Is there a null operator/command in java?

In a lot of languages there is a null statement that does nothing such as NOP in assembler. It's useful if you want to test for something and only perform some action if that test is not true. i.e. it can be cleaner than testing for something to not be true. Is there such a statement in java? I don't see one in the book I'm learning from. Here is an example if I have't made myself clear:
IF(args[0].startsWith("$"))
NOP
else System.out.println("the first argument does not start with a $")

The fact that you did not see it is a sign that it should not be used.And why is that?Because if we ever need this peculiar construct we should make it as obvious as possible. But not big deal:)I don't know. Theoretical situation.
A Class that has "business" aspects, but that is also, in itself, a LinkedList type construct where you can use getNext() to get the next item in the list (null means there are no more), and where certain methods return the current object (in the same manner as StringBuffer's append method), you can then, to iterate through the entire list performing a specific action, simply
TheoreticalClass c = firstTheoreticalClassInstance;
while ((c = c.doSomething().getNext()) != null);which is the same as
TheoreticalClass c = firstTheoreticalClassInstance;
while ((c = c.doSomething().getNext()) != null) {}Both just fancy nothings, but I don't see any clarity problem in either (except maybe for beginners who wouldn't understand that a semicolon at the end of a while/if/for loop/statement effectively ends that statement).
Looking at isolated lines, yes, it might not be clear, but, guaranteeed, there is more code all around that, and it should be perfectly clear that it is a stand alone statement in both cases.
But, yes, okay, I see your point.
In any case, in the OP's situation (and most others), a "not" should be used, rather than any kind of empty block (beside the fact that many IDE's complain about empty blocks, anyway, which would be just plain annoying to have to put up with, IMHO).

  • Send SSH Command using java

    Ok. I hate this, but this is they way they have implemented it. I do not have access to the server code that this applicatio sits on, so I am only able to send specif commands with java through there interface. One of the commands for example is: password_reset "username" "new_password", there is also search_user "username", and uinfo "username". One of the command I really want to send is the password_reset command, but before I can do that I need to establish a ssh connection with username, and password. Not the username or password of the user that I am resetting, but the username and password of a user that has the privilege to reset passwords.
    anyway someone said I could just user the execCommand("password_reset " + username + " " + password ) command. If that is true then How do I do the ssh connection? any examples would be great. I have one, but it is not working for some reason.

    Don't know much about this, but maybe try 'su' and then 'password_reset ...' instead?

  • Running ls command from Java stroed procedure no output

    Hi ,
    I am trying to run ls command from java stored procedure in oracle
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("ls");
    BufferedReader stdInput = new BufferedReader(new
    InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
    BufferedReader stdError = new BufferedReader(new
    InputStreamReader(p.getErrorStream()));
    // read the output from the command
    System.out.println("output of the command run:\n");
    while ((s = stdInput.readLine()) != null) {
    System.out.println(s);
    from java stored procedure in oracle.
    i get output of println statments but it does not go into while loop to print from stdInput.
    Result of running Java stored procedure is -
    output of the command run:
    Call completed.
    when i run the program on client side it works fine.
    Has anybody tried this from java stroed procedure.
    Thanks,
    Jag

    Jag,
    Actually, the question of whether it works for me seems to depend on the version of the OS (or Oracle). On RedHat Linux (Oracle 8.1.6) it didn't work at all, but on Solaris (Oracle 9.0.2) it did. Here's the output from that run:
    SQL> /
    output of the command run:
    init.ora
    initDBPart9i.DBPSun01.ora
    initdw.ora
    lkDBPART9I
    orapw
    orapwDBPart9i
    spfileDBPart9i.ora
    Done
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    But, I did need to change a line of your code to this:
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("/usr/bin/ls");
    your original was:
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("ls");
    You might consider, if possible, use of some of the Java File classes instead of ls, as this might make things more predictable for you. There were some examples in oramag.com a few months ago, but they were pretty simple (you might not need them).
    Hope this helps,

  • Running System Commands using Java

    HI,
    I am developing an application using java which requires some system commands to be run.For example i have to write a java function which can program the windows scheduler to run a particular executable at some time & another one to initiate an ftp.I however do not know how to execute the corresponding commands from java.Is there any way or some specific api(similar to the system command in c) that i can use to perform these operations.I am using j2sdk 1.4.0_01 on a win 98 machine to develop the application.

  • Call an interactive UNIX command from java

    Hi,
    I want to call a UNIX command from java. When issue the command 'htpasswd -c filename username' on UNIX terminal, it asks for the new password and the then confirmation password again (yeah, unfortunately the htpasswd installed on our system does not allow you proivde the password on the command line. So have to work interactively ). Now, I have written a simple java program RunCommand.java. I am hardcoding the password for the htpasswd command in the file (in the real situation, password will be generated dynamically). I want to issue 'java RunCommand' on the UNIX command line and get back the command prompt without being asked for the password twice. The code is below, but the Outputstream does not work as expected. It always asks for inputs. Any idea? Many thanks.
    import java.io.*;
    public class RunCommand {
    public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
    String s = null;
    try {
    String cmd = "htpasswd -c filename username ";
    // run a Unix command
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
    BufferedReader stdInput = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
    BufferedReader stdError = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getErrorStream()));
    OutputStream stdOut = p.getOutputStream();

  • Cannot call the execute command from java code

    Hello,
    I like to add a new user via a java web service.
    Establishing a connection to the OC4J MBean server is no problem. I also can execute the commands 'listAllCommands' and 'help' on the MBean. But if i try to call the execute command, i always get an NoSuchMethodException. Looking at the MBeanInfos 'execute' is listed there as an operation.
    Can anyone explain this to me?

    Hi,
    I basically used the code described at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32110_01/web.1013/b28952/mbeans.htm#CIHFDJBJ to connect to the MBeanServer.
    To invoke 'execute' i used
    MBeanServerConnection con= jmxCon.getMBeanServerConnection();
    con.invoke(new ObjectName(MBEAN_NAME), "execute", new Object[] { COMMAND }, new String[] {});
    where MBEAN_NAME is the ObjectName of the CommandService MBean and COMMAND is a String like "identity add ..."

  • Problem while running dos command from java program

    Dear friends,
    I need to terminate a running jar file from my java program which is running in the windows os.
    For that i have an dos command to find process id of java program and kill by using tskill command.
    Command to find process id is,
    wmic /output:ProcessList.txt process where "name='java.exe'" get commandline,processid
    This command gives the ProcessList.txt file and it contains the processid. I have to read this file to find the processid.
    when i execute this command in dos prompt, it gives the processid in the ProcessList.txt file. But when i execute the same command in java program it keeps running mode only.
    Code to run this command is,
    public class KillProcess {
         public static void main(String args[]) {
              KillProcess kProcess = new KillProcess();
              kProcess.getRunningProcess();
              kProcess = new KillProcess();
              kProcess.readProcessFile();
         public void getRunningProcess() {
              String cmd = "wmic /output:ProcessList.txt process where \"name='java.exe'\" get commandline,processid";
              try {
                   Runtime run = Runtime.getRuntime();
                   Process process = run.exec(cmd);
                   int i = process.waitFor();
                   String s = null;
                   if(i==0) {
                        BufferedReader stdInput = new BufferedReader(new
                               InputStreamReader(process.getInputStream()));
                        while ((s = stdInput.readLine()) != null) {
                         System.out.println("--> "+s);
                   } else {
                        BufferedReader stdError = new BufferedReader(new
                               InputStreamReader(process.getErrorStream()));
                        while ((s = stdError.readLine()) != null) {
                         System.out.println("====> "+ s);
                   System.out.println("Running process End....");
              } catch(Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
         public String readProcessFile() {
              System.out.println("Read Process File...");
              File file = null;
              FileInputStream fis = null;
              BufferedReader br = null;
              String pixieLoc = "";
              try {
                   file = new File("ProcessList.txt");
                   if (file.exists() && file.length() > 0) {
                        fis = new FileInputStream(file);
                        br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fis, "UTF-16"));
                        String line;
                        while((line = br.readLine()) != null)  {
                             System.out.println(line);
                   } else {
                        System.out.println("No such file");
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
              return pixieLoc;
    }     when i remove the process.waitFor(), then while reading the ProcessList.txt file, it says "No such file".
    if i give process.waitFor(), then it's in running mode and program is not completed.
    Colud anyone please tell me how to handle this situation?
    or Is there anyother way to kill the one running process in windows from java program?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sathish

            } catch (Throwable t)
                t.printStackTrace();
    }when i execute the above code, i got output as,
    Execing cmd.exe /C wmic process where "name='java.exe'" get commandline,processid
    and keeps in running mode only.
    If i execute the same command in dos prompt,
    CommandLine
    ProcessId
    java -classpath ./../lib/StartApp.jar;./../lib; com.abc.middle.startapp.StartAPP  2468
    If i modify the command as,
    cmd.exe /C wmic process where "name='java.exe'" get commandline,processid  > 123.txt
    and keeps in running mode only.
    If i open the file when program in running mode, no contents in that file.
    If i terminte the program and if i open the file, then i find the processid in that file.
    Can you help me to solve this issue?

  • Host Commands from Java

    Hello everyone,
    I'm trying to run openVMS host commands via Java using the code listed below, which essentially runs the following host commands, each in turn:
    terry :== "hello"
    sho sym terry
    sho log robin4
    I've tried a few other commands as well, but the ones which assign variables (such as the terry example above), never work, either producing no output as in the example above, or if I did
    define/group "hello" terry
    would produce:
    DCL-W-NOCOMD, no command on line - reenter with alphabetic first character
    So commands that don't print anything to the screen are the ones that are causing problems (they're just setting variables or what not).
    Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get these commands working via java? I really don't know what to think..I've tried checking the format of the commands I'm trying to do, and it's not down to that - the host command I'm running is right and works if done directly.
    Please help! Thank you so much in advance.

    1. Presumably this represents some sort of character user interface (CUI) which is console based.
    finalCommand = new String[3];
    finalCommand[0] = "terry :== \"hello\"";
    finalCommand[1] = "sho sym terry";
    finalCommand[2] = s2;
    final Process pr = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(finalCommand);
    2. This represents an executable to which you are passing command line arguments.
    This isn't a java problem because 1 and 2 are not even close to being the same.
    Java won't do anything that you cannot get the application to do itself.
    Your choices:
    1. Find a way to run the app such that it takes commands from a file. You put the commands in a file and pass that to exec()
    2. Find a way that use stdio (the CUI might represent that but there is no guarantee.) You then use exec() to start the app then use the IO streams to pass the commands to it.
    Notice that my choices do not include an option for passing as command line parameters because I am almost certain that it does not exist.

  • Executing shell commands from Java.

    I want to execute shell commands in Java using the Runtime.exec( String ) method.
    The method works fine under Linux OS, but under Windows '98 the method didn't work at all!
    For example the following call: Runtime.exec( "dir" ) throws an exception showing that the command was not completed. If I replace dir with ls under Linux all is good. What is the problem with the Microsoft Windows '98 ? Is there any solution at my problem ?!
    thx in advance!

    hey JSarmis,
    You can help me... "ls" doesn't work for me on linux.. using Runtime.exec, some commands work, others don't... you may hold the key to what i need? How did u get "ls" to work?

  • Is it possible to run all Dos based command on Java ?

    hello friends
    I run Dos Commands on Java by following code
    try{
    Process p=Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","dir"});
    }catch(Exception e){e.printStackTrace();}
    System.out.println("bye");
    If I run "mkdir" instead of "dir" folder is created in current directory. But in case of "dir" listing of file folders is not displayed to me . means "dir " is not running.
    could any body tell me what to do in this case
    thanks

    ejp wrote:
    'dir' is not an executable program. It is built-in to the command shell. The only way you can execute it is by feeding it to a shell via a batch file.Sorry 'ejp' but 'dir' can be run this way (I have just checked on XP) so there has to be something wrong with the way the OP is processing the results. Since he does not seem to process stdout or stderr and he does not wait for the process to complete I am betting he is falling foul of one or more of the traps. My best bet is that he is expecting a console window to open and the directory listing to appear in it.
