Is my mac 64 bit?

Hi guys!
Ive got an Intel Core Duo 2GHz macbook. Is this 64 bit or 32 bit?
Anybody watched the Keynote! How fantastic are some of the new features! I cant wait!
I love my macbook and Tiger is the best operating system! Much better than vista! I should think Leopard with make it even better! Microsoft will be catching up for years to come!
Thanks for your help guys!
Dave

Core Duo is a 32-bit processor. The Core 2 Duos are 64-bit.
Fortunately you won't be missing much since there are few 64-bit applications available. I wouldn't expect to see a big rush to convert existing apps to 64-bit unless doing so would make for major speed improvements.

  • How can I see which and how many iCloud accounts have been created on my Mac?

I have reached the limit of iCloud accounts that can be created on my Mac (bit of a shock, I was blissfully unaware that there is a limit). In the past I had an iCloud account for each user but have since consolidated the users, now I am wondering if there is some way of seeing which accounts are attached to my Mac ID.
Additionally if I delete some of those iCloud accounts, does the available limit reset? (From posts it seems not, but no real clarity on the issue).
    Thanx

AFAIK this information is not available, but in any case there is nothing you can do once the limit has been reached. Of course you can check which accounts are signed in, but not accounts which may have been created but signed out from. Deleting accounts won't reset the limit, it's tied to the hardware (not the user account).
If you want another account the only way is to create it on another device: then you can sign into it on your Mac.

  • HT201593 How to transfer photos from a Mac to my iPhone via USB?

I know how to transfer photos iPhone --> Mac, bit I can't find instructions anywhere for transferring photos Mac --> iPhone, not via USB, which one would think is the fastest and safest alternative.
Running latest Yosemite, all apps up to date + iPhone up to date as well.
    Please advice

Sync the phone to iTunes. Configure iTunes sync for Photos to include the photos you want to transfer. Or you put your photos into iPhoto and simply sync from iPhoto as the source.

  • How can I retrieve songs from an Apple ID based on a disabled hotmail account?

I have an old apple ID from a hotmail account that I had to shut down due to security reasons (it was hijacked). My Mac bit the dust but I was able to recover the hard drive and reimage it on a new Mac. The new Mac no longer recognizes my old Apple ID, my hotmail account has been terminated and now I can't access 1000s of songs as it no longer recognizes my password. I can't reset the password because I can't get into my old email. Pretty sad, huh? Help?

Thanks but no, that allows me to change my current Apple ID. I need to be able to get access to songs purchased on my old Apple ID. Unfortunately, I can't re-authorized this old account because I had to get rid of it (because of the hijacking of my hotmail account) and because my old computer literally bit the dust (can't restart it). Pretty nasty, huh?

I am trying to install a new version of photoshop and it says I need at least 1GB of RAM or more before I can - I've checked my 'about this mac' bit and it says I have 768MB DDR SDRAM.
What do I do to give me more memory space?
Thank you for any help - I'm depserate to road-test my new Photoshop!!

    Hi Laura,
    Call OWC here:

  • Can someone help me send mail using SMTP server?

I am having the most frustrating problem with SMTP outgoing email account.  I use GoDaddy's Webmail (smtp.secureserver.net) and I receive all my emails through Apple Mail but I cannot send any.  I haven't been able to for about two weeks now, aside from 3 or 4 fleeting windows of time when I could.  Almost all of the time I try to send my emails, an error message says my outgoing account is offline.  I've been on the phone with GoDaddy's tech support three times this week and did everything we could think of, which include these steps:
-Force Quit Apple Mail --> Restart Computer
-Change Default Ports to a specific one and uncheck "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)"
    -Check "Use only this server"
-Delete account completely from Apple Mail and re-load (which I had to go into Time Machine to recover messages, and lots a bunch in the process ugh!)
Nothing works!  I depend on this email for my business, and I rely heavily on Apple Mail for this account.  All of my other email accounts that I pull through Mail work fine, but of course they are not SMTP outgoing.  Please help...I feel like I've tried everything and nothing works permanently.

At this point there are 2 possible causes to your problem:
    Apple Mail
Connectivity between you and the SMTP server
I can't help with (1) as I use Thunderbird as my mail client (the biggest advantage being I can take my mail files and move between different versions of Mac OS X). If you suspect that your problem is due to Apple Mail, then using another email client to send a test message will prove the point. If it works, then the problem lies with Apple Mail and somebody else will have to chip in. If it still fails, then there may be connectivity issue between you and the mail server.
If you google "telnet smtp test" (without the quotes), you will find many articles showing you how to test an SMTP connection using telnet. Don't be put off by the fact that many of the articles assume you are running Windows. The only Mac bit you need to know is that telnet is a command line utility accessed via Terminal. The rest is generic.
Telnet will allow you to interact with the mail server a line at a time and show you exactly what and where the problem is. If you get an unexpected response from the server, go back to GoDaddy and show them the output. If you don't get any response at all (i.e. "telnet smtpout.secureserver.net 25" just hangs), then take it up with your ISP as you are simply not getting through to the server.
    Good luck.

  • 9914 and sending data back across the bus.

We are programming a device with the 9914 chip, and we can write commands to the device, but are having trouble getting the device to write data back. When using the interactive tool, by executing "ibrd 100" is the device addressed as the talker? What is a fairly straight forward method for passing 1 byte of data from the device to the controller? We have a routine that waits till the TA bit in ISR1 sets, before it placed the byte in the CDOR. But the TA bit never sets, even after we execute ibrd 100 with the interactive tool. Is there something else we need to do? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Rick

Enabling interrupts should not have an affect. Can you give me a summary of how you are setting up the chip? For example, what are you setting in the ADR register? This register sets the addressing mode of the chip. If you are not setting it up correctly at address 3, you would, of course, not get an interrupt.
So, lets assume you are setup correctly. There are a couple of different things to try.
    1) You can look at the MAC bit in ISR0. This is the My Address Changed bit, which should set everytime your addressing mode changes.
    2) Note that the NAT9914 does not have static bits in the ISR registers. If you read a register, the bit will clear automatically. Just in case something else asserted along with MA and you hand
led it but forgot to check MA, you will lose it.
    3) You can try setting MA IE. This will not generate an interrupt if you have interrupts disabled, but it will cause an NDAC holdoff. In this case, the ibrd 100 should timeout on the host side if the device is actually doing the holdoff.

  • SFP question

I have two 9222i fiber switches.  I am using single mode fiber between them.  I have been having problems with a link on them. I keep getting this error
FCP WEARNING: MAC Bit error exceeded threshold – kernel
I looked it up and found that it is usually a physical problem.  Is that correct?  Also what is the best SFP I should use for this link.  I want to buy new ones.

Yes, the connector to the SFP is an LC, the GBIC is SC. Your cable is an SX-Multimode with LC connector.

Do not make your Mac bite off more than it can chew: do one update at a time. Some general guidelines on updating:
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • IChat - Failure to close

I have recently installed the new OS X V10.5. I was trying my iChat and then went to close it by placing it in the 'trash' and it would not close or shut down. I also tried from the top left hand where it has the name 'iChat" and tried from there. It still would not. I then tried to shut down the whole computer and it would not allow me to.
I was forced to do a 'hard shutdown'.
Anyone want to try and help me.
    Thanks
    Jim

I have seen several threads with Phone Forwarding listed as pat of the issue (If not the whole issue).
I am not sure that is relevant here.
I have not seen this error myself.
You seemed to have covered most of what any of the regular Posters would have suggested.
There are circumstances where one iChat Screen Name will have issues where another one will not.
AIM periodically clear out what they consider to be Unused Screen Names and release them back for re-registration.
Now this has a knock on effect to the people who might have one of those names in their Buddy List still as they are removed from there as well.
This tends to mean your Buddy List is not accessible for a while.
In the past AIM did this in Early December (pre Christmas) and at 4 monthly intervals after that.
When AIM started doing this it caused chaos as previously names had been "For Life"
The first time they also lost contact with the then @Mac.com data base.
The next December that had issues with all @mac .com names that contained more than 12 character before the @mac bit.
It has been smoother more recently as the early attempts also cleared out the largest amount of "dead" names.
It seems unusual that you are having what looks like a similar issue in Jan (Unless AIM have changed their timings on this).
Do you have another Mac User account on your Mac where you could test the Screen Name you are using ?
Any chance the Mac User account you are using has Parental Controls applied to it ?

  • Which laptop is best?

Have started to shoot with a Canon 7D and now needs a good laptop. Which Macbook is best for video editing in HD? Must have a laptop because I travel a lot. Also want to use Final Cut Studio. This whole Mac bite is new to me ... used the PC before.

Well, for starters, you're going to be transcoding all the files that come out of your 7D to ProRes, which means you'll need a beefy external drive, which means you'll want a FireWire 800 port, which automatically disqualifies the regular Macbook. To decide which Macbook Pro you want, I'd use this chart:
    http://store.apple.com/us/tab?node=home/shopmac/family/macbook_pro&tcid=tgtabcontroller&tab=2
...and weigh your own needs against it. All of them will run FCP. If you're interested in Color and Motion as well, the lowest end 13" model may not be the best choice.

  • Th e FIX?  A new Hard Drive?

First - what is the largest HD I can use? Any specs to avoid or get?
Second - I think this may make my computer more useable. It has been a crashy iMac - but so was my DVSE 400 - plenty of RAM, have tried PRAM zapping Desktop rebuild, defragging, etc. A few years back I suffered a complete HD failure, but ran First Aid three times and brought it back to life. I think it may still be a corrupted drive. BTW, I have clean installed a few times and I get a decent system for a few days, then it reverts back to its old tricks.
Third - what is REALLY frustrating is that my friend at work has an old PIII that had similar issues. He installed XP, and it is a rock now, and he is happy with a cheap fix. NOT MY APPLE! Tried to install Tiger, with right firmware, etc., and it wouldn't take. So much for the "easy to work with Macs" bit.

    Hi Brian,
First: The iMac cannot use more than 127GB of any given hard drive - this is due to a limitation in the iMac's drive controller. No software/partitioning will get around this. Warnings about 7200 RPM drives being too hot tend to be false, as many new drives actually run cooler than the iMac's stock drive.
Second: What problems have you been having, specifically? Just random freezing/crashing? Anything else? Have you tried running Disk First Aid recently? I would suggest booting from your iMac Install/Mac OS 9 install or whatever CD and running Disk First Aid from there.
Have you tried backing up your data and then completely reformatting the drive? If there is significant corruption, this may be the best way to eradicate it.
Are there any third party drivers installed or hardware devices connected that could be causing problems?
Last thing, it could be dodgy RAM that's causing the freezes/instability, especially if the issues are not related to a specific application or whatever.
Third: I'm not sure why XP would help - perhaps your friend had a bad install of the previous operating system. You have said you've tried clean installs, so that isn't the issue for you.
What problems did Tiger give you, specifically? Mac OS X not wanting to install could be a symptom of dodgy RAM. Is the RAM the original that came from Apple or a third party? If it's from a third party, do you know the vendor?
Hopefully there's something in there you'll find useful...

  • Safari slow after ADSL upgrade

Recently upgraded from 2Mb ADSL to 8Mb.
Router tells me I'm getting nearly 7 Mb down and almost 500Kb up, downloading files is so much quicker.
However opening pages in Safari has slowed down to a state where it has become annoying. In essence pages load reasonably quickly once they start, it's just waiting for them to start that causes the delay.
Is there some setting somewhere to optimise Safari for my faster ADSL, or something else I need to do.

Don't think it's my router, I only have issue on one mac, however it's a connectix I think, but it supposed to be good for 8Mb, and yes I've tried resetting.
And you did a restart of the mac after you reset the router, I presume you also use an External Modem to connect & a router for wireless, access for the other macs is that correct ?
Are all the macs running the same os build, that could make a difference.
Find your router here & or modemRouters
    IPv4 Manual DHCP 10.0.0.x 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.2
Try setting it to "Using DHCP" (without manually address)
The IPv6 is not configured, correct? since the IPv4 is. If it is deselect that setting.
Yes manual DNS, it drops out if I don't, however did change it on this mac only a couple of weeks ago, my ISP was misdirecting my addresses or that's what they told me when I went to my own website and got someone else's (again only on this mac-bit strange I thought, but the alternate addresses they gave me did solve the issue, although I didn't need to alter them on any other mac)
The DNS # are always entered manually if that is what you meant.
I had a redirect issue and the new DNS #s given to me are to Opt out, so I presume you have the same sort of thing different for your location & ISP.
Please try another user or test account to see how Safari works there.
If you do not have another account.
10.4 & Adding a new user account to your computer
I have a dynamic IP. did clear cache in safari, but was reluctant to reset, I have difficulty in remembering all my passwords (should write the down I suppose), but I have done now, but no change
Dynamic IP address to be able to use applications that require a static IP address.
I understand your reluctance to Reset Safari. If there are old sites you do not use any longer or duplicates, wrong entries, etc, In Autofill trim that list that can slow thing down.
I use "Grab" in the Utilities folder to take screen shots of the names & passwords, since you do not have them jotted down that could be helpful.
I also take screenshots of network setting. Grab is cool!; )
Please try those settings in Network, do a reboot, see if that helps any,
I hope so, please let us know.

  • G4 450,1GB, 30GB + Tiger

Can I run Tiger on a circa 2000 G4 with a 450 (I think) processor, 1GB ram and a 30GB drive. I was planning on buying Tiger from the Apple Shop with the intention of running it on the G4. Will it run? Will it be usable?
Side Issue: whats the biggest HD I can install in this machine? Is it 120GB or hopefully a more reasonable 250+ GB??
Not sure of the video card installed

It's a small world, I work in Parkstone just off Ashley Road!
As for suppliers, I tend to get my stuff off the web. The following UK companies seem to be good for Mac bits:
    http://www.macheaven.co.uk
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk
I've ordered from MacHeaven before without any problems but have never tried MacUpgrades.
If your PowerMac meets the minimum requirements 10.4.x should work. At the end of the day, if you're going to use it as a server, all it needs to do is serve files which is mainly dependent on the hard drive capacity and speed. Lots of people seem to use their older Macs for this purpose (as general file servers or iTunes servers etc) where processor speed isn't that important. If you don't actually need the features of 10.4 though, perhaps a second hand (eBay?) copy of 10.3 or earlier would be a better choice (keep in mind the minimum requirements for the PCI card you buy though).

  • Spits out disc after restart...

While installing, it says 'Installation will continue after restart' or something or other, and then it restarts but then my mac ejects the disc by itself while on the grey screen, so obviously it can't continue.
I've tried starting it again but it just starts from the start again. And I've checked if it had finished but it still says I am on 10.5.7 on the 'about this mac' bit. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, i've tested it with other discs and it spits those out too when i do a normal restart.

    It is!?
Tryresatring it with another CD in it, video game, music whatever..... Does it spit it out?
If so you may have a problem with your drive....

I Want to use a boot camp partition so that windows can use all my ram (windows 10 is really slow running alongside Yosemite in virtualbox). Is there software that I can install or something special I can do to install windows in a way that it won't be able to access the files on the Mac side? The choice to install Windows is an invitation to security risks. It does not mean OS X does not have its own security risks. All OSes do. Windows has more widespread malware, viruses, etc. Windows has read-only access via Apple HFS+ driver to OS X volumes (this is installed as part of Bootcamp Drivers package).
    You have two choices,
    1. Install FileVault2 - OS X: About FileVault 2 - Apple Support.
    2. Convert your HFS+ volumes to CoreStorage. See the help about diskutil cs convert. Please also see https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/diskutil.8.html
    diskutil cs convert
    Usage:  diskutil coreStorage convert
            MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
            [-stdinpassphrase | -passphrase [passphrase]]
Convert a regular JHFS+ partition into a CoreStorage logical volume.
The file system must be mounted and resizable (i.e. Journaled HFS+).
Ownership of the affected disk is required.
Either method removes read-only access to OS X side.
