Is overclocking a video card bad?

First post, so please be gentle!
I will be getting a new GTX 570 (when I upgrade to i7 2600K) but am a little confused as I've read so much on the different branded cards/models available (e.g. reference vs non-reference, etc).  I've read that it's best NOT to over-clock the card - in much the same way that it's best NOT to over-clock the CPU.  However, there are many 570 cards available that are factory overclocked by as little as just 10MHz from the reference speed.  I can understand that this deviates slightly from the reference, but in the real world would I be fairly safe to purchase a card such as this for basic home video-editing purposes (I don't do gaming)?  I just need to put my mind at rest, before deciding which specific brand / model to get, as there are soooo many out there.  Any advice on what other things to look out for in a card would be useful too - HDMI vs mini-HDMI?; etc.
Thanks in advance.

Clock speed of the GPU is almost irrelevant, since even with hardware MPE the GPU is so much faster than other components in the system, that its utilization is far less than 100% and with an i7-2600K, even heavily overclocked, it is likely never to attain more than 50% utilization. What you should look for is cooling capacity, price and warranty period. If you doubt between for instance the 560, 570 and 580, then number of cores has a much bigger impact than clock speed.

When overclocking a video card how hot is it o.k. to let the card get. I want to push the card a bit(Doom3) but don't want to do any permo damage. Was running around 51C last night.

I think about 55 max but keep it below if you can.

  • The AVI Radeon X1900 XT video card in my Mac Pro Dual-Core went bad and I need to replace it. I found one that is $250 but I don't think that I need the gaming-type processor.  I am using a 23" Apple Display. Are there lower cost options? -C

The Radeon X1900 XT video card went bad in my Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon. (I tried it with a good one at the office). I found one online that was $250. I don't need the gaming capacity of this card and was wondering if there were less expensive video cards that I could use in this machine. I run Adobe Creative Suites for graphics design and have a 23" Apply display. Thank you for any help that you can provide. -PretzelMcK

Then pick up the ATI 5770 AND upgrade to 10.6.8.
Same price for a good card that will work and helps to have 1GB VRAM.
There aren't any other real choices let alone less expensive.
Even the ebay links I had and not a lot of choices.

  • Is my Video Card/Display going bad??

My display has 30-50 vertical columns, from top to bottom, across the screen. Within each column, are numerous vertical lines, like bar codes, that are pink in color. This situation happens at start up before any applications are opened. The computer(apps) works like normal, mail, safari, etc, except these lines are always in my view, on the desktop or window/page. If I "grab" a page to move it , then the whole page turns pink. If I click off of the page and then return, the page looks normal again, except for the columns of pink, vertical bars.
Is this my display going bad or video card?? I have the ATI Radeon X850 XT video card. If it's the video card , do I replace with a new old stock (ATI Radeon X850 XT) or can I replace with a newer, better card??
Any help GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!! I'm Very Novice at this!!

    Hi-
Sounds very much like a baked graphics processor.
Have you tried cleaning the dust from the card?
Is the fan on the card clean and rotating freely?
If you are at all mechanically inclined, removing the fan and reapplying thermal compound is worth a try before laying out serious cash.
As for replacement, the X850XT was the top card ever offered by Apple.
It is also THE most rare.
Because of this, they command high prices:
    http://www.welovemacs.com/6613594r.html
eBay also has a number of them for similar prices.
    Radeon X850XT
can I replace with a newer, better card??
    Only one option for better.
A flashed (converted PC version) Geforce 7800GS:

At less than half the price of the X850XT, it is worth considering:

Your video card driver may be fine for something, but just not compatible with Premiere Elements 13/13.1.
For those with the display card error, the answers include
    a. assure your video card/graphics card driver version is up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card -
if necessary consider a driver roll back.
    b. determine in Device Manager/Display Adapters if the computer is using 2 cards instead of 1
    c. delete the BadDrivers.txt file
the rationale for that deletion is found in post 10 of the following older post...principle applies to 13 as well as 9.
Re: Premiere Elements 9 Tryout Serious Display Problem
Have you looked for computer ATI card settings that might be more compatible with Premiere Elements 13/13.1?
When is the program crashing - just opening a new project or rather crashing if editing a particular video format at the Timeline level?

  • Bad video card ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 2008 early macpro?

I get the green squiggles on the screen when i connect the right hand side dvi port to a monitor. left side is fine. currently only using one dvi port port, but i am looking to upgrade to a apple 30" with the dual-dvi connection for maximum resolution.
does this indicate a possible failure of the video card?
I've only heard good things about this video card, how can i tell for certain?
might'n it be time to put in a newer video card that'd run the 27" Apple LED if that were the case?

After 4 years, my 2008 Mac Pro just experienced a grey screen, then black screen failure with the ATI 2600XT graphics card ... the usual troubleshooting methods pointed to a hardware problem.
Using the info on TS3630 from the link above, I determined the card's serial number was among those affected. I went to the Apple store this weekend, and they swapped the bad card for a good replacement at no cost to me. So, as of Sept. 2012, they are still honoring the replacement program.
Be sure to bring a copy of the tech doc + all your pertinent system info (the store was not aware of the program until I showed them the document). Also, do check in advance whether they have the replacement in stock ... I was lucky that my local store did, otherwise, they have to order and you'll need top make a return trip as they will not ship the replacement card to you.
kudos to Apple for handling this so well after all this time!

  • 865PE Overclocking problem with video card

Hello, this is my first post, so I just wanted to say hello to everyone.
I just bought the following equipment
    P4 2.8c (stock cooled)
    MSI 865PE LS motherboard
    Kingston HyperX PC3500 2 X 256MB (dual channeled)
    Geforce 4 TI4800 8X AGP 128MB
    Sparkle 400W Power supply.
My problem is, when I overclock my processor, to a moderate level (3.1 GHZ)  I get hieroglyphics and different colored textures placed when playing games (battlefield 1942) and when benchmarking in 3dmark.
What is the cause of this?  Maybe a AGP voltage issue?  Im new to overclocking and do not know much about the video card side to overclocking.
    Thanks for the help,
    -- Nick

set AGP/PCI locked to 66/33 in the BIOS.

  • Bad video card or driver/hardware incompatibility?

I have not had a problem with stability on my main computer until I purchased an MSI GeForce4 Ti4600.  I have in the past operated this computer for over a week without reboot or shut down with little problem.
With this new card, I can no longer play any game that contains 3D graphics.  When using Windows XP for the exclusive purpose of 2D graphics, it is fairly stable.  Once I try doing anything 3D intensive, I will almost immediately lock up, get a "blue screen of death" with a variety of messages including "hardware failure", or get a distorted image followed by one of the two previous listed actions.  I have been trying different software configurations over the past week with no success.  I have tried using Windows 2000, every combination of drivers I can find/think of, and 3 different version of motherboard bios.
The stats on the computer I have been mentioning are as follows:
    Tyan S2460 motherboard
    2 x AMD Athlon MD 1600+
    2 x 256MB PC2100 DDR Ram
    IBM 60GB 7500RPM harddrive
    400Watt power supply
I initially thought that it was a hardware conflict so I decided, yesterday, to try the video card on my old machine.  I had the exact same problems.
    Stats on the second machine:
    600MHz Athlon
    Gigabyte 7IX motherboard
    125MB Ram
    250 Watt power supply
I would like to get some input before I decide what my next step is.

I plan on trying it; however, I am not looking forward to exchanging power supplies.   :P   Have already put a weeks worth of work into it.
I don't think it is over heating.  I am a cooling freak.  For example, I water cool my main system (the cooling is externally powered thus lowering the strain on my p/s), excluding the video card, even though nothing is overclocked.  ATM, my video card has a large fan positioned right next to it for the sole purpose of helping the factory fan/heatsink do their job.  After the lock-ups, i have physically checked the card's temperature, and it seemed to be staying quite cool.

  • IMac 24 with Nvidia 7600...bad video card choice?

Hi folks. I've had my iMac 24 incher for a few days now and I went to try one of my favorite game demos, Unreal Tournament 2004 and the performance I got from the video was a lot less than what I thought it would be. I have the game for my Windows machine which is a 3Ghz P4, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6600GT and the performance on that seems way better than my iMac. Why? I thought the video card it in was suppose to be pretty good (GeForce 7600GT 256mb). I changed the settings in UT to the native res of the mac but it didnt' help. Anything I can do about this? Thanks.

He said that he was running the demo. I don't
    think
this has been updated to universal binary.
It has been updated. Do a search on versiontracker.
    Do you mean this?
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22450
Versiontracker screwed up again. This is a patch that updates the retail release of UT 2004 for Mac to version 3369.2. It isn't the demo. The demo weighs in at nearly 600 MB. If you have a link to a download of an actual UB demo of UT 2004, please feel free to share.

  • I am pretty sure my video card has gone bad in my macbook pro, I want to retrieve data before replacing it.  Is this possible?

My video card has failed and I want to retrieve photos.  Can this be done?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I wouldn't worry about that. Take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller and let them repair your Mac. If it's a GPU failure, your hard drive is OK, and you will have the same hard drive with the same data after getting the MacBook Pro repaired.
However, it's recommended to make a backup. As you can't start up your Mac, what you can do is to take out the hard drive and connect it to another Mac through a USB to SATA adapter, so you can recover your files

  • Horizontal lines on imac display, video card going bad?

I have horizontal lines and a triangular shaped artifact on my 24 inch Imac display. This happens after quite awhile of use, so I am thinking it might be the video card is about to go. Also, have issues with viewing flash videos, the browser (safari) will just quit responding, sometimes it will recover. Most times I have to reboot the machine. I believe all these syptoms are related. Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Your graphic card is damaged. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the computer repaired.
Both problems may be related, because Flash uses the graphic card and it often fails

  • Does Cool N Quiet + AMD Chip Driver = Video Card Overclocking?

For some odd reason, my 9800NP is automatically changing its clock rates on me.  Never down, only up.  Does N Quiet and/or the AMD Chip Driver impact your video card?  Right now it booted at 378/330 which is a 9800Pro.  I'm using the normal BIOS for a NP, but it does show up as a pro in the Display properties.  Any ideas?

I think the Cool N Quiet software doen't like RadLinker/RadClocker.  I enabled Cool N Quiet in the BIOS, but did not install the associated software. All better now!!

  • Msi video card n240gt and n9800gt problems with output HDMI

    Hello to all
I have a problem I just bought a new Video card because I needed HDMI output. The previous card I have is a BFG Ge Force 8800GT 512 DDR2 running @ 1920x1080p 60Hz which works perfectly the only downside is it does not have HDMI out with 5.1. Now i installed the n240GT 512 DDR5 and tried watching BD ripped to the HDD and playing them back  all i get now it jerking lagging bad also and have horizontal red and green lines scattered across the screen.Which i did not have with my 8800GT card thinking  its  a bad card so i bought another card from another dealer this time its a MSI  N9800GT 1gig DDR3 and still the same problem.I Checked the resolution and its set to 1920x1080P refresh at 60Hz,i also changed the  Hz to 24Hz and it cleaned up the lines but not all and picture still  jerky picture. I have a MSI K9N NEO V3 Motherboard and all drivers updated current Bios. l used a DVI cable 40ft long with my Ge Force 8800GT and every thing worked fine, once I installed the new MSI Video cards N240gt and N9800GT I have the above problems and using a 50FT HDMI cable. I have a Samsung PN50A550 with 3 HDMI inputs 1 has my BluRay player hooked up with HDMI running at 1920x1080P at 60Hz and crystal clear picture no problems, input 2 has my HD Bell receiver running at same specs as input 1 no problems I tried the other HDMI inputs from the Samsung TV  from the HDMI out from the card same thing. It has to be the cards that can`t support the TV what else can it be if not the MSI cards. Please respond ASAP Thanks Thumpalong

You may want to borrow and test with another PSU.
We always recommend Corsair and Seasonic
I can't find anything on Topower other than that opinion piece of linked... getting frustrated. Most of the time I can find detailed info on most psu's not this time, so best to borrow and test.
Assuming of course that the older VGA's worked fine.

  • What is the best video card for late 2003 PM G4 MDD'?

I, currently, use an ATI 9600 PC/Mac edition 256 MB card in this Mac.
It's performance is okay for most things except for 720p video.
I know it will never be possible for this old workhouse to view and play 1080p video, but I am on the hunt
For a better card that may get me better streaming and playback of 720p video as well as better/faster capatibilty on
    OS X 10.5.8.

Does this particular card need additonal power from the power supply?
    Yes.
If so, where does this plug into?
Pull it from a hard drive power connector or use a Molex splitter if all are in use.
Is the MDD power supply able to handle extra powering of a video card?
    Yes.
the instructions mention using this card with a PCI slot cooler?
Optional, but due to the MDD being a hot beast not a bad idea.
Are these cheap and where can I purchase, easily either from electronics chain or internet?
    Cheap and easy.
    http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-cyclo-blue-slotcooler.html
Can this card be used without it or the temps inside the MDD be too high.
YMMV. Depends on how hot the MDD runs and how far overclocked the X3 is.
My experience with video cards is , usually, plug and play made for Mac cards.
This ain't a Mac card. It's a hacked for Mac card. Things are different on the dark side, and usually a lot faster.....
Can the slot cooler be placed in any open PCI slot?
    Yes.
Does it have to be near the video card?
Doesn't matter. It's there to help with the MDD heat issues.
Where does this plug in to get power to the fan?
Same as the graphics card with the same answer regarding PSU ability, etc., etc.
Will I have to move PCI cards around to install the slot cooler?
Dunno. Ain't seen inside your machine.
Will this fan make my MDD even more noisier than it is now.
    Add two fans, likely.
The linked PCI cooler isn't loud, and the X3 is only loud running full tilt.
The MDD's  regular fans never power down.
Doe you use CHUD and Nap mode? If not, your wrong.....

Need some help from all of you and maybe some procedures and pics of an actual installation.
You're asking an awful lot, especially since you gave the points to the guys that don't put any work (or money) into this subject....

  • MSI NEW P.E. Series Video Card - GTX670 Power Edition 2GD5/OC with Twin Frozr 4

Glad to be back in the forum and I was been busy for awhile. By this time lots of PC hardware already came out especially from Nvidia. Just like today my share would be MSI's N670GTX PE 2GD5/OC video card.
First of all lets talk about the GTX670 GPU chip. This GPU is the younger sibling of GTX680 which uses the same 28nm GK104 chip but with one disabled shader cluster/core.The reference or standard GPU clock is 915Mhz with a turbo boost of 980 and as for the memory is concerned, it has a 256bit memory bus connected to a 2GB GDDR5 memory with speed of 6008Mhz. Just like with any Kepler based architecture, the card would also have all the goodies like "Adaptive V-Sync", "AA TXAA (Temporal Super Sampling)", supports "DX11.1" and improved 3D Vision Surround.
Moving on, let's check out now what MSI did with their GTX670 SKU based video card. The card is under a new Series named "Power Edition" (series comparison table below) and it comes factory overclocked from GPU clock of 915MHz to 1020MHz and Turbo boost of 980Mhz to 1080Mhz. It also comes with the 4th version of Twin Frozr Thermal Cooling design with a theme color of Black and Blue which matches the color of MSI's midrange to high-end motherboards as well. The dual 8cm PWM fan based cooler are equipped with Propeller Fan Blades which draws air better and now has the so called "Dust Removal Technology", basically as you startup your PC the fan will rotate counter clockwise for 30 seconds clearing the dust from the cooling heatsink. Adding a finishing touch, MSI equipped the video card with their Military Class III components ensuring the best performance, efficiency, higher overclocks and durability.
Additional Box Shots of the N670GTX PE OC
    MSI Series Comparison Table
New Power Edition Series which is a notch higher than the basic Twin Frozr Series.
Below are some other basic specs of the card which not been mentioned above.
