ITunes 7.3.1 (Mac): Some tunes no longer play (played fine under 7.2)

I have a few tunes (about 50 out of several thousand) that iTunes 7.3.1 will not play. The majority of these are things that I ripped from my own tapes or CDs. So none of them are copy-protected. They appear as normal in iTunes play lists, but will not play. When I try to sync my iPod, iTunes complains that the format is unrecognized. The tunes play perfectly well in the Finder or the Quicktime player. Some are .mp3 and most are .m4a.
I encountered this with iTunes 7.3, and eventually reverted to 7.2, recovering my library from a backup volume. I thought "surely they fixed this with the 7.3.1 release", but I was wrong.
While I've seen many complaints about 7.3.1, I haven't seen this one. Any ideas, anyone?

I figured out one more thing. All of the files that failed to play back were mp3 files which I had generated from AIFFs using QT pro a few years ago. So although the mp3's were generated by Apple software, it wasn't by means of iTunes.
I 'solved' this by using the Advanced menu and transcoding the files to AAC. Strangely enough, the iTunes encoder could handle this fine, although iTunes itself wouldn't play them back.
The paucity of responses to this question would indicate that it's a situation that doesn't come up a lot. Still it's a failure by Apple. They're normally pretty tidy about stuff like this.

I downloaded an HD movie onto my laptop from i-tunes.  It plays fine on my laptop, but when I plug in my HD projector, the movie quits.  When I unplug the projector, the movie starts again. I have never had a problem with projecting an itunes movie before this. Someone told me that i-tunes changed something so that movies can no longer be projected.  We have a home theatre and have watched movies this way quite regularly, so it would be a drag if Apple will prevent us from doing this in the future.

I don’t know about projection, but I’m unable to watch HD content in iTunes because my Apple 30-inch Cinema Display is not HDCP-compliant (which is part of an HD copy-protection scheme).
The other movies you’ve projected, were they HD as well? If not, it could be the same problem: your projector is not HDCP-compliant.

Where soes someone go to get offical help wth Apple iTunes?
You would call Apple Support, for which you would probably be charged for the support.
Note that just because those CDs work with your old computer doesn't mean that it's still not an issue with those CDs and the burner in your newer system. Some CD brands just don't work well with some optical drives. If you haven't tried a different brand, and if you're using CD-RW trying CD-R, I would suggest you give that a try just to eliminate that possibility.

  • Upgraded to ITunes 6.0.1 and now it no longer plays music on my G4 Cube

Does anyone know the solution to uninstall ITunes and do a completely new install instead of upgrade? Like a fool, I let my ITunes be upgraded automatically to 6.0.1 on my G4 Cube running OS X 10.4.3 and now none of my music will play in ITunes. ITunes will open up, but I can no longer play any music in it. It just sits there ....... and does nothing, even though the program acts like it is playing a song. The pause and play look like they are working, but the song does nothing and the elapsed time remains the same, whether it is on pause or play.
I have tried deleting the ITunes.app and re-installing, but this does not fix the problem.

Found out the solution to my own problem by accident. My USB speakers came unplugged from my G4 Cube, unknown to me, and since Apple's software is so sophisticated, it realized that and would not play any of my music in iTunes. Upon plugging the speaker system back in, it works as usual.
I would have assumed that iTunes would have worked like normal, whether speakers were plugged in or not, you just would not hear any sound. But Apple thinks of everything, so that is why if there are no speakers hooked up to your computer, it does not attempt to play any music in iTunes.

  • Some tunes don't play in airport express

A few of the tunes in my play list show a little display icon. Although most of of the tunes play just fine through my airport express, the ones with the display icon switch back to my computer for sound????

    Leslie-
Your script is super-helpful and it was nice to know
there was a reason for the strange behavior of my
airtunes. I had a few files that I altered with your
app, but itunes doesn't seem to recognize that they
are now mp3s. does this maybe have something to do
with a change in itunes 6?
There doesn't seem to be any change with iTunes 6 that I can tell. I can only think of two things: one, that perhaps they aren't really MP3 files anyway. Changing them with my AppleScript only changes how iTunes sees them, not what kind of files they actually are. Remember also that you have to force iTunes to access the file from disk before the changes show up in the iTunes browser. This means you either need to play each changed song for a short time or you need to use "Get Info" on the file from iTunes so it reads the tag info from the song file. Either one of those should force iTunes to refresh the browser window's display.
If that doesn't work, try this script and post back with the results from one of the offending files:
    on open fileList
     repeat with theItem in fileList
      tell application "Finder"
set theName to the name of theItem
set theCreator to creator type of theItem
set theType to file type of theItem
       display dialog "File: " & theName & return & "Creator: " & theCreator & return & "Type: " & theType
      end tell
     end repeat
end openThe display dialog line, by the way, should all be on one line, though the discussions might wrapt it. theType should be the last thing on that line.

  • Some movies no longer play in iTunes

I rip a lot of my DVDs/BR's and put them onto my external drive to play in iTunes and on my Apple TV. I noticed that some of my HD movies will play on my Apple TV, but they won't play in iTunes. I can skip to various scenes and iTunes just stays on that frame - it doesn't play. Oddly, Quicktime X and and other media player will play the movie. I had no issues in ML, this just happened after upgrading to Mavericks.
    Any ideas?

It seems to be a perian problem.
Modified it like said on this post (for other reasons) : https://code.google.com/p/subler/issues/detail?id=404#c12

Hope it does for you too.

  • HT1209 Some songs no longer play on iphone, but are fine in itunes library... Help!

Songs i purchased from itunes months ago play fine on my computer in itunes, but are no longer playing on my iphone. they appear in the playlist, but won't play. i took all the music off my phone and synced all over again, and they still won't play. I don't know why only about a dozen songs are affected. they were purchased at different times since last summer.  I recently experienced the "lost contacts" issue and had to restore my phone from backup. could that have something to do with this?

Are these songs purchased from the iTunes store, or from your own cds?
    Been through these?

  • Just updated itunes on a new mac - doesn't want to play mp3s?

Hi everyone, I just picked up a newish g4 tower and am having trouble with itunes.
the os is 10.4.11 and I did the itunes update.
I tried to download a couple songs but mp3's won't register in the library window. I downloaded 2 m4a files and they both play.
does itunes no longer play mp3's?
Or are all the files I download trash? I'm using limewire and have never had this problem with the old itunes. should I switch to a different fileshare service?
I'm afraid to try to transfer my mp3 library from my old g4!
much thanks to anyone with advice! -CM

  • Some podcasts no longer play on my iPhone

    Folks,
I have an iPhone 4 and have been listening to podcasts via iTunes for years. As of a recent iTunes update (forget which version, some time around Nov 5, 2011), many of my podcasts will not play. They download and can play from iTunes on my Mac, but not on my iPhone. They are greyed-out on my iPhone. Here are ones that play and those that don't play:
    DO NOT PLAY:
    NPR Car Talk
    Rod's Pulse Podcast (my own)
    This Week in Google
    This Week in Tech
    *** with Marc maron
    DO PLAY:
    On the Media
    Buzz Out Loud
    What's going on. Any ideas?
    -Rod

Greyed out probably means corrupted during transfer. In my case I tried unchecking podcasts, syncing to erase them, rechecking podcasts and syncing, and then different podcasts were greyed. However, after powering off / on the iphone and re-syncing, they now are normal.
A radio-geek friend of mine claims it's all caused by sunspot activity and the reboot fixes the corrupted program that was causing the problem. I guess sunspot activity varies with your location on the planet .. maybe that's why only a small number of us have this problem.
In the future, reboot and ask questions later ...

  • I have songs in my iTunes library that I burned from CD's. They play in iTunes and will sync with my iPad. They play fine on the iPad.  However, the songs will not sync to my iPhone 4S.  There are now exclamation points next to songs (can't find source).

I burned cd's in iTunes. The songs were able to sync and play on my iPad. After this, exclamation points appeared in iTunes on my laptop (unable to find source).  They still play in iTunes but will not sync with my iPhone 4S.  Do some cd's have a limit on the number of times you can copy them or is this an iTunes problem.

KiwiLouisa - I had the same problem.  I was eventually able to distribute my content that was "Not eligible for iCloud" to my iPhone by switching off ITunes Match in both the ITunes app/machine that hosts my library (my Macbook Pro, in this case) as well as on the device to which I wished to distribute my content (my iPhone 6+).  This opened up the option for my device iTunes Music settings for selecting "Entire Music Library".
After I successfully transferred *ALL* my music and music videos via iTunes sync, I then again switched on ITunes Match in iTunes on my Macbook and on my iPhone.
This does not change the iCloud status, but at least I have the content on my iPhone.

  • Some mp3s no longer play in itunes 6

ok this one has me stumped. upgaded my itunes and now some of my music wont play (when it did before).
first thing i noticed is that some music icons were changed to quicktime. these would not play even when changing back to itunes (by selecting "open with" in the info box).
even opening with quicktime gives me this error: QuickTime cannot open the file: "zzzzzzz.MP3"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)
on closed inspection, i see that the "more info" box is missing some of the itunes information previously there, and there is no preview option.
i'm tried copying the file and renaming, which did not seem to help.
i'm clueless as to what's going on! anyone have any ideas?
    R

    Rebecca,
Install and open File Examiner. In FEX open a known healthy .mp3. Select the Type/Creator from the pull down and note the codes. Close the file without changing. Open your corrupt file and change the Type/Creator to match. Close and save changes. Your .mp3 should now open properly in iTunes.
Note: If the broken file is an AAC, substitute AAC for the mp3 above!
    Good luck,
    Dean

  • Itunes 11.0.2.26 sees tunes no longer on my iphone

    Hi,
I successfully loaded a .wav file onto my iPhone 4 through iTunes 11.0.2.26.
I successfully loaded an AAC version of the same file onto my iPhone 4 through iTunes 11.0.2.26.
I deleted both of the files from my iPhone by using the "swipe to the right" motion.
My problem is that I would like to reattempt the same loading excercize I did in the first sentence in this message.
But I get the itunes prompt saying "itunes cannot add any songs to the iphone 'iphone' because the songs already exist on your iPhone."
    They don't.
Now I have obliterated the song from iTunes library -restarted iTunes 11.0.2.26- and
when viewing my "On this IPhone" contents through the iTunes interface- they still appear!
I have even powered down the iPhone and restarted it.
I still see the same songs.
Also and finally- deleting them from the menu bar under 'Edit' will not highlight the 'delete' option.
...even when the bogus song titles are highlighted in the list with my other legitimate songs.
I simply couldn't find the right English to word this problem and I still don't know where Apple wants me in this forum.
    -Either in iPhone or iTunes?
    -User

    I uninstalled then reinstalled.
Even used "everything search" -a free tiny program- to positively ID all ".itl" files from my PC
    and subsequently deleted.
New install shows same bogus songs anyway.
I've spent too much time with Apple.
    Farewell forever.

  • Some audio files no longer playing?

I am half way through an imovie project and recently added audio commentry, however some files no longer play also a few now have a yellow warning triangle?
Im assuming the files are now corrupt or something?
really annoying!, anyone have an idea what the problem is??
    Cheers

    Hi
I'm assuming the files are now corrupt or something?
    I don't
Yellow triangle - indicates that the pointer in iMovie to the Audio file used, no longer is valid.
iMovie - DO NOT Copy the audio You put into Your movie project's at all - only points to where You found it.
E.g. - You insert an Audio-CD and use a tune from this in Your movie - then you need a tune from another CD and Ejects the first one =====>  RESULTING IN A YELLOW Triangle - pointer to the tune on Your Audio-CD is broken up on You ejected the CD.
I copy all needed Audio to a dedicated folder first (as I store in a proper place e.g. movie folder in User account) - then I use them into my movie.
The deeper thing is - That there is NO movie in Your Movie Project at all - only a small text document pointing to the material used (video, photos, texts and audio) AND how You want it to be presented AS a Movie.
Only when Shared / Finalized - there is an actual movie created.
This is Non-Destructive non linear Video Editing and how it works.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Itunes will no longer play any film?

I have recently reinstalled and authorized Itunes on my computer but i can no longer play any films which i have previoulsy paid for and downloaded?
    any ideas?
    Thank you,
    james

You get this message because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
Do any of these aply to you?
