Is my picture data (tags, star rating) transferred using Windows Easy Transfer

Hi,
I bought a new computer and want to make sure that the tags and star ratings from my pictures are transferred to my new computer when I use Photoshop Organzier.  Will this be done simply by copying it using Windows Easy Transfer, or is there something special I must do?
Thank You:>

No. Use back-up and restore within Elements.

  • Can't send emails after migration from Vista PC to W7 PC. Tried Mozbackup and Windows Easy Transfer. Settings have transferred ok, it just won't send emails.

I recently migrated my Tbird from a Vista PC to a W7 PC using Mozbackup. Transfer was fine with all the settings transferred apparently correctly. But now I can receive emails but not send them. Sent emails show in 'Sent Items' but are not received the other end. Also tried the migration using the Beta 1 version of Mozbackup and also Windows Easy Transfer with the same result. IMAP and POP3 accounts are both affected. Neither can send emails. I get no error messages nor any bounceback.
Found on one forum that AVG can block outgoing emails so altered the AVG settings which seemed to solve the problem. The next morning the problem was back. I uninstalled AVG completely but it made no difference. I do have MicroSoft Sec Essentials but the problem was there before that was installed.
Using the BT Home Hub 5 on BT Infinity broadband. It can't be the router though as the old PC was sending emails fine. Although I did have the suspect AVG settings, removing it has not solved the problem.
The outgoing email settings seem to be fine. Any thoughts?

  • I have used the easy transfer wizard to export/import data incl TB, do I now move all the Mbox folders between profiles to move the mail contents?

I installed TB on the win8.1 box and have run the easy transfer wizard to import my data. The support item showing how to mark up my TB data for inclusion in the easy transfer wizard was very useful for this, but it does not describe how to get TB to recognise the imported profile.
I can see two profiles in the folder: C:\Users\Andrew\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles
and one appears to contain my old data, the files in the other profile are very small by comparison.
My question is whether I should move (or copy) the mail folders (or all folders/files) from the imported profile to the new one, overwriting any files where relevant? Alternatively, is there a way to get TB to recognise and use the imported profile?
I did look at the profile manager but it does not recognise the imported profile.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Andrew

I decided to do the following:
    1. renamed the profile folder created after installation of Thunderbird, to a name like nnnnn.default.bak
    2. renamed the imported profile folder to the recently created profile nnnnn.default.
    3. Restarted TB.
All working fine. All my email for the three email addresses has been transferred from the old computer to the new.

  • Data Connection to MS-SQL using Windows Auth from untrusted machine

We have an Excel Spreadsheet that uses a Data Connection to a MS-SQL database.  The database server is joined to our domain, and Windows Authentication is enabled.
Here is a sample of the connection string (with revealing info obfuscated):
    Description=DataConnection;DRIVER=SQL Server;SERVER=10.x.y.z;UID=domain_user;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Microsoft Office 2010;DATABASE=DatabaseName
And the Authentication Settings are set to "Windows Authentication"
This works perfectly fine from a domain-joined / trusted machine.  It doesn't even ask for credentials; it just works flawlessly when I hit Refresh.
It will work from a non-domain / un-trusted workstation, if I use SQL Authentication.  But we are trying to move away from that.
Likewise, it will from a non-domain machine using Windows Authentication if I use "runas" to launch Excel with domain credentials, as follows:
    "runas /netonly /user:domain\user %path-to-excel%\excel.exe"
However, using "runas" is a kludge, and our employees will almost certainly have issues... even if I were to create batch files to help automate it.
When launching Excel normally (without using "runas") from a non-domain machine, it gives this error when I hit Refresh:
Upon hitting OK, I have the option to un-check "Use Trusted Connection" and manually enter a user/password.  I put in a valid user that would be able to connect fine from a domain-joined machine, or that worked fine using "runas".
This is the error it gives with that:
At this point, I have not a clue what to do to get Excel to successfully connect with domain credentials from a non-domain machine.
    Ideas?

    Hi ltwally1,
From your description, you want to connect to non-domain machines using domain credentials. Based on my research, you can use the
ShellRunAs utility to achieve your requirement , it provides functionality similar to that of RunAs to launch programs as a different user via a convenient shell context-menu entry.
    Reference:
How to Run Programs as a Domain User from a Non-domain Computer.
However, if you still encounter issues by using  ShellRunAs utility, you can consider to use the Credential Manager built into Windows. For more details, please review
    this similar
    blog.

  • Has anyone encountered issues with Data Execution Protection (DEP) when using windows with Muse?

A week without my Muse. Please HELP. I am trying to be Patient.
Each time I try to open my muse it is freezing and shutting down right away. I open the file and it just freezes.  I get a window that pops up explaining DEP (I have tried to shut it off and it doesn't work). Has anyone else ever had this happen? I really want to get my Muse working again, its going on a week without. I have windows Vista, 32 bit. Since I did the recent updates its not working anymore. Can I roll back to an older version? Thank you.

So I found a fix to this myself. I found that others were having the same issue in Photoshop CS6 too. What I did was go to open the app, right click on the app icon, go to properties>compatibility>click the box for Compatibility Mode that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:: select your operating system (Mine was windows xp sp2). I also selected "Run as Administrator". So far it is working, I am upset that this was such a simple go around and I have been without my muse for over a month now.

  • Help Locating music files after transferring  using Windows Migrartion Assistant

I am new to mac I just bought a new MacBook Pro Friday. I have an iPod, iPhone, and an, iPad that I need to get setup on my Mac. The way I have them setup on my Windows 7 PC is I can select wich iTunes library to open by pressing the shift key while clicking on the iTunes icon. My first question is can I set that up like that on the Mac as well? Also I used Windows Migrartion Assistant to transfer my music files from my windows 7 PC to my Mac after the transfer was finished I cannot locate the music files on the Mac anywhre. Can anyone help.

Apparently the old external drive is going bad. I turned it off and waited an hour or so and restarted it, and all my files were back. I have copied them to my PC hard drive to be safe. However, my iTunes is now totally screwed up. Although the music files are back where they were (for now), iTunes cannot find any songs except the few that were copied to the new drive when I did the consolidate. I tried the Consolidate Library again and it stops because it cannot find the files. Am I going to have to point iTunes to the location of every song, one at a time, for over 2800 songs?

  • I lost my star rating system

I lost the star system rating on PSE 8.  All my pictures lost the star rating  How do I retrieve the rating back?

Obvious answer : if you made a recent backup, you should restore.
Otherwise, if you used 'write metadata to files', the rating may be still in the photo pictures. The problem is there is no reverse action to my knowledge : write file metadata to the database...
If you have written the metadata to files, you can check in the editor, using 'file  / file info' and the 'advanced' section in the left of the panel. It's in the xmp core properties, xap:rating
So you could create a new catalog and reimport your files, you'd recover tags and ratings,  but you'd lose stacks, version sets and albums.

  • Star rating changes date modified!

Why would changing a star rating on an image change the date modified and the sort order if I'm sorting by date modified. This makes no sense! I have not edited the file. Which file was edited last is far more important than when I gave a file a star rating.
Also when a file is saved as a different file type it loses it's star rating! So then I have to go back and rate it again and it changes the date modified!!!
I have used Bridge a long time and have not noticed it doing this. Am I just going nuts and it's always done it this way?

Yeah I've heard that before but it's really not. In date modified you want to know when the file was edited last not the star rating changed. I change star ratings all the time. That gives me another way to sort the images. The way it is now all the modified files get scrambled. It's frankly absurd. You would never see that in Photo Mechanic or iTunes, etc. If people want it to work like that it should be an option in preferences.

  • Why when using Adobe Bridge,  I apply a star rating,  the rating does not show up in Photoshop Elements? [tags]

Why when using Adobe Bridge,  I apply a star rating,   the rating does not show up in Photoshop Elements.  I use Elements as my organizer and Bridge to view as it is much more user friendly.  Anyone any solutions??

Most likely you have set the wrong file as the external editor. You don't want the obvious one; that's just a link to the welcome screen. Go back and choose this one, which is hidden away inside the folder Support Files:

  • EXIF data & tags

As  I understand it & please correct me if I'm wrong' the EXIF that the camera captures has all of the details about when the picture was taken.  Including time picture taken, camera settings & model number, if flash fired or not etc, etc.  Some cameras have much more data than others & this can include GPS location & perhaps even more that I'm unaware of.
When I use PSE & add tags I have the option of having the EXIF data on each individual photo file overwritten or added to what it had originally.  Is this correct?
Can I add to this data anything else?  What if any other programs read this data, Windows perhaps? And & if so how is this done? Can any other programs make use of this data?  For instance if I were to export a reduced size copy of one of my picture & emailed it to someone are they likely to be able to see this data?
    Thanks in advance

You are right about the data which is automatically saved from the camera settings.
Now, about how to add your own additional data to the files themselves:
1 - The main command to copy the data you have already added to your catalog is in the file menu, 'write metadata to files'. This adds important data such as tags, categories, star rating, captions, notes. This does not delete or replace already existing data. Your explorer/finder can find and show most of those added data, and many other softwares (photo or video editing for instance) can see them.
2 - Not everything you add in your catalog can be written like this : stacks, version sets, albums are not properties of a single file, they are ways for the catalog to group different pictures. If you 'write metadata to files' as explained above, and import the same files in a new catalog, that kind of information will be lost. This is the reason why it is better to use the integrated backup/restore function rather than re-importing in a new catalog.
3 - Some kinds of data like adding captions or changing the 'date taken' are automatically written to the files without the need to 'write metadata to files'.
4 - IPTC data : they are standard information used by professional photographers. In the right panel of the PSE11 organizer, if you choose the data tab instead of the keyword tag, you are shown every kind of information for your picture. There is an IPTC section. If you click on the ... (3 dots) next to 'IPTC', you open a dialog where you can document everything.
    That's the general idea

  • Using Aperture's star rating system

Forum member mrhooper posted [something in another thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13357908#13357908] which caught my eye. I didn't have time to respond, and now that thread is marked answered -- and my reply is slightly off-topic -- so I started this new thread in the hopes of learning how better to use the star rankings in Aperture.
Below is +what I do.+ I'm very curious to find out what you do -- or to hear any suggestions for making what I do more sensible.
Here is (part of) mrhooper's comment.
So we are now bringing over everything into Aperture and then rating images on a 1, 2, 4, 5 basis. Come on, if its a 3 make a decision. Everything else is a 9, and then the rejects are deleted. And then the trash is emptied and they are out of the library.
So we bring in the raw and then quickly rate, and I can't image a 400 shoot taking much more than 5 minutes rate.
Go through once for 1, then for 2, by then the 4 is obvious and the 5 we just love anyway. 9 everything else.
Fwiw (always an auspicious start to an Internet posting), I TOTALLY agree re: the wasted gamut of the seven-level rating system (that's rejected-unrated-1-2-3-4-5).
    Here's what I've settled on:
    • If I look at a picture, I rate it. Reject or save-and-decide-later. That's "9" and "1". So "unrated" is meaningful to me. It doesn't mean "less than rated", and, importantly, it doesn't mean "not-rejected"; it means, literally, not-yet-rated. (The problem solved here occurs when I am part way through tossing rejects from a Project and I am interrupted.)
Immediately after import, I add a Project description, assign a Place, and Stack images taken in burst mode or with any range of exposure settings. When I rate images in a Project, the first thing I do is go through these Stacks and select the most usable image from these minor variations (I need to do this before comparing un-like images in the Project). Within any Stack, I might have rejects ("9") and saves (1-star); the "pick" of the Stack gets a 2-star rating (1-star is already in use).
    • 1- and 2-star ratings +have the same value to me as images.+ The only difference is that 2-star images came from Stacks. (Those Stacks may contain 1-star images which for any number of reasons I want to retain even though they are not a Stack pick and will likely never be promoted nor processed nor printed nor published).
Now I can go through my Project and make my picks. I mark images to be developed in RED (I use the 8 color labels to track image development). All of these also get upgraded to 3- or 4-stars.
    • 3-star means "keep". The general idea is that in a few years time I will likely want to do some major weeding in my Aperture orchard. Any 1- or 2-star images will then be unceremoniously deleted. 3-star images will be kept.
    • 4-star means good enough for publication. One of the best of the Project.
After I develop the images in a Project, I will re-assign the star rankings. During development, some images will be promoted.
    • 5-star means not only good enough to be published as one of the best of the Project (and I mean that at whatever level one works -- from emailed to friends to printed for sale), but good enough to be included in some other sampling of my work. (I keep an Album for my Portfolio. The images in the Album are selected from my 5-star images.
Note that in my use, +star ratings are Project specific+. There is no value-equivalence between the star ratings -- and I consciously try to avoid comparisons across Projects. (If I've done a shoot, I need to know which are the usable/salable shots in that shoot -- I don't need to know how they rank in my life's work.) All of the 4-star images in one Project may be of less comparative value to me than the only 4-star image in another Project.
So in my system, "Reject", "3-star", and "4-star" are the only ratings which are necessary. They correspond to the all important distinctions mrhooper indicated:
    - throw-out
    - keep but don't use
    - use.
The other star ratings could -- and from a tidy database standard, should -- be replaced by a metadatum that is not part of the rating gamut.
The orchard floor is yours ...

    Hi Kirby,
Thanks for opening this up, as I suspect most of us have gone through the "let's see that's a 1 or no... probably a 2, perhaps I can clean up the backgound and then it would be 3. " etc etc.
We settled on a similar process where you suggest it is a project by project rating, not our life's work.
So we skip 3, play with 4 and 5, that should be obvious.
1 and 2, they are going to be deleted at some stage in the future, unless it is some rare thing, and that doesn't happen every shoot.
In Jan this year looked at the 2008 year 1, 2 and deleted most of them. Hey, we hadn't used them, touched them, improved them or even thought about them. Goodbye.
Some memorabilia, sentimental value ones got to stay.
When we look for the best, then 5 is the go. Maybe a review of 4's but only if we are struggling in 5s
Which by the way we tend to be fairly generous with I suppose.
Checked a shot of 60 images early in the week, 15 are in the 4 and 5, 8 are 5.
We also use the wonderful color system. Now this sorts out a lot of things for later smart albums.
Here are a few Green-teaching. Red-for web site pages, Blue - the crown jewels, the ones we both love. Purple- spec shots for photo library etc.
Yep, sometimes a shot might be two or more colors, but it is not stopping us at the moment.
We do shoot burst, but don't stack. If its a 4 I want to be able to see it. We create albums in the project Star 4, Star 5, so there they are in a hurry. Yep, know it is easy to do that in the search box, and can use Ctlr1-5, but the clever is later when we can be really specific in search for albums with Star 5, or what ever.
Just to finish off, the 4 and 5 get keywords, lots of them. From event, to person, to specific lighting, to species, or building type or.....
want a pic of a 1937 Ford- in Blue, at the Last Cafe, in Spring, in the sunshine, front lit, side view?
    That is what Aperture does.
and because of the way we use projects for each shoot, bet I could find it in about 10 seconds in quick review of the appropriate year or month as well.
This is not the thread on project names, but we have from the beginning way back in iPhoto(5) put them in as a date and description.
Cool thing now in Projects/Full Screen, is I can Filter by the date number so typing in 9012 gets me all the projects only from 2009, December. (9) 0 (12) Oh, am aware of what is going to happen when we have been round the scale once and the numbers come back. And we have a plan.
I am sure there are other ways to start a good system, to use the ratings and the keywords of Aperture, and agree that you have to think project specific when it comes to what is a 5.
Reserving 5 only for the 'very best image you ever took of a rose", is a bit limiting and what if my "Very best waterfall picture' is even better?
Thanks for starting a good ideas discussion.
    Regards
    DJ

  • When I plug in my iPhone to sync, it starts but does not complete the process and several pieces of data are not being transferred to my iPhone from my MacBook Air.

    Problem:
When I plug in my iPhone to sync, it starts but does not complete the process and several pieces of data are not being transferred to my iPhone from my MacBook Air.
Any help that you can provide in helping my iPhone accurately sync with iPhoto and iTunes will be greatly appreciated.
    Symptoms:
    1)   Sync:  It’s not completing the sync.  Below, I’ve provided all of my settings from the iTunes Summary tab so that you might tell me if I’ve selected any incorrect options.  I prefer to sync the “old school” way – by connecting to the computer – as opposed to syncing over the cloud. Perhaps this is what’s causing the problem? Here is a list of the steps displayed in the iTunes window as the sync progresses:
waiting for sync to start (step 1 of 7)
backing up (step 2 of 7)
preparing to sync (step 3 of 7)
determining apps to sync (step 4 of 7)
preparing apps to sync (step 5 of 7)
importing photos (step 6 of 7)
waiting for changes to be applied (step 7 of 7)
syncing apps / copying 1 of 4 (App name) (step 7 of 7)
    canceling sync
    apple icon
    2)   Photos: I've selected only certain of my iPhoto albums to sync to my iPhone.  All of the albums are correct/complete in iPhoto.  All of the albums are listed on my iPhone, both before and after the sync, but the albums are empty (no actual photos) before and after the sync. Perhaps this is tied to the fact that the sync isn’t completing, but because “importing photos” is one of the steps that the incomplete sync displays, I don’t know.
    3)   Apps: When I launch iTunes and click on the Apps folder under the Library listing, then click on the Updates tab, iTunes searches for any Apps needing to be updated and provides a list.  If I click on Update All, the Apps are successfully updated in iTunes.  But, when I plug in my iPhone so that the updates will transfer to the apps on my iPhone, the updates don’t transfer to the apps on my iPhone and those apps still reflect that they need updating on the iPhone.
    Other Potential Pertinent Info:
The flash memory hard drive on my MacBook Air recently died (perhaps a month or two ago).  Apple had emailed me about a known issue and literally the next day, my MacBook Air crashed.  I installed a new flash memory drive and re-installed everything from a backup off of an external hard drive.  Everything seems to be working fine; it recreated accurately all of my software and data, including iPhoto and iTunes, the pictures and songs (respectively) for which are stored on that hard drive, as opposed to being on the flash memory in the MacBook Air itself.  However, I don’t recall if the start of the sync problem described herein started happening at the same time that I replaced the flash memory drive.  All I know is that the computer is working perfectly in all respects and that even as the sync is failing, it at least says that it’s doing the right things and looking in the right places (e.g., the list of albums on my iPhone matches the list of albums in iTunes, etc.).
    Settings/Status:
    MacBook Air
    OSX v. 10.9
    iPhoto ’11 v. 9.5 (902.7)
    iPhone iOS 7.0.4
    iTunes v. 11.1.3 (8)
    Summary Tab
    Backups (This Computer)
    Options
Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected
Sync only checked songs and videos
    Photos Tab
Sync Photos from iPhoto (429 Photos)
Selected albums, Events, and Faces, and automatically include (no Events)
    Albums – 9 are selected

You need to download iTunes on your computer. iOS 6 requires the latest version of iTunes which is 10.7.

One of the comments suggests you can't use greater than or less than with the star rating in Finder.
You might try a Raw Query with the kMDItemStarRating.
In the criteria popup menu, select Other, then find the Raw Query entry.
You might have to play around with the syntax, but try "kMDItemStarRating >= 3"
Take a look here for query syntax: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/ipad/#documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/Sp otlightQuery/Concepts/QueryFormat.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001849-CJBEJBHH
