Is the airport extreme limited to the speed of my other router

I am thinking of buying an airport extreme 2013 but my existing router is quite slow, I want to know whether the airport extreme will be limited to this speed.

I have a bt router as my main router in my house which I want to continue using. It is WPA protected and I want to keep it that way. However I have some devices that will only connect with WEP. So I was wondering if there is a way to setup my airport extreme to be a WEP protected network so I can use this only for the WEP devices and use my other router for my other devices and connections as it is more secure.
If this is possible, could you please explain to me the setup for the airport extreme as I don't know if it needs setting up as a seperate network or in bridge mode? I don't really understand the setup options on the airport and what is needed to do what.

Whatever you choose for the WiFi network name.
Step by step as you requested:
Open up AirPort Utility.
Go to the AirPort tab and select Wireless:
Under Wireless Security select WEP. Click Wireless Network Options and tick "Create a closed network". Also, you could turn down the transmit rate if you want.
Select Internet.
These settings should work fine. Then, everything should be good to go.

The 15" Retina's will have better performance than any 13" Retina. Not only do the 15" machines have dedicated GPU's, but they also have quad-core processors, whereas the 13" Retina's only have dual-core processors.

This is extremely unlikely. The AirPort Extreme can provide this function with other Apple routers, but as far we know, it is not compatible with products from other manufacturers for this purpose.
Suggest that you use a Netgear product for the best chance of compatibility.

I just bought the AIrport Extreme to replace an older Linksys wireless g router. But I am still getting a fairly low signal, not showing much improvement from the previous router. What gives?

I too recently bought the Extreme to replace an old Linksys G and discoverd that the range of the new Extreme was surprising less than the Linksys.
Nothing had changed otherwise; both routers were installed in the same place (on floor, under a cabinet in the middle of my house).
I returned the Airport Extreme to Amazon and bought another (the latest version), and the same problem exists, i.e., I can't get a signal at the corners of my small home with the Airport, where I once could with the Linksys.
I'm puzzled, but think that difference must be that the Linksys has 2 large external antennas and the Extreme's antennas are mounted internally.
I've also noticed that Apple sells a wall mount for the Airport Extreme and am assuming this is to get the Airport up and out into the open in order to improve its 'send and receive' characteristics, no?
If your Extreme is hidden in a cabinet or under some piece of furniture, I suggest you move it into the open and see if this helps extend its range.

Roadrunner Cable Modem + Airport Extreme = limited internet :(

I am having trouble gaining full internet access with my Time Warner (Roadrunner) cable modem. They use DHCP to configure TCP/IP, and I need a publicly visible static ip. I have tried many different things to get this to work, but so far nothing. Anyone know how (or if) I can get this to work?
Would be very helpful to know what Roadrunner SoCal limits with their residential service. I cannot find this on their website, and the rep I spoke with said they block nothing. I'm not sure if this is true.

The problem is that the airport extreme is "in front of" your computer. So that when Internet services (like BitTorrent) try to connect to your machine (which is expecting them), they hit the Airport first, (which is NOT expecting them)... since it doesn't know what to do with them, it throws them away.
So I know you go on to explain how to let this traffic through, but should I place the airport in front of the modem (I dont even know if this is possible)
The reason why things like WWW work, is because the Airport isn't completely brain-dead. It knows how to "follow a conversation" and it essentially eaves-drops to all outgoing connections from your computer. If your computer deliberately asks for a response, then the Airport extreme "knows enough" to send the expected response back down to your computer. This magic all happens automatically for things like your email, web, ftp, etc.etc... because these services all follow a "back-and-forth" communication model.
The problem with protocols like BitTorrent (or running your OWN webserver for example) means that, you never know who is going to come knocking. It's not that the Airport is denying these "visitors" so much as, it wasn't told that anyone was coming.
To fix the problem you need to tell the Aiport extreme to roll out the welcome mat, and also... you need to the the Airport *where to send these visitors* That is what you do with the NAT port maps. This is how you tell the airport, when somebody comes and knocks on this door, send them to my PC. (Not, my laptop, or my iPhone, or my printer, or anything else that may be on the network: send them to my PC) After all, it is the PC that would be running BitTorrent, or Unreal, or a webserver, or ICQ, or what-have-you...
So now all you have to do is find out the IP of the machine you want to send the traffic to, and then you need to find out what PORTS that traffic arrives on.
For example... if you wanted to run a webserver on your home machine at internal ip: 10.10.10.2; then you would tell the Airport to route all incoming traffic on port 80 (the HTTP port) to internal address 10.10.10.2 (your PC). And that's it.
It has been my experience that BitTorrent uses the following ports:
tcp 13405
udp 13405
tcp 6881-6999
udp 6881-6999
TCP and UDP are two different flavors of internet traffic, and there is a section in the NAT redirections that allow for each... make sure you place them in the proper places.

Airport extreme not hitting top speeds of my isp with wired computers

So my isp has started offering 300/20 speed. when my desktop is wired to my airport extreme 802.11ac i cannot hit the top speed of 300, when i can if i wire my desktop directly to my airport extreme. any ideas?

In both statements above, you indicate that the desktop is wired to the AirPort Extreme.
Please clarify. Maybe you meant to say in the second statement that higher speeds can be attained when the desktop is wired directly to your modem?
You also indicate that you are using Windows 7. If you check the specifications and system requirements of the new AirPort Extreme 802.11ac, they indicate that you must use the following to set up and administer the AirPort Extreme, so that may or may not be part of the issue here if you are trying to setup the AriPort Extreme using a PC.

Airport Extreme- "Limited or no connectivity" over and over and over

Ok, our property manager gave us an Apple Extreme router (the old round one) and an Airport Express to use as an access point. I'm not an Apple guy, but hey, it was free. I used the the annoying Admin Utility software to configure the Extreme for security and all that (why can't we just configure it with a web browser??).
For the last two weeks, the Apple network consistently drops me 2-3 times per hour, and I get the "limited or no connectivity" notice on my system tray. This happens every time I leave my computer for more than 10 minutes. Usually when I click "repair connection", the network allows me to reconnect, but occasionally I have to reboot. I checked the utility and my router is using the 5.7 firmware, and I figured that perhaps going with a firmware update may prevent the Airport from dropping me all day long.
I can't seem to find any info on this problem. Searching Apple's support pages is disorienting because they don't always specify whether they're talking about the old Airport Extreme or the new 802.11n version. It's common sense that they should have a separate website for each router, since they are not the same thing, and also because they unfortunately bear the same name "EXTREME". After wandering in the fog for a while, I think that I have this right:
Apple Admin Utility 4.2 is all that is necessary to configure the Airport Extreme "Old Round One", and the Airport Utility 5.0 and later is only supported by the Airport Extreme "802.11n". Think I got that right.
Also, looking at the Admin Utility, there is an option in the top menu to "Upload Software", which I surmise means to flash the BIOS with the latest firmware.
First of all, has anyone here had this problem with the flying saucer Airport? Also, is 5.7 the latest firmware? If not, where is it on Apple's site? Is that the solution to my problem?
EDIT: The Airport Express is using the 6.3 firmware.

Printing through Airport Extreme limited to less than one page.

I have my MacBook Pro, and my wife's MacBook (dual-core), connected wirelessly to my Airport Extreme (802.11n). I have my printer (Canon MP-800 Multifunction) connected to my Airport. When I try to print I can only get about 3/4 of one page to print, no matter how many pages the file really is. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Try the following on your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the Internet Connection tab
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to read Share a public IP address
Click Update

Two Airport Extreme (6th gen): Two seperate networks or one router one bridge?

I have fiber optic service and the modem that came from the ISP is wirelessly capable of old version of 802.11n and short range as well, it has four lan ports as well. So I bought two Airport Extreme (AE 802.11ac) and its working ok but I'm trying to understand the difference between the two scenarios in terms of efficiency and speed;
1. Fiber optic cable connected to modem. AE1 connected to modem Ethernet port 1
via physical Ethernet cable. AE2 connected to modem Ethernet port 2 via
powerline. DHCP disabled on AE 1 and AE2 and carried out by the modem. Wireless
on modem is of course disabled. SSID the same on both AE1and AE2 but 2.4 and 5
GHz channels are unique for each AE.

Your questions are really about a matter of preference. Both 1) and 2) are correct implementations.
In 1) above, the "modem" (which is actually a modem/router) is providing the routing services for the network.
In 2), the "modem" is acting as just that, a simple modem with AE1 acting as a router and AE2 acting as a "bridge" to AE1.
If you asked the support folks for your modem/router which setup was best, they would say 1). However, if you asked the support folks at Apple which setup to use, they would say 2).
AE1 and AE2 are creating separate wireless networks, but if you use the same wireless network name, or SSID, and password for both networks, everything will act like one "big" network. Technically, this is called a "Roaming Network".

Airport extreme working on some devices but not others

All of a sudden airport extreme has stopped working on some of our devices. within our family we have an old macbook pro running tiger, a 2nd gen macbook air running snow leopord, a black macbook running lion, a mac mini running lion, two iphone 4s and an iphone 3g. the wireless only works on the two computers running lion. nobody has changed any of the settings on the airport extreme. it is running the latest version and has been working fine up until a couple of days ago. i have reset the modem and router several times each but nothing has helped. when we try to connect the iphones to the wireless they say unable to join network and the computers running snow leopord or older say there was a problem connecting to the network or something similar to that. any help would be appreciated!

I know that you have reset both the modem and AirPort already, but I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
(OPTIONAL, but recommended) While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

Airport Extreme - Ps4 , Sonos system , apple tv and other apple products

I need some help, i'm thinking of changing routers i currently have a belkin n750 db , and its not compatible with my sonos system , but i also like to game. I was wondering if the airport extreme would be able to handle all of my gear . ( iMac , 2 iPhones , iPad , ps4 and apple tv ) as well as anything i may add in the future .

If you are a "gamer" the very first requirement on your list would be router that supports UPnP......Universal Plug and Play.....that automatically opens the ports that the game console will require.
The Apple AirPorts do not. That is about all that needs to be said about that.

Airport Extreme 6th Gens having trouble (one bridge, one router)

I have two brand new Airport Extremes that I'm trying to troubleshoot. The problem that I'm seeing is that occasionally one (or both) will stop functioning entirely on a weekly basis.
Details on our setup:
These are servicing a small business, generally about 40-70 devices are connected between the two. They are located apart from one another to maximize the reach of our wireless network.
One is set up as a router (DHCP and NAT), it is connected to a switch which is connected to a Time Warner modem that is serviced by our building's IT contractors (I do not have access to those devices as a result). This has led to us receiving warnings about a double NAT, which hasn't been a real problem for us but could a potential point of where these are breaking so I figured I'd mention it.
The other is set up as a bridge and extends the wireless network, so they are both broadcasting the same SSID. This was set up automatically upon installation of the device.
I'm only utilizing two of the router's ethernet ports: one goes to a switch that handles our non-wireless boxes. This issue has happened regardless of the switch's presence, though, as previously we just used the ethernet ports on the Extremes and had the same problem; the other goes to the bridge.
I'm curious as to what in the configuration may be causing this problem, because I'm not totally certain if it is the fault of the Extremes and possibly due to us using our own range of IP addresses with the . Usually it is the bridge that dies and it's a PITA to get working again - I usually have to power cycle both the bridge and the router to get the bridge to function again.

double nat means you have 2 routers trying to, well route, basically so i suspect that tw modem is really a tw modem/router. if not, think about it, if it is just a modem, what is doing the routing before the switch?
in a clean setup, it would look like this
tw box connected to 1st extreme via eth (tw LAN port to ext WAN port, extreme in bridge mode)
1st extreme to 2nd extreme via eth (again, 1st ext LAN port going into 2nd ext WAN port, extending via a wired connection)
this is simplified. you can elongate the connections with your switch and wall jacks but the connections should be the same

Airport Extreme Base Station as bridge for Westell DSL router

I have searched the forums & internet and for the life of me cannot get my network to work properly! I hope you can help.
Here is the situation (I rent so chances are we will not be moving hardware anywhere):
- Westell (Verizon) DSL wireless router downstairs connected to the internet, 1 iMac via ethernet, and 2 ibooks via Airport cards
- One lonely Powermac G4 upstairs that does not have a wireless card
- One extra Airport Extreme Base Station with firmware version 5.7 installed & connected via ethernet/LAN to the G4
I figured the "easy" thing to do would be to use the AEBS as a wireless bridge to get the G4 online. The network utility has occasionally thought that the G4 was connected to the internet, but the internet didn't work at all when it said that!
I have been configuring the AEBS using my wireless ibook (G3). I "unchecked" distribute IP addresses, and "checked" connect to network via WDS. I used the Westell's MAC address as the main WDS source. Under the "WDS" tab, I said to configure the AEBS as a remote station and the Westell router as the main station, and to allow wireless users to connect.
I have tried using the same Network name for each. WEP/WAP is NOT set up on either modem, so passwords aren't a problem. They are both set to channel 6. I am configuring the TCP/IP settings manually.
When the network names are the same, the internet either stops working, or the computers can't find the AEBS.
I don't understand why the AEBS seems unable to see the DSL network.

Well, what I have been able to do is this:
I have a Westell Wireless DSL router, just like the one mentioned here, and just like the one mentioned in the article I made reference to, the one started by Mr. Müller.
As was mentioned in the Mr. Müller article, there are some possibilities that will work. They were submitted by a guy named Duane, from Texas. He gives three alternate possibilities, which he entitled "Solution #1, Solution #2, and Solution #3. He says all three of these alternatives will work, and in reading them over I came to the following conclusions: First, he really knows his stuff, and second, his proposed solutions would probably work.
Based on his comments I decided to take a risk yesterday - I put my older Mac Base Station in a drawer and invested in a new Airport Extreme.
Anyway, I digress...
What I've done is follow Solution #3. And it works! I now have a connection from my laptop to the Airport Extreme base station and the internet. I am typing this message using that connection. All I had to do was disable the wireless connection of the DSL router (using their software, of course), and connect the Airport Extreme, via the LAN Ethernet connector, to the Westel DSL router.
Now, all that remains for me is to extend the range of the base station, using an Airport Express. I haven't had any success with that yet, but I see no reason why I shouldn't get it to work eventually. If you can help me out with that, though, I'd sure appreciate it.

Airport Extreme (802.11n) and ATT U-verse wireless router (2-wire)

I am attempting to use my new airport extreme with my new U-verse service. Prior to the U-verse service my router worked fine. I have to use the U-verse router as it is the brains behind the internet/TV applications of the U-verse service. I tried to run a eithernet cable from the U-verse router to the Airport Extreme, but the U-verse router says that I cannot use a third-party router behind the U-verse router. The U-verse router gives me the option to resolve the problem and it makes some configuration changes. The U-verse router show my Airport Extreme as a DMZ+ device. I can use my computers that are on the Airport Extreme network but my Xbox's will not work.
Is there a way to use the Airport Extreme as a wireless hub and not have the Airport Extreme compete with the U-verse router to assign IP addresses?

Just switched to Macs and never want to go back to Windows!

Run an ethernet cable from a spare LAN port on your "U-verse router" to one of the LAN ports on the Airport Extreme Base Station. Then run the Airport Utility, and configure the Base Station so that it does not distribute IP addresses (ie so-called "bridge mode").
What this will accomplish is allowing the "U-verse router" to perform DHCP server and internet connection sharing services for your entire LAN. The Base Station's DHCP server and router will be disabled, allowing it to function as a wired-to-wireless bridge device.
