Is WS2012R2E Capable of Bare Metal Restore to UEFI Client?

Hi,
After two weeks of fruitless effort attempting a client bare metal restore to a UEFI machine, I'm now wondering if it is supported in W2012R2E?
This same machine is able to use WDS over the network to do a remote software install. Similarly, two other non-EUFI (BIOS) machines on the same network/server are able to do bare metal restores with no problem.
No matter how the client UEFI machine is configured, it always gets to the same point in the "Full System Restore Wizard" and gets hung up - it can't find the server on the network. (Again, it works fine when using the same WDS server to do a remote
software install - finds the server just fine).
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Let me take your questions one by one:
Was it an error message when the Full System Restore Wizard hung up? Or no any error message, just the wizard hung up?
What happens is that the Full System Restore Wizard reports that it cannot find the server. It then offers an option to either search again or
to manually enter an IP address. When I enter an IP address manually, that's when the "Unknown Network Error" occurs. Note that repeated searches don't help. The Wizard never finds the server. See below where I give the full sequence of events.
When run Full System Restore Wizard, please ping the server with server name and IP address from the client computer. Any find?I
don't know that this is possible. At the point when the wizard is running, it's running under a downloaded image from the server (i.e. there IS connectivity to the server), but there's no OS to go to for the ping command. (If you know of a way to do that,
please let me know and I will try it).
The sequence of events is:
The client computer is set up to boot via PXE over the network.
The client computer receives a small net boot file. A text screen which offers the option to select either an x86 or X64 Full System Restore (I've tried both - doesn't make any difference). 
Selecting one of the option results in another file downloaded from the server. Control is transferred to this file, and the display goes into graphical mode.
A dialog box pops up allowing one to select language. Once that is selected, another window opens that shows progress. At some point in this process, the program indicates that it cannot find network drivers, and they need to be loaded via USB. (Note that,
as a test, I've actually used WDS to load drivers into the image that was downloaded at this point - but it still claims it cannot find network drivers).
A dialog box opens giving the opportunity to click to load drivers.
I click the button. Another dialog opens and tells me to insert a USB key with drivers on it.
I insert a USB key with network drivers. Click the button that says scan for network drivers.
After a few seconds, the drivers are found and a dialog reports that fact.
At that point, the window that appears is the Full System Restore Wizard. It asks to click "Next" to search for Windows Servers.
When I click next, the cursor changes to a "waiting" cursor for about 30 seconds, while presumably the wizard is searching for servers. (Note that the machine just completed downloading at least two files from that very server).
After some time elapses, a dialog appears indicating that the server couldn't be found. It offers two options, "Search Again", or manually enter a server name or IP.
Searching again has the same results. Manually entering an IP or server name results in the "Unknown Network Error" I've referred to.
At this point, you cannot proceed further. Clicking "Next" causes the network error message to come back again. Clicking "Cancel" drops you out of the wizard and the computer reboots.
Please check those log files which were modified when run the Full System Restore Wizard.
I will try this again when I arrive home tonight and examine the logs.

    I have done a windows full server backup on to an external Seagate HDD on a Dell PowerEdge T110 II Server running Windows Server 2008 R2
    I want to clone this and do a Bare Metal Restore on an identical server at home which has Windows Server 2008 R2 on it.
    I boot from the Windows DVD provided, select repair however windows Server 2008 R2 will not find the image of the Seagate drive. The Seagate drive can be seen on the server otherwise. I guess there are options to load the driver, but I don't see them.

    I am using a windows server 2008R2 disk to boot up. Both the servers have windows server 2008R2 on them. I have two licenses for each of the servers. I want to use the server at home as a backup server in case the server in office  goes down. I used
    windows server backup to backup the server at work to a portable USB hard drive. I bought the hard drive home and want to clone the server at work. I heard bare metal restore is the best way to do this. So I booted the server at home with the windows server
    2008 r2 disk that I have and clicked repair. I had attached my seagate portable drive to the usb port so that the server could find the image of the server at work, however the server cant find the hard drive or the server image. Is it a problem with my usb
    hard drive? Do I need a specific type of usb hard drive to do server image backups?
    If I let my server at home boot regularly and it comes up, it can see the image on the hard drive so I dont know how to do the bare metal restore. I know it can be done becuase my IT guy did it when he set up both the servers. I just want to periodically
    clone them so make sure the server at home is updated with the settings of the server at work.

  • Bare metal restore of full server backup fails with RPC error 0x800706BA (server 2012)

    With Windows Server 2012, after creating a successful windows server backup (full server), I am unable to do a bare metal restore of the system.
    EFI System Partition, C:, D: are the volumes on a single array (Raid 5).
    Loading WinRE and launching re-image, the full server restore stops after completing the C: restore just after beginning the D: drive restore (data volume) with the error with the message about RPC error 0x800706BA, unavailable.
    The system will not boot as a result of the failure. 
    What may be causing this?

    I think I have two things working against me here... one, Volume Shadow Copy service wasn't running in WinPE and two.. the D: volume contains data deduplication.
    I think this is causing some of my problems.
    Is there an additional service that I need to start in WinPE to get a volume that was deduplicated restored perhaps using wbadmin?

    The hardware system is identical; however, I am increasing storage capacity from 12TB to 16TB.  Basically, the system is the same, just new hard drives (4x4TB versus 4x3TB).  Drives are all identical enterprise class drives and I am actually using
    the same system (backup, swap drives then restore).
    I tried both using the WinRE restore (re-image) with the backup set, and tried using wbadmin.  Both produce same RPC unavailable messages (although using the GUI based tool via WinRE provides the additional error code #).
    I do not have any idea what to look at to try to figure this one out.

    and in my case, this lab server does in fact act also as a DC as well as a file server...  do I need to spin up a secondary controller (perhaps in a VM on another machine) to do this restore?

  • Windows Server 2008 bare-metal restore

    We have been running a Windows Server 2008 Standard on an old HP ML350 server for many years.  The old server finally kicked the bucket so we performed a bare-metal restore (using the Windows built-in restore from backup function) to a new (used) HP
    DL380 G6 server...  the restore worked perfectly.  The new server came right up and everything is working just as it was on the old server except for one major problem.  The new server won't activate.
    We used the Automated phone line activation utility but after putting in the zillion character installation id, the phone activation voice says the product is invalid and hangs up on me.  We tried the "buy a new product key" option that the
    Windows Activation utility on the server offers as an option but when we get to the website it says the product is no longer available.
    We have the original case and media that we purchased many years ago and the Product Key is on the card that came with the disk (actually 2 discs  32 and 64 bit versions).
    What can we do at this point?  We don't want to purchase another copy of Windows Server 2008 for fear we will just run into the same problem.  The product we have is valid and has been running on our old server for many years.  We can't upgrade
    to Server 2012 because we believe that 2012 only supports 64 bit versions and we must stay on a 32 bit platform so that existing (and irreplaceable) applications will continue to run. 
    Any suggestions?

    After trying several Microsoft remedies that did not resolve the problem we decided to just buy another copy of Windows Server 2008.  We then used the option to change the product Id to the new key that came with the new copy (sealed container) of Windows
    2008 Server, but after doing so we are still unable to activate the product and in fact we are no longer even given the option to Activate... our desktop is black and there is a message in the lower right corner of the screen that says this copy of Windows
    is not genuine.  When we select Activate on the Computer properties screen we are given an option to go online to correct the problem but when we select that option it brings us to a Windows 7 page.  It's as if MS no longer handles Windows 2008
    server activation issues.
    Life shouldn't be this complicated.  Is it possible that even though the new copy of Windows 2008 Server comes with 2 disks... 32 bit and 64 bit versions... that the activation key is only good for 64 bit installations?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    When you boot from the Windows OS disks to do a bare metal restore, you get to the point where it asks you where your backup is, you point to it, and it performs the restore.  However, when you are finished, there is also a Recovery partition ahead of
    the OS partition.  When did the Recovery partition get made, before it asked where the backup is, or after?  Respond only if you know.

    Could you please let me know the size of the partition you mentioned? Is it 0KB(256KB) partition or 100MB(350MB) Reserved partition or 1.5 (or above) GB parititon? Please capture a screenshot of the disk management.

    If the size is larger than 1GB, it may be the recovery partition contains the recovery data or OEM partition.

  • Linux Server Bare Metal Restore

    Hi,
    As our OEL environment grows, I was wondering what products others use to ensure 'Bare Metal Recovery' to like or unlike hardware in the case of a 'disaster'.
    We have Veritas Netbackup in house for nightly backups, but do not have the Bare Metal Restore piece.
    Since our Linux environment is new and growing...I wanted to look at all options.
    Any opinions, good or bad experiences?

    Have a look at 'kickstart' for restoring the bare server.
    The next phase is in most enterprise situations the SAN or NAS is connected.
    The last phase is a restore of the server as a whole with a backup solution of choice.
    There are numerous implementations possible. If you install the oracle software on SAN/NAS as much as possible, there's only a few things which need to be arranged on the local server/local server disks (think /etc/oratab, /etc/oraInst.loc, stop/start scripts etc.) which means there's no need to restore the server as a whole.

  • Failed bare metal restore

    I have a Dell non-uefi tower which originally came with Vista, subsequently upgraded to Windows 7,  then to 8, then 8.1. My backup for the unit includes all drives with letters. After a successful backup, I took the old boot drive out and put a larger
    ssd in its place and then did a bare metal recovery/restore.  this appeared successful, but boot came up with the following error code: 0xc000000e.  I can't find what this means.
    I then booted from a usb recovery drive. Startup repair (advanced options) reported that it could not repair the PC.
    the 'refresh your PC' option told me that the hard drive was locked and could not proceed.
    Looking at the replaced hard drive in disk management, I noted that there is an OEM partition without a drive letter. Don't know if this could be a problem.
    Suggestions?  Comment?

    I'm still leaning toward an improperly configured boot manager/MBR. The restore program may not be restoring these tiems.

    You may also want to try to manually fix the issue with BCDedit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2004518
    The important part is the disk part -- then try restoring to that drive.
    The other item is that since the drive is larger, you may be hitting the maximum size supported by the old Dell Tower's BIOS. If the original OS is 32-bit and the hard drive is larger than 2 Tb, you may also have issues.

  • Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 Bare Metal Restore 0x0000007B Stop Error

    Hi,
    I am tring to restore a Server 2008 R2 Standard Ed (full installation) RTM to a virtual machine, from a full Windows Server Backup image taken of a physical machine (Dell PE 2970).  All restores fine, and looks good until it tries to boot,
    when a Stop Error occurs, with the following error:
    *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)
    I believe the non-bracketed portion means "INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE".
    There is only the System Reserved volume + a C: volume (system volume) + F: volume (DVD drive) on the original server.  It has had other volumes in it before, which are correctly listed in the MountedDevices registry key, but they have not been physically
    present for a while.
    The virtual disk I'm trying to restore to is several GBs larger than the original virtual disk on the RAID controller (2 disks in RAID 1).
    I can't figure out why the server isn't booting.  I've successfully restored Server 2008 machines from physical machines to VMs before, including servers using hardware RAID cards (e.g. Dell SAS 6/iR).  The only difference I can think of is
    that this is Server 2008 R2, this is a 2 proc server (I've tried several virtual proc numbers on the VM to no avail), and the RAID controller is PERC 6/i, and this is the first server I've tried with that particular RAID card.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it's to point out that I'm looking in the wrong direction.

    Sorry for the long delay in getting time to test this, been flat out but got a chance today to rigorously run through some scenarios - and I'm absolutely thrilled to confirm we have a solution!!! :¬)  At long last, thank you immensely for your post
    and the original link - the steps above alone didn't work so I kept testing and and with the help of the link you gave modified the process a bit, and here's the the final working solution (all of this works for Windows 7 as well):
    After completing the BMR process don't restart.
    Select Command Prompt.
    regedt32<CR>
    Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, File>Load Hive>[restored volume]:\Windows\System32\Config\SYSTEM>Open>Key Name = Restored_HKLM>OK.
    Expand Restored_HKLM\ControlSet001\services and ensure the following are set:
      If restored to a (VMWare) VM then ensure intelide>Start = 0 and LSI_SAS>Start = 0; msahci>Start = 3 and pciide>Start = 3
      NB: I have only tested this with VMWare VMs (Player/Workstation and vSphere) but will likely translate across to Microsoft (e.g. HyperV) VMs. The LSI_SAS value is definitely required, I couldn't boot in a VM until this was chaned to 0.
      Or if restoring to a physical machine with native HDD controller
    then ensure msahci>Start = 0 and pciide>Start = 0; intelide>Start = 3 and LSI_SAS>Start = 3
    Highlight Restored_HKLM and then File>Unload Hive.
    Close windows and restart.
    You should now have a successfully booting restored Server 2008 R2! :¬)
    (Remember if it's a new add-in RAID card and you supply the drivers it will successfully inject them into the restored OS - see previous posts in this thread)
    NB: Don't worry if you have restarted without making the changes and it Blue Screens, come back through these options and if set correctly it will boot normally - nothing is damaged by the Stop Error, and the ide settings can be turned on and off with no
    permanent effect on the OS. I.e. change and restart until you hit the right combination required - I've tested this copious times and when changed back to the correct settings the OS boots again without issue.
    If in doubt, turn on all possible required services e.g. set both intelide = 0/pciide = 0 and msahci = 0, or set all of these to 0 and it will still boot with the correct driver/s:
       aliide, amdide, atapi, cmdide, iastorv, intelide, msahci, pciide, viaide and LSI_SAS.
    I don't recommend this due to the overheads it could introduce, but it will work and will get the machine up as quickly as possible if confidence in the exact combination required is in doubt.
    Settings for typical destination machines - skip if desired:

    MailStane thank you once again for posting - it's helpded no end resolving a big bug bear with Server 2008 R2 and Win 7's backups, and while I'm still nonplussed at to why these manual steps are necessary when 2008/Vista worked flawlessly without intervention
    (wondering if all the drivers are on by default but haven't checked it out yet), we now have a confirmed quick and viable fix.  Thanks for being generous enough to share and well done!
    Vikas, thank you for at least giving us a look in when the rest of Microsoft refused.  If you want to publicise this information feel free (any credit to MailStane and/or me I'm sure would be much appreciated) - it affects anyone
    in a Server 2008 R2/Win 7 DR scenario where the original hardware can't be replaced or emergency measures dictate using whatever's available whether home or business, and as SCDPM 2007/2010 uses the built-in backup this procudure applies equally.  On
    another note, this has also again opened the doors (IMO) to DPM as a viable all round backup solution, as the one stop backup including system state restores is a big bonus over third party block based backup solutions that painlessly allow different hardware
    restores for R2/Win 7 (personally tested) but do not allow for system state restores.  Now if compression were included in an SP or the next version it will have reached that always elusive "ideal" ;¬).
    RidvanSeber - if you're still having difficulty hope the steps above to load the restored Registry hive help.

  • Bare Metal Restore of AD

    I have inherited a domain setup at my new company and unfortunately a few of the 2008 R2 domain controllers only have 1 hard drive installed so if that drive fails the server is gone.  I am going to purchase a second hard drive so I can get this DC
    on a RAID system, but was wondering the best way to do so.  I was looking into doing a BMR of the domain controller but I have some concerns since it is a DC.  I would perform the backup first, add the second drive, create a RAID1 and then boot the
    Windows DVD and restore from the BMR that I created earlier.  My plan is to do this all in one day.  
    Has anyone successfully used BMR on a DC?  The server does have other roles beside just being a DC so I really don't want to have to rebuild the server.

    Just a word of caution, even though I am a hard core Microsoft fan I have experienced issues with their backup and restore solution which I find is not entirely reliable (One reason why I convinced my employers to spend $14K on a reliable AppAssure solution,
    This solution has saved my bacon more than once and has in my opinion paid for itself in less than a year). By all means try the built in solution, testing it first on test servers so that you can work out the issues that might arise. A couple of other things
    I would do though.
    1) Purchase a commercial backup and restore software and create a backup from them as a precaution. There are several good ones out there for under $100
    Acronis True Image 2013,
    Macrium Reflect Standard,
    Paragon Backup & Recovery 12
    and have excellent customer support.
    2) If this Domain controller is your FSMO holder, if you can ....transfer them to another server before you carry out your plan then create your backup...you do not want two FSMO Role holders on the same network after you restore. If your backup goes bad,
    having to seize these roles will just add to your problems.

  • Disk Utility in Lion 10.7.4 for Bare Metal Disaster Recovery??

    We just got our 15" Macbook Pro back from repair of a catastrophic hard disc failure. Wow. An older Seagate Momentus XT 500 toasted its little self. It seems most of our data are intact. If any software on the *new* hard disc get corrupted, we need a fairly straightforward disaster recovery process.
    I need to ask if anyone has successfully used Disk Utility to create a (bare metal) disaster recovery image of everything on their hard drive, including all their software *and* the perfectly functioning OS. We'd like to be able to restore a complete disc image of the new Seagate Momentus 750 XT - taken from a 1 TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB drive - to the Macbook.
    Has anyone done this successfully? Thanks very much for your help!

    Time Machine, SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are some of the utilities that will allow you to backup your disk and do a complete restore.

  • WIndows Server Bare-Metal Backup

    I have just completed a bare metal installation of 2008 Server R2 from a Microsoft 2008 Server DVD image.
    I have found a (OEM Partition) 63MB, standard System partition from Dell as expected.
    I have found a (OS Partition) 2.01GB.  I believe this is the standard WinRE partition created by the Microsoft installer, considering I can do an F8 boot, and select Repair Server.  The interesting thing is that it was created as a FAT32 partition,
    and it is apparently hidden since there is no driver letter assigned in Disk Management.
    I then tried to used Windows Server Backup to complete a bare-metal backup so I could test it.  But Windows Server Backup will not backup the FAT32 partition.  It indicates I must convert it to NTFS.
    Am I correct, is this the WinRE partition?
    How can I convert it to NTFS considering there is no driver letter assignment?

    I assume that this is the Dell recovery partition that is used to
    restore your computer’s software to the factory settings. Many years ago, Dell started shipping computers with a small Dell Utility partition hidden at the front of the hard disk, followed by the main (Windows operating system) partition. For information,

    However, after you installing the new operating system, the boot file is changed, you may not be able to access this recovery partition. Currently you
    could either format this partition to free the space and
    make your own WinRE partition on the hard disk or contact Dell to rebuild the recovery partition.

  • Bare Metal Deployments: The BMC can't have IP Address defined in logical network?

    I have defined a logical network, a logical switch, and a port profile.  I apply the logical switch (the NIC teaming settings) and a virtual network adapter that inherits the hosts network configuration (pass through config. no software defined networking)
    to each of my Hyper-V hosts successfully.
    The issue occurs once I have defined that logical network, I can no longer deploy bare metal hosts because the BMC obtains an IP within that logical network.  You see the BMC IPs and NICs are on the same subnet/VLAN.
    What's the best practice or perhaps best method to get around this issue?

    I am not sure if I follow you on this one.
    You have created a logical network for your BMC in VMM? If so, why have you done that?
    The bare-metal process requires both PXE and
    DHCP during this process, and the scope should therefore be in DHCP and not VMM for this purpose. 
    Can you try to do that? (If this is a lab environment, you could add the DHCP service to your PXE server or even VMM server).

  • Can i run Mac OS X on Mac Mini under a "bare metal" Hypervisor?

    Unfortunately, I can't leave Windows because of heavy amount of legacy software which cannot be easily transfered to Mac OS X (for example, databases running on MSSQL).
    On the other side I like Mac Mini hardware for its size, noise level and power consumption and want to try Mac OS X (buying it only to replace Max OS X with Windows would be insane).
    So, to avoid buying a separate computer, I want to run both operating systems simultaneously under a "bare metal" Hypervisor (VMWare ESXi, Hyper-V etc.).
    Using BootCamp to run either Mac OS X or Windows doesn't fit my needs. Running Windows as a guest OS in Parallels - doesn't fit them too.
    Both OS should be able to run at the same time, and Windows should be on 24h a day.
    I know that a hypervisor can be installed on Mac Mini. I know also that running Windows on it won't be a problem.
    The only question is - will the Mac OS X Lion run under hypervisor?

    VMWare ESXi should support Lion and Mountain Lion, both in terms of it having been done and beeing allowed by Apple's license.
    Note: Apple's license only allows hosting two virtual OS X machines on a single host.
    In addition to ESXi, there is also Parallels Server for Mac Bare Metal Edition. See http://www.parallels.com/uk/products/server/mac/baremetal/technical-resources/ I merely mention it for completeness, I would stick to ESXi since it is 'free'.
    You could consider running OS X as the host operating system and Windows as a guest VM using VirtualBox. VirtualBox can be configured to start automatically and invisibly on the Mac host. You could then use Microsoft RDP to connect to the running VM. Its services like SQL Server would of course be running and accessible as normal.
