ITunes defaces Titles

The problem: I want tracks, all named in Windows in this way:
Deichkind - Arbeit nervt
import in a playlist of iTunes.
Say Artist dash Title and when available or necessary additions if they are entitled to a remix or example 2500 Tracks of my recorded manually record collection to a, b, c or which side ever (in albums)
Of course, ID-tags are present in most,'m just going to add to this what a real pain is at about 8000 tracks, where I go into more detail only in my record collection. But that in itself should not be the problem.
What does iTunes? It truncates the file name and in the "Name" list is just "Arbeit nervt". On some tracks it makes it sofort immediately, with some later if you click on it or they are played by chance. And some track names are simply mutilated, for whatever reason, then there is missing any additional information or otherwise. In Explorer, the name is retained.
Anyone have any idea how to disable that? Automatic file management from itunes is turned off.
I tried to this: Everything out delete (from iTunes), uninstall (completely, not just superficially) brings nothing.
Why I want to have that? Because not leave some tracks in Windows Explorer nothing in the properties-details write why I do not know, but at least the name of the file can be changed.
It should be mentioned: I distinguish two types of files: Primary, my record collection, because all is well. Details can easily edit, and iTunes in one or another form of sorting is often used.
Secondary: all others who are only there to listen and where the tags are not as important as enough for me to sort by name.
Why I do it all by hand?
1. because iTunes has failed in the automatic management under Windows,
2. I enjoy it and I am more with my music
3. and especially again want to deal with my record collection.
System: Windows 7 64bit, iTunes 11.3.1.2
And yes I think so after about a replacement, but the bears again the disadvantage I find a program must on my PC and run at least on board with which I can remotely control playback on the PC.
A solution is preferred for iTunes ... or at least approaches it. I'm not giving up the fast in case of problems or not for the whys interested.
Translated by Google, ... sorry folks!

Your problem is the assumption that iTunes will manage music based on file names - essentially, it does not do this.  Instead, iTunes uses metadata ("tags") embedded within the media files, together with metadata stored in the iTunes database (iTunes Library.itl) to determine how your library content is presented, sorted, etc.  The inherent iTunes data model treats track name, artist, album name, etc. as separate metadata elements.  You can always use playlists (especially smart playlists) to create tailored views within your library - for example, to show all tracks by a specific artist independent of album.
To use iTunes effectively (as with any software) its much better to learn how it works and apply that to your needs, rather than fight against it while trying to impose a way of working that you like but is alien to the way that iTunes works.  There are ways to populate iTunes' metadata in "non-conventional" ways (some of these rely on external scripts and may be difficult to apply and maintain consistently) but I suspect that for the vast majority of people this would be a more onerous and time-consuming task than using iTunes as intended.  FWIW, my iTunes library is organized exactly the same way that I manage physical CDs - its really not difficult to do.  If you can post some specific examples of what you want to do and why you don't see the expected results in iTunes I may be able to offer suggestions.

  • Bug in iTunes numeric title sort.

The Bug in the sort-function of the iPod results in mixed up track list.
An album with more then 9 tracks will be sorted in the wrong way, when only title or filename or the album field is just to give a track a number. The play order is 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 2, 3 , 4 , 5, 6.... instead of the correct order 1,2,3,4,5,6...10,11, 12...
    (Same issue with album numbers in Compliations. CD1, CD10, CD11, CD12, CD2, CD3....)
For example: After playing the track named "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 1 - Yellow Submarine" the ipod/iTunes will play "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 10 - Baby, You´re A Rich Man" instead of "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 2 - Hey Bulldog."
The programmer have to search the string for numbers and join all numeric values to a single number.
Example: Sample data :abc123. is "a" a number? no. is "b" a number no. is "c" a number no. is "1" a number? yes. store. is "2" a number? yes. join to "1". (now we have "12"). is "3" a number? yes. join to "12". (Now we have "123") -> EOL
Is "123" larger than "99"? yes! is "123" larger than 124. no!
Thats it. In perl you need 1 line of sourcecode, in c and c++ this can be done in 10 lines. In java there a objects for this type of work.
And every user will be happy and nobody has to do the 01, 02, 03 workaround or reimport their audiobooks.
(I guess its easy and dn´t need much more performance... iTunes uses enough ram to extra cache this operation.)
Alternativly Apple should thing about storing the original filename in the ID3 tag or itunes database. This would make sorting the files without id3 tags (believe me or not, there are many people using mp3 for 10 years and have no id3 tags in there mp3-library) in itunes possible. (there is a god free tagger for mac os but no for windows.)
A company like Apple should have the ability to correct the error / bug in the iPod-firmware (have the same issue in classic and iphone) or itunes-softwar.
This is a wellknown and very common error done by newbie programmers or people who have not read the documentation of the software-libraries.

Whether you like the idea or not, the appropriate place to to incorporate information about the contents of media files is inside the tag, not the filename. Modern media software is generally designed to extract and use this information. As you have indicated users are free to choose their own filename conventions which often cannot be correctly interpreted by software. iTunes & iPod can provide you with many more ways to organise & select your music with the correct information than will be the case if, as you seem to imply, the only field present is the Name which iTunes will take from the filename if it can't find a tag.
Assuming you've been consistent with your naming scheme a small investment of time with a tagging program could populate the ID3 tags by parsing the different sections of the name into the appropriate fields. Magic File Renamer, The Rename and similar programs can even be used just to add the leading zeros to the track number section of the filenames if you really want to hold out against adding tags. If you use a 3rd party tagger you need to force iTunes to rescan the information thus: CTRL-A (select all), CTRL-I (get info.), click OK (read the tag & update with any changes - you didn't make any before you clicked OK did you? - and update the iTunes database with the current info.) If you move or rename files outside of iTunes you can either manually remove & reimport files or use one of the tools I suggest below.
A year ago I spent some time preparing a list of over 50 ideas for improving iTunes & iPod all of which I consider would be easy to program and would make the products nicer to use. The reality is that Apple is a large and mostly deaf corporation. I've sent my ideas to iTunes Feedback & iPod Feedback but who knows if anyone who could influnce future development ever got to see them. What is clear is that new features are generally only introduced on new models. Rather than railing that it could be better (granted) it is much more productive to gain an understanding of the way that the software works and try to accomodate for it. See, for example, my postings on Grouping tracks into albums or Find tracks without artwork where I've shared my experience on how to get all my albums organised neatly & consistently. As I mentioned elsewhere I have an iRiver and while trawling a folder structure to locate music works I'm much happier with my instant-on, fully organised & artworked iPod where I can see artwork as I'm selecting music, play videos & games and store so much more.

    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.

  • The play option is not available on some iTunes extra titles on Apple TV

With the latest update iTunes extra has been added to Apple TV, which is pretty cool.  BUT some titles do not have the "play" option once you are in the iTunes extra menu.  All the features are there, but the play option is not.  This is particularly happening with the movie Planes.  Other Disney titles, and non-disney titles, seem to irk fine.  It works from my MacBook Pro.  I have logged out and back into iTunes on my ATV with no change.  Any ideas?

It sounds like lack of testing with these titles in all honesty.
I guess you could also alert itunes Store support to this.  Hoepfully it's just the odd title here and there, and something that can be quickly fixed, but kids won't understand that!
I'm dissapointed that the old Extras I have downloaded in iTunes won't work as they would with AppleTV 1 when streamed from iTunes.
Uncertain if you can download Extras to iTunes anymore either if they are cloud dependent and in some new format perhaps.  Yet to try but I don't think they'd work via Home Sharing.

  • Import files into iTunes song title is truncated

When importing files using the "File - Add File To Library" function for songs with very long title names, the song title is being truncated at about 35 characters upon import into Itunes. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

iTunes supports a maximum of 40 characters for file and folder names, inclusive of file extension for the files that it manages.
Tag properties such as Artist, Album, and Name are typically limited to 256 characters. Files in .wav format don't have a tag so it is usually these that cause difficulties when reimported to iTunes. The filename including any leading track number is used as the name of the imported track and all other fields are left blank. If iTunes was managing the track names in a previous library then the 40 character limits will apply reducing what can be read from the path and on reimport iTunes will typically move the files from their original location into the Unknown Artist\Unknown Album folder discarding more potentially useful information. If this is the issue, but you have the files somewhere in sensible artist and album folder with longer filenames, then turn off the options for Keep... and Copy... before adding to the library and use my script TagFromFilename to reconstruct missing information from the file path.
If the issue is simply how iTunes names the imported track when viewed in Windows Explorer, and it has the complete information in the iTunes interface, then you can use my script ConsolidateByMovingLong.

  • "Previous iTunes Library" title. How do I remove this?

I upgraded to iTunes 10 and when I decided to open iTunes it told me to choose a library. I chose the most recent one but noticed that some songs were missing.
Right now I have organized all of my music under the iTunes folder and deleted all the other old libraries.
I've opened iTunes once again, but "previous iTunes library" keeps appearing as the title.
I tried to figure it out on my own by reading discussions here but I keep seeing something about .itl (if im correct, dont remember). but I don't see anything like that in my folders.
    Please help?!

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
The usual reason for getting in this position is that your original library was corrupt in some fashion and on start-up iTunes prompted you to find another one. Ideally you would restore your most recent backup of your library but I'm guessing you don't have one of those.
The next best thing is the most recent file in the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder. These are often created automatically when iTunes is updated. Although it will usually work from there as you have found iTunes picks up the window title from the folder which is why your iTunes is now called *Previous iTunes Libraries*. Close iTunes and copy the file with the most recent date into the main iTunes folder. Rename any existing *iTunes Library.itl* file as *iTunes Library (BROKEN).itl* because it almost certainly is, then rename the file you've just copied as *iTunes Library.itl*. Now use the SHIFT-start iTunes method (press and hold down shift immediately on clicking the icon to start iTunes and continue to hold until a dialog box appears) to open the library file in the main iTunes folder.
Now that you've repaired the library you need a tool such as iTunes Folder Watch to detect any changes in your library since the backup file was created. Enable the option to check for dead tracks on startup so that it will find any files deleted since your last update.
    For future reference...
*Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows Only)*
Grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes.

  • ITunes podcast title vs. Feedburner feed name vs. Wordpress Category

    Hello all,
I just had my podcast approved and listed on iTunes, yay!
Now, my problem is as follows:
I have a specific category on my Wordpress site which generates a feed that is then "burned" by Feedburner.  iTunes then links to my Feedburner feed.  So far so good.
The problem is that instead of picking up the feed name that I set up on Feedburner, iTunes is picking up my Wordpress category name.  When opening the Feedburner feed, the feed page also shows the category name instead of the name I set up when signing up for the Feedburner account.
This is probably more of a Feedburner question rather than an iTunes question (now that I wrote it all down!)
Any insights?  (I've already done the "SmartCast" setting-up on Feedburner)
    Thanks!

    GORS,
Wow, I guess I should have posted it then.  Now I'm not 100% sure I remember what I did.
On Feedburner, you can click on "Optimize" then, right under your feed title at the top of the page, click on "edit feed settings."  You can edit the name of the feed there.
And don't forget to re-sync the feed after the changes.  Also, remember that iTunes will not pick up the changes right away.
Let me know if this works for you.

  • Itunes truncates titles of audiobook tracks

I am importing audio books into iTunes and converting them from music to audio books. When I select my tracks and select Get Info->Options->Media Kind to change it from music to audio books it truncates or alters all the titles of my tracks. Even just selecting the track name will truncate it...any suggestions?

What are you using to rip the audiobooks. Most text fields in ID3V2.x are limited to 255 characters, but in iD3V1 this is just 30. If the tracks have both ID3V1 & V2 tags iTunes may read the truncated values from the V1 tag. Use ID3V2.3 for best results. Note also that iTunes limits file and folder names to 40 characters when it is in charge of organizing the files, but this in itself shouldn't affect the values stored in the tags.

  • Itunes & song titles/artists

When I try to download new purchased music, itunes won't recognize the artist or song titles?
    Is it just a setting?

Are you just getting Track 01, Track 02 etc. is your internet connection open when you are importing? For commercial CDs, you have to connect to the internet as iTunes picks up the track information from an online database. It will do this automatically if you are connected while you are importing or you can do it afterwards by connecting to the internet, highlighting the tracks and going to Advanced>Get CD Track names. See if this helps explain things a bit better than I have: How iTunes remembers Audio CDs

  • ITunes Song Titles in Slideshow

I have iPhoto 5 and the most recent iTunes. When I create add music to a slideshow, I cannot see the individual songs, just the top level places like playlists. The workaround is to put the song in the playlist, but I should be able to see the songs, right?
There is a support article which says to "have iTunes running", but I tried that and it did not work.
Is this an incompatibility with my relatively old iPhoto and my newer iTunes?

    Keith,
There should be a drop-down menu in the window where you can toggle from "iTunes Playlists" to "iTunes Library." See the screenshots that lori refers to in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3836266&#3836266

  • Title in iTunes program not == iTunes

My Library is located in C:\itunes\ and my database file is inside C:\itunes\!library_info\
This makes my iTunes library title "!library_info" which is very annoying. Before version 9 my iTunes just had the title "iTunes". Now it doesn't, which is annoying. What can we do to fix this Apple? I took a peak inside the Library Database file with Textpad, and I could not find anything that defines the library title in iTunes.
This is very annoying, and needs a fix or workaround ASAP

As Katrina says, iTunes 9 gives the title of the iTunes Window the name of the folder in which the iTunes library resides. If you want to change the window title then you will need to rename the folder.
Moving/renaming bits of your iTunes libray via Windows Explorer or Finder can easily lead to broken links & confusion, but there are a few things which generally work.
With everything in the "normal" layout, as shown in the image posted earlier, it is usually possible to move the enclosing iTunes folder as a complete unit. This is ideal for moving your library to a bigger drive with more free space and keeping everything together means it's easy to do againn the next time. This method also preserves the existing file & folder names within the iTunes Media folder for those like me who prefer to keep control over such things. The "official" Apple way is to let iTunes copy the contents of the media folder which, while it can work, means letting iTunes take control of all your files & folders and makes it more likely that the library will break if, for example, drive letters change unexpectedly.
If the media folder (outlined in red) stays in the same place it is usually possible to move the library files & artwork folder someplace else and, using the SHIFT-start iTunes method, open the library and find all the media still connected.
With this last in mind you could rename your !library_info folder as iTunes, then hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes, navigate to C:\iTunes\iTunes and open the library. If anything fails to work, just undo the rename & revert back. A more common scenario, often caused by people using the recommended relocation method, is to have the iTunes folder located in the user's Music folder.

  • HELP? Itunes won't import songs without official titles!?!

This is so strange, but hopefully someone out there will have a suggestion. It makes absolutely no sense to me.
I have a pc that I recently uploaded a lot of music to from two different ipods (using ephpod). All of the songs are 'there', i.e. they are present in the same folder as the one itunes is already using to import from, but after spending hours examining the problem, it seems to be differentially only importing songs that have full information associated with them. I.e. both the songs that it is importing and not-importing are both Mpeg layer 3 audio files (mp3), they are also both full quality files (i.e. they are not links of 2kb, but 3 mb or so), the only difference is that the ones it IS actually importing have 'full details' listed below them (i.e. artist and album title in grey below the song title) all of the other songs merely have the track number (i.e. 01, 02, etc). THe problem is not that it is songs uploaded from two different ipods, as none of the songs from one of the ipods and 3/4 of those from the other won't play (also they won't play in windows media player or even open in the finder...?)
I'm pretty sure this is the problem, as after going through the tons of artists different folders the only ones it will import are those with the previously mentioned 'full data' and not those that just have the track numbers- so maybe the question is whether there is a way to disarm itunes 'song title' discriminatory policy, or perhaps a program that will enable me to add artist info to the songs, or .......a better suggestion?

Hey I got it working. Here's what I did that finally worked.
    1. Set Mp3tag v2.46a to remove all tags when pressing the "remove tag" button.
    2. Loaded all MP3's in Mp3tag. (they all had various fields filled and ID3 versions).
    3. Pressed "Remove tags" button. This cleared all tags.
    4. Pressed the Undo button. This replaced all tags.
After doing this, all the MP3's loaded into iTunes.
And I got to keep my meticulous tags.
So I guess whatever bug in the ID3 tags was cleared out when Mp3tag cleared/uncleared the tags.
I wish we could figure out exactly what the problem is though.
I spent a few hours cleared certain fields, checking ID3 version numbers against each other, etc. and I still don't know what iTunes is having problem with.
    Thanks for the tip, ed!

  • Named voice memos on iphone changing names when imported to mac through iTunes.

I have a lot of memos that have all been named on my iPhone. Now I'm trying to import the voice memos, but I can't seem to make the voice memos keep their original titles. When viewed through iTunes the titles are correct, but when I try and drag the files to a folder the titles are renamed to a generic date and time format. These "wrong" titles are also present when manouvering to the iTunes media folder containing the voice memos.
Is it really true that you can't make iTunes preserve the original titles?

alright, i have read all the articles and all the solution given. it still doesnt work. i'm not sure why all my friends got his song nicely in chinese(the same file), whereas mine is in unreadable letters. I downloaded ConvertZ, and used it. the first one it says unable to convert and then the second time i manage to get it convert, however it convert to the same file as before and it still have the same problem. i think the problem for me in convertZ is that COnvertZ only convert the title, but not the composition in it. is there still any advise on how to get it fix?
    here are my problem:
-the name of the file is 相逢(2chinese character).
-when i right click on the file and on summary page it shows that title is "Ïà·ê" and comment is "Mobile Suit GUNDAM¾ç³¡°æ ¢ó~".
-when i convert the file using convertZ it just changes the file name insteed of title. (itunes takes title instead of file name)
-i have enable the chinese language on my pc.
-but some chinese song on itune does appear.
thank you for all the help before. i dont think its anything to do with myipod or itune. it more like windows problem. but is there any help that i can reach to? thank you very much. more advise will be appreciated.
