Is there an Apple alternative to using the Asus videophone. Is there a simple FaceTime alternative for an elderly person to use. iPod and docking station maybe?

I have an elderly parent and recently bought a secondhand Asus SV1T video phone to be able to Skype from my Mac, iPad,iPhone etc.  The device was perfect from a usability point of view but when I set it up discovered that the latest vesion of Skype is not supported on the Asus and there is no hope of Asus issueing a firmware upgrade to fix it. So the question is "is there a facetime alternative that an 85 year old can use".  It needs to be simple to operate, always on and reasonably compact.  One thought I had was using an iPod in a speaker dock for power and amplification.  I assume you can then tailor the front screen to simply show the facetime icon.  Anyone got any thoughts?

You would need to have an iPad with 3G, and pay for cellular data service for it.  If you have a wifi-only iPad, you simply cannot access the Internet anywhere that there is no wifi network available.  You could tether it to a wifi hotspot created by a smartphone, though having a smartphone significantly reduces the need for FaceTime, I would think.
