Is it possible to use ARD to upgrade Tiger clients to Leopard?

I have around 70 or so Macs that I need to upgrade to Leopard before the end of this year. I'm looking for a way to accomplish this without having to physically go to each Mac to perform the upgrade/install. Is there any way to use ARD to accomplish this?

I have upgraded the clients using ARD and Netboot. But during the update process you will be unable to access them. I have done this on 10.3 to 10.4. But I haven't tried it with 10.5. YET
Use system imaging utility, create netinstall image from DVD. Automate installation with auto reboot. All startup disks have to have same name for you to fully automate without user intervention.
You also have to be on the same subnet to select start-up disks from the ARD admin Computer. Then from ARD select boot device as netboot install image. And reboot. Machines will update to new os assuming there are no problems.

  • Upgrade from Tiger (client) to Leopard Server

    Hi all,
I have a client with an existing dual G5 box they have running Tiger. They use it as a file share primarily but want the extra functionality of the server OS (viz Leopard server). Is there an upgrade path from OS 10.4 client to 10.5 server or is it a backup/format/restore process for the data? Thanks in advance for any replies.
    Cheers
    Si

Well, I can offer my opinion on best practice, other opinions may vary.
In the past, you have been able to upgrade client versions to server. I believe this creates a new System folder. In any event, the client OS and the server OS are not the same thing with different features, There are some functional differences. So if you plan to use the Mac as a client and a server, I'd really recommend against that. I'd also recommend erasing the HD and installing the Server OS on a clean HD.

  • I have upgraded Tiger to Snow Leopard to restore MacbookPro for space will i have to re-upgrage

I have recently upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard, however I wish to restore my MacBookPro . When it restores, will I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard again? Hope this make Sense

If you use the original installation disks which shipped with your computer, then it will install Tiger (10.4). However, if you use your Snow Leopard disk and do a clean install it will put you at 10.6.0 or 10.6.3 (depending when the disk was purchased, then simply use Software Update to update to the latest copy of Snow Leopard. Using the SL disk you can completely wipe your MBP and freshly install a copy of SL.

  • Is it possible to use an external hard drive wirelessly w Leopard?

Upgrading to Leopard seems to have ruined my wireless home network, which worked very smoothly with Tiger. After a couple of tries, I was unable to connect wirelessly to my external hard drive (connected directly to Airport). I was then unable to even access the data directly. I am right now using Data Rescue II to see how much of the data on the hard drive can be retrieved.
I tried an old external HD with airport to see if that would work, and it failed also.
Is it even possible to set up a wireless network with Leopard that will let me move data to an external HD??
    Any help is appreciated.
Message was edited by: Joe Mondo

I may have phrased my question poorly.
Pre-Leopard, my external HD was connected directly to Airport. I used it wirelessly.
When I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Leopard, it was almost impossible to access the HD wirelessly, and then outright impossible.
I tried the same setup with another external HD and that didn't work either. When I try to access the HD wirelessly, I get nowhere.

  • Is delegation of a calendar possible on using Office 365 and any client whatsoever on Mac?

I am looking for any way for OS X users to use Office 365's exchange calendaring service to delegate / share a calendar with another user on Office 365.
I have researched the MS knowledge base which states that for delegation, you need both an Exchange server (which I presume Office 365 is) and either Outlook 2010 or 2013 - neither of which run on OS X. If I have to, I could get to these software to temporarily
sign in and set up the delegation, but I don't want to run Windows day in and day out and need a native OS X solution.
Short of running Windows virtually day to day, can OS X users use delegation features of Office 365?

I am looking for any way for OS X users to use Office 365's exchange calendaring service to delegate / share a calendar with another user on Office 365.
    This article should help:

But... I'd expect that this will only work if both the mailboxes are within the same O365 tenant (since delegation is really a backend-server feature, which requires a common security/directory, and that's only possible within a single tenant, and not across
    tenants AFAIK)

  • Problems using Migration Assistant from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I want to scavenge files and apps from a Power Mac G4 (PowerMac3,5) running Tiger 10.4.11 before I turn it out to pasture. Most of them were migrated years ago to another system and have been updated and upgraded over the years, but a few apps have no modern equivalent. Now I want to do one last "pull" to pick up anything left behind all those years ago, particularly apps for which the install discs are in deep storage at best and possibly discarded.
I'm trying to use Migration Assistant in a nearly virgin Snow Leopard 10.6.8 system (installed fresh from 10.6.3 retail optical disc, updated over the network, lightly tested). It has a single admin account, no other user accounts.
Possible complicating factors: the Snow Leopard system is Server running under Parallels 10.1.4 on Yosemite 10.10.2 on an Early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) with  third-party USB3 controller in a PCI slot.
At present, I'm using a portable drive with both FW and USB interfaces as an intermediate storage (FW on the G4 to clone the system drive, USB on the Mac Pro to connect it to the virtual machine). SL sees the drive just fine, can copy files from it, and can even run apps from it. Migration Assistant sees the drive and offers to migrate from it.
    Two problems:
    1. No matter what user(s) I select for migration, Migration Assistant tells me it is a duplicate account. Proposing an account name never used before does not help. As a result, no user files can be migrated. (Obviously, I could copy them in other ways, but I think MA should do a more thorough job.)
    2. Migration Assistant offers to migrate absolutely no applications. Even applications that SL will run from the drive cannot be migrated. (Some are PPC apps, but SL will run them via Rosetta. Others are Universal apps.)
Am I expecting too much of Migration Assistant?
Is the Migration Assistant shipped with SL Server (and updated through Software Update) not capable of running under SL Server?
Should SL MA refuse to migrate any applications from a Power Mac, even Universal applications?
    Am I missing something obvious?
Is there key information I have omitted?

Not sure what you meant by that statement.  Although this "principle" may be more important to you than the twenty bucks, I know that my time is worth more to me than your twenty bucks!
    What apps are you using?
    markwmsn wrote:
I was able to install Snow Leopard (client) in a partition, and it was able to migrate users and many applications from the G4 clone on the portable drive. Some of the apps even run.
Then I went back to my SL Server virtual machine and tried to migrate FROM the SL client partition. Migration Assistant showed the same symptoms as importing from the clone directly (no apps offered, bogus "dup user" errors). I am forced to conclude that either (a) Migration Assistant 3.0.4/1.1 is broken when run on SL Server or (b) my new SL Server installation is broken. I'm either going to have to boot back and forth to run the old apps or find their installation media and reinstall them in my SL Server virtual machine.
Even worse, I realized that one of the antique programs I still haven't dug everything out of is a Classic application that had to be kludged to survive Y2K!
    Thanks again, MIchaelLAX.
Anybody else have any clever ideas?
So, glad to see that Migration Assistant did work for you in Snow Leopard...

Here is a recent post I assembled for running Classic apps on Intel Macs:
With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.
A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included (google the term "Classic-On-Intel v 4.0.1 chubby bunny").

  • Upgrade Tiger to Snow Leopard - did I get wrong software?

Was in Apple store today, and told the sales person I wanted to upgrade my TIGER iMac to SNow leopard. I had thought I needed the Box version which comes with Works, etc. and I didn't want to spend for all of that since I only wanted to go to Leopard.
He asked me which Processor I had, and I told him the Intel Duo. He said with that processor, I can buy the stand alone Snow Leopard for $29 & that would work.
I actually questioned him pultiple times and he was quite adamant that I could use this to put Snow Leopard on my machine. But from what I am now reading (NOT on the outside of the box Snow Leopard comes in), this only can upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard.
Did he give me wrong info? Can I use this disk to install Snow Leopard on my white iMac machine?
    Thanks

That is correct, but you should do the following before upgrading:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Upgrade Tiger to Snow Leopard...... hardware upgrades?

Hope I'm putting this in the right location.
I'm currently running my MacBook in it's original configuration, as follows..

    Mount Point: /
Up to now all is working well, but as my wife has a new MB running snow leopard and I don't want to get any odd file compatibility issues etc, it's time for an update.
So I'm just wondering are there any preparatory hardware upgrades I should be considering?
I only have the original 1GB of RAM...... I see from the apple store that I need to identify which generation my machine is...... from the above I thought it looks like Gen 2- is this correct?
Since I only have a bit more hard drive space left, I'd consider upping that too, but I could manage with an external if the cost was disproportionate.
Final question is will the Snow Leopard box set family pack upgrade straight from 10.4.11 without any intermediate steps?
I'm assuming that software-wise I nede to follow one of the recent guides on the forum ie tidy up unwanted files and apps, permissions before a fresh backup (superduper?).
Apologies for the slightly rambling approach (forming the question becomes a part of my decision process)
    Cheers
    Gareth

To answer your final question first you can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 will run under 10.6. You can install and run 10.6 with what you have in the MacBook right now. 1gb of RAM and the 80gb hard drive. I recently upgraded an older MacBook (1,1) with the same configuration. The generation of your machine simply tells you how much RAM you can use. 1,1 can use 2gb of RAM, 2,1 can use 3gb, 3,1 can use 4gb. Here's EveryMac.com's page on your MacBook http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-white -13-specs.html
If you want to upgrade your RAM and hard drive you can do so for about $50 for each.
    For RAM check DealRam.com http://dealnews.com/memory/prices/systems/Apple-Mac-Book-PC2-5300-DDR2-SODIMMS/4 3938/2GB.html or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
Your MacBook can hold two 2gb chips but can only use 3gb. I've got my 2,1 with one 1gb and one 2gb and don't notice any slowdown.
For hard drives try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

  • Upgrading tiger to snow leopard

My Macbook currently runs on OS X.4.11.
I've just purchased an iMac running snowleopard.
Can I use to OS disk that came with my iMac to uprade the OS on my Macbook? Any issues I should beware of?

The disks that ship with a Mac are machine specific....you would need a retail copy of Snow Leopard for it to work correctly....drivers for the hardware in the iMac won't be correct for the MacBook...sorry

  • Upgrade: Tiger to Snow leopard gone wrong...

    Hi,
I am trying to upgrade my iMac from Tiger (latest version) to Snow Leopard with the box set. The upgrade goes as far as completing the loading of Snow, but then the rainbow pinwheel of infinity starts spinning in a blank screen, and nothing further happens.
I called the tech line and was told to erase my HD and start from scratch (the tech was obviously not very interested in trying to solve the problem rather than giving me a quick fix). I don't WANT to do that - defeats the purpose of an UPGRADE. If I did, I would have stayed with a PC. Where's the wonderful Apple superiority???
I made a backup with the backup program in Tiger (the umbrella-icon program), but am not sure it has everything I need and want, and even if it does, will it load in Leopard? The tech said I could reload Tiger and yada yada yada, with no real intention of helping me through the process. He was NOT very helpful at all (my first bad experience with an Apple tech).
So, currently my iMac is down for the count. Any ideas as to why SL wouldn't load completely or run? Would having a printer and an Airport hooked up mess things up? And any suggestions as to what I do now (other than track down someone at Apple to scream at and demand a refund)?
    Thanks for any ideas

Rita, there are a bazillion things that could have gone wrong and maybe the AppleCare tech was just interested in getting you off the phone with the easiest and quickest solution. Then again, if/when we finally get this sorted out you may wish you had done exactly that Having performed hundreds of upgrades (no exaggeration, I'm a tech) I've not seen too many failures and those that have been brought to me typically involved outdated software that crashed the system, various hardware issues, and software still installed that should have been removed (so called haxies).
Since I wasn't there to watch SL install I'm going to assume for the moment that it installed normally. Restart your computer and then immediately hold down the left shift key. This is a safe boot. The three main things that Safe Boot will do is to perform a directory check of your hard drive, erase some cache files (which might be the cause of your problem), and it will not load some drivers and non-Apple startup items (which also might be the cause). (If you don't have automatic log-in turned on, after you select your account and type in your password press the shift key again so the startup items won't load.) Safe Boot isn't a normal startup so don't be surprised that you cannot go online, print, or do some other things. This is for diagnostics only.
If your computer successfully gets to the Finder, immediately restart as normal and see what happens. If it beachballs again, restart in safe mode and once it gets to the Finder, open the System Preferences and remove all the startup items from your account because one of them may be the problem. Then try restarting again.
Your backup program is Backup (which version I don't know) and I think it was part of the MobileMe package. It isn't the best backup solution in the world but it does save the important data.

  • Using ARD to change user settings

I was wondering if it was possible to use ARD to change the desktop background for all users? This kinda turns into two questions for me since I know nothing about Macs. First, is there an "all users" settings type thing at all, if so where? Second, is there some sort of config file that would store the location of the desktop background so I could eventually copy a new background to a location and change that file to point to the new file, thus upgrading the desktop background?

    Hi,
I have created a script to change other functions of remote macs. So this version is an adaptation of my script to your needs. Note that I am changing the admin password. For other user just change the admin name and password accordingly.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
    Start of Applescript------
    property my_ip : ""
property my_password : "the admin password"
property new_password : "the new admin password"
    tell application "Remote Desktop"
-- this is a fixed group of macs that should be added or deleted as needed in ARD
set the_list to computers in computer list "to change"
repeat with i from 1 to number of items in the_list
    set this_item to item i of the_list
-- if mac offline skip it
if the status message of this_item is "Available" then
set my_ip to Internet address of this_item
-- log as admin into remote mac
    set my_log to "ssh admin@" & my_ip
    tell application "Terminal"
    activate
    -- log as admin
    do script my_log
-- there is in some cases the security issue.
-- RSA key fingerprint is ... Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
    delay 3
do script "yes" in window 1
    delay 3
    -- enter the password
do script my_password in window 1
-- do whatever in the remote mac, in this case change admin password
do script "passwd" in window 1
-- Ternimal asks fro existing password
do script my_password in window 1
    delay 2
    -- Enter new password twice
do script new_password in window 1
    delay 2
do script new_password in window 1
    delay 5
-- close connection to remote mac
do script "exit" in window 1
    end tell
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell

  • Using ARD to copy files remotely?

    Hi,
I was thinking it is possible to use ARD to copy files from my home imac, when I am in the office using my macbook? Or this can only be done when I am on the same network? Thanks in advance.

Should work fine provided you have ARD fully working between the two sites.

  • ARD 3.2.2 client update: new lab problems

I've been using ARD for years to manage my Mac labs. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes it didn't. I even beta tested it once so I am aware it's not Apple's most glorious piece of software.
My latest problems began after updating the clients to 3.2.2 (using ARD, of course). (Clients are running both 10.5.4 and 10.5.5.) I can see the clients in the Scanner list (without the ARD version listed for some reason), activate them in the list (after some difficulty), observe and control them -- but I CANNOT perform the other tasks listed under the Manage menu (copy items, empty trash, restart, etc.). If I attempt to do so, I am told they are Offline (when they obviously are not, since I can observe/control them) and that the task is not supported.
Reinstalling the 3.2.2 client updater manually at a workstation does not fix the problem, nor does repairing permissions. Client settings under the Sharing System Prefs panel are the same as they ever were (ie, I am allowed to do the things I am attempting to do).
I have tried this with ARD admin 3.2.2 from an Intel iMac set up as a Leopard Server, as well as from a station in the lab itself. Same problems.
Other more advanced tricks have been discussed in other threads here, but I have never had to go to those lengths to get ARD to work. IMO the 3.2.2 updater messed something up.
FWIW, here is the results of my permissions repair on a station where I used ARD to update the client:

    Permissions repair complete

    Hi,
You mentioned the machines are all from a single image. I realize you are an experienced ARD user. However, there are quirks in this app at any stage of development. I'm sure you already applied a unique name to the shared network name and have no DHCP conflicts as well as checked that all the accounts, not just the admin account that permissions are checked. Although you may have all the correct ports addressed and configured, there is no accurate accounting for the gremlins. These play havoc across the network. Sometimes the only thing you can do is go to the machine and walk through the settings as if it was the first time. I can't tell you how many times a problem has resolved itself after just logging into the admin and redoing the settings. I mean the exact settings that are already selected. Sometimes the settings were actually wrong, even ones that came from an identical image. Like forgetting to select the observe and control selections in the sharing options for all the users. Other times it was simply deselecting and reselecting the options and restarting that snapped the machine out of the funk.
Aside from the occasional discovery of admin setup issues, I live by the motto "the simplest solutions are usually the best, and should be tried first". Glitches do happen though. Sometimes running the scanner and reselecting and dragging the same machine into your user lists can refresh a connection that is not acting properly. I have detected countless quirks that cause strange side effects. Do a get info on the specific machine and delete the IP, then make sure you have the "name".local in the DNS name field. Re-enter the admin or try a user account name in this experiment and test this. This has given me clues to setup issues before having to go to the machine. I know this stuff sounds simplistic but it has solved most of my issues.
    Good Luck
