Is SQL Analysis Services black-holing my server's memory?

I'm running a SQL 2008 SP2 database engine on a server that also hosts analysis services and reporting services.  The server has 32GB of memory.  When I run performance monitor against it, I can see only 2.5GB in use:  see the included screen
shot.  Yet, the server reports that out of that 32GB, only 208 MB are free.
How can I discover which other process or 'gremlin' is sucking the missing 30 GB of memory?

How can I discover which other process or 'gremlin' is sucking the missing 30 GB of memory?
Then check the other processes.
And yes, SQL Server and SSAS have a different strategy in utilizing the memory (RAM) and depending on the current workload it can happen, that e.g. SSAS requires the memory used by SQL Server and this can cause performance problem. If you use SQL Server
as data warehouse for SSAS, then you will see this effect extremely during cube processing.

It is not currently supported. You might be able to create a linked server in SQL to be a proxy for the connection and enable scheduled refresh if you are desperate.

  • Connecting SQL Analysis Services 2005 cube with obiee 10g

    Hello experts,
I'm trying to link an SQL Analysis Services 2005 cube with obiee 10g.
In Oracle BI Administration, when I choose File -> Import -> From
Multi-dimensional, I have to fill the next gaps:
    Provider Type: Analysis Services 2005
    URL: ***********
    User: blank
    Password: blank
Before to do that, I need to create the URL path.
To create the URL, I have followed this link.
    http://erpthings.blogspot.com/2008/08/obiee-connection-to-msas-2005-
    cube.html
But, it hasn't worked because when I was trying to configure the HTTP
access to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, we have to perform a test to ensure that it has been well configured. In IIS -> WebSites -> Default WebSites -> olap, we should browse the document called "msmdpump.dll" and this should show an xml document, but it doesn't.
    Thanks!

    Hi Alex
It sounds like your MS data pump might not be configured correctly. First ensure that is working before trying to put the values into OBIEE. Don't worry about the 500 error - I get that too instead of an XML page.
You can read a bit more about SSAS support on my blog here:

  • SharePoint Performance services requirement- SQL analysis services

    Hi Everyone,
I have a question I was hoping someone would verify the answer to. One of the requirements for setting up Performance Point services is for there to be a SQL analysis service instance that sharepoint interacts with. This is particularly true if want to create dashboards
that are Dynamic(Please correct me if I am wrong). My question is, must SQL analysis in sharepoint mode be used instead of any other form of SQL analysis services, for performance point services to work at all or is it the case that other forms of
SQL analysis services mode( ie Tabular and Multidimentional) will work but function will be limited?
    Thanks,
    Dominic

    Hi Dominic,
According to your description, you need to know if SQL analysis in SharePoint mode is must or we can use other form of SQL analysis services in PerformancePoint Services in SharePoint Server, right?
PerformancePoint Services in SharePoint Server 2013 supports PowerPivot models as a data source. You can use data in a PowerPivot model and build interactive dashboards using PerformancePoint Services features such as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Scorecards,
Analytic Charts, Analytic Grids and Filters. So if you need to use PowerPivot models as a data source, then first you need to install PowerPivot for SharePoint which is an Analysis Services instance.
In your scenario, what do you mean by "other form of SQL analysis services"? Pleas elaborate it, so that we can make further analysis. Here are some useful links for you reference.

  • Power BI analysis services connector - the remote server returned an error (403)

Hi all, does any one have any suggestions what to try to identify the configuration problem I have?
I have, a SSAS 2012 tabular instance with SP2, there is a database on the instance with a read role with everyone assigned permissions.
When configuring the Power BI analysis services connector, at the point where you enter Friendly Name, Description and Friendly error message, when you click next I receive the error "The remote server returned an error (403)."
I've tested connecting to the database from Excel on a desktop and connect fine.
I don't use a "onmicrosoft" account so don't have that problem to deal with.
We use Power BI Pro with our Office 365. As far as I can tell that part is working ok as I pass that stage of the configuration with a message saying connected to Power BI.
The connector is installed on the same server as tabular services, its a Win2012 Standard server. The tabular instance is running a domain account that is the admin account for the instance (this is a dev environment) that account is what I've used in the
connector configuration. It's also a local admin account. There is no gateway installed on the server.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Brian
    Brian Searle

    Brian-
One other common issue I've seen is the UPN not quite matching. Log onto the SSAS server as the user who's logged into Power BI. Then open a command prompt and run:
    whoami /upn
Hopefully the UPN it says will match your EffectiveUserName test and will match exactly how you're signing into the Power BI site.
If that doesn't work, your best bet is to go to
http://support.powerbi.com/ and click Contact Support and describe this situation and someone from the Power BI support team should get in touch with you to troubleshoot.

  • Issue in migrating analysis service job from one server to another

    Hi All,
I'm migrating analysis services from one server to another, within the source server there is a job with the name
denreportingprocess which executes a batch file within local drive on server. I have moved all the analysis services cubes from the source server to destination and all the databases on the source server have been restored to destination.Verified
cubes are pointing to the correct database by modifying the connection string within the datasource part of the cube databases.
I have copied the entire process folder from source to destination and edited the code within the run file and code within the job pointing the locations to new server.
Below is the job code, it is running a batch file placed in E drive
    E:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\process\run.cmd
Below is the text within the batch file (windows command script)

  • Does Hyperion supports MS SQL Analysis Service 2008

It is currently not published anywhere that they do, but I suspect from a app repository perspective that you can get it to work. I have 2008 installed on my local machine and am going to test install applications that need a RDBMS repository. I think it will work, but I think it will be some time before oracle publishes that it works with MS SQL 2008.

  • Trying to Perform an install of SCSM 2012 SP1 - SQL Analysis Services Not Installed

I'm performing a clean install of System Center Service Manager 2012 on a Windows 2012 server.   The prerequisite checker told me the Analysis Objects were not installed.   I clicked the link and downloaded the SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis

I also tried installing both the x86 and x64 versions of these tools.
I have also tried the same install on a Windows 2008 R2 server and had the same error.  I'm convinced this is a bug in the setup.
Has anyone else seen this?  Is it a known issue?

Try to check the log file SCSMSetupWizardxy.log under C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp

  • Use of SQL Reporting Services in BPC (multi-server environment) - concept

    Hello Experts,
    I have the following scenario:
2 BPC application servers. Lets call them BPCA1 and BPCA2.
Load Balancer with virtual name BPCA
    SQL 2005 database server BPCDB
Database server would hold BPC databases and Report Server database - requires 1 SQL Server license.
Each application server requires SQL Server Integration Services to be installed - 2 SQL Server Standard Edition licenses in my scenario.
Now, is Reporting Services a required component and needs to be installed on both application servers?
Because "scale-out" deployment for Reporting Services is only supported in SQL Server Enterprise Edition. Price difference between Standard and Enterprise Editions are quite sufficient.
So, can I install SQL Server Reporting Services only on BPCA1 and point BPC configuration to BPCA1 for all applications servers?
What is the use of SQL Server Reporting Services in BPC besides running Admin Reports?
    Thanks in advance,
    Akim

Hi RS is not required to be installed into db server or app server. It  can be even an external RS server.
You are right if you will try to install RS in both app server you need Enterprise Edition because is required by Microsoft for RS web farm.
If you will install RS into database server then you don't need other license for SQL but if you will use SQL Server 2005 you have to install IIS into database server.
For many companies this broke some security policies and for this reason you have to install RS into appserver.
If you will use SQL Server 2008 then IIS is not required anymore and this is another plus in favor of SQL 2008.
Also SAP recomendations is to use SQl Server 2008 for SAP BPC 7.0 SP3 or later becaiuse the performances are better.
    RS is used for:
Admin reportts. Audit Reports Journal Reports.
But without RS working you can have issue also with some Admin components not really just with reports.

  • SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services and OBI EE

    Hello,
How to use the Multidimensional import functionality of the BI EE Administration against a cube stored in a SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Thanks Christian,
The article you mention takes for granted that a valid Analysis Services XMLA URL is present, which is not my case.
I have found a good article on how to configure specifically Analysis Services 2008 here:
    http://bloggingabout.net/blogs/mglaser/archive/2008/08/15/configuring-http-access-to-sql-server-2008-analysis-services-on-microsoft-windows-server-2008.aspx
The article is the nearest I could find from my particular software platform (Vista).
What I'm currently dealing with is [nQSError: 64203] "XMLAnalysisError.0xc1010000", which is probably some security setting I have to get right. I will keep the thread updated if I move on.
    Thanks,

  • Creating MS SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services OLAP connection

    Hello,
I am trying to add an OLAP data source in BI Publisher (which is part of the OBIEE 11.1.1.5.0 suite I have installed). However, the connection never seems to create - I don't get an error or a success message when I test the connection. However, if I cancel out of the create connection screen, I get this error: "Your request was denied as you have no permission to access the data.". This is odd since the credentials I am using have admin rights to the OLAP cube I am attempting to connect to.
    SETUP
    OBIEE 11.1.1.5.0 x86_64 bit Linux
MS SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services running on Windows Server Enterprise (32 bit) 2007 SP2
Windows users are able to connect to the Windows/SQL server via Excel 2007 and its built-in Analysis Services "Other Data Sources" option. Authentication is done via Windows Active Directory LDAP
    QUESTIONS
    1) In the BI Publisher connection screen, can I enter my AD username/password, or because I am connecting from a Linux Server, do I need to authenticate via a different method?
    2) In the connection string, the initial catalog I am attempting to connect to has spaces in its name. Could this be an issue?
    3) Given the "no permission to access data" message I am getting, is it possible I am reaching the SQL Server but need to set up a local database, non-AD account to access the OLAP catalog?
    4) Are there any logs in the OBIEE server that I can check for more details?
    Thanks!

With the new productivity pack for Business Objects Enterprise XI R2 (Service Pack 2) you can access SSAS 2005 through the new OLAP tool called Voyager.  The productivity pack is due out sometime in the next few weeks.
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) 2012 High Availability Solution in Azure VM

I have been testing an AlwaysOn high availability failover solution in SQL Server Enterprise on an Azure VM, and this works pretty well as a failover for SQL Server Databases, but I also need a high availability solution for SQL Server
Analysis Server, and so far I haven't found a way to do this.  I can load balance it between two machines, but this isn't working as a failover and because of the restriction of not being able to use shared storage in a Failover Cluster in Azure
VM's, I can't set it up as a cluster which is required for AlwaysOn in Analysis Services.
Anyone else found a solution to use an AlwaysOn High Availability for SQL Analysis Services in Azure VM?  As my databases are read-only, I would be satisfied with even just a solution that would sync the OLAP databases and switch
the data connection to the same server as the SQL databases.
    Thanks!
    Bill

    Bill,
So, what you need is a model like SQL Server failover cluster instances. (before sql server 2012)
In SQL Server 2012, AlwaysOn replaces SQL Server failover cluster, and it has been seperated to
AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances (SQL Server) and
    AlwaysOn Availability Groups (SQL Server).
Since your requirement is not in database level, I think the best option is to use AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances (SQL Server).
As part of the SQL Server AlwaysOn offering, AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances leverages Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) functionality to provide local high availability through redundancy at the server-instance level—a
failover cluster instance (FCI). An FCI is a single instance of SQL Server that is installed across Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) nodes and, possibly, across multiple subnets. On the network, an FCI appears to be an instance of SQL
Server running on a single computer, but the FCI provides failover from one WSFC node to another if the current node becomes unavailable.
It is similar to SQL Server failover cluster in SQL 2008 R2 and before.

  • Imapact of SQL Server Analysis services

    Hi
What will be the impact of installing analysis services on an existing SQL Server database which is shared among different web applications Project Server 2013 (PWA) and other SharePoint Applications? In my

    Please help
    Himanshu
    Himanshu

I may impact your Server and SQL Server performance significantly.
This is a common architecture in which both the SQL Server relational DB Engine and Analysis Services instances are running on the same server. In this scenario, it is absolutely crucial to override the defaults for both instances in order to prevent resource
contention, memory pressure, and (in the worst case) memory exception errors.
    Consider
SQL Server memory configuration after installing Analysis services, which includes
    Minimum Server Memory
    Maximum Server Memory
Minimum Memory per query (only for advance users)
At the same time you have to set the
memory configuration for SSAS engine also you have to consider
    LowMemoryLimit
    TotalMemoryLimit
    HardMemoryLimit
Remember, other than SQL Server and Analysis service other application in your server will be consuming memory. And the most important part is to leave memory for OS to run properly.
So, General formula to set Hard limit of SSAS could be (but not limited to)
Hard Memory Limit = Total Physical Memory - SQL Server Instance min - OS memory (include other application too)
Disclaimer: Above formula is just for demonstration purpose only; should not be applied
    on production without complete analysis.
Worth to notice that SSAS does create its own database for cube so other than memory you need to plan about disk space (if you have limited space)

As Mr. Olaf Helper said all you have to do is add Analysis Service as a new one on your existing instance here is what you have to do if you are new for this
1-Click on Start on your computer >>>All Programs>>>Click on Microsoft SQL Server 2008  >>>Configuration Tools>>>SQL Server Installation
    Center
2-  Click on New Installation or Add Feature to an Existing Installation as shown below
and then click on Analysis Service as shown on here
and then from this follow the installation wizard and you should be able to install it.
I hope this elaborate more for your installation problem and goodluck

    Hi Saurabh,
Please elaborate your scenario or OLAP Server environment with more detail. What's the method you used to load the SSAS cube?
For this issue, I would suggest opening a case with Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) (http://support.microsoft.com), so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist you in a more efficient manner.
