Is the value numeric?

Hi All,
I am on v11.2.0.3
Its the same old question. I want to check if a given value is a valid numeric value or not? Is there a function for that in SQL?
I know I can write
declare
begin
   v1 := TO_NUMBER ( v2 ) ;
exception
when others then
  < if SQLCODE = -6502 > Its not numeric value
end;I need to use this logic for millions of records I process every night, don't want to write my own code for the same (even if we have native compilation).
Please let me know if we have a built-in function.
Thanks in advance.

Its the same old question.and the same old answer. If you need to detect all kinds of numbers, including signs, decimal points and scientific notation, you can write a function, much like the PL/SQL you posted, or use a regular expression:
REGEXP_LIKE ( str
         , '^'          ||
           '[+-]?'          || -- optional sign
           '('          || -- 1 of the following:
             '(\d+(\.\d*)?)'     || --         1 or more digits, optionally followed by a decimal point and 0 or more digits
           '|'          || -- or
             '(\.\d+)'     || --     a decimal point, followed by 1 or more digits
           ')'          ||
           '([Ee][+-]?\d+)?'     || -- (optional) E, optional sign, then 1 or more digits
           '$'
         )If you're only interested in certain types of numbers, there might be simpler and faster ways. Unsigned integers is one of the simplest:
LTRIM ( str
      , '0123456789'
      )          IS NULL

  • Can you use the value from a numeric indicator in a numeric control?

    Hi!
         I have to develop a code where I have to find the maximum value of a waveform and draw a line at 50% of the value. So I chose to find the amplitude of say 10 cycles of waveforms and found the maximum value out of the amplitudes.
    But my real problem is, I have to use the maximum amplitude value that I get from the max. array VI and put it back in program to calculate the 50% value.
    So is it possible to use the value from a numeric indicator and put it in a numeric control? Like in MATLAB or C, you give the variable a name and use it later to do any computations. Is it possible to do something similar in LabVIEW?
    Solved!

    Hi!
         Thank you very much for taking some time out. I have been trying to do this since 2 months and I am stuck right where I am.
    The situation is, I have to calculate the amplitude of the irregular waveform for a few trials and then find the maximum amplitude out of the trials and display a line at whatever % of amplitude the user chooses. I tried using property nodes but I am getting Error 1055 for some unknown reason. Then I decided to draw the line using DC offset but it turns out it calculates the amplitude each time and so the line keeps dancing everytime. Now my challenge is to have the amplitude calculated for say, 20 loops and then calculate the max from that. I ran out of ideas so I am posting here. I am using LabVIEW version 8, and I'll upload a few of my attempts. I hope I am not troubling you'll much.

  • How to move the value from a character field to numeric or packed decimal

    Hi,
    can anyone explain me on how to move the value from a character field to numeric or packed decimal.
    Please help me on this. Thanks...
    Regards,
    Rose.

    Hi ,
    if you use keyword MOVE u may loose the decimal and thoussan separator and if u don't want to loose them just call the FM ..HRCM_STRING_AMOUNT_CONVERT.
    i doubt wherther it is HRCM or HCRM just try using *
    this will suit ur requirement.

    I am currently testing our website with CF11. It is currently working with CF8 however after migrating it to a new server running CF11 I have encountered the following error.

  • How can I check the values of a textbox, if the vaule is numeric?

    Hello,
    I have a (maybe simple?) problem:
    I'm using a Webform with a input-field. With JSP I want do check, if the value of this textbox is numeric.
    In Visual Basic there exists the method IsNumeric(). But I don't know how to check it with Java/JSP?
    What classes/methods have I to use ?
    Bye
    Chris

    If you don't want to work with the exceptions then, you could just check if all the digits are numbers or a decimal point, but then you may need exponents or comma's for seperation too.

  • Is it needed to convert the values frm text field to numeric for sql server

    hi all,
    i'm using tomvat4.0,back end sql server 200.
    when i insert the values in to the table it is giving an exception sayin "Error in converting varchar to numeric"
    is it necessary to convert those strings from text fields into int before passing them to the sql query..
    i think it is not necessary for oracle..but not sure with sql server..
    pls help me
    cheers
    chandu

    yap, every thing is fine...
    n i got the solution...when the text field is left blank....the requst.getParameter returns [coe]""(null)
    wen the database is lookin for a numeric it is giving null...which is not acceptable...
    so inserted this code...
    if(request.getParameter("...").equals("")) {
      //assign zero to a variable then insert that variable....
    }thanx for the responses
    cheers
    May the solutions to one's problem pop up in one's mind itself

  • Cannot get the value after space

    i am doing my double module project for my degree course and i am also a newbie in JSP. Hope there is someone can help me to solve this problem. Now, i set the value of a radio button to "don't smoke", "smoke lightly", and "smoke heavily". Then i use request.getParameter ("smoking behavior") to get the value selected by the user, but the result is only "don't" or "smoke", which the character after spacing will be not be retrieved. I dun know how to solve it, so can any expert here help me to solve this problem? Thanks for helping.

    You can't use spaces in passed parameters; either give your options numerical values that you can translate on the receiving end, or do an URLEncoder.encode() on the values before submitting them. If you encode them, you'll do an URLDecoder.decode() on them on the receiving end.
    URLEncoder.encode("don't smoke") = "don%27+smoke"
    URLDecoder.decode("don%27+smoke") = "don't smoke"

    All I want to do is get the value associated with a dropdown item...
    1. I have a combo box

    "Orange" has the export value of "1234"
    When I click "orange" I want to get the export value "1234" and alert it to the screen
    I'm using javascript, here's what I have so far:
    In the combo box properties I have the following validation script:
    theFruitClicked();
    I have a function in the document javascript:
    function theFruitClicked()
         app.alert(event.value);
    This is alerting the text value not the export value.
    What else should I do to get the export value?
    Thank You.

  • How to get the value from one Popup lov column to another popup lov column

    Hi,
    I am new to oracle apex development and having the below issue.
    In my application, there is a tabular form with 15 columns ( c1.. c15).
    I have to populate the value of column C5 based on the selected(from popup lov) value of column C3, tried to use onchange, but didn't help much.
    Any help please.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Oh boy, this is a fun one.
    onchange should work theoretically (in this example, assume that f05 is the target column that should be set and "this" is the source item whose value is to be transferred to f05 on the same row (row 2)):
    onchange=$s('f05_0002',$v(this));
    BUT the catch is of course that needs to be different for every row (can't hardcode the '2'), so you need something to dynamically create the row number component.
    I wrote this for an app I'm working on that uses master-detail forms heavily (I also wrote a lot more code to read the fmap array that is in v4 so that I can reference my cells via their column name and not the numeric position (so "f05 can be determined w/o hard coding), insulating against columns moving around, columns being made display-only etc. but I won't bore you with that here unless you really need to know).
    function getRow(pObj)
    { //Pass in an object reference to a tabular form cell and get back an integer
      //derived from the object ID.
      var vRow=pObj.id.substr(pObj.id.indexOf("_")+1);
      if (isNaN(vRow))
        return (null);
      return (parseInt(vRow,10));
    function formatRow(pRow)
    { //Pass in an integer and it'll be returned as the tabular form cell ID suffix
      //(e.g.: pass in 1 and get back string "_0001").
      //Used in building ID references to tabular form cells.
      if((isThingEmpty(pRow)) || (isNaN(pRow)))
        return(null);
      var vRow=pRow.toString();
      while(vRow.length<4)
        vRow="0"+vRow;
      return("_"+vRow);
    }Therefore:
    onchange=$s('f05_'+formatRow(getRow(this)),$v(this));
    So in essence, pass in "this" which will be a reference to the current item, largely to determine what row we're on. getRow will return 1, 2, 3, etc. formatRow will take that and return 0001, 0002, 0003, etc. Once that is done, it'll concatenate with the f05 and f04 to refer to the correct columns (determining f05, f04, etc. dynamically is another matter if you really need to but I didn't want to complicate this answer too much at once).
    Note: above I also use a isThingEmpty() function that I wrote. It does nothing other than check the item for an empty string, if the item is null, etc. Just do your own evaluation of empty-string, no-value, etc. there.
    It would indeed be nice though if Apex had a better way to delclaratively access the tabular form items though. Despite all the v4 enhancements, tabular forms were not entirely upgraded to the same full functionality of page items.

  • Dump when changing the value for a field (of 13 decimals) in alv grid.

    Hi Group,
    Its giving a dump when user is trying to change the value.
    dump description: Unable to interpret "70,000 " as a number.
    what is happening here is, the original value is 50,000 and he is deleting 5 and replacing it with 7, here its throwing the dump.
    If he removes the complete number 50,000 and then gives 70000 its  taking the value.
    I tried to use, the decimals options in alv field catalog but to no joy.
    Please can you give me an advice on this.
    Many Thanks.

    the problem is the comma in the 70,000....that's an alpha character.... Normally, we expect SAP to display numeric fields in a appropriate format, based upon their numeric type, but trying to forcibly insert '70,000' into a true numeric-type field can generate an 'unable to interpret xxx,xxxx  as number' error.
    You could experiment with changing your ALV column to a char17 (or appropriate width) and putting your numeric value into that to display, then converting back to type P, or other field type in the table, in a column that is not displayed, when the user changes the value....  essentially two columns, one not displayed with a routine to copy/convert the numeric field into the alpha field and the reverse when the field is changed.
    But, the better solution is probably for the user to understand that they're seeing a formatted numeric field, and that they need to replace the entire value with the only possible punctuation being a decimal and (if necessary) a negative sign.

  • How to store the value into variable and access it in RMAN script

    I want to create a variable and dynamically assign a numeric value to it (may get the value may be from SQL )and access the value in RMAN script.
    Thanks...Raj

    Raj,
    We have been getting this type of request and it is not possible via RMAN to do that.
    BUT--You could write a sql/plus script to query your variable and produce the RMAN script with the new value.
    Just a suggestion.

  • Can we change the data type of a field based on the value of the field

    HI Gurus,
    My Requirement is as below -- Could you please guide me
    in the Printable Adobe form -- for ex - as usual for dates fields in the Object Pallette the object type is a date/time field  and for quantity/currency fields corresponding fields are taken
    now in case the either the date, quantity or currency is initial in place of displaying 0.00 or empty date we need to display N/A (Not Applicable)
    for this I would like to change the data type of the field
    to put it simply --
    we need to change the data type of date field from DATE&TIME to Char type to hold N/A or  Quantity field to Char field to hold N/A
    how can we realize this in SAP adobe forms
    Thanks in Advace
    Ramchander Rao.K

    Hello Ramchander,
         You cannot change the data type of the field at run time in Adobe forms because the type of field you choose at the time of design level is associated with the data type itself.
    If you want to achieve your requirement, then your main idea should be to set the data type as CHARACTER itself while designing the field in the adobe form itself. CHAR field will comfortably hold the value of Calculation/amount field, Currency field, Amount, Date, Time HHMMSS, Unit Accuracy, Currency key, Floating point number, Numeric text, Client, Language and many other data types.
    After designing the field as TEXT field in Adobe form you have two options.
    Option 1:
    Select the Date field initially as type TEXT field or CHAR field in Adobe forms.
    Suppose the name of the field is TEXTFIELD1, then write the Javascript code on this field in Initialize event as below.
    if ( this.rawvalue == null )
         this.rawvalue = "N/A";
    If the field is not blank, then it will show the date. Else it will show "N/A".
    Option 2:
    Select the Date field initially as type TEXT field or CHAR field in Adobe forms. Do the formatting part in ABAP itself. It will increase the performance. Avoid Javascript as much as possible.
    Suppose you have a DATE variable l_dats of type DATS. Then take another variable l_date of type CHAR. Then write the below ABAP code.
    MOVE l_dats TO l_date.
    IF l_date IS INITIAL.
         l_date = 'N/A'.
    ENDIF.
    Bind the l_date to the TEXT field in the form.
    Even in this case, if the field is not blank, then it will show the date. Else it will show "N/A".
    But I will suggest you to use Option 2 of keeping the AMOUNT, QUANTITY, DATE, TIME fields etc as CHAR or TEXT fields in Adobe form and do the required formatting in ABAP itself.

  • How to prevent numericstepper from setting the value to the defined Maximum when a number greater than maximum is entered in by keyboard and user hits the "Enter" key.

    I need to set the Maximum so that the use can use the mouse to change the value of numericstepper (and not go over a certain number), but at the same time I have to allow the user to enter their value by typing in the text field. When the user enters a number greater than the Maximum, I disable the "Ok" button of the dialog and show a red warning(error message). The issue is that the user can hit "Enter" and numeric stepper would set the value to the Maximum and the dialog box would close and the rest of code would run. I want the numericstepper not to change the value and keep showing the warning even if the user hits the "Enter".
    Note: Setting maxChar does not help since my maximum is 1000, and user might enter 5555
    I would appreciate the help.

    Thanks for trying to help, But
    The issue is that if I set the maximum value of stepper 1 greater than the max value that I want, then the user can select an invalid value(of myMax + 1) when he clicks on the UP arrow of the numeric stepper(which is not acceptable for what I am working on).
    I need to preserve the users invalid number, while not letting the user to select an invalid number by clicking UP key.
    I noticed that when the user enters a number greater than the Maximum, and then click on the down arrow, it would set the value to 1 less than the maximum. This is not acceptable either.

    Hi,
    In the Context attribute tyr to use the properties of formatting where you can have the MINUS sign in the front of the value..
    If this is working fine then when you use any standard export of ALV the same (AS iS) is shown in Excel right...
