(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you are running 64-bit Windows and the above steps haven't helped try installing the version of iTunes that can be downloaded from this support document. iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
If you still have no luck try reinstalling iTunes 12.0, links in the user tip.

    Akeenleyside,
Are you removing your Apple software in an attempt to update to iTunes 10.5?  I ask this because I am getting the same message when trying to install iTunes 10.5.

  • Trying to update iTunes, get error message "The older version of Bonjour cannot be removed" How do I remove it?

Trying to update iTunes on Windows XP, get error message "The older version of Bonjour cannot be removed." I have removed several copies of the file Bonjour in a couple of different folders but the error message persists. What am I missing??

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • The older version of bonjour cannot be removed- help

I can't update ITunes because of this issue.  I know that this has been an ongoing issue for XP users for several years.  Ive tried all suggestions without success. Bonjour doesn't show up in file search or task manager.  I downloaded the windows clean up utility and bonjour doesn't show up in the list of programs shown with that either.  I'd appreciate any other suggestions.

Launch CleanUp again. Have a look at the top of the list of programs.
Do you see any entries in there that:
    (a) Lack a program name but have an (All Users) followed by a version number in square brackets? If so, what is the version number?
    (b) Lack a program number and a version number, and just have (All Users)?
    (c) Lack everything ... it's just a blank line?

I installed iTunes on my FRESH copy of Win7. Restarted my computer and iTunes went missing. Apparently Bonjour and Quicktime still exist though. I tried reinstalling iTunes got the above error. I managed to remove the entire Program Files\Bonjour folder and it still gives me the error. Removed all Apple folders, Quicktime etc and I STILL get the error!

  • Message: the older version of bonjour cannot be removed

Hi, I tried to upgrade my iTunes yesterday and the message popped up when I tried to install it. I've tried several solutions (including http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2505467&tstart=330) and am still having trouble.
When I use Windows Installer Clean Up, no blank lines pop up with (all users) without a program name. However, Bonjour does show up. Can I delete that and hope it works?
    Please help!

excellent news, soph, and good job on your part ... doing your reearch and then doublechecking with someone that you were interpreting things right seems precisely the way to go about doing things like this. Good information about what you'd read and what you were considering doing, too. It made it very easy to answer you.
