Unfortunately, no. Home sharing only applies to devices sharing the same Wifi network.
iTunes Match is an alternative to look into.

If you have iTunes 11 on your computer then you can enable the left-hand sidebar on it via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC - when connected (and if your computer's iTunes is up-to-date) your iPad should then appear on that sidebar under a 'Devices' heading :
If you select the iPad on that sidebar you can then use the Movies tab on the right-hand side of the iTunes screen to select and sync that film to your iPad's Videos app.

We have tons of cachets and air TV and I would like to get them all connected. All catchets are set up using either my wife's or my Apple ID. Yet or home sharing it says that one has to log in with the same Apple ID. Hence, can I log in with my device (registred with my Apple ID) using my wife's Apple ID without messing up my Apple ID credentials?
Make sure you changed the ID that you are using for iMessage. Open the Messages app and go to Messages>Preferences>Accounts, select your iMessage account on the left, then check the Apple ID to the right. If it's your Mom's, sign out, then sign back in with your ID.
You can only add a phone number if you are using the same Apple ID for iMessage on an iPhone. If you are, the phone number should automatically be added when you sign into the ID. -
I had rented and downloaded movie from Itunes previous to purchasing and installing Apple TV. I set up home sharing with all computers and Ipad.
Can I now watch movie on Apple TV which I had previously downloaded? I tried to access on Apple TV but videos show as empty.You cannot access the movie from the Apple TV screen. You would need to use airplay on the iPad to stream the video to the Apple TV.

I have set up home sharing for my music, but I can't access playlists, although I made the entire library available through 'Preferences'. Can anyone suggest a solution?
ok i actually got a id set up and allegedly home sharing is on but the thing is the ipod when syncing keeps saying it can only use one itunes library do i want to erase my songs? i do not want to erase my songs. my itunes library i originally used is on my other computer which has no more disk space to add music to and this computer the xp also has not enough disk space to put both libraries on .. I have a new IPAD and just bought APple TV. Need to set up home sharing on my account and have followed Support options wherein you log into ITunes, choose advanced, then allow Home sharing. There is no place to even sign in to ITunes as i have always seen before. Cannot start ITunes on Laptop (linked to IPAD) at all but can from Browser. You don't share content from AppleTV (as it contains no content) and you can AirpPlay from iPad to AppleTV, not share content.
To turn on Home Sharing on the iPad, Settings > Store.
THis allow soyu to view the content of the iTune slibrary on your comnoputer. -
Home sharing problem: I have never set up home sharing but I feel I the concept and how it works. I recently (last 2 months or so) deauthorized, first time ever, all computers with my iTunes account. I have 3 computers authorized. I am trying to set up home sharing but get iTunes says:
"Home Sharing could not be activated because this computer is not authorized for the Apple Id "#########@###.com". Would you like to authorize now?" I click "authorize" and get the next error " You cannont authorize more than 5 computers. You have already authorized 5 computers with this Apple ID. To authorize this computer you must first deauthorize one of the other computers."
Can someone help or shed more light on my problem?

RichardHome Sharing is designed to work on your local network not across the internet/cloud.
Stuff is accessed under the Computers column where your local iTunes library on a local computer would appear.
Home Sharing would share your iTunes content (i.e. stuff stored in itunes on the computer, not in the cloud) with AppleTV or an iPad etc on the SAME network.
AppleTV2 will not be able to see itunes content on the work computer over the internet. It's not designed to. if the work computer was on the home network it would.
iCloud is in it's infancy and is not a mature product - iTunes TV Show purchases appear on AppleTV, but currently music does not unless you are subscribed to iTunes Match. I find this rather odd to be honest, along with the inability to buy music on AppleTV2. Movies purchased in iTunes are not authorised for iCloud viewing currently either.
Maybe it has something to do with iTunes Match 'getting in the way' - i think they assume you'll use that whereas you really want to be able to access Purchased music from the cloud without subscribing to itunes Match which is overkill for some.

I just got an HP Stream 8 tablet with Windows on it. I have a Mac desktop running 10.6.8. I set up Home Sharing by making sure both had the same version of iTunes and I authorized the new tablet (desktop already was). (I haven't exceeded the number of authorized computers.) I would like to take some of the playlists I have on my desktop Mac and copy them into iTunes on the tablet. I hooked up the tablet to my desktop with a USB cable but wasn't able to get it to copy. I do not have WIFI....is there a way to do this by just having the tablet hooked up via the USB cable? If so, can someone please talk me through the steps necessary to do that? Thanks!
Did you erase the machine and set it up with your accounts or is the previous user still on it?

Shared tab in left menu column does not show on one of the computers after setting up Home Sharing
For iTunes 10.3, I have set up home sharing on two computers that run windows 7, I have authorized both computers. The iTunes Shared link for computer 2 shows up on left column for computer 1(main iTunes computer). The problem I am having is that the Shared link for computer 1 DOES NOT show up on computer 2. My network between the both computers is working because I am able to pull/copy music files from computer 1 to computer 2. Why doesn't the Shared link for Computer 1 show up on Computer 2 Itunes left column? Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.
Nothing had changed when I plugged in my iPod at work today, having changed it to manage manually earlier at home. But after rebooting a few minutes ago, iTunes cranked up and updated the library. The library now appears below DEVICES/iPod on the menu instead of under LIBRARY/Music at the top left, which I'm pretty sure is different from before, but no matter. Also the iPod is still not appearing in My Computer but again, no matter. I am able to play my tunes on the work install of iTunes now and use iDump (which is a helluva lot less trouble than iTunes) to extract them.

When trying to view shared playlist, or any music for that matter the music app is blank. All it show is no music in the middle of the screen and a play button in the top right corner

Thanks for your reply I have set up home sharing for music but on appletv now they want me to subscribe to iTunes match for an annual fee. I cannot find an 'advaced' option on any menu. Perhaps ihad it all wrong with appletv I thought I would be able to have the same apps on my appletv as I had on my iPad bt is it really just for renting videos off iTunes?

My Iphone was out of storage so I deleted downloaded music and set up home sharing where I supposedly could access music stored on my computer. It is supposedly set up correctly on my computer and my Iphone 4. Both have latest software. Instructions say to open music and then press more but when I open music app there is no "More" It just says "no content" and a link to Itunes Store. How do I get "More" to show up in my music app?
You need to configure computer iTunes to share. not just your computer.
