possible in Oracle OLAP, if yes please provide some pointers
    Thanks
    S

First you should try out storing and aggregating data to atleast see if the cube-loading time, query-time and AW-size is within acceptable limit or not. 11gOLAP especially 11gR2 OLAP is very efficient on all three fronts.
Regarding specifying levels, you can either use Cost-based-aggregation and pick the %age that should be pre-aggregated OR you can use Level-based-aggregation and pick the levels from each dimension that should be pre-aggregated.
Try these out before venturing into anything else. You will be surprised by the results. There are other ways to store the data in smaller multiple-cubes and joining those cubes through formulas. Make sure you don't mistake an attribute for a dimension.
Not sure what you mean by just storing aggregated data in olap cubes. You can just do a SUM .. GROUP BY .. of relational data before loading it into olap cubes. For example, if you source data is at DAY level, you can SUM.. GROUP BY .. at MONTH-level and then load month-level data into olap cubes where leaf-level is month-level.
The sql view (used by reporting tools) could then be a join between month-level "olap" data and "day-level" relational data. When you are drilling-down on the data, the sql view will pick up data from appropriate place.
One more thing. Drill-Thru to detail data is a functionality of reporting tools also. If you are using OBIEE or Discoverer Plus OLAP, then you can design the reports in a way that after you reach the olap leaf-level, then it will take the user to a relational detail-report.
These are all just quick suggestions (on a Friday evening). If possible, you should get Oracle OLAP Consulting Group help, who can come up with good design for all your reporting needs.
