Is your problem caused by your PSU?

Welcome to the forum! If you are having a problem, this is probably the best place to come to! But BEFORE you post with your troubles, make sure first you have read the Forum Rules, and the Suggestions to Posting And Getting Better Answers stickies.
Now, the most common problems we see here in the Forums are those relating to your Power Supply Unit (PSU). That metal box with wires coming out of it is far more important than you think. Especially when it comes to upgrading a PC.
You may have had a case which came with a PSU that was fairly cheap, and the board and CPU you had previously may have run with no problems at all. But then the time comes when you want to upgrade that mobo and CPU, and thats when the problems start....
"Hi, I just upgraded to a K7N2 Delta 2 board, but when I power on the system, I cannot run the CPU at its correct FSB!"
"I just put together a system based around KM4M-V board with Athlon XP3000, but the fans spin for a second and then stop..."
"I've replaced my old Geforce 4 MX440 with a Geforce 7600GS, but there are dots and lines all over the screen"
"i installed Windows fine on this KT6 Delta board, but when I try to run any 3D games the system just completely locks up..."
A lot of people at this point have already decided that its MSI's fault, and that they make "rubbish" motherboards. But they have failed to consider the one piece of hardware that often gets overlooked...
The Power Supply Unit. The often overlooked PC hardware
"So what do I need?"
Most modern mobos utilise two power connectors, the standard 20pin ATX connector that all boards need, and an auxiliary 4pin connector known sometimes as JPWR1 or ATX2. This connector provides a seperate 12v supply for the CPU, as most modern CPUs draw heavily on this power line.
If your power supply doesn't have this 4pin connector, then you may as well throw it away now and get a new one.
Secondly, you need to assess the specs of your PSU. There is another sticky here which warns of Q-Tec PSUs not correctly advertising their specs, which goes into more technical detail, but basically there is more to a PSU than the output given in watts, eg 300w, 420w, 550w. A good quality 380w PSU can be much better than a poor 550w one, that is why we ask you for the make of your PSU.
PSUs supply power to your system through several "rails", the most important being the 12v, 5v and 3.3v ones. The current supplied through these rails is measured in amperes (amps), and is usually listed on the sticky label on the side of the PSU, similar to the pictures shown below:
Two very different PSUs. The one on left has poor 12v rail and will cause problems. The one on right is much better![/i]
If your board has this 4pin connector, then you need a modern PSU which has an emphasis on the 12v rail, as this supplies most of the power to your CPU, graphics card, hard drive(s) and CD/DVD drives. For a basic SocketA board, such as KM4M-V, 15a should be sufficient, whereas a performance board such as KT880 or K7N2 Delta2 will need 18a or more. AMD64 boards have greater requirements, especially if you are running a dual-core CPU with two graphics cards in SLI; refer to their forums for specific advice.
If your board doesn't have a 4pin connector, such as KT3 or KT4 series, then your PSU should be a slightly older type, where the power balance favours the 3.3v and 5v rails. 12v rail on these boards is used to power motors in drives and fans, etc. As 3.3v and 5v are essentially drawn from the same source in ATX PSUs, you will never get the total output you see listed on the label together, which is why you must also consider the "Max Combined Output" of the 3.3v & 5v rails
"But it worked fine on my old system!"
Older PSUs were designed for older mobos, which mainly drew on the 5v and 3.3v rails to power the CPU and other onboard devices, leaving the 12v rail to power drive motors in HDDs, CD drives and floppy drives. As newer CPUs become more power hungry, the mobos become more reliant on a 12v supply to "feed" the CPU, so older PSUs cannot cope with extra demands.
So technically yes, your PSU may have been well able to cope with your previous hardware configuration, but now you have upgraded, it could simply be that your PSU is not able to supply correct power demands of your new mobo...
"So is my PSU any good?
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any hard set guide to what amps to look for in a PSU to power a certain mobo/CPU combination. You can browse through the forum, and there are many suggestions what to look for.
If you want to ask for help, then please avoid people asking the same questions again, and tell us the specs of your PSU: list the brand, the output in watts, and the amp ratings on the 12v, 5v and 3.3v rails. Saying you have a 420w PSU is irrelevant, as there are better quality 360w PSUs, than some cheaper 550w models. We want to see: "My PSU is a Codegen 350w (3.3v/20a, 5v/30a, 12v/12a)", not "My PSU is 500w". If you provide this information, you will get better and faster advice. Just supplying a make and model name and expecting users to search the internet to find your PSU specs is just a wee bit rude, as they are already giving up their time to help you!
How can I test if my PSU is causing the problem?
Try another better PSU. See if you can borrow one off a friend. Maybe you have another computer at home? Either way, there is no point trying a PSU that is the same or weaker than the one you already have.
Also just because a PSU works on another computer, doesn't automatically mean it will be powerful enough for yours. Don't forget, a PSU that works on a PIII system probably won't work on a new Athlon XP system.
If you do decide you want to buy a new power supply, then do all your homework first. Compare prices and specs, and look for reviews. But don't trust all reviews! Not everyone tests PSUs properly, some will rate PSUs if they have a shiny gold finish and a fancy LED, without even glancing at the performance.
When shopping for PSUs, either online or in a store, are the specs available? if not, then visit the manufacturer's website. You could spend $/£100 on a flashy PSU with six fans and rainbow LED lights () but it could be worse than yours. A good quality PSU could last you for years, and maybe another couple of upgrades. Don't spend more than you can afford, but don't skimp on the specs at all costs.
If you plan on doing more upgrades, it would pay to invest in a very good high quality PSU, that way you know it will last through your next upgrades. Buying a PSU now that just meets your requirements may cause problems if you upgrade a lot of hardware later, then your new PSU is once again not powerful enough.

Are you using a dynamic image in your report? Like an image that comes from a CLOB or BLOB in your database? If so, are you sure it is base64 encoded?
I'm having a very similar problem. I get the error when using an image bigger than 6KB (8KB after base64 encoding). It seems APEX cuts the end off of values too big for it's liking (total generated XML for the row should not exceed 32K I suppose).
The errormessages I get when using a non base64 encoded clob or an image that's bigger than 6KB are the same as yours.

  • Report your Problems since upgrading your iPhone 3GS 32GB to iOS4

Upgrade to iOS4 gave me over 100 new features and some *major bugs*.
Mostly annoying for me is that the _GPS function isn't working_, following apps are currently not assisting me anymore:
-Navigon, no GPS signal found, no navigation or fix possible
-Google Maps, no GPS signal found.
-RunKeeper, no GPS signal found, no control of my workout
-SBB Mobile, no GPS signal found, can't locate me and recommend fasted way home
-HeyWay, no GPS signal found, can't send my location request others
-iPushIt, no GPS signal found, can't send my location
-PingChat! 2, no GPS signal found, can't send my location
-WhatsApp, no GPS signal found, can't send my location
-search.ch, no GPS signal found, can't send my location
-GPS MotionX, no GPS signal found, can't send my location
    and many more.
Which functions don't work for you since you upgraded to iOS4?

I upgraded to the iOS4 last week and really liked it. I use this extensively for running my business. I'm located 2 1/2 hours away from apple store.
For a couple of days my phone wasn't reliably ringing. I kept checking to make sure it wasn't on silent and the volume was all the way up, which it was. Then yesterday I went to pick up my phone and it had the Restore Needed message was locked out. I went this morning to restore and I keep getting error 1002. I have been through every suggestion on what to do and still error 1002. I have never modified or done anything to my iPhone. My warranty expired last month. Apple doesn't mention error 1002 and from reading various blogs, when they take it in they have been told a multitude of reasons including water damage but all resulting in saying they had to get a replacement. My phone hasn't been near any water. It hasn't been dropped. But now I have a useless phone. I have reinstalled iTunes, I have turned off firewalls, I have tried restoring from another computer that it worked on before. Anyone else having problems?

  • For those with RSD: what is your Problem Description?

I just got the box by DHL to send my MacBook with RSD to Memphis. On the other side of the shipping label is:
    Problem Description: No Power/No Light.
This obviously doesn't describe the problem. So, others with RSD that are sending your MacBooks to Memphis: what does your Problem Description say?
I found an old post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2889831&#2889831) about this but that was made before this problem became widespread like it is now.

BOTH BOXES I've received in the last two months (one each for the TWO TIMES I've sent my MB in, once for RSD, second time cause it died completely with 15 minutes of getting it back from the RSD repair) said "No Power/No Light," but through my discussions (many) with AppleCare, they are aware of the actual problem.

Hi everyone,I'm new here. I've been reading about all of the problems everyone has been having with their X-Fi's. I realise how everyone must feel that they spent ?XX or ?XXX getting a brand spanking new soundcard that claimed to be the best money could buy. I'm here to try and get this sorted for you. Let me explain. I'm a computer enthusiast. I, like a lot of you, have an awesome computer. However, i don't have an X-Fi (one is on the way to me though). I'm not here to show off my specs. I'm here to try and offer a solution. I've been thinking about this. And i thought, why don't we, as a community, make some modified drivers, or, some application that can read the BIOS chip on the X-Fi (i assume they have some sort of BIOS chip, like most GPU's). I don't have much experience in reading system data, but i do know about programming. Or perhaps some sort of system patch? The "Screech of death" and the "cracking and popping" seems to happen on a wide variety of system configurations, but does seem more prevalent on Asus boards. I have a theory that it occurs due to the FSB/HTT being too high. Perhaps someone could try this for me:?) Go into BIOS and change your HTT or FSB Multiplier down one step. So if you have set it at 5X, set it to 4X. Then, try and see if you can replicate the problem. If it reoccurs, then try lowering it one more just to be sure. If it doesn't reoccur, then we have one part of the problem solved. If it does, then we can remove that. Next, IRQ's. I realise this has been posted a lot around here. But, this is for those of you with some sort of Onboard audio (which are a lot of you i imagine). I've done a bit of research with my own system (Epox EP9NPAJ SLI motherboard, which is NF4 SLI Chipset) and i've discovered that the onboard audio, is sharing with the Primary?PCI IDE Controller. Now, even though IRQ Sharing is part of the PCI specification, has anyone thought of disabling onboard audio? Or completely disabling that IRQ? Now, if you don't have an FDD, you could potentially try assigning IRQ 6 to the X-Fi as IRQ 6 is a uni'versal IRQ that is used for the FDD. If that doesn't work, perhaps you could try the following:?) You need to disable your onboard LAN and all references to LAN and NVidia in your BIOS.2) In IRQ's, assign the NVidia Netbus IRQ to the X-Fi. Ususally, this is IRQ 22, but you should check this in Device manager in Windows (View ---> Resources by Type ---> Interrupt Request ---> Nvidia Network Bus Enumerator). Obviously, this means you lose networkability, but if it solved your problem, you can always buy a PCI network card. If not, then reassign the IRQ to the Nvidia Netbus to reenable networking. Next one, PCI Slot. Again, i know this has been mentioned a lot, but try changing?the PCI slot that the X-Fi is in. If it still causes problems, then try one or more of the steps above. Next, memory. I don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but it may help. Try this, go into your BIOS and loosen your memory timings. So, if you have memory timings of 3-3-3-5-T, try adjusting it to 3-3-3-5-2T. If this solves your problem, good for you! If not, then try changing it to 3-3-3-7-T or 3-3-3-7-2T. Again, if this solves your problem, well done! If not, readjust your timings to what they were before. You could also try using a lower memory divider. So if you have 200 divider, try 83, or even 66. Solved your problem? Nice! Not solved? Sorry. I realise that people are very stressed about the problems, but i would appreciate it if you didn't flame me. I am not here to interfere, i'm simply here to try and provide my knowledge to you as best i can (i'm currently studying for Network+, A+, Customer Support (ITSST: Information Technology Systems Support Technician) at college). I do have a background in Computers, and even though i'm only 7, i know about things like this. No, i don't work for Creative. I am not part of their team, neither support, technical or software. I just want to work towards a solution. Let me know if there are any problems, or if you have any suggestions or any case studies i could use. Perhaps you could also post the following for me at the bottom of your message (please press the enter key first and then write the information in bold):?Motherboard Manufacturer (E.G. Asus, Epox, Etc.)Chipset on that board (E.G. NF4 SLI, Via K8T900, Etc.)Single VGA Card, SLI or CrossfireMemory Type (E.G. DDR DIMM, DDR2 DIMM, Etc.)Speaker Setup used (E.G. Multimedia/2.0, 2., 5., Etc.)Problems you have experienced with relation to the X-Fi (E.G. Squeeking, Popping, Etc.) Write all that apply to you. That's all i need to know. It should help me come to a solution and i plan to present a case study to both the community, the motherboard manufacturers that are affected most, chipset manufacturers that are affected most and Creative themselves. Like i said earlier, please don't flame me. I realise that almost all of you have been in contact with Creative. I also plan to present the case study to them along with possible causes and solutions. Please do not flame me for planning to do this as i am only here to try and help you out. If we, together, as a community can get to the bottom of this, then we can let the whole world know that we know what's wrong and how it can possibly be solved. • Is anyone else having problems with syncing your phone & iPad since the last update?

is anyone else having problems with syncing your phone & iPad since the last update?

Here's the problems I'm having with iPad 2 and iOS 5.1:
Okay ... so, because I had less than a 1 Gig left (as reported by iTunes) on my 64Gig iPad, and the majority of the space was being used by "Photos" ... I decided to not keep my PC photos directory in sync with my iPad (Windows 7). So, in iTunes, I unchecked the option to sync computer photos to the iPad. I got the standard popup warning message that my iPad would not contain those albums after the next sync. I clicked OK and proceeded to sync expecting to have lots of space freed up.
But weird things happened after syncing.
    (1) I still have all my photos on my iPad .... nothing disappeared at all. (And performed multiple syncs to try to force the change ... still nothing has been removed from my iPad.)
    (2) Somehow, I gained 20 Gigs of free space, as reported by both iTunes and my iPad as well.
Anyone know what's going on here?
I do have iMovie and another movie making app, Avid. Both of these contain projects that refer to photos in albums that were supposed to be removed after the sync ... but I can't imagine that would keep them there. Anyone have any ideas?
I also installed the iPad app, iPhoto. I noticed that it build a directory listing and continuously want to update that listing from time to time.
Would any of these things cause the iTunes photo sync changes to be ignored? And, how did I get free space to report back with an additional 19Gig or so, when there's no change at all.
    Unsure what's going on ...

  • How to sort out your problems with the os 4 upgrade.

I'm in the UK, and I am an Orange customer. I have just been in contact with an amazing guy called Lee, who has sorted my problem for me. His advice.......
    go into
Settings, general, scroll down to bottom of the screen to Reset, and tap on it.
Go to 3rd option, Reset Network Settings and tap on it, a red box will appear, tap to accept. Screen will close and Apple logo will appear, LEAVE to power up on its own, and re-enter your wi-fi connection password information.
If this fails to cure your problem, Connect your iphone to a different computer,
When your iphone shows up in itunes, click on it and do a RESTORE WITHOUT BACKUP, leave until your phone has restored and then plug into your own computer. You can now back up from your own computer information
    Hope this solves our problems

The file to download the app for Android is not working from my phone--it says that the file isn't there. However it does see the one for the Iphone (even though it can't use it). I've tried it multiple times and continue to get the same message: "NOT FOUND The requested item could not be found". I also tried through the Market application on the phone but ended-up with the same result.
I'm very computer literate and am pretty sure the problem is on your end. If this is the case then no one can download the app. I considered that perhaps because it's still in Beta that it was removed due to some other type of software issue. I would really like to use Firefox on my new Droid (2.0); when with this be available?

Firefox will not appear in the Market for most phones with incompatible hardware. You can check if your phone is supported here:
    https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android
Even on some supported devices, a bug in the Market software prevents Firefox from showing up. This may be related to the fairly recent Android Market app update. If you go to Settings/Applications/Market and choose "Uninstall" you can uninstall the update, and then search for and install Firefox from the marketplace.
Or, if you have a supported phone, you can download the app directly by typing this address into your phone's browser: http://bit.ly/fxbeta3
(Note: To download the app directly for an AT&T phone, you will have to search for instructions on "sideloading" the APK file, since AT&T disables the option to install from non-Market sources.)

  • The password for the account "account name" was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help.

I have a user who's Active Directory password is going to expire. I had her reset her password by going to apple > system prefs > user > and clicking change password. She received the error "The password for the account "account name" was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help."
I had her change her password via the kpasswd command in terminal and that changed her password on the server sucessfully however the laptop has FileVault on it. Filevault is not recognizing the new password just the old password.
I have deleted the keychain which didn't resolve and now I am going to decrypt and reencrypt the drive. I'm hoping this is an isolated issue I have over 25 laptops configured like this.

I "think" the trick was unbinding and rebinding the computer account.
After unencrypting and trying to reencrypt Filevault would still not take the new password.
Rebooted the prompt to update the keychain appeared. Updated the keychain. Filevault would still not take the new password.
Unbinded and rebinded the computer account. It worked and let me add the user to filevault.
