Issues with the date in graph on first instance

Hi,
I have a date pick field (P2_START_DT) that has a default value set from a table
here is the code that I've used to set default value (thanks again to the expert for assistance)
begin
select max(REC_DATE) dt into  :P2_START_DT
from TABLE_A;
return :P2_START_DT;
end;
on the same page, I have a report (Type: SQL Query) and a graph that takes P2_DATE as a parameter
here is a sample SQL condition from Report
where
  RECORD_DATE > :P2_START_DT
Here is a samlpe SQL condition used for graphs
where
  RECORD_DATE > :P2_START_DT
condition is pretty much the same for both
my issue is that when page is loaded for the first time, P2_DATE field and the report shows right data but my graph doesn't show anything.
to test, I added a button to submit page.
when I click on the button both my graph and the report shows the right data... suggesting that for some reason graph is not picking up default value of P2_START_DT when the page is first loaded
please advise.
