Isr causes panic
Hello Folks -
I have a device driver running in Solaris 9 (sparc - multi cpu) which which seems to panic the system. This happens well after the ISR is registered; I don't think it is due to not having everything ready when I register the routine.
The crash analysis shows:
vpanic(3, 2a100265178, 2a1002653c0, 7efefeff, 81010100, ff00)
cpu_aflt_log+0x590(2a1002651cb, 1, 2a1002653d8, 10, 116c178, 116c1a0)
cpu_deferred_error+0x568(0, 1, 10080003200000, 100800, 7fe, 0)
ktl0+0x48(f2a7fc68, 0, a, 0, 0, 0)
0xff2cd4fc(3000d2a0000, b, 0, 3000cf46000, ff33d1b4, 3000cf46000)
mps_isr_high+4(3000d2a0000, 1, 0, 0, 0, 315)
The problem instruction is:
mps_isr_high+4: call -0x2ac <mps_clear_int>
OK, mps_clear_int() is my drivers routine as well, but what would cause the system to choke when calling it. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help,
mike
Hi everyone
Vodafone really have not excelled here but today tracked down a solution using the GlobeTrotter application to intall the right modem driver (not sure but I think this was the problem causing kernel panics)
Here is how to do it...
1. Make sure you delete any extension from the System/Library/Extensions folder containing the word "Huawei" in the file name
2. Restart
3. Download latest version of Vodafone Mobile Connect (which by itself will still cause kernel panic if you install and then plug dongle in and install.
4. Download latest version of GlobeTrotter Connect (http://support.option.com/att/index.php?title=GT%20Connect%20for%20Mac%2010.4.11 ,%2010.5.x%20and%2010.6.x%20and%20Manual&action=module20/index)
and install it.
If asked to confirm new network preferences do so - this I think installs the updated modem driver which I think was the source of the kernel panic previously.
5. Then insert USB modem - should not cause kernel panic!
6. Then run the Vodafone Mobile Connect software and press Activate
It works and does not crash!!
Good luck!

Vodaphone dongle causes panic crash. Help please?
It is essential for me to use a Vodaphone dongle for certain work purposes. After installing Snow Leopard, dongle caused panic crash in my MacBook Pro. 4 panic crashes and reports to Apple later ... alert message appears as follows.
" System/Library/Extensions/USBExpressCard can't wake_Huawei.kext"
Check out support and hit on Welcome Wake Up issues. More like Unwelcome! Is this the problem?
Have reinstalled Leopard since this dongle is the only way to connect at work.

Parental controls still causing panics
A while back there were a fair few posts re Parental Controls being the cause of regular kernel panics, but they seem to have died down now.
I'm still getting them - about 3 a week - is anyone else and if not, how did you solve it?
I thought it was going to get fixed in the last updates.
I would turn them off and use Intego software instead, but I can't get hold of them for a Leopard update. Anyone know if they are still in business? No harm in being cautious. In my experience, these particular kernel panics are only happening at log on/off so if that's the same for you, your risk of losing data is small. Assume you save and back up regularly?
As for potential damage to the system, I would ask for help from someone with more knowledge. I have not detected any other problems related to this so far - it's just been an inconvenience.
I have since switched off PC and installed Intego's Content Barrier instead, which only polices the internet use, but that suits our needs. So I can't tell if the security update has cured the problem. Maybe someone else can post? -
Belkin USB F5D7050 causes panic
I am working on a friend's G4 PowerMac with Leopard. I have been trying to set up a USB wireless adapter F5D7050. I downloaded the Ralink drivers, installed them, plugged in the adapter, found it in the Network prefs and activated it, but as soon as I try to access my router, I get total kernel panic followed by the grey curtain over the screen forcing a shutdown.
Now if I do a restart with the device plugged in, the mac panics on startup at the final windows as it is setting networking up.
Any ideas of things I can try? BTW, I set the same adapter up on my intel macbook with the same drivers and it worked fine (Snow Leopard).
Thanks; RickI have solved my issue, but in case anyone else has this problem...
The Belkin F5D7050 uses modified Ralink drivers. The Belkin drivers didn't work for me, nor did the Ralink ones form Ralink's site. I went on the Newer Technology site which also uses modified Ralink drivers according to their product description, but somehow they must be different, as they worked fine on the G4 with the Belkin F5D7050 and it now works.
Better yet, just buy the Newer Technology USB wireless adapter. I wish I had.

What is causing panics on Macbook Pro 4,1
Hello,
My Dad was having very frequent crashes on his Mabook Pro 4,1 runing Snow Leopard.
Below is one of the reports I was hoping someone could interpret.
His computer will not start anymore now. Can't even boot to single user mode.
Thinking it's a hardware problem. Does the report below show any signs of what the problem could be?
Thanks

It sounds like it needs a new logic board, which has the GPU soldered on it. Price-wise, it's not worth having Apple put a new LB in it, given its age. If you're handy inside a laptop, you might consider installing a used LB yourself if you can find one on eBay, etc. Not good news, I know.

My experience: having bootcamp volume mounted while in SL causes panics
I have a brand new MacPro quad-core, running 10.6.1.
Over the weekend I had many, many kernel panics - within 3-5 minutes of boot up (Apple: I had the mac report each one to you).
For a while I thought it had to do with folder permissions (I was saving files onto an older HD I put in from my old machine). So, after one reboot, I unmounted ALL drives excepting my boot drive, and did all my saving to it. No panic!! Great.
One by one I remounted the drives - and I had no problems until I mounted the BOOTCAMP drive. This was a 32 GB partition on my boot drive, created via Boot Camp Assistant. I'd reformatted it as NTFS and installed Windows 7 64-bit RC. As long as I PROMPTLY ejected the bootcamp drive as soon as I started up, it seemed that I was able to avoid a panic.
I've eliminated the BC partition for now, again with BC assistant - I don't need it THAT much...I meant to offer this theory: I speculate that the panics happened when Spotlight tried to index the NTFS partition.
I have 3 SATA drives in the MacPro, so presumably it took some time for those to be indexed. This might explain the LACK of panics for the first day or two after I got the machine.
I could be wrong, but it's a theory. -
Using 2 memory modules causes kernel panic
In early 2009 I upgraded my memory from 512 to 2 GB, 2 modules of 1GB each. This past January (just shy of 2 years later) I got a kernel panic. I tested running with a single module, and one module caused panic, the other was fine. Both slots function with the good module. So I got two new matched replacement chips from OWC, put them in and got kernel panics during the boot process. Yesterday I spent testing memory configurations and found this:
1. chip 1 alone runs fine and passes all Rember memory tests in slot 1.
2. chip 2 alone runs fine in slot 1 and 2, passes all memory tests in slot 2.
3. chips 1 and 2 together, in either slot, cause kernel panics before the OS is loaded.
Has anyone seen this problem? Will it go away if I use top of the line (Apple) memory chips?
When the kernel panics started back in January, an AppleCare advanced advisor said he had the same problem and he had to remove one module to stop the kernel panics. Running on 1GB doesn't work for me because I tend to max out the memory and programs like Mail, Safari, Photoshop, etc. become unreponsive all together.
thanks -I have spent more time on the phone with OWC about this than I care to remember. Their latest request is that I use an eraser to clean the metal contacts on the chips; if that fails, I get to send the chips back. Whether I get a refund or yet another set of replacement chips, I don't know. They are not experts on Apple machines, that is clear.

Mavericks causing kernel panics
hi after the update my imac started to do random reboots every few hours its driving me crazy. i have already did a reset of my NVRAM/PRAM and did a memtest and the apple hardware test with no errors

Thunderbolt Bus: iMac, Apple Inc., 25.1That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -

Failed to authorize right 'system.install.app-store-software' by client '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/VersiThanks for the input. I asked the question on another site, and the indication in the comments is that even the new beta version of Soundflower causes panics. I've uninstalled it for now.
-
During graphic intensive applications(gaming, netflix, etc), my macbook pro will randomly hard freeze(sometimes it's after a few minutes and other times several hours). I can't access any other applications during this, and I can't force quit using the shortcut. The only thing I can do is press the power button and turn it off. Somtimes I can move my mouse, and sometimes I can't. When I can, it is the colorful pinwheel.
I disabled automatic graphics switching, and that did not help. I then ran a hardware test, and it was hanging on the memory portion of the test. I took my mac to the apple store two weeks ago with this problem, and they thought it was a memory problem and replaced my memory (sidenote: I had taken my apple back for repairs in last October because of kernel panics. They replaced my hardrive, logicboard, and my memory, but they only put back in 4GB when I originally upgraded to 8GB). They upgraded my memory to the 8GB again with the replacement, and it seemed fine. I was using it without problems, but now my mac is having problems again.
Random freezes where I have to forcibly shut off my mac happen a couple times a day, and now I'm starting to get kernel panics. The kernel panics both involved the NVDAResman and Geforce in the extension backtrace. (I've had two kernel panics the past two days). It's also a lot slower starting up, and sometimes it freezes during the startup with the mac icon and the gray backdrop or the login screen forcing me to restart.
I ran the hardware test again out of curiosity, and it's still hanging at the memory portion of the test. I'm a little at a loss as to what to do.
My latest panic report:

A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
Ok so my MacBook Pro shuts itself down and restarts at least 4 times a day. Usually this happens when im away from my computer and its been idle or sleeping or whatever it does, however just 30 minutes ago this happened while i was using it and then it wouldnt restart it just kept showing the loading "apple" logo with loading bars comntinuously spinning... I had to shut it down manually and then it took an extra long time to load before finally loading to the user login page. Now generally... upon start up after this "panic" i will recieve a"Panic report" that says something aloong the lines of...

What the HECK is happening and whats causing this???? How do i fix it?That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual.
Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault.
Kernel Panic - Don't Know What From
I just experienced a very frustrating kernel panic, while I had a bunch of unsaved work open.
I'm using Apple's current top-of-the-line MacBook Pro (15" retina display, 2.6 GHz), running OS X 10.9.2.
My work involved MS Excel and Powerpoint, as well as heavy Preview use. I think the other apps I had open at the time included Word, iTunes, Mail, Firefox, 1Password, and maybe Messages.
3rd party background software that I have running: Caffeine (wasn't activated at the time), Dropbox, Temperature Gauge Pro, and some Canon software for my all-in-one machine.
I've used Caffeine on my old 2009 17" MBP, as well as on this one since December, and it's never caused me any grief.
Dropbox is so ubiquitous that if it was causing people kernel panics, I'd expect to have heard about it by now, or that there'd been a software update to address it.
Temperature Gauge Pro is the least known of the 3 to me, but having said that, I've been running it for at least a couple of months now (same version all along), and it's never caused a problem.
Canon software hasn't caused me any issues over past several months that I've known about.
I've included the panic report, below. I'd be thankful for anyone's experienced opinion of what it says. (I Googled the "panic(cpu 7 caller 0xffffff80192a4f5a)" bit and got no hits, and then I searched for Preview causing panics, and didn't see much there either.)
Thanks!!!

Looking for some advice dealing with Kernel Panics
Hi there! I'm looking for some help regarding constant kernel panics I've been getting on my machine. It has been happening pretty regularly for the last month or so, occuring sometimes three times in one day and other times none. I've been looking to see what might cause the issue and have thus far come up emptyhanded. I can't think of anything I've modified recently that would be causing the issue. I performed a hardware test using AHT and no errors were found. I've included both the most recent report from the panic as well as the EtreCheck report. Any and all advice is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.
Possible other causes are the software that installed these:
com.splashtop.driver.SRXFrameBufferConnector 1.5
com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.7
com.splashtop.driver.SRXDisplayCard 1.5
com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.7
Now they may be causing panics because the try to use acceleration in the GPU which leads to the panics. You are unlucky to have a particular model that has a real problem with this. -
Help! Kernel panic when I empty my trash.
I have 500GB disk. Unknowingly, I have filled it up. Now I only have 12GB left. I tried to clean up by removing some of my old iMovieProject file. I deleted a 20GB file and now the computer just panic when I try to empty the trash. It asks me to reset the computer. When it comes up again, it asks if I want to report the crash to Apple. Then at the top of the panic report I read something that says "Transaction too big".
I guess I cannot delete a 20GB file when I only have 12 GB free space.
In MS Windows, I can do SHIFT-DELETE to remove a file without going thru the trash can. Can I do the same in Mac OS.
I need disk space, but emptying trash causes panic. Help! I am in a deadlock situation. The problem is that I misplaced my Installation CD.
Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup. Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found: ** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message: *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *** Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
Is there a way to make my external drive to be the startup disk temporarily while I repair the internal disk?
Is it Firewire or USB? -

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.4That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test, if applicable.
