Is it safe yet?

Hi,
I have Tiger on my iMac and want to upgrade to Leopard but am concerned about all the problems being posted here. I am particularly interesting in Time Machine but hear a lot of problems reported there too.
I would imagine that a fresh installation would go smoother than a conversion.
I don't "need" it and the last I heard was to wait.
So... *Is it safe yet for a Tiger user to upgrade to Leopard* without taking serious risks?
Thanks!

Unless you had/have a device or program that isn't/wasn't supported by Leopard, it has been safe to upgrade since day one. These two caveats have always been true and will always continue to be true of upgrades. So do your homework. Make sure your printer and scanner have Leopard ready drivers. Make sure the programs you depend on are Leopard ready, have updates, or you are ready and able to buy the upgrade that is Leopard ready.
Apple has made upgrade the default installation method since 10.1 but shortly after Leopard was released changed its recommendation for Leopard to +Archive & Install+. This is the upgrade method I have always recommended BTW. It will create a brand new System and Library putting the old System and Library folders into a +Previous System+ folder. All Apple's programs (Mail, Safari, etc) will be installed in your Applications folder. The last step is that your current accounts will be recreated in the new OS and all your files and network/mail settings will be kept. Your old printer settings will be lost (because new drivers are needed) and you may find that a couple programs need to be reinstalled (but this beats having to reinstall and serialize every program you own). Depending on how many programs and how much data you have, this could take up to 6-7 hours or as short as 2-3.
Now, having said all this, I'll ask you one simple question and engage in a mild rant. You do have a complete backup of your computer, right? If you don't already have one, go out and get an external hard drive (preferably FireWire) that is at least as big as your current hard drive - and if you intend to use TimeMachine twice as big is even better. Format the drive as HFS+ Journaled (this will make it ready for TimeMachine). Then download Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! and clone your computer. Now you can safely upgrade knowing that if it goes all wrong you can erase and restore from the clone. You also have a fallback if you discover one of your programs or devices is Tiger only after all. Go ahead and start using TimeMachine and when you are confident that Leopard is fine and dandy you can erase Tiger from the drive.

  • Safe yet to buy MacBook Pro?

I've been reading the various threads about the battery, whine and other problems and am wondering if it is safe yet to buy a MacBook Pro.I could probably hold off for another month but at that point will have to decide whether to buy a MBP or find a used G4.
Are the MBPs built more recently REALLY having fewer problems, than say the weeks 8-12 machines, or are the newer machines too new to have manifested the problems? Latter hard to answer I know but I'm looking for input.
    Thanx.
Ti Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Ti Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Kestrel,
I think it is safe to ignore what you read on these forums. I just received my 17" MBP, and it is flawless.
There is no "whine." Period. This MPB is a replacement for my final revision 17" Powerbook, and there is no discernable difference between the two, either in the sounds that it produces or the heat it generates. This last, in spite of the fact that the MBP lacks the rather large air "intakes" on the side that the Powerbook had. This leads me to believe that the CoreDuo requires less cooling than did the later G4s, and it follows that whatever temps these things achieve is normal and has been predicted.
I will say this: At one point, I took my Powerbook in to an Apple store to compare the display against a MBP. While there, I transferred one of my Desktop pictures over to the MBP via Bluetooth. I then compared the two displays, side by side, with the same pic set as the Desktop background. I really could only detect a marginal difference.
After having spent a day with the two machines at home, side by side as I migrated myself over, I have to say that the difference is, in fact, stunning! It's not so noticeable when one looks briefly at the two machines. Rather, it is revealed when I use the MBP for a while, then look over at the Powerbook. The Powerbook looks dim and washed out after getting used to the MBP. Dingy, in fact. Besides the speed, this is the one thing that stands out the most to me.
My Powerbook came to me in flawless condition. It has had quite a bit of use since I bought it (it survived a 10-week tour of the US with an opera company), but it is still in perfect condition. I neither expected, nor did I experience, any problems with it. The MBP has come to me in the same perfect condition, inside and out. I do not expect any more problems with it than I experienced with my Powerbook.
I do have to admit that most applications that must be run in Rosetta suffer for it. Anything that is Intel-native (Universal) simply screams (of course), but I have found that most PPC apps are discernably slower in Rosetta on the MBP than they were natively on the Powerbook. Mostly, this is detectable at launch; once an app is up and running it seems to respond well enough. Games suffer a great deal, though (Zero Hour is almost painful, compared to the Powerbook).
Rosetta does work, however. I have even managed, quite easily, to get Flip4Mac installed and working. When I want to watch video from the CNN website in Safari, for example, all I need do is launch Safari in Rosetta; the rest takes care of itself, and it is only slightly slower. The same holds true for viewing Windows Media files in Quicktime.
In short, I think the answer to your question is "Don't be silly, of course it's safe."

  • AirPort Utility 5.3.2--is it safe yet

About 3 weeks ago, I posted my travails after updating my TimeCapsule's firmware to the latest version and my AirPort Utility to 5.3.2. (I basically lost my entire wi-fi network--which came back only after downgrading back to APU 5.3.1, doing multiple resets, gnashing of teeth, mystical incantations and contemplating sacrificing my firstborn, which is inadvisable given that he's my only child and is 23). Every few days, Software Update pops up cajoling me to update AP Utility 5.3.2 and I keep telling it to get lost. Is it safe to update yet or should I wait for 5.3.3?
I also upgraded my iPodTouch 8GB to the 2.0 software, which for $10 got me access to all these cool new apps......and now it either can't see my wi-fi network or if it does, rejects my password (even though I enter it EXACTLY as I do on my computers. Tried every reset suggestion posted on these discussion boards, to no avail. Would I have to update AP Utility to 5.3.2 for my iPod to regain wi-fi access, and if so, how could I prevent 5.3.2 from taking down my entire network again? (If only the Geniuses made house calls....)
    Help!

I'm also one of the AirPort Utility 5.2.1 downgrade users, but it's because I've PPPoE issues with AX 6.3 firmware. And after downgrading to 6.1.1 firmware, the older AirPort Utility 5.3.1 couldn't setup the AX. So hence, the 5.2.1 downgrade from 5.3.1. But I just upgraded to AirPort Utility 5.3.2, and my PPPoE is working fine. But I still dare not yet to upgrade the AX firmware to 6.3.

  • What is Java and why do I need it, and is it safe yet?

It's my understanding Oracle has not put forth a true "fix" on the lack of security for Java. I don't really understand what Java is or why I need it, but what I don't want is something that allows cybercriminals a way into my computer.
I currently have Java disabled but strangely enough just today I received an alert that I had a Java update that I should download, (which I have not done as yet.)
    Would appreciate any assistance.
    Thanks,

You should always have the latest Java version installed (current is 7U45) even if you have disabled the Java plugin in Firefox or uninstall Java completely.
Note that current Firefox version will not enable the Java plugin.

  • Is the 01-10-2006 updater safe yet?

Back when the 01-10-2006 updater came out, I was one of the people who had major issues with it. My iPod wouldn't connect to my computer; neither iTunes nor my computer would recognize it.
Two new iTunes versions have been released since then, and on a hunch, I plugged the iPod in, and amazingly, it worked. I did a complete system restore, since I had (or at least I assume it was me) corrupted many files on the iPod when I was struggling to get it to connect previously (pulling it out while it was still connected since it wouldn't stop trying to connect, etc).
The iPod is now plugged in to the wall, totally back at factory settings. My question is: with the new iTunes versions, is it safe to use the 01-10-2006 updater now? Or will I only have the same problems all over again if I stick it back on?
Should I put on the 6-26-2005 updater instead? My only problem with this is that the file on my computer (Start - Program Files - iPod - 6-26-2006) doesn't seem to work when I open it on my computer ("iPod Manager Internal Error"), but the one prior to that, the 7-15-2004 update, seems to be functioning. Can I even redownload the 6-26-2005 update anywhere else on the internet?
One last question - I have 8000+ songs for my 40gig iPod...will putting them all back on at once damage it? I've noticed it's become really hot when I put on 1000 songs at one time in the past.

I don't know why you were having a problem with 3 and 10.6.4. I had no significant problems with this combination, especially with the updates to 3. Now, with 3.1, things are much swifter.
I did have one problem, which you can read about at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2620852&tstart=0. This was to do with my Photo sync using iTunes and my iPod Touch. This problem surfaced after I installed 3.1, but I don't know if it was related. In all other respects, 3.1 seems to rock.

  • 10.4.9 Update, not safe yet?

    Hi,
I'm using my PowerPC Xserve as mail server, so after having read some of the threads here: Is it safe to install the update or should I wait for another patch to come out??
I don't want to disable my mail server by applying the update ...
    Thanks,
    Jerome

im running 10.4.8 on my servers
thinking about the 10.4.9 update but i have made a few bit of modification to the mail configurations specifically postfix. am i right in thinking that the update will over write my postfix config file?
i looked at the update kbase here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304789
and it doesnt look like its really got much in it that would be better than the 10.4.8, so i think ill stick with if it aint broke dont fix it unless anyone has some good points to make about it?
    Cheers,

  • Re: 4.1 - Is it safe yet to re-install Premiere CS4?

    Hi,
I was one of the unlucky ones who couldn't persuade CS4 to render ANYTHING out of Adobe Media Encoder!!
Eventually just went back to CS3 which works just fine (after a huge amount of time wasting and hassle!!!)
Does the 4.1 update fix this issue?
Is it safe to re-install CS4? (My beta testing days are now over).
    Any advice / experiences?

I have seen an improvement with update 4.1 with HDV
At this point my computer is still to slow to edit HDV and is only working with SD for now.
But I did see it get better where as before I couldn't even play the HDV file.  Now it plays but not in real time.
My system is old for CS4 and I plan to build a new system soon.
Harm has a really good article on building a new system.
Here is the specs for my current system:
    Dell XPS  2005
    Windows XP  32bit
    Media Center Edition
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3
Single Core Pentium 4 CPU 3.4 GHz with Hyperthreading
    3 GB of RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT  1024MB
If your system is better the upgrade should help.

  • Is it safe yet to upgrade?

Fully loaded late 2013 macbook pro retina here. Waiting patiently for the kinks to be worked out before upgrading. I have an iPhone 6 as well so I look forward to the goodies. I also perform regular time machine back ups..
I can wait though until the time is right to avoid issues.
So, that being said.. is the water warm enough yet?

I certainly think so.  I had the Yosemite download started within the first hour of its availability.  It's not perfect (I can't get all the handoff features to work), but it works just fine!

  • Are the iMacs safe yet? i

Will apple let us know when they have moved beyond the agere chipset? Any word on when it will be safe to purchase a new iMac that will work with Logic 8?

As a shareholder, I'd encourage you to make your voice heard! This is a serious issue, and there are quite a lot of customers affected by this issue.
I just took two MacBook Pros (a previous gen. model and my new Agere-based model) and a Presonus Firebox interface to my local Apple Store to demonstrate the issue. Within 10 minutes, every employee in the store was gathered around in shock when I showed them the problem on every Apple laptop in the store. The older model worked fine, as did Mac Pro towers, but MacBooks and MacBook Pros simply do not see Firewire audio interfaces made by most companies. This makes them utterly useless as Firewire audio solutions.
Feel free to contact me for more technical info - I've done quite a bit of research on this issue and I won't bore anyone with it here. Suffice it to say Apple has made a huge mistake with their current line of portables, and as a pro user, I hope and pray they make it right for current (and future!) customers...

  • CS3 Indexing - Is it safe yet?

I searched the forums and found lots of older messages about problems with CS3 and indexing bugs. Are these old issues or still relevant?
I just downloaded CS3 update 5.0.3 which says it addresses indexing problems. Should I believe it? I have to have a finish a 14 chapter index this weekend and have half of it finished in CS3. I could apply the patch and keep going or ... what? :-)
    TIA

Thanks all for contributing. Unfortunately, my experience with desktop publishing software reaches back to the days of Aldus PageMaker running on Windows runtime and Ventura Publisher for DOS. So, there's an ingrained distrust of "fixes" that end up breaking other things. Hence my apprehension and searching for assurances before I jumped in. That being said, here's the results of my experience.
Considering the magnitude of the problem with indexing, I'm really surprised that I didn't hear from any of the members who complained so much in the earlier archived threads. Anyway, unpatched, the program is useless for "generating" an index from multiple docs. You can do the marking functions for each chapter, but it doesn't compile correctly. It may look like it is, but it definitely isn't. Apply the CS3 5.0.3 patch and it works like a charm!
I finished the index on Sat., night. However, I could have been finished that afternoon or even Fri. afternoon had I known what I know now. I hope that my experience helps someone in the future.

  • Is it safe yet?! If not, then EFFING WHEN?!

I just noticed that 7.0.2 has been released. Fantastic. But, before I go and download it like I did with 7.0.1 (which in turn lead to the poop hitting the fan), I'd love to know whether or not it will be worth it? Technological advancements such as new and updated versions of itunes should be considered "progress", right? Weird that v.6 is the only version that seems to work properly...
    Dell Dimension 8300   Windows XP

Maybe for a Mac.... simply not a reliable piece of software for us Windows folks. Some have had luck with iTunes, while a lot of us have had troubles. I would agree that iTunes 6 was stable and caused me no problems.
I had similar problems as MagicBob. There were no solutions offered that fixed my iTunes 7 issues. I had to format and reinstall XP on two systems that iTunes 7 wreaked havoc on. Failed installation of iTunes lead to system instability.
I would call iTunes 7 a step backwards for Apple. I'll keep monitoring the forum here. It'll take a lot of convincing for me to upgrade to iTunes 7. Spending 6 hours to reinstall XP, tweak it and load up all my files is too much time to spend on a gamble that iTunes 7 works.

  • Safari 3.2.1 is it safe to install yet

Is it safe yet to install Safari 3.2.1 on my PB G4?
I tried installing 3.2 a few weeks ago and it was a disaster.
I ended up reinstalling OS 10.5 from disk and working my way back up to OS 10.5.6 w/Safari 3.1.2.
I do not want to go through that again if the bugs aren't out of 3.2.1 yet.
    Thank for any info
    Greg

    Hi
I use Safari 3.2.1 on 3 machines with no slow-down on any of them. All machines are using OS X Leopard. In this forum you are going to get a steady diet of problem situations - that's what the boards are for. I'd say most users (there are millions out there) seem to use Safari without significant issues.
If Safari slows down your system and you hear hard drive clicking, the hard drive may have directory errors (Disk Warrior is a great product for this task) that ought to be corrected before they cascade into bigger problems.
One area impacting Safari 3.2.1 has been 3rd party add-ons (not supported by Apple) which in some instances proved incompatible with the latest version. Most developers upgraded their add-ons to remedy the problem. Some didn't - AcidSearch is one example.
Another has been the new Fraudulent Site check. Some have had to disable this feature because of complications between their Internet Provider and the Google site search mechanism. This ought to be remedied in the coming months.
Adobe Flash ought to be at version 10. Version 9 has proved buggy. Important on a Flash install to "repair permissions" prior to a Safari restart.
The system cache at times may require a reset (using a Utility app such as OnyX is great for clearing the system caches).
Also, Safari benefits from house cleaning via the "Reset Safari" option in the Safari Menu (e.g. web icon database ought to be reset every couple of months, cache ought to be emptied daily, and no sense in maintaining history files over 7 days).
Firefox is a stand alone browser. It does not interact with other Apple apps. Safari by contrast accesses the Address Book, iTunes, Mail etc. So the overall health of the system is paramount for Safari to function without issues.

  • Is iPhoto '11 safe to install yet?

It been a couple months since the release. Ive heard and read many horror stories about losing photos, computers slowing down, and computers and iphoto crashing.
Is it safe yet to install iPhoto '11? Have there been any solutions? Have any problems been diagnosed to an actual cause?
    Thanks in advance!!!

After spending a ton of time reading up about it, I decided to load iLife 11 today.
    1. I did a back up (I use time machine/time capsule)
    2. I installed it.
    3. Immediately loaded the software update after install. Didn't open any programs first.
    4. Opened iPhoto 11, crossed my fingers, said it was ok to upgrade my library.
All the photos were there. But I noticed they looked blurry. Did some research online and others had this issue. It seemed to be getting resolved by doing a force quit. So I did the force quit. When I opened it again, they were all clear.
I tested the Facebook upload. That seemed slow. Forced quit iPhoto again and then launched it again, tried Facebook upload again and it was very quick.
Tested an upload to Flickr next and that seemed to work fine.
Tested mailing photos from with iPhoto with both my mobile me and gmail account, and it worked fine as well - seemed pretty quick process to me.
It all seems to be working fine now for me after the software update and two forced quits.
