Issue with amount of Hard Disk allocated to User

I have recently come across an unexpected issue that I have managed to work around but not in a way that is particularly satisfactory.
Using iMovie I was alarmed to see that on uploading about an hour of video that I was rapidly running out of hard disk space. This was odd as I had previously simply used Migration Assistant to migrate from my old iMac with a 30Gb drive to a new iMac with a 500Gb drive and as far as I could see my tape was using a maximum of 13Gb. ie I should have about 400Gb as a minimum available on my Hard Drive. Thinking it must be a glitch that iMovie was incorrectly reading the amount of space available i continued with what I was doing only for the whole thing to stop due to lack of available space.
Having checked my hard drive I realised that I did have the space however my user account (File Vaulted Protected) only has 10Gb allocated to it. By moving the file out of my user account to the general drive (through copying first and then deleting the original) I was able to continue the project as well as regain disk space in my user account.
It would appear that in using file vault I have in effect partitioned my disk which was not what I had anticipated; I am now in the dubious position of having to work on very large files outside of security provided by File Vault.
Have I got this right and if so is there someway that I can allocate more space to my user account? (I am the only one using the iMac and so having the whole HD available to my user account would be ideal).
Thanks in advance for any help.

VK I tried the solution you suggested but it would not allow me to turn off File Vault. The message I got was that I had insufficient hard disk space to turn off File Vault (It states that I need 76Gb of space but at the moment I have less than 6Gb available - this is in spite of the fact I have 350Gb available overall on my Hard Drive.
I suspect the only way I am going to solve this is through radical measures, however if anyone else has come across this before and solved it your input would be appreciated.

After the latest apple IOS upgrade my 3 apple products, an imac, a macbook air and a macbook, lost their contact with their external hard disks. They were LaCie make. And every time I turn my laptops, I find the positions of the keys on their  keyboards changed.  Why is Apple silent? There are so many people complaining about this issue and expecting Apple to correct this issue that they have created.

Probably because it's not an Apple issue. I have Lacie EHD's connected to my MBAir and iMac, all work perfectly on Mavericks. In addition I don't have any keyboard issues on any of my Apple products. BTW IOS is only for IOS devices such as iPads, iPods and iPhones, Macs use OS X. The two OS's are seperate  products designed to run on seperate products.

  • Time Machine backup created on Mac with a large hard disk. What happens when restore to MacBook Air with small SSD drive?

What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?

It is not the HD size, but rather the size of the data it contains. If you right-click your 500GB drive and select "Get Info" you can see how much is actually being used.
Naturally if you are using more space than the new drive has, then you have to make some choices about what you want to keep and what you want to keep archived.
I don't know what options are available but you may simply have to do a manual restore of files you want, in groups.

  • About the amount of hard disk memory used during Testdrive installation

    Dear all,
I have a question about installing SAP Netweaver Testdrive on Redhat Linux Enterprise 5.3. Currently I have a virtual machine (sun virtualbox) where Windows Vista is host and the guest operating system is RHLE 5.3 (32 bit). For doing several tests I would like to install the Testdrive on this linux system. Yet, the total available virtual hard disk memory is about 15 GB and I have already used more than 6GB.
Is there any way to specify the amount of hard disk memory used by Netweaver once it installs DB2 on the system? Because as it seems to me it takes more than 15 GB just for the database. But I'm not sure whether the whole space is really needed, particularly in my case where the aim of use is just for ABAP development and tests (for self-training).
    Thanks in advance,
    Kind Regards,

    Hi,
You can refer the specific installation guide for the minimum disk space requirement.
Whatever functionality you use you need minimum space as mentioned in the installation guide.
You can configure slightly more memory than given in the installation guide to be safer.

You should have bought one with a larger SSD. You can regain some space by disabling the sleepimage file:
To disable safe sleep, run the two following commands in Terminal:
    $ sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    $ sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false
When done, restart your computer. Now go delete the file "/private/var/vm/sleepimage" to free up some hard drive space. When you put your computer to sleep it, should happen in under five seconds; my MacBook now goes to sleep in two seconds.
[robg adds: To state the obvious, with safe sleep disabled, a total power loss will wipe out whatever was open on your machine. To enable safe sleep mode again, repeat the above commands, but change hibernatemode 0 on the first line to hibernatemode 3, and =false to =true on the second line. You'll then need to reboot again. Personally, I prefer the safe sleep mode, even with the slower sleep time and hard drive consumption -- even if for no other reason than it's great when changing batteries on a flight.]

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

  • Having issues with profile manager on 10.9 loosing users/device assignments.

I'm having issues with profile manager on 10.9 loosing users/device assignments. Luckly I only have arround 70 devices added so far. The first time it happened I thought it was just a freak thing, but it has just happened again. What I find weird is nothing on the server was changed, no devices added. So when this happens my users phones lose access to email, because I'm using variables, which rely on the user being assigned to the device. Anyone know how to fix this, and if not. Does anyone know how to backup and restore just profile manager in 10.9. Thanks.

I enabled all users in my AD "Domain Users" group access to "Profile Manager". I had also initially enabled "Profile Manager" access for a few individual users. Those users did not loss the device assignments. I'm not absolutely sure why/if allowing access for a group is causing this issue. Enabling access for each person would be very time consuming.... Maybe adding access to the individual users is importing that user into OD?

  • Syncing issues with an external hard drive

Hello, having a syncing issue with my iTunes right now. I have my library set up on an external hard drive because there isn't anymore space on my computer for my music, and the other day my roommate unplugged the external to ironically sync my ipod. There was a syncing issue of course but it's happened before so I wasn't worried, but now iTunes can't find a few hundred songs in my library still. I've restarted iTunes and replugged in my hard drive multiple times and restarted my computer and consolidated my library as well but nothing's working. All my music is still on my external but iTunes can't read some of the songs for some reason. Any suggestions at this point? I'm lost. Thanks.

    Welcome to AD!
What drive letter did the exHD use before this happened? Do you know?
Windows can change hard drive letters for USB devices without telling you.
Use Windows Disk Management to change the drive letter back to what it was before your roomie created this havoc. Then start itunes, and tell your roomie it's their turn to I dunno, clean the toilet, or something useful.

  • Having issues with my external hard drive on 6th gen Airport Extreme

I recently upgraded from a 5th gen to a 6th gen AEBS.  I'm having several issues with it and my 10.8.4 Macs.
When I try to mount the self-powered external drive, which appeared to work well with the 5th gen, the disk will often become unreachable.  Then if I open Airport Utility, it will say that it cannot find the router.
The only way to bring the router back to life is to turn off the drive and unplug it.
I have 7.7.1 on the AEBS as I upgraded to that right away via my phone, but now I cannot seem to downgrade back to 7.7.  The only reason I want to try this is because 7.7.1 was supposed to *fix* external drive issues, and maybe it made it worse for me (as I never actually tried 7.7)
    Any ideas?

I don't have any experience with hard drives attached, but I can say that I had a different problem with the 7.7.1 firmware update on a brand new Airport Extreme, and was told by Apple tech support that there was no way to download 7.7 to downgrade.  My only option was the return the Airport and exchange it for a new one.

  • Issues with freezing and now, Disk Warrior.

My Mac keeps freezing (with the pinwheel).  I went to run Disk Warrior to see if that helped, and it told me to delete a file that didn't exsist (com.Alsoft.diskwarrior.prefs... or something like that).  I am at the end of my rope.  Please help.

OK thanks. With the exception of the Disk Warrior dialog, everything looks completely normal.
I recommend doing as it says - find Disk Warrior prefs and drag it to the trash. Most likely you will find it in your user's Library folder. To find it navigate to your Macintosh HD, open the Library folder, and open the Preferences folder. Find the suspect file and drag it out of there.
Yours will not look exactly like the following but you shoud be able to figure it out:
You should also find a way to get rid of Disk Warrior. It is not helping and may be hurting.
Troubleshooting this problem will also be hindered by not having an original system install DVD. Without it you will not be able to run Apple Hardware Test, you will not be able to repair your hard disk using Disk Utility, and you will you be able to reinstall the OS, which is one of the suggested remedies in the link I posted earlier. I recommend you buy a replacement disk from Apple if for no other reason than to be able to reinstall an unadulterated version of Snow Leopard. It is only $30.

Read about what Safe Mode does before doing it - particularly, it will take longer to boot and some things simply won't work normally. However, if running in safe mode stops the freezes it will be a clue we can work with.

  • Rebuilding a T42 with a new hard disk

    Hi folks, 1st post!
I have a T42 (Type 2373-WAS) that I bought from an asset management company a couple of years ago.  The original 40GB hard drive is dying so I have bought a larger one to replace it.
When I bought the machine it didn't come with any build CDs, but had the IBM Access stuff on it with a separate partition for restoring - obviously this isn't on the new hard disk.
What I would like is to have the same structure on the new hard disk - with all the IBM recovery stuff and the extra partition.  Is this possible?  If so, how?
I suspect what I will have to do is reinstall XP Pro from my other CD, use the serial from the Windows sticker on the bottom of the laptop (hopefully that will work), and download the hundreds of drivers from the lenovo website?  I don't really relish doing this, especially as I have read several accounts of people having issues with the wireless card driver...
What's the best solution to this?
Also - how can I find out *exactly* what the spec of my machine (2373-WAS) is?
    Thanks in advance!

If you want the recovery partition you would need the Recovery discs, which you can try to purchase through ebay or marketplace on forum.thinkpads.com (you should post a Want to Buy listing the item that you are interested in purchasing).
If that don't work then, you would need to install the aftermarket OS and install the drivers separately.
Your machine spec and all the relevant drivers can be found in the link below.

  • Issues with Portable External Hard Drive (500GB)

I recently purchased the 500GB Toshiba-branded external hard drive in blue from my local Wal-Mart. It has been working fine for the past few months, but when I plugged it into my computer this morning, it didn't light up the LED and I couldn't feel the disk drive spinning as normal.
I tried to call Toshiba support, but all they did was ask me if the cord was damaged (it's not, at least not in any obvious fashion), and then tell me that it's the drive itself and to start a warranty claim. When I asked about all the data I already have on there (all of my family pictures and my music collection), they basically said tough noogies, they can't do anything about it.
I am going to try and plug it in at home and see if it's just this computer, but it's worked fine on this computer dozens of times. Does anyone have any advice on where to find a cord that would work, or other possible solutions? I absolutely CAN'T lose the data that's on here.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

    Hi
I too have an issue with my portable 500gb Toshiba hard drive. No LED lit up when plugged into the USB port (Ive tried them all). I have lots of data on there that I recently wanted backing up and uploaded from my laptop whilst that was being repaired. I too believe it may be the connector because it now seems a littel bit loose. Im no technogeek so can someone please advise how I remove the drive from the portable device and where I can get another case from...or even just retrieve the data and then get rid?

i did some googling and found out this may be due to damaged areas in the hard disk or the hard disk is about to fail. (is it true?)
I followed some other thread, used system rescue cd and did a fsck -f on the root partition. I still keep getting these randon freezes. is there anything i can do to fix these?
    your help is appreciated.

I used the 80 wire cable that came with the board and ran the WD's jumperless (cable select) with the drive at one end and the blue connector on the MB.  I also tried a 40 wire cable with the drive set to master.  Both of these scenarios worked fine on my other computer, which I switched back and forth several times to prove to myself that the drives were fine and the cables were ok.
I did run spinrite from dos and was always able to work with the drives as long as I selected LBA access and disabled [Integrated Peripherals]->[VIA OnChip IDE Device]->[IDE DMA Transfer Access].
The MB never autodetected any of the drives correctly.  Only when I used the the older WD 1200JB with access mode set to [LBA] and disabled IDE DMA Transfer Access did i get partial success.  Admittedly, this is a very obscure problem and not many others are hitting. Hopefully the service guys will be able to sort it out since it is easy to reproduce.
I never used that JPWR2 connector, the manual stated that it was to supply power to the graphics card but my card has a regular 4 pin molex that i could get directly from the power supply.  Wonder if the board would blow up if someone stuck the 4pin lead from their PSU in there ... maybe not such a great feature.
I did not try a single CPU or run memtest86 - things I probably should have tried.  The problem to me seemed to be the integrated IDE controller was just not working correctly, so after changing ram, power supply, drives etc and seeing the exact same problem with the hard disk, I became more convinced it was just a flakey board.  Plus the need to clear CMOS and reboot constantly to get the board to post added to theory.
Oh well, it is in RMA land now, so when it comes back I will let you know how it goes.

  • Sent a brand new U500-ST6322 to Depot but returned with same problem + hard disk re-imaging

I bought this Satellite about 4 months ago and noticed the fan was very noisy (posted a msg on this forum about it).  I called Toshiba Technical Support who said this computer had been having fan issues so they asked me to send it to the Depot, which I did.  The depot worked on it and returned it with the following note:
"Replaced fan.Hard drive failed test with multiple bad sectors. Replaced defective hard drive. Re-imaged with default software. Set DMI/Updated Bios/Set BOOT defaults. Blew out heatsink/fan and unit. Unit was tested and passed all tests".
So obviously the guys worked on it, only the noise is still the same.  The computer basically makes one think there is a vacuum cleaner working not too far in the background.  So I am not really sure if Toshiba and I thought there was the same thing wrong with the fan.  And I'm not sure what to do next.  The fan noise is really distracting and you'd think a brand new machine would be a little quieter.  My 6-yr old Dell is quieter.
About the HD re-imaging... I had backed-up my stuff before I sent it to the Depot, so that turned out to have been useful.  When they say they re-imaged the HD, does it mean they re-formatted it in some way but kept the same unit?  Would there be a way for me to get the stuff from my "old" HD back?  There're no important documents, but just thinking about all the programs I need to install again makes me wonder if I could somehow recover the old hard drive.  Also, I see a lot of posts with people having sent their computers in and having had the same thing done.  Is it normal for a relatively new computer to have issues with the HD?  By the way, when I worked with the computer I had no HD issues, at least nothing I could tell.
    Thanks for any advice!

from what you put that they did to your machine they replaced the hdd and used the recovery media to reimage the drive back to factory. hdd and other hardware failures either happen very early or very late in their lives. so it is not uncommon to have a hdd that fails right out of the gate but it is much more common for them to fail later. as for getting your old hdd back i wouldnt count on it. it has probably already been sent away to be recycled.
you may not have had any problems at all with the hdd but from what you wrote that toshiba said it had multiple bad sectors. if these bad sectors are too big they will just replace it since those parts of the disc cant be used.
