Is, in your opinion, my disk dying? I am concerned by the pretty high Raw_Read_Error_Rate and Seek_Error_Rate.
Also, I'm asking this because I'm experiencing a *LOT* of segfaults, core dumps and all sort of crashes and system hard freezes, apparently without a precise reason. Here is my other (hopeless) forum request about those problems: link.
I would like to understand if my problems may be related to an imminent disk failure and/or a SATA link failure.
Thanks.

I finished both short and extended SMART tests: according to results, all clear. Here the output of smartctl:

What degree of certainty gives me this? What should I try next in my attempt to exclude SATA link and disk failure problems?

  • Hard disk died--how to get iMovie back?

My hard disk died a year ago, and I lost all the contents of my hard drive, including iMovie. How can I get it back, short of purchasing iLife? I don't seem to have an iMovie software CD to replace the program.
    Thanks.
    PowerBookG4

If you have 10.2, iMovie is on the second OS X disk in the Additional Applications package. Just double click to run the installer and it will install iMovie 2. It will not touch later versions of iMovie, iPhoto etc that you already have.
You may (if you wish) also need to download a program called Pacifist, from here
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
Use Pacifist to open the Additional Applications package.
If you have 10.1, read here:

  • New Ultra320 disks die in D1000

I have a D1000 I am trying to populate with newish generic ST3300007LC 300GB Ultra320 SCSI drives. The setup works OK for a few seconds after boot or even a few minutes, but eventually the glm/scsi driver backs off from 40MB to 2MB/sec, making the device basically useless (see the errors below.) I have swapped out the D1000 chassis, D1000 controllers, disks, cables, and controller and consistently the right hand side of the D1000 is what dies. The left hand side keeps working at 40MB/sec.
    1) The manual does not illustrate it, but I am running the D1000 "split" with one cable to each interface of the dual channel HVD controller. (It only shows the split D1000 going to two separate hosts) I have wo dual channel HVD controllers in the host, so I tried both and also tried running each side of the D1000 to separate controllers. Both configs die.
    2) Are the new 300GB Ultra 320 drives just not going to work in the D1000? Is there an sd.conf parameter that can be set?

Yep, teminators and cables have been swapped.
I am reserarching to see if there are any sd.conf parameters I might be able to use to "fix" the SCSI bus at 40MB or even 20MB/sec, or at least prevent it from falling back all the way to SCSI-1. I recall doing this at some point long long ago to work around some similar bugs.
I have not tested with small, old disks - they are all Ultra 160, so who knows?
Right now the individual disks are all initially syncing up at 40MB, according to prtconf -v, so I assume there is just some kind of differential to LVD interface conversion inside the D1000, and not any kind of intelligent controller.
So using a single dual-channel controller card makes perfect sense. With both sides of the D1000 split, there is no problem achieving 40MB/sec on each side of the D1000, with all disks of the D1000 on the same channel, aggregate performance is limited to 40MB/sec for all disks in the bus. The PCI channel can easily keep up with 80MB/sec aggregate performance, and I can get achieve this until one of the channels errors out and falls back to SCSI-1.
You're not protected from a controller failure, but you're not protected from an enclosure failure eiither if you use two controllers. Unless of course it's an "unsupported" config this way and for some reason or another is not reliable.
I readily admit the configuration is a kludge, and not substantially cheaper than a modern SATA based array. But it's what my bosses would let me buy, so I'm stuck with it.

  • S.M.A.R.T. failed on main internal drive, is my disk dying?

    Hi,
Wanted to repair permissions before updating to 10.6.8 only to find a red message saying my main internal disk is damaged beyond repair, s.m.a.r.t checkup has failed.
I was able to repair damages on the HD with disk utility but not the media drive.
My iMac works fine, no slow-ups, no bugs, no freezes, nothing, only the message saying my disk is damaged.
I have an iMac i7 2.8 GHz (late 2009) with 1To media drive with a HD with 99,86 Go running 10.6.8. (I was able to update), 4 Go 1067 mHz DDR3 Ram.
I consider my iMac like new, still have 629 Go available disk space.
Should I ignore this message since every thing seems in working order or I am looking for trouble?
    Thank's

I would say to replace the HD. You can run additional tests in Apple Hardware Test to verify and also download and SMART Utility at:
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
BTW If the machine is covered by AppleCare then this will certainly be covered.
Of course make sure the system has at least one viable backup using either Time Machine or a bootable clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner or preferable both TM & the clone.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for your answer.
The problem is that they sent the disk to the US and are expecting to get a new one in a few weeks (yes, I'll be that long without my computer).
Does anyone know what Apple does to dead disks when they get them?

  • IMac G5 20". Disk died. Machine won't boot. Can't see replacement drive.

Machine was on, but frozen. I power cycled and it wouldn't boot. I removed the drive and put it in an external SATA case and was able to mount it on my MBP and copy 50GB of stuff off. I'll pick through it later. I got a new drive at Fry's and put it in. I popped in the Tiger install disk and ran Disk Utility. It didn't even show the internal drive. I ran System Profiler and the Serial ATA section said "No information available." Uh-oh. Is the interface fried? I bought the machine in March 2005 so it's not that old.
    Thanks for any help,
    Al

I have a replacement disk. Easy enough to install.
I checked again. I can't verify the other end of the drive cables. They disappear under the motherboard and I just don't want to tear the whole thing apart. I notice that many capacitors on the motherboard have bowed tops when they should be very flat.
While an external FW drive would probably work, the speed of the interface would be a limiting factor as the drive itself claims 1.5Gb/sec or 3Gb/sec. I wonder if that's just the drive, or the interface into the machine itself.
I checked the repair extension programs. These specific symptoms do not match the documented issues. The machine can boot a Tiger install DVD just fine. It's just the %&$&^* SATA interface itself.
    Thanks for the suggestions,
    Al

  • MacBook hard disk just died

Guess what? After suffering from the worst case of RSS, which led to two logic board replacements, after one palm rest, keyboard and trackpad area replacement due to discoloring, after all that suffering and lost time, after suffering from the huge quantities of heat produced by the MacBook which letd to a crack in the 100% wooden desk I put it on, I now, yes me, get a question marked folder when I start my macBook. Aparently the hard disk just died!
I tried everything, there's no way any application from the MacOS Disc 1 becomes aware of the hard disk's existance now, it's just gone forever.
It really makes one think about the quality of the parts used to make the MacBook and recent Apple hardware.
I know I'll go next week to the Apple rep to ask for the disk replacement that will take some time to get here (and surely they will send me the same 60Gb when they do send it) and then reinstall the whole thing.
I just wonder what will come off next??
    Best,
    Pedro
MacBook (Week 20, Replaced LogicBoard twice), White 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 2Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Also: PowerBook G4, Airport Express, iPod Nano

Yeah they will change it, but to my point again, what will come off then? and will it be on warranty when that happens? And what about my lost time, files, work, money, life?? —This is getting to my nerves the guys at the Apple shop are like: Hmm, here comes the MacBook guy again!?!?!
I didn't drop it, I treat it like it's my baby. It just died there sitting on the desk.
What kind of crappy hard drives are they putting in this machines, that last just seven months?
Is this the next RSS, behold the new HDDS (Hard Disk Dying Syndrome!)??
    Best,
    Pedro

  • Recurrent dying hard disks

Last week I turned on my iBook (800MHz G4 12-inch) and the hard disk started spinning up very rapidly. When logging into my user account it started 'squealing' before resuming the fast hard disk spinning, and the computer would not respond.
I started up with the apple hardware test, and running the quick test got the error "2STF/4/3: ATA- 100 ata- 6 - Master". Running the test a second time gave "2STF/1/4: ATA- 100 ata- 6 - Master".
I realise this is an issue with the hard disk. However, I then restarted with the 10.4 DVD and ran disk utility. It took half an hour to actually find the hard disk, and failed to repair the disk, but I did manage to reformat and reinstall the OS. Now disk utility reports no problems with the hard disk (even SMART verified) and there are no errors with apple hardware test.
This is not the first time I have had this problem. The hard disk died with the same error coming up at the end of last year. The hard disk was replaced at an authorised apple repair centre, only for it to die again and get replaced a second time at the same repair centre. It happened again a few months ago, but I was able to reformat it as described above. So this latest episode will be the forth time. I have booked it in to get repaired again, but I am doubtful this will resolve the problem.
These hard disk crashes usually occur without warning, and involve the loss of anything that I have not backed up. This is a problem since I use my iBook extensively for university and my job (in fact the original crash included the loss of most of my course work).
Is there a limit to the number of times applecare will repair a defective computer before replacing it? Or should I cut my losses, cancel applecare, and get another mac, since this is the first time I've ever had problems with an apple product?
    Cheers,
    Malcolm

Well I the repair centre looked at my list of problems, and instead of just replacing the hard disk, they ran apple diagnostic software (a bit like the apple hardware test but takes about 5 hours to run) and it turns out there was a problem with the logic board. So the logic board is going to get replaced, and hopefully everything will be great.
Laura, you could suggest this the next time your iBook needs fixing. As for the iMac, hopefully that was a one off. Good luck

  • Satellite L670 - Hard Disk Dead after 8 months only

    Hi,
this morning I had to retunr my laptop due to bad hard disk problem. After 8 months, it's dead already.
The positive points are: I am still under warranty and second the toshiba software hilighted me on time, allowing me to back up my data before the crash. Tks Toshiba for this tool, very usefull.
The question is, how can a hard disk die that quick after just fews months ?
Bad luck or bad use ? I am wondering.
I wish to have a feedback from those who owns same model, L670 (windows 7), to understand if this problem is commun or if I was unluckily concerned.
Also, if there are possible solutions to avoid HD stress in the daily use ? Like for example, reduce writing on it (back up of blu-ray using AnyDvD HD ON hd, then cut&paste to external HD), or to not connect too often external hard disk to avoid electricity surcharge if any ?
In future, will I have to perform chkdsk more often ? Defrag ? If yes, at which frequency ?
This is my 3rd laptop dying, Sony VAIO = mothercard dead after 1.2 years, Fujitsu Amilo xi = explosed after 3 years, and now Toshiba HD after 8 months.
From 900EUR up to 1600EUR, I do not see a significative resistance of one of those models, Sony was the badest ever in terms of video card longevity and compatibility (games unplayable after 2 months, no driver update), keyboard "painting" was a mess with deterioration after fews months compared to Fujitsu and Toshiba (no pb). Toshiba L670 more recent, was the best in terms of game compatibility.
What to do ? Stop buying laptop or use it only fews hours a day with a PC on top ?
For time beeing I can't afford to have a PC + a laptop as I am unemployed, surviving with 10EUR/day,
time to find a job again.
Despite this situation, I managed to buy new Zelman notebook cooler for my Toshiba at around 40/50EUR, but, it didn't help apparently.
Tks for feedback about L670 duration life, and particulary HD problem + best use to protect it.
    Guillaume

    You're not the only one.
I bought an L670 in September last year. It was strictly for home use as replacement for a desktop PC, so it was never moved.
Just after a few weeks things started to go wrong: boot fails, programs crashing, Windows 7 crashing...
It's almost 7 months now since purchase and I'm writing this message on the very same notebook with 'Hard Disk Sentinel' running in the background, reporting more bad sectors every day. It tells me that hard disk health is now down to only 9% and that it has an estimated 14 days to live.
Since the notebook is technically still running fine, I don't think I can have the HDD replaced under warranty or am I wrong? Does the HDD have to cease working alltogether before I can have it replaced under warranty?

  • Refund for 10.8.5 Upgrade?

Last week I paid to upgrade my laptop from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5, not realizing that a free update was coming only days later. Is there a way for me to get rebate. I certainly got no value out of using 10.8.5 for less than a week.
