Itunes crashes with audio CDs

Recently, I've had very frequent problems with iTunes crashing when playing commercial audio CDs. The crash usually happens at one of the following times
- When a CD is inserted (if it's a new CD, the crash happens after iTunes has retrieved data from CDDB, but before the CD appears in iTunes).
- When starting to play a CD.
- When a CD has finished playing.
- When ejecting a CD.
Sometimes it also crashes in the middle of playing a CD, but the crash usually happens at one of the points listed above.
The crashes started about a month ago, after I updated to iTunes 8.2. I tried reverting to iTunes 8.1.1, but that didn't stop the crashes.
Here's what I've tried so far:
- reinstalled iTunes (tried both 8.1.1 and 8.2)
- deleted preferences
- rebuilt library
- repaired permissions
- used DiskWarrior to rebuild directory
- re-installed OS X (archive and install)
But it's still crashing after all of that. It doesn't crash when playing mp3 or AAC files from my iTunes library, but it's crashing almost half the time I try to play a CD.
Any ideas of what might be going wrong or what else I might try?
Looking in the console log, the crash generally seems to be either a segmentation fault or a bus error.
Here's what I think are the relevant portions of some of the iTuunes crash logs:

More crashes... One other time it crashes that I didn't mention above is when I insert an audio CD that I haven't played before. iTunes queries CDDB and then crashes pretty consistently. That and when a CD finishes playing are probably the most common, though it sometimes crashes in the middle of playing a CD (often when I've just done something else, such as editing information for some tracks in my library).
Not that anyone seems to be paying attention to this thread, but here's some more crash log excerpts. I'm noticing that most of my crashes are happening on thread 0 at 0x00003bd5 0x1000 + 11221, though there are a few on other threads (though thread 0 also seems to be at 0x00003bd5 0x1000 + 11221, even though it's not the thread that crashed)
The most common error I'm getting is a segmentation fault:

The Superdrive on my MacBook Pro ejects audio CDs just a few seconds after inserting them. This happens both with original audio CDs I have bought in music stores AND with audio CDs I have recorded myself, on the very same computer, via iTunes. The same does NOT happen with data CDs (e.g., stuff in mp3 format), which are read just fine. This behaviour started a couple of weeks ago, until then everything had worked just fine for years. I am running iTunes 11.1 under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Any idea?

  • ITunes 6.0.5 crashes with older CDs!

I am running a PowerBook G4 550mhz (yes an oldie but goodie) and i have discovered a new problem with my iTunes 6.0.5. when i insert an older CD (from maybe pre 1996?) and hit play or import, it crashes my iTunes. I have to do the whole Force Quit routine. With newer CDs (2005 CDs work), there is no problem. I'm not sure what the cut-off date is because I haven't done enough research but this is a strange thing.
Does anybody have any ideas? It is real annoying and I'm sitting on some old CDs that I would love to download. Is it my computer, the iTunes or something in between?

As a workaround, you could possibly rip the old CDs on another computer, burn them and use the new burn in your 550.

  • ITunes crashes with BlueTooth audio - JAMBOX

iTunes freezes and crashes with error code 13014 when trying to launch while a BlueTooth audio device is tuned on - in this case, a Jawbone JAMBOX.  It can pair successfully, but connection can be intermittant and often a reboot is needed for the connection to stabilize.  iTunes has worked okay when the Jambox is in MONO mode over BlueTooth, but when it is in STEREO mode, the Jambox crashes iTunes.
Anyone know anything about the JAMBOX used with iTunes, or more specifically, with a MBP early 2011 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and iTunes v10.4 ?
    Thanks

I have also had this problem with my MacBook Pro.  It's not all the time, but often with Jambox on, iTunes freezes.  Turn it off, and iTunes plays just fine.  Also get awful quality when trying to use Jambox with some feeds from Firefox.  From the comments of others, this seems to be an Apple problem rather than a Jambox problem.  Any thoughts?

  • Importing CD's into Itunes Crashes with EXC_BAD_ACCESS KERN_Invalid Address

Every time I try to import a CD into Itunes it crashes. It started with Itunes 10.2, I then downgraded to 10.0 and then to 9.2. The problem is the same. I have repaired the disk, repaired permissions several times and checked my memory. Nothing seems to work. I hope you can suggest a fix. Here is the crash log:

Since the 10.2 iTunes update I have been completely unable to import from CD's into iTunes. An error message appears.

  • ITunes crashed with backing up/need help restoring

In the middle of doing a first-time back-up, my iTunes crashed. When I restarted it, all my music was gone. (My library page is black.)
iTunes estimated I'd need 6 disks to back-up my library. I was on disk 4 when the problem occurred.
What should I do to restore my library? Will resoring with Disks 1-3 allow iTunes to recognize my iPod so that I can restore the music that would have been on disks 4-6?
    Thanks.

    1. Unless you've told iTunes not to copy music you've added to the iTunes library, backing this folder up will back up your entire iTunes library. If applicable, deauthorize the machine before restoring the computer.
    2. This will work with music purchased from the iTunes store, when the computer is authorized to play music purchased from the iTunes store account used to purchase that music. It will not work with music you've gotten from CDs or other sources.
    3. Yes.

  • Itunes crashes with no crash report and won't let me delete the app...

If noone can help me I may seriously lose it...
Mactel user with recent crash issues with itunes...crashes consistently about twenty to thirty seconds after opening and offers no crash report...downloaded appzapper and when I try to empty my trash bin I get the following message which I suspect may have something to do with the crashing:
The operation cannot be completed becasue the item "ituneshelper" is in use.
This was happening with 7.0 and now with 7.1...any ideas??

Look in /Library/Logs for a file named itunes.crash.log.
IF you see that file, email me a copy, and I'll take a look at it. Please also include a link to this Discussions thread.

  • Why does iTunes crash with 'iTunes has stopped working' on startup?

This only happens when the computer is connected to the internet. If I switch wi-fi off first, iTunes can start, and then I can switch it on again, and it works just fine. It is really annoying!  I have seen elsewhere that the 'iTunes has stopped working' message can be caused by outdated graphics card drivers. I have the latest version of both iTunes for Win 7, and the latest graphics drivers.
I have also tried 'repairing' iTunes, and deinstalling and reinstalling it.
The message 'accessing iTunes store' typically pops up just before iTunes crashes, about ten seconds after I click the iTunes icon to start it.
The error goes on to say 'A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.'
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!
    Jonathan

  • Finder/iTunes only recognize audio CDs at the second load

It's the first time I decided to backup my audio CDs and I'm having the same problem which was posted several months before as we can check at this topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10960592
That topic hasn't been answered yet and I would like to refresh this discussion because iTunes and OSX have had several updates since the topic's launch and looks like this issue still hasn't been fixed.
Is there any automator script or patch that assure the audio CD to load correctly at the first time?

I am having the exact same problem. I have seen *a lot* of posts about this topic and hope that apple resolves it soon.

  • ITunes crashes with windows 7

    Hi there
My iTunes crashes everytime on loading on my windows 7 PC. The problem event name is AppHangB1.
I have installed the most recent version of iTunes onto this PC. It is a new installation. I have tried to import an iTunes folder elsewhere on my network, and when I start the program I get the message that it is 'determining gapless playback' - it whizzes through some tracks and then crashes 100% of the time.
    Help!!
    Many thanks
    Andy

Try this one and see if it helps:
    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes, Sync and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Problem with audio CDs

My CD/DVD drive no longer plays audio CDs. It can play DVDs without any problems, but when I insert an audio CD it ejects the disc.
How can I figure out what the problem is?

Resetting the PRAM did not work for me. Last week, the optical drive was waiting a few seconds and then ejecting all media (CDs, DVDs, Installation disks...)
The guy at the local Apple store ran diagnostics and reset the DVD region. Although I have never had Mac OS ask what region I wanted to use, it is supposed to ask the first time you insert a DVD. If you switch regions (such inserting DVDs formatted for North America-1 and then Europe-2,) you will be asked for the Region each time you insert a different region. For once the region has been changed five times, it is locked in at the last region you selected and the user cannot change it again. There is some Pirateware that will allow you to change it but let the buyer beware.
At any rate, whatever the "Genius" did at the store made my optical drive accept anything but an audio CD.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • ITunes / Gracenote recognized audio cds on one computer but not another!

What tha....I was importing purchased retail cds (albeit old ones) on my iMac Intel OS 10.4.11 + iTunes 9.0.2.(25) and Gracenote recognized the artist, album cover & tracks no problem. Then I tried importing the same cds onto our MacBook (Intel) using SAME (seemingly) software: OS 10.4.11 + iTunes 9.0.2 (25) and I got the message, "This CD was not found in the CDDB database." If that is the case, what database was the iMac querrying? This has happened to 3 George Howard cds so far.
Anyone come across this problem? Any advice?

I have also had "recognition" problems with CDDB Gracenote.
The latest, incredibly, was a Sinatra CD entitled "Where are you?" - one of his classics, which I can clearly see on the Gracenote website Capitol CDP 7 91209 2.
I have sent feedback to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
and suggest others do the same - eventually the message gets through !

  • ITunes crashes with "iTunes has stopped working" message

After upgrading iTunes to the latest version, each time I launch it – it crashes.
I then removed the app, ran CCleaner and removed any trace of iTunes / Apple from the registry, downloaded a fresh copy from Apple’s site and re-installed it.
Now, from time to time, I manage to see the “Enter your Apple ID” window once iTunes launches, but then it crashes again.
I’m out of ideas how to solve this – any suggestions?
    I’m running Win7, 64bit, with iPhone 4/4S, iPad 2.
    Thanks,
    O.

Do you have the ACE Mega CoDecS pack installed? I saw that as the problem somewhere, and uninstalled it and that took care of the problem. I had just re-installed before having that problem and had every single codec installed rather than just installing a certain filter that I was needing and it was affecting Quicktime, which in turn was affecting iTunes.

  • ITunes crashing when burning CDs, CDs won't mount

Intermittently, but becoming more frequent, I have been having problems burning CDs.  I am burning my own recordings, so there is no copyright problem.  When I burn the CD in iTunes, everything seems to go OK at first.  Afterward, it mounts the disk image in iTunes and I try to play it.  This usually causes iTunes to go to the spinning beachball indefinitely.  I have to force quit iTunes to get it to stop.  When I relaunch iTunes, the disk does not appear in it.  Nor does it appear in Finder.  Disk utility can see it, but I can't do anything there besides eject it.  If I eject the disk and reinsert it, it still doesn't mount, although it will cause iTunes to launch.  I am wondering if this is a problem with iTunes or if it could be a sign that my optical drive is problematic.
I am using the setup below. iTunes is up-to-date.

    Hello Hoover411,
It sounds as though you are experiencing freezes with iTunes, and complications with your optical media. I have located an article that may help you with this situation. The article includes a number of troubleshooting steps for apps that freeze or quit:
OS X Yosemite: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly
There are several suggestions to try.
If the app is frozen, force quit the app. Click the app’s window, then choose Apple menu > Force Quit. You can also press Option-Command (⌘)-Esc, select the app, then click Force Quit.
When you force an app to quit, you may lose unsaved changes.
If the app quit, reopen it by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears.
Restart your Mac. For more information, see Restart your Mac.
Read the app’s documentation to check if it’s compatible with your version of OS X.
Open another file in the app. There may be a problem with the original file.
Check for updates to your software.
Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of OS X.
Uninstall any app plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers.
If you recently updated the app or OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you installed may no longer be compatible.
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These tools can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
Restart your Mac in safe mode. For more information, see Restart your Mac in safe mode.
