Is noise print any good?
I have been using FCP for 3 years and upgraded to Studio 2. I am going through an advanced tutorial and I am in the audio section. I have used noise print a long time ago, but when I use it in this tutorial, I get glassing and oscillation. This is in the Apple Pro training FCP6 beyond the basics. It is is the six one right tutorial where you try to remove background noise from the lorenzo lamas clip. I can't get it to work, do matter what settings I use.
Any suggestions or should I just go with a gate/expander?

is mountain lion any good? lotsa bugs....... as usual?? Should I get it?
For me it is the cure to all the slowness and cpu-hogging that was in Lion 10.7.4.
ML is noticeable faster and so far rock-solid; everything seems to work as advertised.
Core2Duo 2.10Ghz, 4GB of Ram. Enoughto have the ilife11 apps and iwork09 all open and surf the internet simultanously.
So, quite good at scaling cpu / ram per process. Lion would crawl then.

Can't Capture Selection for Noise Print?
Hello All... I'm new to Soundbooth and have been trying to reduce hiss in my audio. I've read up and watched tutorials on capturing the noise print etc... I drag to select part of the audio and click on "Capture Noise Print" and it seems to do this.
The problem begins when I click on "Reduce Noise"...for some reason the whole clip is selected (turns white) and when I click on "Preview" the clip begins playing from the beginning rather than playing the Noise Print Selection. (despite having "Use Captured Noise Print" checked in the box)
Also... I noticed when I go to "Undo" it says "Undo Clear Fade Out" I'm not sure why...
Any suggestions on what I'm missing or doing incorrectly?OK, it's Wednesday and I am getting a little less forgiving, so sorry, but...
Do a search of this forum for FCP 4.5 and Quicktime x.x.x (insert your version of QT here) and you will realize that you have upgraded QT beyond the capabilities of 4.5.
Solutions:
1. Revert to QT 7.1.6
2. Uprgrade FCP
Wow, I was more forgiving than I thought.
Good luck.

Noise reduction on track1 using noise print from track2
I have an audio track from a video project that was recorded on track1 that has a lot of interference from the wirelss mic that was so strong that it crossed over to the idle track2. Track1 has the voice and interference intermixed. Track2 just has the interference. How can I take a noise print from track2 and use it to reduce the corresponding noise on track1? Any ideas?

In addition, to make the process more challenging, I am unable to get the audio in the edit frame to play at the same gain as in the multi-track frame. In edit mode I seem to be at a 0db gain whereas the multi-track is playing at over 12 to 20db.
I am also unclear how to get the changes back to Final Cut. When I go to File to save it I do not see a Save option that would transfer the edited audio back to the Final Cut Project.
For the additional items you mention:
1. In your multi-track project, check your volume envelopes on the track, and check the level on your submix and master. To do this, click the the disclosure triangle just left of the track name. You'll see in purple the envelopes section, which is like keyframes in FCP.
2. You have to export a mix to send it back to FCP. Go to File -> Export, save the master mix with a file name, and most likely as an aiff file, then in the dropdown "After Export" choose "Send to Final Cut Pro Sequence."
For your noise reduction questions - applying noise reduction is for broadband, sustained noise, like an air conditioner or a hum. Are you trying to apply the same noise reduction to several files because they have the same type of background noise? I generally just save my settings, but set a new noise print for each file. I'll give you a quick step by step:
Select a bit in the file where there's JUST noise. Then go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Set Noise Print. Then select the entire file, and go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Reduce Noise. When the noise reduction window comes up, you just need to listen and play with the settings until you're satisfied with how it sounds. As a starting point, take a look at the level of the noise alone, and use that as the threshold. Usually 100% noise reduction doesn't sound good, but you just have to use some trial and error. Too much sounds worse than too little, in my opinion. When satisfied, apply it and save the preset.
Hope this helps!

I imported a Quicktime file with audio and video.
I selected a portion of the audio and went to Process, but "Set Noise Print" is grayed out.
How can I fix this?Hi United18,
You need to first open the file in the waveform editor. You cannot perform this operation in a multitrack project. Once youve opened the file in the waveform editor (you should see just the mono or stereo audio for that one piece of media) then you'd typically select an area of noise (click drag to select) and then choose process->Set Noise Print. This noise print will be used if you then reduce noise using process->Reduce Noise.
I've found that it is good to experiment. There are some files where I've had better results just running reduce noise without a noise print, and some files where I've had fantastic results by first setting a good noise print.
Another tip is to audition just the noise to see if you hear any stuff that you don't want removed (e.g. dialog). If you audition just the noise (click the noise only checkbox), what you hear is what will get removed. If you hear bits of dialog that you don't want removed, try adjusting the settings until you don't hear these things in the "noise only" audition.
I hope that helps. -
Hello. We have a user at one of our sites running Acrobat 9.5.1. They are unable to print any PDFs. It doesnt matter which PDF it is and it doesnt matter which printer - Xerox, Epson, etc.
When they go to print, they get the error "This document could not be printed" and then Acrobat crashes.
I have clered all of their preferences and uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat 9.0 (I tried using Adobe cleaning tool as well). The issue still exists. I started running all of the updates, trying to print again after each update (with restarts in between each update). This did not solve the issue and we are back up on 9.5.1.
I have also performed a permissions repair on the system which did not help. They are running OSX 10.6.8 with all Apple updates.
I have a crash report but I have no idea where to upload it to as it seems the general consensus is not to just copy and paste them on here. If someone can recommend where it can be uploaded to Ill remove the wall of text below and do so.

How do I set a noise print for the entire track? (Back to Basics)
Ok. I've only worked in STP with single audio clips. Now, I'm trying to adjust audio inside a Multi-Track project sent from FCP... and it's a little different. At least to a guy like me.
I'm struggling with the most basic issue, and that's possibly why I can't find an answer to it.
Simply, "How do I go about setting a noise print for an entire track?" I've done this for a single audio clip, but now that I'm in a slightly different environment my old ways don't work. I've looked through video tutorials hoping to find something but no luck.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
JSWith the audio opened in SoundTrack Pro, select (highlight) a small portion that only contains the noise that you want to reduce. Sample that section. then select the entire audio clip and use the Noise Reduction tools to reduce the noise that you sampled earlier.

Pre-Size Your PPI for Best Print - Once Good Advice Still Good?
In another thread someone mentinoed pre-sizing image data to prepare it for best printing.
For a long time it's been "standard advice" to resize images so that the ppi is an even division of the printer's dpi, because some years ago occasionally one would run across printers that would produce poor results if you didn't - you might see jaggies in straight edges for example.
Thing is, computers have (not so) quietly been getting more powerful over time, and printer makers have been competing with one another to try to make their printers produce better results than the other guys. One way they've done this is by improving the quality of the algorithms in the printer drivers. Use of mega storage and high accuracy math, which was once taxing on older computer systems, is now standard practice.
So it's time to question the old rule of thumb.
Making a few assumptions about the many variables (what printer, what OS, what version of drivers, what application being used to print) , there seem to be several questions here:
1. Can the image resolution be too high, causing the printer driver to make bad decisions about what ink dots to lay down where on the paper?
2. Does it help or matter if the image PPI is an even division of the printer's DPI?
As I have done in the past, I set out to do some actual testing, to see if I can actually SEE anything to help answer these questions.
I created a sharp image to be printed at 3 x 2 inches: http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/Ghirardelli.jpg
Then I printed it at 6 different resolutions (1000, 720, 567, 300, 200, and 100 ppi) by resampling the image, labeling it, printing from Photoshop CS5, and feeding the same sheet of HP Premium Plus photo paper through my older HP 932c inkjet printer 6 times. The printer was set to its highest quality settings, including 2400 x 1200 dpi mode. This was the result:
I then looked critically and as objectively as I could at the different images. Here are my observations:
Naked eye:
The four highest resolution images (1000, 720, 567, and 300 ppi) all seemed to have an equivalent high level of crisp detail.
I could not detect the inkjet dots. Smooth objects look smooth.
Jeweler's Loupe:
I could see significant reduction in the finest details in the 300 ppi print vs. the three higher resolution prints, and a slight reduction in the 567 ppi vs. 720.
At no resolution were any jaggies or evidence of aliasing visible.
The inkjet dot pattern was plainly visible, and it does differ between the different prints. But it was not possible to say whether one was "better".
Things seem to have a little more texture in the 1000 ppi print vs. the 720 and 567 ppi prints.
Macro Photo:
Lacking a high resolution scanner, I took photographs of the 6 different prints. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to set up with my best lighting and lens combination, so I got some reflections off the glossy paper, and and at this resolution I can't really see the inkject dots in the photos. I want to repeat this when I can find more time to do it better. As I did these photos hand-held, I believe the variances between them could be slightly influencing the results. But I'm going to post them anyway, for you to see.
I could see ever so slightly more detail in the 720 ppi print vs. the 1000 ppi print, though from the size of the tiny dust/light reflections I think it may have just been the better focused. Note that this observation is not supported by direct observation through the jeweler's loupe, above.
The 1000 ppi and 567 ppi prints seems to have slightly more noise or texture than the 720 ppi print. Again, this might be issues introduced by the photography process, though I did note a possible increase in texture in the 1000 ppi print with the jeweler's loupe as well.
Beyond just the blurring, I could see some evidence that straight lines are not quite as straight in the lower resolutions (300 ppi and lower). This seemed more apparent than with the jeweler's loupe examination, and I wonder whether the Photoshop downsampling process could have introduced it.
Left to right, top to bottom: 1000, 720, 567, 300, 200, 100:
Conclusions:
Printing to my HP 932c inkject printer on Windows 7 x64
300 ppi is not sufficient to coax the best possible detail out of an inkjet printer. It appears a number in the vicinity of 720 or more is better, and this number could be much higher with modern very high resolution printers (mine's old).
Speed was no different in printing any of these - a modern computer can process a huge amount of data in the blink of an eye.
When a sufficiently high resolution image is printed (in this case 567 ppi or higher) I saw virtually no evidence that a particular ppi value is superior, for example an even division of the printer's dpi, though in hindsight I realize I should have prepared a 600 ppi image (duh). I will add a 600 ppi image before I re-photograph the results.
It's possible ever so slightly more texture becomes visible at 1000 ppi than 720 ppi, but it might be just noise.
Practically speaking, from looking critically at the results I could not see a reason to pre-size the image for a specific ppi value.
I encourage you to experiment and report your results with your particular combination of gear.
Your comments are welcome!

I would never suggest people actually downsample though...why waste the pixels?
Exactly. There was a statement in another recent thread that downsampling to be an even fraction of the print dpi was important to do.
It might have been a misapplied extension of the advice to upsample. It's not been all that long that we've had big enough high resolution data that even makes downsampling a possibility.
-Noel
I believe I was the one to make that statement, which was based on recommendations by an Epson Print expert at a seminar demoing printers. He showed to prints from the same file, one set at an even multiple of 720 and the other some random number. It was subtle but visible the difference. That was probably 5 years ago.
In the meantime, I have made extensive tests of prints on my Epson 3800 trying many combinations of single pass, hi speed, Super fine print (2880x1440) and down to the basic level.
Everything evened out at 720 dpi. At 360, which is where I output from ACR, I can make an 8x12 print with no resampling whatsoever. Upping that to 720 and pushing the printer hard (2880x1440, single pass on Canson Platine), I see a discernable difference in the smooth tonalities.
As I understood you from past conversations, you employ the maximum output size from ACR which in my case, would double the file size by upsampling, and if necessary, downsample from that. I am not comfortable doing that as a default operation, but perhaps Jeff S might step in here and clarify. After all, ACR does offer that option! But my file size now goes from ~70MP to 143 MP, cutting my storage capability by 1/2. It's not a trivial matter when two of us here can run 600 to 800 images in 1/2 day! -
Photosmart C4280 - not printing any ink
Hello. I am trying to print on my printer and it is acting like it is printing but nothing is appearing on the paper. The thing says there is ink in it and usually when it runs out of ink it tells me it can't print. I do not want to go out and buy new ink if it is the printer that is broken. I have had it for many years and it might be the end. Does anyone know if this is fixable? I am literally just getting blank paper but the paper comes out slowly like its pretending to print.
Thank you!Hello there! Welcome to the forums @msleila ,
I read your post about your issues with printing and I wanted to respond with my suggestions. Having the printer not print any ink can be tricky when you don't know where the issue is coming from. I am going to make all of the recommendations I have for you.
Print from different programs to see if any program will print. Text Edit is a good choice, as it's preinstalled on the Mac.
In order, try these steps:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
Repair disk permissions
Restart the Mac
Follow this guide: OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac
In addition, download this driver: HP Printer Drivers v3.0 for OS X
Try the steps from this guide: Wrong Colors
If the troubleshooting does not help at all, I would lastly suggest technical support.

What is a good headset for iPhone 5, good noise cancelation and good with Siri
Any tips on what would be a good headset to use with iPhone 5with good bag round noise cancelation and good compatibility with Siri.
I ended up getting a cheap $18.00 headset and plugging it into my iMic. I forgot I even had that thing. It works very well with skype. Just have to set the sound preferences to use the iMic for in and out.

Is 24" iMac really any good?
I know this is a vague question but hang with me.
I am about to buy a 24" iMac and decided to look on these forums first to check if there are any problems with them.
I have now read all sorts of horror stories regarding the screen (too bright/dead pixels/dark corners/etc...) Various problems with humming and misc noises coming from inside the Mac, and issues with audio quality output.
One of the main reasons for going for a new machine is Boot Camp. Now having read the Boot Camp forum it seems the 24 incher just won't work at all with the latest beta of Boot Camp.
Can I start a straw poll of owners with new 24" iMacs - are they any good? Are you happy with them? Is it the fact that we only heaar about the duff ones on these forums, or is it that a large percentage are inferior/faulty/unsatisfactory.
Your thoughts/recommendations/experiences would be welcomed.
ThanksI was going to post a new topic with this but I will post it here instead.
I am on my second iMac in as many weeks, but this one is two hours old and it I am yet to find a fault with it.
My first iMac had a single green stuck pixel, I called apple and they replaced it and where very good.
I collected my new one about 3 hours ago from TNT and got it home. Took it out the box and notice the packaging was damaged and thought Oh god here we go...
Turnt it on and spent 5 minutes looking at every single pixel on the display then I saw a single black dot.. luckily it was just a bit of dust!
I booted it up, had trouble with setting up the keyboard, it just didnt work first time, But I got over that. Mouse was a doddle to set up! (both wireless)
Now it is just working perfectly! Wireless is working great, iSight and Photobooth are fantastic! (I love the effects!!) The speakers are VERY good for a device that is so thin!
I am yet to try a movie or DVD at the moment I am just playing with it, getting it configured and what not.
There are dark corners on the display, but its really nothing to worry about. You dont really notice them, you just need to look really hard to find them.
There is also a very important factor which many over look. It smells nice!!
They keyboard is great, quiet and responsive, its white and I am a little scared of making it dirty!! it just looks so good. The mouse is a little heavy but I am just used to using a decent gaming mouse from my pc which is very light.
Overall when you get a proper working one it works great, peforms fast and does exactly what it says on the tin.
I dont get the so called brightness buzz, if I do, the noise from my PC is overpowering it and stopping me from hearing it so its really nothing to worry about.
I was worried about the problems described here when I ordered but the thing is, this is a user support forum, IE the only people who are going to post are the ones with problems. If you get your mac and your not happy then call Apple as soon as possible and they will do every effort to ensure they get it fixed!

No Option To Set Noise Print in Soundtrack Pro
This is another newbie to Soundtrack Pro question. I have background hiss from some terrible audio recording (not my doing) that I would like to utilize the noise reduction feature via setting a Noise Print. Once I select a section of my audio track and go to Process, however, it does not give me any options. Meaning, the options are all in gray, and cannot be selected/clicked on. Any ideas why this is? Everywhere I search (Discussions, phone support, at the Apple Store), I am told to follow the same steps, but I continue to be unable to choose Set Noise Print. Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Thank you so much!Is this a multitrack project? If so, you must first double-click the clip to get it in it's own window.

Client is running Adobe Acrobat X. When trying to print their Ricoh printer can not be seen in the drop down menu. The Printer was added locally and the printer can print any other file format.
Your ps file should be good, the problem likely resides elswehere. Maybe in your acrobat install, distillers settings. what error did distiller give?
Mine ran good and got a multi page document, here is a screenshot to help you troubleshoot.
On mac go to system preferences / print and fax / and change your default printer if you have another option. I know sounds like this should not help, but there are problems like Illustrator for example not making .pdfs if you do not have a printer chosen or an old or corrupt .ppd assigned.
