ISight running by itself??!

After waking my iMac from sleep, the little green indicator light was on next to the iSight camera, and I cannot find the application using it. I've tried using any program that might be using it, but they said it was in use. So I cannot force quit something that does not show up in "running apps".
How do I resolve this without restarting? (If that would work)
EDIT: This is nothing to do with installing the 10.4.8 OS update - I haven't yet ...

  • Help!! ipod touch 2nd gen (8gb) is running by itself!

    I just got a ipod touch 2nd gen (8gb) from a friend.
This ipod has some problem.. it is running by itself! When I on it, and for example go to Settings, it will just randomly go to a next selection as if responding to my selection but I never touch anything.. I've tried to reset to factory settings and it's updated to ios4.2.1 but still no use..
    anyone can help? greatly appreciated!!

When restoring an iPod to factory setting fails to resolve a problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Extreme Noob Question-How do I make it run by itself?

Well recently I found the source code for Asteroids so I copy it into JCreator and save it as a .java file. Than I make a html file so I can play it. Everything runs fine but how do I make it a stand alone program? I want to be able to put Asteroids on my desktop and click on it and I want the game to run. Well I've been having some trouble. 1. I don't know which file I put on my desktop the .java one or the html one? Also no matter which one I choice, when I click on it, it still asks me what to run it with. I find Java and click on it. That a message poops up on the screen that says "Unable to launch the specified application" and than I remember that when I was looking at Asteroids' source code it said that it was a applet. So I don't know how to change it into an application and Im not completely sure what I use to run it with. Yes I know in know I rambled (In my topic) but can some help me out?

Yes I know I should learn to make programs without using JCreator but that might take a while (I'm guessing months, if not more) but I just want to do this one program. So does it need to be a application? Or if it okay that it's a applet? Also when I make it into a JAR file well it be able to run by itself?

  • ISight voluntarily disconnects itself

    Hi,
I'm using MacBook Pro 15" 4,1 version. I'm using Hardware Growler, so I'm notified when a device is connected/disconnected from my Mac.
After updating to 10.6.3 my internal iSight started disconnecting itself on regular bases. It's more probable when I'm using it, for example with flash youtube video recorder (stable version of flash player and the new RC version as well). Sometimes it happens even when I'm not using the iSight at all.
It disconnects, connects, disconnects, connects and sometimes it ends on disconnecting itself and the only way to reconnect it is to reboot, but sometimes it ends on connecting itself and it works fine for a few hours and then the whole process happens again.
No, it is not showing up in System Profiler when it's "disconnected". I even disassembled my Mac to reconnect the cable, but this was not effective.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.

If you keep a program like Photo Booth open for a while, do you still get disconnects?

  • Making a Java Program run by itself

Hi all I was wondering if there is anyway for me to make my game run by itself without using my java compiler bluej.
Here is some information on my program I think will be helpful
    Its a Class
I save highscores to a notepad file
I use a lot of images
    I have audio within it
I also have classes out side of it that runs inside of it like Emeny, Item

edit: I don't know if you've heard of idea, but many people in this forum swear by it: start simple and do things one step at a time. For example:
Doing something new like JARring an application?
Start with a "hello world"-type program. You may not have a console window when running the JAR, so you should write to a file, or use a JOptionPane.
Try accessing a resource, like an image or sound file zipped in the JAR. Hint: don't use file paths or File objects -- the resource is part of a JAR, now. See:

  • IMac G5 (w/iSight) running slow and hot on web browsers

    Hello-
I've had my iMac for 4+ years and haven't any problems I couldn't fix on my own until now....
Machine is an iMac G5 w/ iSight with all original hardware except an extra 2GB of memory (for a total of 2.5). Over the last couple of months, my web browsers have begun to run slower and slower (mainly Safari, but I also use Firefox). Also the processor fan (I believe) comes on more quickly and frequently. It is now to the point that anytime there are any imbedded graphics, whether it's a youtube video, or a weather radar loop, or my kids are on webkinz, the fan kicks in and the top left corner gets extremely hot to the touch. As soon as I leave the page or close out the browser, the fan dies down. I cannot run any of these sites optimally. I am also getting quite a lot of page loading errors in Safari such as "Safari can't find the server." However, when I hit refresh the page comes right up. There does not seem to be a pattern to these messages. This only seems (so far) to be an issue with the browers. Today I simultaneously played a DVD, played songs on iTunes, and work in MS Word. No fan...
Here's what I've done so far:
    Repaired disk permissions
Ran the extended hardware test (passed, no errors)
Ran diagnostics on my network connection (passed)
Reset Safari and Firefox incl. clearing the cache and deleting all cookies
Ran cleaning and maintenance w/ OnyX
Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks...
    JD

Which Camino? Do you have the latest, which I think is 2.0.3? It's difficult to pinpoint why all your browsers might be slow to load.
You could try the Servers from OpenDNS which may be faster (and safer, since they are patched for DNS poisoning/redirects) than those of your ISP. Put these numbers in Network> DNS for the interface your are using, eg. Ethernet, Airport:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Then check to see if it's working by going to
    http://www.opendns.com/welcome/
You can also test your speeds here
    http://www.speedtest.net/
Here's something to read on slow browsers (in this case, Safari, but applicable to any browser.)
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10354948-263.html
If the refresh option works quickly, that might indicate that your Internet speed is slow. Once you've been to a page, it's stored in the browser cache, so it doesn't need to reload everything from scratch. I don't notice any difference in speed from refresh loading, so I suppose my Internet speed, though only around 1MBPS, is fast enough not to have to depend on the cache.
I don't know for certain if that indicates a problem, but the CPU spiking temporarily to 100% on loading a page doesn't sound like a big problem. Your processor is by now relatively slow compared to newer machines and web pages are getting more complicated with more elements to load all the time.
Finally, those G5s do run kind of hot; it will only delay the arrival of the hottest temps, but putting a fan at the back does help a little. I use one even on this new iMac.

  • Dbms_job - changing next date when run from itself

    Hi,
    <br><br>
Can you change the next date of a job from a procedure that is called by the job you are changing?<br><br>
I have a dbms_job that is scheduled to run on the first monday of the month. The job runs a procedure and this procedure needs to schedule the job at the end of it so that it is ready to run next month (1st monday).
    <br><br>
So my initial setup is something like
    <br>
    dbms_job.submit(101, '02-oct-2006', 'sysdate + 35')
    <br>
and this should run on the 2nd of October and then it will be scheduled to run next on the 6th of November (sysdate of date it ran + 35).
    <br>
I change the interval as part of the procedure as it would need to be sysdate + 28 to get the first monday in december<br><br>
I think this is all fine and as expected and should work.
    <br>
My problem is that the job can be run manually also so say on the 16th of October someone runs it. The next run date is now 16th oct + 35 and I recalculate the interval to be sysdate + 21 (to get to next months first monday) . This is wrong as what I want is next run to be 6th November with interval of 21 days. <br><br>
I have tried doing a next_date on the job but it always seems to use the interval and ignores the date I give it?? This is only when the job resets itself, as when I just call the procedure (ie not from the job) then next_date works and it gets the date I want??
    <br><br>
Hopefully this makes sense as it is not that easy to explain...
    <br><br>
Basically what I want to do is make sure the job is run on the first Monday of the next month (or this month if the job was run before the first monday of this month) regardless of when it was last run.
    <br><br>
    thanks

I have found a solution - simply use a function as the interval parameter and build all the logic you want into that :)

  • 17" iMac G5 2GHz (ALS but no iSight) runs hot and LOUD fans

    Hi all,
I love my iMac. I've had it for nearly 8 months now. From day 1, I've been surprised by how loud it is under any significant CPU load. Unfortunately for me, I have waited until I'm well out of my phone support window to do anything about it. I have not yet purchased AppleCare.
As I type this, my CPU temp is 70 degrees C and fan is running at 2600 RPM, running nothing beyond the browser in which I'm typing. Should I attempt to work in iMovie and render said work to DVD (the reason I bought the machine), CPU temp will climb to ~76 and fan speed jumps to 4600-4800 RPM. At this speed, the noise is unbearable...but it is annoying even when idle.
Can any of you with this model of 17" iMac comment on your experience? Do these numbers and this experience sound normal? I know I'm not alone in this complaint, but I can't tell how widespread the problem is or whether my machine is normal or defective. I've been told by my local service center (CompUSA) that every single 17" iMac of this revision runs hot and has loud fans, and that there is nothing I can do short of complaining to Apple in the hopes of getting a replacement of a later revision. I was told by a "genius" at a different Apple store that my machine sounded about like he'd expect.
I'm getting a system board replacement tomorrow, but have been told not to expect it to make a significant difference. I figure I must do it before Apple would consider further action.
Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long message...
    Thanks,
    ctcaldwell
    iMac G5 17" Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Mine is still fairly new as I picked it up off ebay a couple weeks ago brand new. So I don't know when it was actually manufactured. The part of the noise that gets under my skin is that soft but constant background whining coming from the CPU fan. It doesn't really sound like anything rubbing or a bad bearing, just the sound that an electric motor makes. But, it just seems to resonate from the lower left hand side where the air intake is.
So quite accidentally one day I held my hand under the left hand side and it completely muffled the whine sound. You could still here the hum and the sound of air but the irritating element was gone. Playing around a little more, I opted to tape a business card under that lower left hand corner, bridging the gap from front to back to still allow an airspace for the fan's suction. It knocks out about 90% of the whine.
It's been running that way for two weeks with no ill effects. Yes, the fan speeds up and slows down when needed. Normal at rest RPM is 1500 and mid to upper 50's on the temp. The highest temp I've seen under max continuous load is 65 with the fan at 4000 rpm.
I did experiment with something longer than the business card but I did then see a decrease in cooling capability. The isight models have their suction ducted out the back and I bet that gets rid of that resonance.
So all in all it still makes less fan noise than my old B&W, it's just that the B&W wasn't up on the desk so close to our heads. But, If your fans are constantly on high, there is a procedure for resetting something in power management, I just can't find it right now. Hope this helps.

  • Can a Keynote presentation be made so it runs by itself when converted to YouTube video for display on a website?

I would like to have it run scripted to the music & narration so it flows like a slideshow/movie from start to finish, about 10 - 15 minutes by itself with no need for the viewer to do anything. I plan on making it a YouTube video and it will be on a page on my client's website. I am trying to hack Keynote into a multimedia authoring tool like Adobe Director which is another tool I am thinking of using. Is anyone else using Keynote for multimedia authoring rather than just speaker slide support (PowerPoint)?

in Keynote:     Share > Send To > YouTube
Keynote is a very useful, basic level authoring application, it should not be compared to Director which is the industry leader in professional interactive authoring. You can learn the basics if Keynote in an hour, Director will take a few months.

  • Disk Cleanup in Windows 8.1 running by itself

    Hi,
I'm having a strange problem. If I let my PC idle for around 5 minutes, the disk cleanup utility pops up and analyzes my PC, then
leaves the window open showing what could be cleaned up, etc. However, if I move the mouse, the window vanishes.
I'm running Win 8.1, and I have two hard drives, a 250GB SSD and a 1.5TB HD. I just installed the 1.5TB drive today, so that might
have something to do with it, but to be honest, I don't recall if this problem started before or after I installed the 1.5GB drive.
This is happening every 5 minutes or so - makes it hard to enjoy a movie or anything that would leave the computer idle. I Googled
a lot and couldn't find anything. I've run disk cleanup by hand and let it do its thing for both drives, but it didn't help.
Any ideas? It's getting annoying. I can't even drag it off to the side of the screen because it vanishes the moment I move the mouse.
If I can't figure it out, I guess I can unplug the 1.5TB and see if that fixes it. Then I will at least know the culprit.

Thanks for the ideas. I did check the startup tab in the Task Manager, but it only had things I expected to be there. Nothing strange that would cause disk cleanup to start.
However, Roger Lu is on the same track I am on. It is related to a task in the Task Scheduler. There are four items in particular that seem to be linked to each other:
    Idle Maintenance
    Manual Maintenance
    Regular Maintenance
    Maintenance Configurator
I'm fairly sure it is Regular Maintenance that is causing the issue. I went in and told it to not stop the process if my system was idle, after that disk cleanup stopped disappearing when I moved my mouse or had any other kind of input.
I am still tinkering with the others, setting them to not stop the maintenance as well to double check and make sure that they aren't compounding the problem.
I just wish there was a list of what Regular Maintenance does, and a way to change it, as with the other maintenance tasks too. I feel as though these shouldn't be disabled because Windows set them in the first place.
Could you talk a look in your Task Scheduler, then double click on Maintenance Configurator  and tell me if you have the same four items as I do? Are any of them listed as running? Are they disabled or ready?
I'm just about ready to disable the one that is causing problems, and re-enable it once a month or so to let it do whatever it is it does.

  • Ipad 4th Gen Siri runs by itself and reboots by itself

Ok SO I have this wacky Ipad 4th gen that was stuck in reboot mode with low battery.
I got past that and restored the Ipad now the thing will start Siri all by itself without me touching the home button and some times for no reason it will just shut down and restart by itself.
It seems on occasion the Sleep/Wake button will not communicate with Ipad or possibly teh Home button is stuck or something ad I have found that SIri starts all by itself and I cannot back out of apps some times by using the home button.
Could it possibly be something going on with teh home button itself and how would I go about testing it and possibly fixing it? Are they connections that can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner? I have a couple different types that I use on my Peavey Amps and my Behringer Mixer so I know they are safe for plastics and switches, buttons , linier sliders etc..
I was in process of buying this from my neighbor then his wife wanted it back and it started erroring so she opened it and I am not sure if possibly it could of damaged a Ribbon or possibly teh memory cpu?
I cannot see anything obviously wrong with ribbons etc. Except the Digitizer cable did get bent and kinked a bit but it seems to work fine.

If the neighbor's wife opened the iPad up for any reason at all, I surely would not want to purchase it now. She may have done damage to it and I wouldn't take the chance.
If you don't want to shell out the cash for a new device, buy a refurb from Apple and get something reliable or some thing that at least has a warranty of some kind.
Leave the iPad and it's repairs for your neighbor and walk away.

  • Sysprep runs by itself in Audit Mode

I am cloning a HP desktop and when I put it into Audit Mode everything seems to work fine until you would normally see the sysprep utility with drop down menus, check boxes and the OK or Cancel buttons.  Instead the sysprep utility is already running
as if I had already selected OK.  Sometimes if I am quick enough I can hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up Task Manager and End the sysprep utility.  This happens every time it boots in Audit Mode.  I have removed the HP bloatware and now it runs
too quickly for me to stop it and boots to the OOBE screen and I have to press Ctrl-Shift-F3 and try it again.
Is there a better way to stop the sysprep utility from running automatically in Audit Mode?
Can anyone explain why this is happening?

    Hi,
There is a better way to stop this, you can select "shutdown" not "restart" item when you run the sysprep utility. Then you can manually start the computer. Or You can use Windows System Image Manager to create an answer file.

  • ISight hates my PowerBook.

Hi. I have a final revision 17" PowerBook and an external iSight. It hasn't worked on my computer for ages; when I upgraded to 10.4.8. The computer doesn't recognize it. The green light goes on for a second and it shuts off. Applications say that either a camera is not connected and it doesn't show up in system profiler.
Just yesterday, I finally got around to doing a full system erase and install. Completely wiped my HD and started from scratch. The iSight still doesn't work.
So of course you would think it would be hardware failure with the iSight itself, right? But on my mom's iMac G4, it works like brand new. The iMac is running 10.4.8, the same update that caused my PowerBook to stop recognizing the iSight. Used the same cable to test it too.
How can it be that the iSight doesn't work on my PowerBook with a completely clean install of OS X, with the iSight extension properly in place and everything, and with a fully working Firewire port? It makes no sense.
Any suggestions, or even guesses appreciated.
17" PowerBook G4 + Apple 30" Cinema Display   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   1.5 GB RAM, 100GB HD, Headphone jack stuck on optical out

    Hello Zweben
You have tried several good checks. Perhaps your 17" PowerBook has a bad Firewire port or connector? Here are some suggestions you can consider before contacting an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional help.
Check your System Preferences for "millions" of colors.
Have you checked to be sure you do not have any applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight running? (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.)
If you have an HP printer/scanner connected to your Mac, consider this post by parkersal.
You can try any relevant suggestions from How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional.
Be sure you disconnect your Cinema Display and all Firewire or AV peripherals while you do your testing to rule out possible conflicts. If you have installed third party software that uses AV or Firewire components, it might help to uninstall the software, too. Restart your PB and run the tests.
Don't omit the checks suggested in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight article. Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
If you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting, see the Mac OS X 10.4 Help article for Adding a new user account to your computer.
Do other Firewire devices work on your PB using the same port?
If the problem persists, and especially if you updated to 10.4.10 via your Mac's "Software Update..." feature, try the following method to apply the 10.4.10 Combo Updater:
    - Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    - Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help)
    - Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC).
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight audio again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying the latest Combo Updates.
If your iSight still does not show up as a Firewire device in your PB's System Profiler after trying these suggestions, you likely will need help from an Apple Service Technician.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • ISight randomly on: in Soviet Russia, MacBook watches you!

Bizarrely, my iSight camera turned itself on twice today. I'm not sure what the deal is here, and specifically whether I should be worried. Let me recap:
I booted up my MacBook at a café this afternoon to type something up. There wasn't a good wireless signal so I switched AirPort off. The only application I had open was MS Word. At some point, I realized that the green light next to the iSight was on. I don't ever use iSight (or even iChat), so it took me a while to realize that the camera must be on. I fumbled around trying to find some kind of control but the best I could come up with was Photobooth, which, when I launched it, just came up with a black window -- no camera feed, no spinny beach ball, just the black window. Couldn't figure it out, needed to get some work done, ignored it.
After about two hours, I shut down the computer and relocated, this time to somewhere with wireless so I turned AirPort back on. However, this time I noticed the green camera light go on during the startup, before the login box. Green light remained on through the next hour of checking email etc during which only Firefox was running. Shut it down again and came home. Since I got home (AirPort on, Word and Firefox running) the light has not come on at all. Well, except for ten minutes ago when I fired up Photobooth as an experiment; this time the light came on, I got camera feed in the box, and it all switched off when I quit the program.
Any ideas about why the camera might have been on this afternoon? Should I be concerned at all? Well, obviously I kind of am already, so anyone have any tips on how to switch the camera off if this happens again? Doesn't seem like a restart would help.
Thank you to anyone who can shed some light!
