Is Temp tablespace Necessary in backup???

Hi all,
Temporary tablespace is not necessary in online backup in 9i or later.
Is Temporary tablespace Necessary in online backup in 8i???
Could you recover database(version 8i) complete if you didn't include Temporary tablespace in your online backup?

If your temporary tablespace is composed of datafiles, it's better to include these ones in your backup strategy. On the contrary, if your temporary tablespace is composed of tempfiles, you can omit these ones from your backup strategy.
Depend of how was create your temptbs :
SQL> create tablespace temp2 datafile 'E:\oracle\oradata\DEMO817\TEMP2.DBF' size 10m temporary

    In 9i RMAN does not restore temporary datafiles. Instead, you should create them after your restore. I believe that Oracle is going to make a change to this in the next release of 9i and have RMAN create the temporary files. You can view the temporary datafiles @ v$tempfile.
    I believe RMAN doesn't restore temporary files because they are locally managed and not in the control files. RMAN reads the controlfile of the target database to obtain info about backups, datafiles, etc.

    Due to outage of our SAN, we our out of production for the

    Please guide us how to create temp files. v$tablespace is showing tablespace PSAPTEMP but datafile are not there
    Abap dumps are giving these errors as mentioned below

    if you want to add a new tempfile to your TEMP Tablespace,you can do like that.
    <i>ALTER TABLESPACE</i> <<b><u>name of TEMP Tablespace</u></b>> ADD TEMPFILE <<b><u><b><u>pfad to the file_and_file name</u></b></u></b>> <b>SIZE</b> <size>;
    You can use also the options <i>REUS</i>E <i>autoextend off</i> or <i>on</i> .
    e.g:
    <i>alter tablespace</i> <u><b>PSAPTEMP</b></u> add <i>tempfile</i> <b><u>'/oracle/SD1/sapdata4/temp_2/temp.data2'</u></b> <i>SIZE 1000K</i> <i>REUSE</i>;
    The directory <b><u>temp_2</u></b> should exist.
    Or you can use the BR*Tools to create a new datafile. Enter brtools and follow the instructions or menu.

    If not, may be it's not necessary to extend it. Even if it seems to be full Free Extents are reused.
    ALTER DATABASE TEMPFILE '....../datafile/name_datafile.tmp' RESIZE 100MYes you can use this statement, but be aware that the Size specified (here 100 Mo) is the target size not the supplemental size.

    Space Allocation in a Temporary Tablespace
    You can view the allocation and deallocation of space in a temporary tablespace sort segment using the V$SORT_SEGMENT view. The V$TEMPSEG_USAGE view identifies the current sort users in those segments.
    When a sort operation that uses temporary space completes, allocated extents in the sort segment are not deallocated; they are just marked as free and available for reuse.

    index creation needs sort. how much depends on the size of the index.

    nologging means you the creation isnt in the logs so if you need to recover you cant get back to it. when using nologging in a prod env you might do it for performance during a period of heavy dml such as a large index creation and then backup afterwards. common enough.

    is X big enough? if yes, cup of tea, if no, make X bigger.

    I am getting the below error when i try to load data using SQL loader from physical stand by database to another database after making the physical stand by database in read only mode.
    ORA-25153: Temporary Tablespace is Empty.
    On primary database when i query

    Can you make sure that /dev/vx/rdsk/oradata/tempfile0101 is copied to standby site during the standby creation. Often it happens that the hot backups are copied to standby ste and generally they dont contain temp files. If the files is present , then i'll suggest you to do a quick bounce of standby instance to make sure that controlfile attempted to access it. You can also try recreating the standby control file on promary and copy it to standby site along with the tempfile and start the instance with new control file.
    If you want to add temp files to the standby instance, the only option you have is to add them on primary site. If you have standby_file_management as auto they will get copied over. If not you can copy the files to standby instance and restart the recovery.
    Please let us know if any of the hints are applicable to your case.

    We have tried to increase the size of the TEMP tablespace, but this operation keeps using up the entire temp tablespace. It's the temp tablespace in the target database that is filling up.
    We cannot keep increasing the size of the TEMP ts to fill the disk.
    We have also tried to create a new repository but this had the same outcome.
    I reckon there is something in the database tables, as one of our backups used the target control file as its repository. Should I remove the entries from these tables in the target tablespace to make the repository think there is no re-synching to be done?

    If you are sure that it is on the target DB what you can do is enable a trace for the event to see what triggers this error
    it doesnt have to be on temporary table because there are temp segments on normal tables used for index creation type operations as well so you need to find the problem before assuming it is temp tablespace error
    alter system set events '1652 trace name errorstack level 1';
    to turn off
    alter system set events '1652 trace name context off';
    If you cant find anything from trace then you can send the trace output here maybe somebody can catch something.

  • Windows Server batch to resize TEMP tablespace.

    I was wondering if it's possible to use windows server 2003 batch jobs to RESIZE TEMP tablespace.
    Here are some details:
    Windows Server 2003
    Oracle 10gR2
    We do a windows batch job to backup all files on Oracle directory (.ctl, .dbf, etc) to a different server. With autoextend on, the TEMP.dbf gets to be really big. What I am wanting to do is reduce the size of the TEMP.dbf before backing up the files - to reduce the back up time.
    Since alter database tempfile 'c:\oracle\...' RESIZE 10M is a SQL command; is there a way I can resize it through the windows batch job? If so, mind pointing me the way?

    When I checked at EM, there are locks too..
    SMON has locked the system

  • How to find the sessions/user consuming more temp tablespace

    Environment details
    IBM-AIX 64 bit
    Oracle 10.2.0.4.0
    Recently we encountered the issue of sudden peak in CPU utilization and temp tablespace usage. We are noticing this issue after Apr CPU 2009 patch and upgrade to 10.2.0.4.
    Recently temp space was full and we added 18 GB of space to temp tablespace, within few hours, they are also consumed.
    Application team is telling that they did not modify any code. ADDM report suggests most of the recommendations related to SQL tuning only
    not sure about the real issue. Can somebody tell me how I can find what are all sessions/user consuming high temp tablespace

    Run below query to check if it is used by any session.
    select sum(a.BYTES_USED)/1024/1024 used_mb, sum(b.bytes)/1024/1024 total_mb,
    sum(a.BYTES_USED)/sum(b.bytes)*100 pct_used
    from V$TEMP_EXTENT_POOL a, v$tempfile b
    where a.file_id(+) = b.file#
    Check who is using it by the below query.
    SELECT s.sid,s.serial#,osuser,process,program,s.sql_hash_value,u.extents, u.blocks
    FROM v\$session s, v\$sort_usage u
    WHERE s.saddr = u.session_addr order by extents,blocks desc

    in 8.1.7 under Win 2003 (yes not supported). TEMP tablespace is used at 98%. Should we enlarge temp file or it is not necessary and Oracle manges it automatically ?

    Question.. what is better? A 50% used TEMP tablespace? And if you think so, why would it be "better"?
    Consider this for CPUs. Let's say you have 32 CPUs in your server. Only 2 are used at 100%. The remaining 30 CPUs are idle.
    What is good about this? Nothing much. And bad? What is especially bad is that you/your company paid loads of money for those 30 CPUs that are now sitting and doing absolutely nothing. What a waste!
    Back to temp space. Is a 50% temp space usage "better" than 98%? No.
    Temp space is a resource. A resource (CPU, space, memory, etc) is there to be used. If it is only used 50%, then the remaining 50% is a "waste". So in that respect, 98% is a LOT better than 50%. It seems that temp space has been correctly sized and that the vast majority of it, is being used.
    When is 98% (or 99% or a 100%) a problem? When there is not enough.. and more is still needed. And Oracle will inform you of that via error messages. (e.g. unable to extend temp space by x)
    This is only part of the resource utilisation puzzle of course. The other parts deal with how effectively the resources are being used. Is that 98% utilisation effective and efficient utilisation? (which needs you to look at HOW it is being used in order to determine WHY it is being used in order to answer these questions)

    So what i want to do is , I want to create the global temporary table in another TEMP2 tablespace ( which is not the default one) so the load of billions of rows of data will be shifted to TEMP2. The default TEMP tablespace will not be affected and it can be used for other transactions.
    Is this possible. Can i shift the global temporary table from TEMP( Default temp tablespace) to TEMP2 ( the non-default temp tablespace) ????
    Please guide me with proper solutions and examples ....

    Global temporary tables are instantiated in the temporary tablespace of the schema that inserts the data - not into "the default" temporary tablespace.
    Assume Schema1 creates a GTT and grants all on that table to schema2
    Assume schema1 also creates a procedure (authid owner, the default) to insert data into the GTT and grants execute on the procedure to schema2
    If schema2 executes: insert into schema1.gtt, the data will appear in the temporary tablespace of schema2
    If schema2 executes: execute schema1.procedure, the data will appear in the temporary tablespace of schema1
    So if you want to protect the "normal" temporary tablespace, you could just create a special temporary tablespace for the owner of the procedure.

  • TEMP tablespace getting full while inserting a CLOB in Trigger

    We have a Oracle 10g (10.2.0.4.0) DB on a Solaris 9 box which also runs our J2EE web-service application on Weblogic 8sp6 server.
    We get around 220K web-service requests from upstream callers daily to insert data in the main table, say TABLE1, which has daily partitions on a date column. This table has around 21 columns out of which 1 is a CLOB column.
    Now this table has an AFTER INSERT trigger which calls a package procedure to insert the same record into another table, say TABLE2.
    From Java application insert statement in executed in below format using a weblogic jdbc connection pool :
    INSERT INTO TABLE1(COLUMN1, COLUMN2, ........., CLOB_COLUMN,........, COLUMN21) VALUES (:1, :2, :3, :4, :5, :6, :7, :8, :9, :10, :11, :12, :13, :14, :15, :16, :17, :18, :19, :20);
    Clob object is prepared in application using ojdbc14.jar.
    We are observing a strange issue here. The TEMP tablespace utilization keeps on growing as more and more inserts are executed by application and after ~125K inserts the TEMP tablespace gets full and we start getting ORA-01652 error.
    On further analysis we could see that there are only 7-10 session being maintained but as more and more inserts happen TEMP tablespace utilization goes on increasing for each of these sessions.
    When we tried with inserting just few records and then watching the session details in v$session_wait then we could see that it is in INACTIVE state and waiting for the event ‘SQL*Net message from client’. This does not seem correct as the session has successfully inserted the data and committed the transaction and we can see the data in the tables as well.
    The confusing thing here is when we modify the trigger to pass blank string('' ) instead of the CLOB column to TABLE2 then this issue does not occur. All 200K records are inserted properly and TEMP tablespace utilization also keep always below 1%.
    Can you please help us in solving this issue. Is this related to any oracle issue?
    Inside the package we have tried using DBMS_COPY statement to copy the CLOB column after insert but still same result.

    My first thought on reading your post is that not only are you using a database version that is now so old it is in extended support and even then not even the most recent patchset for it.
    The first thing I would do is move to 11gR2 and if you can't do that at least get to 10.2.0.5 and apply CLOB relevant patches as well.
    Same goes for your operating system. Solaris 9 is ancient: So move to 10 which has vastly improved memory management.
    To help you further it would be really valuable to know the table layout. For example is this a heap table or an IOT? Is it partitioned? Is this RAC? What size are the CLOBs? Are they stored in-line? Chunk size? etc.
